Ok, first up a dv6000us isn't a DVD drive - its the make/model of the HP notebook you have, which is quite different to the make/model of the dvd/cd drive that is in that computer. You'll need that to make sure you actually have what you think you have :) Next you don't mention which OS you have...

Probably the best OS for someone starting out would be Linux as you can get everything for free. You get the OS for free, you can a whole bunch of libraries for free, you get all your development tools for free - its brilliant! And, if you decide programming isn't for you... you haven't wasted...

Partition your drive. Use one partition for Windows stuff and one for Mac stuff. Unlike the Mac, Microsoft Windows can't handle different filesystems very well.
