Both rugby league and rugby union are tough games and I have been told that the reason we in the UK dont wear shoulder pads because they do more harm to the shoulders than good.I have played rugby myself as a prop forward and there was alwalys plenty of shoulder contact during play.So I would say there's more chance of getting hurt playing rugby than American Football.
