Debian ping time response is lower than Windows ping time response?
While the Microsoft TCP/IP stack was just pulled from BSD quite some time ago, they have heavily modified it since then. The TCP/IP stack in Linux is also a BSD derivative, but different modifications have been made.
One thing to notice is that if you do a ping from the very limited "command prompt" in Windows, then it won't even give you any decimal places. The ping command in Debian linux...

i think my computer was hacked
Its reasonably unlikely that you've been hacked. Hacking is usually done on something higher profile than an individual's computer. Good hacking is very difficult to detect - you won't notice it. If you are noticing it, then its more likely something such as a typical Microsoft Windows malware infection.

In windows, are there any pros and/or cons to installing 3rd party programs on a separate hardrive?
The biggest pro would be performance. There are so many options - for example you could have your operating system and page file on one drive (a 7,200 rpm SATA) and your programs on another, faster drive (such as an SSD). You could also go with RAID, or have various drives depending on function (a large, slow one for data archives, etc).

Get a browser (such as Firefox) and integrate it with something that can run Adobe Flash and you'll be able to play quite a few browser-based games. Some older games, such as those from pre-2002, may also be able to run, given the correct software.

If you still get disconnects, then you probably have a faulty piece of hardware such as the NIC. If not, then its related to software installed on that system.

I've saved up 400 dollars to buy a new laptop, so what kind should I buy?
I take it that is Australian or Canadian dollars, so roughly speaking - not very much. So, you'll need to ask yourself what you want your laptop for? As you're going for an extremely low-end laptop, then you can pick one thing out of the following:
* Battery life
* Screen size
* Weight
* Processor power
* Graphics power
* New
And then generally speaking you'll sacrifice the rest.

that I needed 'audio hardware.'
Yes, you do. And not only do you need audio hardware (a soundcard or chip as well as speakers of headphones) you'll need audio software too. Chances are if you have headphones then you'll have them plugged into something. If you have a lovely lime-green jack, then that will be the audio hardware you need. Next up you'll need to determine why your programs can't use it - and that will most...

How come Mac doesn't get a virus?
While it is possible for any computer operating system to get a virus, in the real world today only the Microsoft Windows operating system is plagued with them. There is no one, single reason why Mac OS (or other operating systems such as Linux, Solaris, OpenBSD, etc) barely sees one report a year when Windows gets thousands of new infections. A lot of it comes down to the security model used...

This phenomenon is known as "radio frequency breakthrough interference". It occurs because the speaker leads are acting as an antenna and picking up the radio wave, converting it to an electrical signal.

Microsoft Windows is very prone to virus infections, spyware, trojans and adware and as such you should always use protection. Which NOS has better file sharing, remote access, and mail service. Ubuntu or Windows Server 2003.
Ubuntu wins hand down. There are so many different options for file sharing with Ubuntu - secure or just "regular". Windows barely comes with anything, and its pretty ropey at best. With mail, Ubuntu again has a great offering - so much more than the lame "SMTP Service" that you get with Windows. Remote access is laughable with Windows - Ubuntu again comes with so much more.
Answer to:
Which NOS is better in terms of ease of use, reliability, and support. Ubuntu or Windows Server 2003.
For me Ubuntu wins hands down. Reliability is amazing - the uptime for my Ubuntu servers is way higher than anything any Windows system has ever even dreamt about. As for the support, well, when 2008 goes wrong the only support is google - and thats pretty rough. With Ubuntu I can actually speak to other people who use it and know the answers.

If its a LAN party then your internet bandwidth won't matter. While most people now have gigabit NICs, the older 100Mbit cards is where you should focus support for. Make sure your switch is autosensing!

how can i restore my laptop because i have virus which wont let me do anything please help me
Ah yes - good old Microsoft Windows viruses. If you do indeed wish to perform a restore, then I'd make a backup of your important files first (unless you have one already). You can do this by booting from a Linux Live CD (Linux won't be affected by your Microsoft-only virus) and then copying files to a USB drive. If you like, while you've got Linux up and running, you could run a virus scan...

General use of the word "cache":
In computer science, a cache (pronounced /ˈkæʃ/ kash) is a component that improves performance by transparently storing data such that future requests for that data can be served faster. Its such an open ended question - like asking are Ford cars reliable? You couldn't really class a 1908 Ford as reliable. Nope, nothing. But then I can't say I've ever even seen a virus for Linux (though apparently there may be one of these mythical beasts). The best thing to use for this is a computer. You can then hook your computer up to your TV, and...

How can I convert youtube videos into HD formats and get 1080p output?
You don't gain anything by upscaling the video. The details are not there, they won't magically appear when you upscale the picture. Furthermore, re-encoding the video (to a lossy format) will always degrade quality.
So just send the original video to your HD ready TV.

How Can I Tell If My HP Laptop Has a Virus?
If your HP laptop is running Linux, then the chances of you having a virus are virtually nill. If you're unfortunate enough to have a version of Microsoft Windows and you haven't been running virus protection, then you have a very high chance of having one of more infections.

189MB RAM isn't enough to run a modern operating system well. Even advanced systems designed for low resource systems (such as Xubuntu) like 256MB. I'd get more RAM - typically as much as your hardware will support. 1GB is a good minimum. Typical entry level systems nowadays come with 3 GB RAM.
Answer to:
how does usb memory stick work with movies
Sounds like you're all confuzzled. First up, downloading data won't make your laptop's memory go low. Running multiple applications simultaneously will affect 'free' memory though. A lot of people use DVDs or portable drives, or simply...

If you enter internet connection info[ ip, physical id, DNS etc.] and it shows 'connected' but still internet cannot be browsed, what is the problem? if I run 'ipconfig /all' it doesn't show those info. what can I do?
There could be any number of problems, most importantly you haven't mentioned whether or not you actually have an internet service. If you do have an internet service, then you need to say what it is (satellite? dial-up modem?) and the hardware you have. I can attach two computers and they'll be connected, but obviously there is no way either of them would ever get internet access!

Some have editing software built in too so you can cut/paste, make DVD menus, etc. I found I could get roughly 2 videos onto a DVD with reasonable quality when I did it. Is 20GB of bandwidth alot?
A limit of 20Gb of data transfers could be a lot, or it could be a little. If the limit is per day and you only ever use email then it would be a lot. If the limit is per month and you are an avid user of the internet, then it is very little. As an example, I typically transfer anything between 1 and 5 GB a day at home. At work I would typically transfer 50-200 GB a day.

Try running from an Ubuntu Live CD for a while. Just do your usual thing - listen to some music, browse the web, watch some movies files, etc. If the system hangs while using the Live CD then the chances are you do have some sort of hardware problem. If it doesn't hang then it is more likely to be a problem with your currently installed OS.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop. It will not play my Sims 2 games (they keep freezing in the beginning). Dell says there is nothing that can be done to fix this b/c the graphics card is in the motherboard and cant be upgraded. Any ways around this?:0(
The Intel GMA x3100 that comes with the Dell Inspiron 1525 will play The Sims 2 just fine, as will the low-powered 2.0GHz celeron processor.
If the game freezes at the start there is another problem. You may need to reinstall the game, or you may need to reinstall your OS. I assume you have allocated as much RAM as possible to the GMA?

A company manager wants to get a operating system. linux or windows ??
reasons please
It depends what the company manager wants exactly. More often than not Linux will deliver. Linux has some of the best software available, most of which simply isn't available on Windows platforms or is too costly to maintain and implement.
Answer to:
For a nursing home organisation.. which operating system would work best ... linux or windows ? choose one and give reason please.
Probably Linux, due to the lower total cost of ownership - which is a must for places like nursing homes that can have very limited income. The operating system is free, it can run very well on low spec hardware, and it doesn't need to be constantly "cleaned", "defragged" and otherwise expensively maintained. My parents are "silver surfers" and they love Linux...

Will transferring files via wifi affect my Internet speed?
Yes; as you've only got a finite amount of bandwidth. I'm going to assume that the example you're asking about is that you're in your home and all 4 of you have laptops, and you're all using wireless. You have a 4 Mbps internet connection, so with just one person online they get the full 4 Mbps to themselves. With 4 people online that 4 Mbps is shared between all 4.

That "Blue screen of death" is a Microsoft Windows error. What u mean by a cache memory why it is used. where it is located?
A CPU cache is a cache used by the central processing unit of a computer to reduce the average time to access memory. The cache is a smaller, faster memory which stores copies of the data from the most frequently used main memory locations. As long as most memory accesses are cached memory locations, the average latency of memory accesses will be closer to the cache latency than to the latency...

You can often keep a lot of what you have - such as the case, PSU and optical drives, and only upgrade a few components as you can afford them. Make sure that in the future you don't break copyrights. Use a free operating system such as Linux - there are plenty of distros around. Ubuntu, Linux Mint or OpenSuSe are some good places to start out. Next up use legal music sources - there are plenty out there! For movies grab the £3 bargains from Blockbusters - much better quality anyway :)

Does formating a hardware disc help from crc(cyclic redundancy check) and if it does does the formating take long and i once tried to format it gets to one I and stops so am i inpatient or does it take long
Formatting a partition on a drive can take just a few seconds and will make the partition ready for use by the OS. Check the SMART status of the drive to ensure that any CRC errors aren't the result of a hardware failure, or impending hardware failure.

Am I right in believing that by running yahoo messenger it can slow my laptop down because it holds a lot of memory to cache.My laptop is running somewhat slow and a friend told me to uninstall so that my laptop will go faster?
While any processes running will use resources, you won't see a significant difference when using Yahoo messenger. Unfortunately it seems your friend is just guessing without actually having performed any analysis into the problem.

What is the Fake Trojan computer virus?
While a trojan isn't a virus, you simply use anti-malware software to remove it, in the same way as you'd remove a Windows virus.

If I replace my hard drive in my laptop will I have to reload my OS and windows office? What if I don't have the CD's for them anymore?
Yes, you'll have to reload the data onto your new hard disk drive. If you don't have the original CDs then you're in a bit of a bad place already - Windows goes wrong a lot! Anyway, you can simply copy am image of your current drive over on to the new one. One caveat - the new drive will need to be the same size or larger.
There is a tonne of free cloning software out there,...

What is a reasonable price to pay for a refurbished HP desktop (CPU only) running Windows XP home with a Pentium IV processor, 766 MB RAM, 40 GB HD? The geek is asking $699 which seems high to me since you can buy a new bundle for $399 or less.
For just the CPU about £10. You can get a fairly decent new CPU for £25.

For a Pentium IV.. well.. they are ancient! I wouldn't even bother when you can get a new system for £160 (260 USD)

Would too many computer processes slow down a computer? How do you know which you need and which you can delete? I closed all my windows and still had 45 processes, see REFERENCE LINK. Click on "full size" above photo to get a better view.
Yes they would. The link there shows you are using Microsoft Windows, for which the "task manager" is next to useless.
Rather than killing processes, you should instead look at what is starting any unnecessary processes in the first place. You've got a lot of svchost entries there, so I'd guess you've got IIS installed and are running various websites?

Answer to:
Do I need a Firewall for my computer?
Whilst you don't 'need' one if you don't have any externally accessible services running or if your computer isn't connected to the internet, you may as well run one anyway. Especially insecure systems such as Microsoft Windows do need firewalls - and a whole load of other security tools to help plug all the leaks.

I had to reboot my computer and it has deleted my sound card how do i fix it?
Rebooting by itself won't delete a sound card (driver)! Some systems (Microsoft Windows) need frequent reboots (like each time you install or remove any software).
You are most likely using Microsoft Windows and for some reason the sound driver has become corrupted. Simply reinstall the driver (available from the manufacturer's site).

I am looking for a free software which can simply put passwords on folders without the need of encrypting it
A password to access a directory is pointless without encryption as you'll just be able to access it without the password anyway!

Someone gave me a DELL tower running xp pro. There is a name and password prompt on the log on screen. I do NOT know the password. Without the password I CANNOT get past the log on screen. Catch 22 again! So frustrating. I think the tower is functional.
You'll probably want to format & reinstall anyway unless you totally trust the person - who known what nasties they could have installed!
But to just clear out the password is simple using this Linux-based Windows password reset tool:
