Answer to:
why sea water at deep ocean doesn't turn to ice? ( considering low temperature and very high pressure)
density of water .... the density of water increases down to near freezing and thus cold water sinks .. to a point ... just before the freeze point the density of water decreases (starting of a phase change) making it rise..... thus the only water to freeze will be at the top

If an electric motor is 230v with 20 amp on the name plate does that mean the moment i hook it up it is drawing 20 amps without a load on it
No.. It just means the motor is designed to run at a full load of 20 amps... its still possible to run over or under those amps basedd on actual motor load... but it should be able to run at 20 amps continuously without overheating or damage

from my info; in a circuit,volt. is needed to provide current.So what is the difference between voltage-source and current-source circuits?
example .. in industry you may have a transmitter that varies the output voltage as say the pressure increases on the transmitter. thus it is ranged in voltage... but it is more common for the transmitter to output more current as the pressure increases. thus one transmitter is say 4-20 milliamp and the other is say 0-3 volts

Answer to:
why sea water at deep ocean doesn't turn to ice? ( considering low temperature and very high pressure)
dewshaft answered it but maybe not obvious.... water gets denser (and thus sinks)until it gets near freezing .. then (due to crystization) it gets less dense and rises. thus water on the ocean floor will never freeze until the it freezes from the top down... thus water at great depths is not cold enough to freeze water especially salt water.

What is the difference between a concrete driveway & an asphalt driveway? Specifically, how do I tell them apart from each other?
Asphalt driveway is a roll mass of small rock in asphalt ( a black tar). It is layed hot and rolled after which it cools and hardens. Even though it hardens it never gets as hard as concrete. This allows it to be elastic enough to adapt to the contour beneath it. However it is not as strong as concrete.
Concrete is made by mixing agregate (rock, sand, pebbles etc) in calcium oxide powder...
Answer to:
a solid was immersed in water. if a portion of the sample sticks out the water, how will it effect the calculation of the density?
denisty is the mass per unit volume. Experimentally it is measured by weighing the solid and measuring the volume by submersion in water.... if not totally submersed .. the volume displaced will be understated thus the weight per volume will be overstated... ie. a greater density reported than actually should have been determined.

Answer to:
How could the thermal efficiency decrease, if the pressure of the steam entering the boiler increased in nonideal rankine cycle?
In a simple way the increase in steam pressure leads to an increase in temperature of the steam/water in the boiler system. As this temperature goes up ... the difference in temperature between the combustion gasses and the steam system decreases. thus less heat is transfered ... This leads to a greater stack loss less efficient system....

Why is dissolved organic matter in water important to aquatic life forms?
The cells of living matter use dissolved, colloidal, solid organic matter Ie. carbon as a source of energy. By combining it with oxygen it provides the energy ... Now if there is an abundance of carbon ... other life forms .. such as algeas .. they may thrive and if they do .. they can lower the oxygen in the water enough to make the water unliveable for higher life forms such as fish etc......
Answer to:
why does ice melt faster in water than oil
The simple answer is that heat transfer of ice sitting in a bath of oil verses water ... the difference in the heat transfer rates is due to the difference in conductive heat transfer of the two fluids surrounding the ice .. the thermal conductivity of oils (~0.16 watt/degK-M) is lower than that for water (~0.6 watt/degK-M). Thus the heat is carried away by the ice more quickly in water...

If 0.609 mol Na is mixed with 0.308 mol N2, and 0.136 mol Na3N is obtained, what is the percent yield for the reacion?
1. determine the limiting reactant ...
How many moles of Na .. 0.609 ..
how many moles of N .. 2x0.308= 0.616 ...
Now Na3N require 3 Na for each N therefore Na is the limitng reactant since 0.609/3 = 0.203 mole of Na3N possible at 100 % conversion ... thus yeilds in molar % = 0.136/0.203 = 67%

In other words 100 watt bulb is in power so say yo have 120 volt service 100/120 = 0.8 amps ... so on a 20 amp service fuse/breaker you can have as many as 20/0.8 = 25 twenty five "100 watt bulbs" .... since you said "flat" you maybe have a different voltage but just do the math ...

1994 mercury sable oil light comes on after 15 to 30 mins of driving, why and how do i fix it?
As an engine warms up .. oil gets thinner (less viscous). This results in a drop in pressure ... Usually the clearances on valve guides and engine bearings is tight so that this drop in pressure does not fall below the low pressure switch which turns the low oil pressure light on.... As the engine gets more worn out the clearances get bigger dropping the oil pressure even lower. With the oil...

I got 225/60/15's on my truck. Would a 235/45/17's raise my truck or would it lower it?. It has a 2" drop front and 3" rear
her's how you figure... 225 is millimeters across the tire .. 60 is aspect ratio meaning the heightof the the tire above the rim is 60% of the 225 width .. which is 135 mm or 5.3 inches (note 25.4 mm per inch) .. so with a 15 inch diameter the radius is half or 7.5 inches .. add the aspect height of 5.3 gives 12.8 inches ..
now for the 235 .. times 45% gives 106 mm or 4.2 inches.. plus half of...

If I have inner radius of 54 inches and outer radius of 108 inches for a spiral straicase with 180 degree turn and the total height from floor to ceiling of 2nd level is 12 feet how many risers or steps will I have in staircase?
The number of steps (and risers) does not depend on the radius of the spiral but rather the height of the riser... usually the riser is 8 inches tall thus 12 ft x 12 inches per foot equals 144 inches... divide that by 8 gives 18 steps

Does the double-pole circuit breaker for a 3-wire (double 120V) circuit have to be connected across BOTH hot bus bars in the electrical panel? Or can the the double-pole circuit breaker be connected across the same hot bus bar?
Iwnit's answer is correct for why both breakers must be attached but there is another reason for the need for the breaker to span different buss bars... The phases between the two supplies are out-of-phase so that the appliance being fed by the two supplies sees a higher net voltage ie apx 220 volts if both feeds are 120.

Actually the efficiency drops as motor size decreases since the "fixed losses" become a greater percentage of the total hp. But for a given load need you will find the most efficient size to be one sized to run at about 75% of load. It is best to get the actual efficiency rating of the supplier when making decisions. Motor efficiency changes with manufacturer.

An apple provides 115 kcal of energy. What mass of water, using this energy, could change its temp from 0.0°C to 100.0°C? Okay so tis problem is on my chemistry worksheet and I got that the mass would be 0.00115g. Is that correct?
cal = 1 gram water x 1 degC
115 Kcal = 115,000 cal
the temperature change is 100
so 115,000 = ? grams water x 100 degC
solving you get ? grams water = 115,000/100 = 1,115

Can a electrical motor draw more current, than its rate , when overheats or loaded harder,
yes motors are rated in terms of "service factor" .... thus a motor rated at 1 hp with a 1.25 service factor can draw the current needed to run at 1.25 hp... beyond 25% detrimental effects from the heat produced in the motor can permanently damage the windings ...

Assuming a height of 1730 ft (~527 m), terminal velocity for a human body to be ~120 mph, how long would it take a human to fall from the top of the Willis (formerly Sears) Tower to the ground?
1st calculate the time to get to terminal velocity using the accelleration formula
v1=v0 + a t
v0=0
a=32ft/sec^2
v1=120 mi/hr x 5280ft/mi x 1hr/3600sec
solve for t
next use the position formula
s1 = s0 + v1 t + 1/2 a t^2
s0 = 0
solve for s1 using t from above... this is the position at that time....
subtract that amount from the total 1730ft and calcualte the rest at...

Please Help!! I need help with a math/chemistry problem: What percent of the total mass of one atom of iron comes from electrons. The mass of one iron atom is 9.274 x 10^-23. The mass of one electron is 9.110x10^-28. Please show the steps. Thank You!!
The above answere assumed iron has only one electron .. it has many ... iron in its metallic state has 26 electrons... (determine that from the 26 protrons .. its position on the periodic table) so take
26 x 9.11x10^-28 = mass of electrons = 236.86x10^-28
divide that by total mass = 236.86x10-28 / 9.274x10^-23

Other than reducing consumption, are there any other tehnologies that are proven on a large scale?
Contrary to others .. the production of nuclear energy has very little CO2 emissions even considering the full life cycle of the end product... and electric motors come in all sizes dwarfing even the largest Cummins diesel engine... even most new train locomotives now use the diesel engine to run as a generator to run the electric train engine... most are not direct coupled....

First of all the appliance design is sound and even a do it yourself person is quite capable of repair and should not be intimidated ....It sounds that you have electic ignition... meaning a glow element... the element works by getting hot ... as it gets hot the resistence to electricity increases.... when the resistence reaches a high enough level the gas valve it allowed to open letting gas...

Is there any chance of having high voltages in the neutral wire?
I always explain curremt and voltage as being simmilar to water flow and water pressure in a garden hose. Voltage is equivalent to pressure, flow equivalent to amps.
So if the supply of the hose is 120 psi and the faucet is off the supply side (hot)reads 120 with the downstream side (ground)zero psi. Open the valve to start flow. The supply side stays near 120 psi with the downstream side...

The truck passes over each pier. Each pier is rated for 10,000 lbs. Once in the middle the truck is only giving 5,000 lb load on each pier. The bird didn't matter as long as it gets off before reaching the next pier.
The classical lever problem... the weight at each end is determined by the force x distance from the support point.... so the span of 3 miles when the truck is over pier...

So how many moles of Mg to start with 0.24/mwt = 0.24/55 = 0.004moles
so the equation is
Mn + 2 HCl = MnCl2 + H2
but essentailly one mole of Mn give one mole H2
so 0.004 moles of Mn gives o.oo4 moles of H2
0.004 x mwt of H2 (x2) = 0.008 grams H2

Any thoughts on possible causes for an electrical cord to heat up when it's plugged into an outlet?
It sounds like the house wiring is very old. Back in the old days a home was wired for as little as 30 to 60 amps. Today most are wired for 200- 300 amps. Again electric flow (amps causes heat from resistence in the wire. The larger the gage wire .. the less the resistance .. the less heat. But another effect kicks in when the wire size is small the voltage drops at the end nearer the user .....

As a pratical matter most larger motors always have a bit of imbalance on the circuit leads especially when first starting due to their higher impedence which trips sensitive GFCI's. Industry uses larger ones when using heavy duty tools but quite frankly these are expensive and less sensitive than the smaller load types. Why does the dew on the grass outside freeze when the temperature does not go below 0 degrees Celsius (freezing point of water)? Could it be that there is another molecule present with a higher freezing point? (Lowest temp was 2 degrees overnight)...
It has nothing to do with the temperature at ground... ground temperature is usually higher than air temp during the night... It is the effect of moisture evaporation. Cooling towers .. water temperature will run about 10 degF below ambiet air running through the tower... The dew will form due to a surface effect and as it evaporates it further cools thereby freezing under the proper...

Raylrodr is pretty close... a catalyst allows a reaction to occurr at a lower energy but is a chemical reaction occurrs ie changes one molicule to another... in the case of paints there is an evaporation which is not a chemical change .. ie water evaporates , ammonia water evaporates, solvent evaporates... but there are some exotic paints where you do add a material just before application ......

Again follow your heart ... good advice .. but you need to realize taking time to congratulate him is friendship and it means you really still care about him and are still wanting him to like you... since the relationship was intimate it will be difficult for you to remain friends without getting intimate again (and I don't necessarily mean sexual) but intimate in sharing thoughts etc......

What kind of damage occurs when you run hot water with the garbage disposal?
Most hot water heaters target "HOT" at about 140 degrees .. hot boiling water is 212 degF ... neither is considered hot to the compoenents of a garbage disposal. Even boiling water cools hot bearings.
Answer to:
My garbage disposal is clogged. The other sink is not clogged and the trap is clear. The disposal runs fine but water does not drain. Would there be clog inside the disposal? Would this indicate a new one is needed?
Thanks.
If you have had a lot of potatoe peels or stringy stuff disposed the outlet of the disposal at the 90 degree elbow usually becomes packed. Usually there are only two screws to remove the elbow. So lossen the compression fitting on plumbing where the black elbow enters the house plumbing.. unscrew the two screws holding the elbow to the disposal. and check for debris...
But before doing this...

Previous tenants ruined the bathroom wall. It looks like there is a layer a wallpaper, spackle, another layer of wallpaper, and then a layer of latex paint. How could I remove these layers so that I can tile or put up tileboard easily?
Best to remove the drywall and put up standard "concrete backer board" or "Hardi-backer" if you are tiling over the wall.
Answer to:
In order to drill into concrete...do you need a special drill or can you just use an ordinary drill with a concrete bit?
Standard concrete bit on a drill prefferable with hammer action will go slow but will work for small jobs... but if a lot of drilling is required get a rotary hammer with appropriate bits... The rotary hammer will drill 10 times as fast and is better designed for the heat created in the drill bearings

Why? Safe?
Voltage is the equivalent to pressure in a fluid flow system... Turn on a faucet at one location the pressure drops at the other... Same applies for electric... the wires at a given voltage can only pass so much current.... Is there a danger... not really .. the circuit breaker or fuse will prevent too much current flow preventing the voltage from dropping ridiculously low...

A falling stone takes t = 0.271 s to travel past a window x = 1.50 m tall (see figure below). From what height above the top of the window did the stone fall?
so set the point of refference to top of window. and determine "V" velocity at top of window from 1.5 = V x t + 1/2 g t^2 where t=0.271, g=9.80665 .. this gives V=4.20625 m/s ..
so the speed at top of window was 4.2 m/s now calculate the time to get that speed from V = g x t solve for t gets t=V/g or 4.20625/9.80665 = 0.429 s ..
so now calculate the distance traveled in 0.42892...

I replaced the fan motor with a new one. Last night i woke up to a warm house,went to check the a/c and the fan was not blowing.I turned it off and and stuck a knife in the fan and gave it a push and it started working,what would cause it to stop again?
The problem is the capacitor... its purpose is to kick start the motor in the proper direction .. if it goes bad no kick .. ie no motor start ... but even worse.. if it goes partly bad it reduces the voltage to the motor and motor runs with higher amps gets hot and kicks out on the motor thermal protection ... Capacitors cost about $25 .. much less than the motors

WHAT IS THE MTHANE DENSITY AT 23 BAR AND 55 CENTIGRADE
I'll do it in english units
16 is the mol weight
Ideal gas laws.. pv=nRT or v=nRT/p
v=solve for
n=1
p=23 x 14.696 = 337.87
R=10.73 ft3 psi/degR lb-mole
T=459.67 + (1.8 x 55)= 554degR
so v= 1x10.73x554/(337.87)=17.59
so density is 16/17.59 = 0.909 lbs/ft3
do the math to change units in CGS system

A well insulated home actually maintains temperature fairly well. If the house is cooled all the time the cooler night keeps the condenser pressure down costing less ... There were 34000 people at a ball game, the days receipts were $240000, how many people paid $12 and how many paid $5?
two equations two unknowns a solvable scenario
first x + y = 34,000 .. or x = 34,000 - y
second 12x + 5y = 240,000
so sub .. 12(34,000 - y) + 5y = 240,000
or 408,000 - 12y + 5y = 240,000 or 408,000-240000 = 7y or 168,000= 7y or y = 24,000 so 24,000 people paid $5 leaveing 10,000 to pay $12 each

The sum of two numbers is 56. Their difference is 4. Find the two numbers
Captain gave the correct answer ... but here's how you approach the problem with algebra....
x + y = 56 and x - y = 4
two equations two unknowns a solveable system...
x-y=4 solving for x gives x = y + 4
substite in the second equation x + y = 56 gives (y+4)+ y = 56 or 2y + 4 = 56 subtract 4 from both sides gives 2y = 52 divide both sides by 2 gives y=26 solving for x ... x + y =...

The hotel charges before tax in the 2nd city were $1000 lower than the 1st.The tax on the hotel bill was 7.5% in 1st city & 6% in the 2nd. After the trip, total tax paid on accommodation expenses was $750.How much was the bill for the 1st city before tax?
x= bill in 1st city before tax
y= bill in 2nd city before tax
1st statement .. x-1000=y
2nd & 3rd statements 0.075x + 0.06y = $750 ...
so two equations two unknowns solve... easiest to sub for y of the first expression into the second ..
0.075x + 0.06(x-1000)= 750 ..solving gives 0.135x - 60 = 750 .. gives 0.135x=690 .. gives
x=$5,111.11

In a box there are 4 chocolate bars, 3 gums and two mints. What is the probability that you pick a chocolate bar and a gum? I know I need to use the P(A) = n(A) / n(S) formula, and I'm pretty sure that the n(S) is equal to 9P2. I just don't know n(A).
Eltinwe gave a correct answer but to your notation... yes for the first selection (the chocolate bars) n(A)=4, n(S)=9 so the P(a)= 4/9 ... the second event picking a gum after one item has been removed is n(a)= 3, n(s)=8 or P(a)= 3/8 .. so the probability of both happening is the product .. 3/8 x 4/9 = 1/6

Simplify this fraction: (5x^4 - 405)/(5x - 15)
check your answer.
Remove factor of 5 from all terms becomes
(x^4-81)/(x-3) ... next expand numerator.... becomes {(x^2-9)(x^2+9)}/(x-3).... further expand first numerator term... become {(x-3)(x+3)(x^2+9)}/(x-3)... divide like terms becomes
(x+3)(X^2+9) .... thats as simple as it gets ... for check sub in x=1 in original and the simplified expression you will find they are equal...

Use the given conditions to write an equation for the line in the indicated form.. The Problem is : Passing through (4,5) and parallel to the line whose equation is y=2x-6; point-slope form... "anybody understand this?"
Parrallel lines have the same slope...
linear equations have the form y=mX+b where m is the slope... in this case the given line has a slope of 2 so your new line has a slope of 2... so
y=2x+b so now find b by substitution of the point you do know... (4,5) ie (x,y) thus 5=2(4)+b 5=8+b b=-3 so you new line is y=2x + -3 or y=2x-3

Wet or dry dog food ??....
Wet dog food has a density greater than water which is 8.34 lbs/gallon 60 liters is 60/3.786 = 15.85 gallons so if water the weight would be 8.34 x 15.85 = 132 lbs add say about 10% since dog food has some solids which means the 1.1 x 132 = 145 lbs
Dry dog food has a bulk density of about half the weight of water so say about 4 lbs per gallon so 15.85 gallons x...

Splicing usually means making a connecting in the wire itself without a "box" This can be one by code with the correct spicing arrangement but is rare in home wiring.

Dixie2,
Electricty flowing through wire will elevate its temperature. If wire is large enough, the rise in temperature is very small. If wire is smaller (for the same amount of electricity flow) it will get hotter. If you try to send more current down the wire it gets hotter. So when they wire a house they place a size wire in a circuit and protects that size wire with a fuse or circuit...

intensity in 3 dimensions is proportional to 1/r^2 more percisely I = P/(4*Pi*r^2)
thus for 10m .... I=P/(4*3.14*10^2)=P/1256
so if P is in watts say 100 watt light then I=0.0796 watts/sq meter
