Answer to:
What will eventually replace religion?
I like to look at it as Joseph Campbell did. Religions may play a social and psychological function, but when we interpret them as historical facts, they don't work properly. It is my hope that by utilizing the scientific method we will eventually be able to move past this mistake and religion will be relegated to a position where it belongs; to be discussed, and interpreted, retold and...

How exactly does one "convert" to atheism? There is no belief system, dogma, or practices to learn and/or accept. A person can, hypothetically, not change at all, except they drop a single belief.

There is no such thing as an "Atheist non-belief system," or any sort of atheistic system for that matter. The writers of textbooks don't claim to be omnipotent, therefore they needn't be rejected for an error. No, it is not correct. Secular means a thing is not religious in nature, such as a shopping mall(secular) vs. a temple(religious). In contrast, an atheist is a person that does not believe in gods. While the two may often come up in the same conversations, they are not synonymous.
Also, Buddhists can be both atheistic and religious, depending on how we are defining words.

While I try to avoid making categorical statements, I think this is too young; for both of them. Neither of them is likely mature enough for marriage. If you have ever left a religion and no longer consider yourself part of that religion, do you ever feel insecure without it? See below.
I don't think you need to invoke a God to explain your father's "luck." First of all, look at all the people that don't have jobs. I'll bet a fair percentage of them are Christian. Secondly, if your father didn't find a job, or lost his new job, I'll bet he would still believe that God will provide, even if that provision is unemployment and/or food stamps.
His belief might give him peace, but...

I don't agree that parents create the kids they want. I would say that they shape their kids to be what they (the parents) truly are. This depends entirely on how they were breaking in and who else was home. If my wife and children were home, I would be first concerned for their safety. If a presidential candidate promised to bring All US military home to defend and protect 'our own soil only', would you vote for them?
Not necessarily, but I think it is a step in the right direction. We should not "protect 'our soil only;'" we have allies and we owe them our support. However, I do not think we need standing armies in other countries. We also do not need the ridiculous military budget we currently have. Finally, this is but one of many issues I would use to form my opinion of a candidate.

Assuming the police and military are still armed, or at least able to be armed while on duty, there would be little change overall. The police would benefit by there being far fewer armed criminals on the streets and society would benefit generally by there being fewer violent crimes.

No, it does not take faith to believe in evolution. First off, evolution happens. This is a fact; it has been observed. This does not take faith.

What the evidence points to is less complex life leading to more complex life. Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. Why ignore this now?
I think those that "do for [their] country" are really doing for themselves indirectly. Perhaps they feed their pride, or see that a stronger country is good for them too. In that scenario, when you see no good coming back to you, it might be considered foolish to keep paying forward, at least when your own bills are going unpaid.

If you won the lottery ( MILLIONS )...Would you still keep your job and work?
Yes, I would. Lets assume best case scenario: I get a million after taxes; a million in my pocket. I would pay off all my debts, make some upgrades to my home and THEN look into opening my own business. Until that point, I would continue to work; bringing in income and keeping bridges up. That way, if something unexpected happened, there would still be the old life to fall back onto.

THE new atheists envision a world with no religion—no suicide bombers, no religious wars, and no televangelists fleecing their flocks. Does that vision appeal to you?
Yes, I do think that would lead to a better world. Don't get me wrong, there would still be a-holes, but we would have one less reason to kill each other.

I assume you are speaking of the "defamation of religions" movement by the United Nations, which is already mirrored in many Islamic countries. I suggest this is the case because many people rate their religious faith above their rational thought.

At what point do you think life begins? Conception? 5 months pregnant? I believe that life begins at birth, before you are born, you are on the same level as a tape worm: just a parasite.
I believe life begins at conception, but that life is no different from plants and animals that we kill all the time. When we are discussing abortion, what I feel is important is the thing that makes humans different from (most) other animals: self-awareness. There is no definite time that a human becomes self-aware, but it is almost certainly after birth. Therefore, I consider birth to be a...

Should people not be allowed to have children if they are not morally, maturely, or responsibly fit? Why or why not? Explain.
I personally would like to see a license required before one has children. One should have to take parenting classes before the life of an infant be placed in their hands. I know this is impossible to implement and enforce, but I think parenting is such an important job, and it seems that few take it seriously.

That's not a question, that's a statement, and I suppose it is a statement that reflects relatively few people. Yesterday I heard of a study which concluded that, based on the mother's stress level while pregnant, the baby's brain will develop differently. In contrast, low stress = low cortisol, which causes less development of this part of the...

Was god invented to intimidate and keep people in religions or were religions created because people were already scared and superstitious?
I really don't think either, but closer to the latter. I think gods and religions grew up organically out of our ignorance and natural curiosity. Just as a child stumbles through life, early humanity had to make a lot of mistakes and utilize a lot of "training wheel beliefs" in order to get through. The problems come along when we grow up and refuse to take off the training wheels.

Or, perhaps you both need time alone, or time to grow, time apart to be yourselves before you are ready to be together. Either way, I think you should call it quits.

I'm not 100% happy with this answer, but it was the closest. In my opinion, doubt is the only rational choice, and therefore, we should all be agnostic. Neither, or maybe both. The term pagan (in Latin, paganus) was first used by early Christians to refer to anyone not Christian or Jewish. If that were to happen, it wouldn't be God. God is a human construct, or, more correctly, there are many different human constructs with the label "God." The concept "God" is a lot like the concept "love" or "evil." It only makes sense when there is a human mind to decode the concept.

Answer to:
I called my grandma a bitch. My dad later spanked me. I am 14/female. Would you have handled it differently if you were my dad? How so?
I can't imagine using corporeal punishment on my children, ESPECIALLY if they were 14. In my opinion, using violence as a punishment (especially at your age)is more often than not counterproductive.
Furthermore, don't call your grandma names. Even if its true.
Answer to:
What do you wish parents would tell their children more often?
I don't want you to take my word for it, go out and look at the world. Then, decide for yourself.
Answer to:
Why do some parents complain about whats on T.V and that their kids are watching it in the middle of the night?
There is a simple fix to this problem. Get rid of the TV. When we moved recently, we found that our cable company didn't service our new home, and none of the companies that do service our new area had plans that fit our needs. As a result, we don't have any TV. We still keep them around to watch movies from time to time, but no TV. I don't miss it a bit.

Why is it when you talk about life being on other planets, everyone always uses humans as a reference to disprove it?
I'm not sure what you are getting at. How could humans be used to disprove the possibility of extraterrestrial life?
Of course it goes without saying that if there were life elsewhere it would be different from humans. Life that evolved in a different environment would certainly look different. However, this is assuming you are talking to life on the intellectual level as humans, since there...

Can we all agree and say we don't know if there is or isn't a god? Why or why not?
I'll go for that. I consider myself to be an agnostic atheist. I don't believe there are gods, but I recognize that I don't have all the information.
Plus, before we can even begin to deal with that discussion, we need to decide what kind of "god" we are talking about. Are we talking about YHWH, Zeus, Krishna, Jesus, Gautama, the FSM or something more vague like a pantheistic or panantheistic...

Which option best describes the bible?
I could have voted for 4 out of those five, but I think this answer filled it out best. The bible has bits of accuracy (ie, there is a place called Egypt), but all the parts that are important seem to be fiction (ie, there is no evidence that the Jews were ever held as slaves in Egypt).

Do you think that using religion as an excuse to justify sexism is the same thing as calling God a pig?
I'm not sure about the way you worded that. Using religion to justify sexism is not calling God a pig, however, claiming that people use religion to justify sexism might be calling God a pig. I, however, do not think God is a pig, because you have to exist before you can be swine. I think humans are often pigs.
Answer to:

Answer to:
Any idea why some preachers use "Thee/Thou/Thy" in their sermons/prayers; when that is not the way Jesus and God would have spoken?
It creates a feeling of "otherness," making listeners feel like they are part of something special. It may also give their words more authority since many people are used to hearing that type of speech from the bible. Listeners may mistake the preacher's words for those they themselves believe to be of divine origin.

Do you like a lot of pomp/pizazz/jazz fancydancy ceremony or is simplicity your cuppa tea? Always been like that or did you change?
I prefer low key, intimate events. I have always been this way. I similarly dislike most holidays because such a big deal is made of them. If Christmas was simply a day off work to spend with family, I would be all about it. Instead, its two months of retail chaos, followed by weeks of cleanup. Why? For what?

Do you ever stand up while you are eating your breakfast, lunch, or dinner? If you do, why?
I do. I think its a result of working retail for most of my life. To prepare, eat and cleanup a full meal in 15 minutes takes a bit of skill. I have to really think and prepare for a "proper" sit-down meal. I will often make a sandwich at the counter and eat it right there while I pace and/or do other work/projects in between bites.

Why is atheism on the increase ?
It is a natural consequence of modern religion. Religions make sense until they are taken literally, and modern religions all demand to be taken literally. As a result, religions in general have lost two of their functions. They no longer speak to the human psyche (since they now demand to be understood as historical facts) and they no longer explain the universe since they are being disproven...

I don't see how this is possible. Perhaps you can study their beliefs and honestly convert, or begin practicing their religion while keeping your beliefs private, but I don't think you can choose to change your beliefs.
If it were possible, I would say it should not be done. If your s/o can't accept you the way you are, they don't deserve you.

It is wrong to breed or domesticate animals against their will as pets. Agree or disagree and exlpain your answer thoroughly.
I disagree. Animals have lived a symbiotic relationship with humans for so long, many would not make it in the wild. I recall reading a book some years back that discussed what would happen if humans disappeared. According to the author, most cats would be OK, but most dogs would die in a few weeks. They have lost the ability to live wild. Also, have you ever had a pet? The affection is often...

Abortion is wrong and those who commit abortion commit murder and should serve serious jailtime. Agree or disagree and exlain why.
I disagree. An abortion is not murder. First off, murder is a legal term. If you kill in the name of your country while you wear its uniform, you are not a murderer (according to YOUR country). Murder only refers to the illegal killing of humans.
Leading into my second point, you are not a murderer if you kill a cow or a pig. Why not, because we have not defined murder as such. But why have we...

You can't win a war against terror. Its as silly as a war on drugs or a war on poverty. Its like mowing down a weed and doing nothing about the roots. All you've done is change the look; its still there. If we don't go after the CAUSES of terrorism, drugs, poverty, etc, we will never make real change. Endless war is not an option.

I would say that generally they don't. In my experience, those who are excellent, often think they are just part of the crowd. Perhaps toward the front, but not standing out. In contrast, those who stick out for "unsavory reasons" think they stick out for other reasons, closer to those who do so for excellence.

Answer to:
Are you for or against the death penalty?
I am against the death penalty for a couple reasons. First off, it is vengeance. I feel that we as a society need to move beyond "an eye for an eye." It is a barbaric remnant from a previous age. Secondly, supporters of capital punishment always point out that is prevents recidivism, while this is true, so does life in...

As many have mentioned, it can be either. However, since most (if not all) of the good religion can do can be found in other, non-religious, areas, one must wonder why we put up with the bad at all. I oppose the death penalty in nearly all cases. I think we need to move past our immature need for vengeance. "An eye for an eye" is a barbaric policy and it shows of a primitive culture. Its not a matter of giving people a second chance; I agree that some people are beyond redemption, but I disagree with using the power of the state to end lives.

Belief itself is not necessarily good or bad, but how that belief manifests itself in the real world could be either. Honey doesn't really go bad. However, if there is anything added to the honey you have to worry about the shelf life of the additive and you also have to worry about the container. If it is in a plastic container, it may leech chemicals into the honey.

In life, have you reached a place where the drama no longer effects you?
I have found that the more you try to distance yourself from drama, it will seek you out. I think people instinctively know when someone is stable, then they seek that stability by dumping their drama on you. The only way to not be affected is by dropping all empathy, which is far more damaging than any drama.

IF my boss asks me to stay late right before the end of my shift and I say i cannot stay can he force me to stay after a 6 hr shift in PA?
I'm pretty sure PA is an "at will" state, which means that your employer can fire you whenever they want, for whatever reason they want. Unless you are in a union, have some contract that specifically discusses your situation, or the firing was done in a discriminatory fashion, I don't think you have a case.

What exactly is a soul ? When I love is that my soul loving ? When I'm sad is my soul sad? Is my personality indicative of my soul ?
This is an often debated question. I think a soul is a person's psyche. It is the synergy that happens in the relatively large frontal cortices of humans. It is NOT the physical body, but it cannot exist apart from the body.
A soul is the same thing as a spirit. When people are doing spiritual exercises, they are working their psyches, their unconscious minds, that which most of us do not...

Not terribly strange when you consider the vast quantity of empty space between us and our nearest neighbor. For those so strongly opposed to Christianity please let me know why.
Historically, myths were not believed as historical fact. Stories were changed to suit the situation and the audience. Other stores have similar codes to mean that the district manager or some other VIP is on their way. If the girl is less than 13, it is always statutory rape. If she is 13-16 and the other person is 4 or more years older it is statutory rape. However, if she is 16 and the other party is 18, it should be legal, at least according to my reading of Pa. Cons. Stat. § 3121
Answer to:
Is this double standard law unfair? (see description)
I'll bet churches were just not thought of when the statute was drafted. i would file a complaint every Sunday and urge like minded friends to do the same. You might even write a letter or two to the church just to cover your bases. I know the cards are stacked against you, but it can't hurt to get the ball rolling.

Strictly speaking, it isn't anyone's responsibility to create jobs. Job creation is a byproduct of an increase in demand. However, the argument can be made that in the US, the government is charged with the task of creating jobs. It falls under to "promote the general welfare," and possibly, insuring "domestic tranquility."

No, I am against capital punishment. It is a silly, barbaric practice showing how we humans have not yet moved past our need for revenge.
Answer to:
If capital punishment became unconstitutional in the United States, do you think more people would commit capital offenses?
No, there would not be any connected increase in any type of crime. Capital punishment does not act as a deterrent. According to deterrence theory, for a punishment to deter, it must be swift, severe and certain. While the death penalty is severe, it is neither swift, nor certain.

Women are, men are not. From the perspective of passing on genes (which is nature), it is in the best interest of a woman, who has a finite number of eggs, to find a man who will help her provide for a family. In contrast, from the same perspective, it is in the best interest of a man, who has a near infinite number of sperm, to find as many sexual partners as possible.

That depends on how it is used. If someone uses the pop bottle I designed to hold soda as a pestle, no big whoop. It is serving their need, and not harming anyone else. In contrast, if another uses it as a club, harming others, I will be very angry.

Were the Bible writers witnesses to the life of Christ?
No. Obviously the writers of the OT didn't know Jesus, but neither did the writers of the NT. Even the "Gospels," the only records of the life of Jesus, weren't written until the end of the first century. Jesus was long dead by then. Paul, who wrote much of the NT, was allegedly alive at the time, but never met Jesus.

Do you think Christianity is centered around Jesus’ death on the cross with a "hope" of sin removal?
No, I think Christianity is centered around the devil. It is he that misleads the first humans, causing the fall and necessitating the salvation. Without the devil, we would still be living in Eden and there would have been no need for Christ.

At this point it could mean anything. She might want to hang out, but she really has to check her work schedule, or maybe she is planning on using work as an excuse not to hang out with you. Her tone of voice and body language would tell you more than her words at this point.

You should not take any chances and tell your principal. Perhaps he/she has some advice. Also, you school and/or district no doubt has a policy for this and might have some procedures. I would make sure you don't have any time alone with the girl. Given a little time, she may just move on.

People are taught of God's existence from childhood over the ages; why do so few have the guts to demand verification that God exists?
This is one of, if not the, biggest disconnects in modern society. We demand that our shampoo be systematically tested not to hurt our eyes, but we accept our teacher's claim that his or her particular idea of God exists. The best most can ever hope to do is switch to another teacher who has a slightly different idea of God. Relatively few challenge the basic assumption.

Jesus never returns to earth.. Proof that he never existed?
Not exactly, it depends on the particular Jesus we are talking about. Just like Robin Hood and King Arthur, the biblical character of Jesus is likely based on a real person. I he fails to return as it is said he prophesied, it doesn't mean that he never existed, but that he isn't God, a god, the son of God (or a god) or that he never said he would.

Which "gospel" or "gospels", if any, do you think should be preached to the world? Why?
No gospel should ever be taught. While often referring to several books of the Christian New Testament, the word "gospel" is often defined as something that is "absolutely true," or some similar definition. This is dangerous. EVERYTHING should be open to new information.

The problem is that for many, they claim that they DO know for sure. What's worse, they try to force their beliefs on others via proselytization and legislation. Therefore, the discussion is important. Even if no one changes their mind, at least we are thinking about it. It has entered into the public consciousness and not taken for granted.
