I understand very well. My father died when I was very young. When I reached the age he died at it really messed with my head. It is probably a normal protective response that causes us to avoid situations where people have previously died. That kind of behavior is evolutionarily adaptive as it tends to keep animals alive.

Possibly. Somehow the tip and ring wires are shorted together, that is how the telco knows your phone is off hook. If your answering machine is having issues it could be the cause as could any other device that is connected to your phone lines. The way to be sure is to disconnects everything from the lines and dial the number. If it is still busy there is a problem before it get to the outlet.
