Should our government provide free air purifying masks to all non-smokers? :-)
No, people put up with smog for years and didn't complain about it. And now people have to put up with carbonmonoxide on a daily basis. So the odd wiff of smoke will not harm anyone. People should relax. I am sure they are getting far greater harm through the processed foods that they eat than from a small trail of smoke.

You only hurt the ones you love. True? False? If true, do you know why? Does it apply to anyone you know/knew?
True. Yes, I know why, because one does not fulfill the obligations that true love requires. And yes, it does apply to people I know, family in particular. Unfortunately ones expectations of family are greater than friends or acquaintances and not everyone can meet those expectations for whatever reason. So disappointment is, often, more frequent than one would like.

It depends on the situation:
If it is their job to do so and I am paying them for it then, yes. However, where there is no obligation on their part, no, I do not grumble, nor do I deligate tasks to them. I do it myself. People who oblige others to do things are only trying to control them.

Funnily enough, I think 'doing something with your life' is purely subjective. Just pick yourself up and keep going. One of the main keys to success is to not get discouraged at the slightest thing. However, you have to assess your chances of success. They say the definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over again and not getting anywhere, so if you have reached that point then maybe it's time to change tack and reassess your strategy and goals.

That is a difficult question which requires us to analyse every action that we take and every spoken word that we utter. Within a framework of social etiquette I try to make rational decisions. Beyond that are the feelings you have as a result of the usual bumps and scrapes that you acquire along the passage of life.

Very basically I think it was born out of man's need to understand the cycle of life and death and goodness and evil.
BUT over the years it has been used to subdue and control the citizens of a land or country and is still used today to that end. As one leader said to his citizens when the price of flour and sugar went up 100% 'Pray to God' to assuage their anger and despiration.

You may well be right there. Interestingly, some of the highly extrovert people that I have known have contracted serious illnesses at a young age. I often wonder if their 'largess' is a cover up for an undue amount of stress. Of course, it is difficult to judge people in this way without knowing exactly what is going on inside their head and body, but their might be a case for it somewhere.

Do you lose interest in making friends with someone when you find out they're religious or part of a group you dislike?
When anyone adopts religious-speak in their everyday lives I find it off putting. Religion is a private thing and should be kept to oneself. If they are using religious-speak then the chances are that they have been brain-washed and are trying to brain-wash others too. So unfortunately it tends to dampen any enthusiasm I have for befriending them.

Interesting question. However, if it wasn't an FBI agent taking the reins, someone like 9/11 terrorist would eventually come along and organize the willing participants. Do you enjoy sharing your faith with others? Why or why not?
Definately not. Faith, believe and religion are private matters. There used to be a saying 'Never talk about religion or politics' and I think that is right in the real world. They are both sensitive subjects and not worth getting upset over.
Answer to:
Are people becoming more sensitive? Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Why?
I think they are becoming more aggressive rather than sensitive.

France or Norway - which is more convenient to live in? Why?
I would prefer France because I love the food and the style and nature and weather-wise it is so varied. You have wonderful skiing and beautiful beaches. It has beautiful historical sites. The French can be difficult at times and usually refuse to speak any other language other than their own so you have to learn French but every countries has its good folks and bad so that wouldn't bother me....

Do you think other countries don't like the US because of our freedoms or because of how we've treated them? Are we likable or un? Why?
Because the US doesn't like them. Because of black slavery. Because of multi-national company hegemony. On top of it people don't like the over-liberal, any behaviour goes effect on their own cultures. Also, the lack of historical depth and overt materialism. Together with this, the US is remote from so many cultures, Americans travel little which makes them culturally insensitive and very...

I remember misreading one of your questions so that I gave the exact opposite of what you were asking:( However, I think it is a question of lazy reading more often or not or being wired into the wrong subject so that words in your question trigger answers related to what the person has on their mind. If you live in a make-believe world so long that it becomes your only reality can you ever go back or are you stuck there forever after?
Depends on whether that is the only 'reality' you know or not. What about children who have been brought up by wolves in the forest or those who have been locked in cellars and abused their entire lives? I should think it is almost impossible to bring them back into the 'real' world. Or the preacher who brings his only son up with false beliefs ie that everyone is evil and should be...

Yes and yes. I know the reason exactly and that is prejudice or perhaps jealousy would be a better word. It was an attempt to knock me down. But I later found out that she had more or less been ostracized by many people I didn't even know. I guess everyone gets their just desserts in the end.

Does apologizing to party X for something you said about party Y(who is unrelated/unknown to X) which is true make any sense to you? Why?
Not really. But why would one be talking about Y to X in the first place? I guess it depends on what you said and how you said it. Some people don't like negative talk about others, full stop, whether they know them or not. Perhaps if you sensed that X was unhappy with the topic of conversation then you would apologize. Otherwise it seems superfluous to me.

I don't think there is an 'instead' about it. I think lots of couples watch porn together to keep their relationship alive. Not to mention couples who engage in group sex, partner swapping and orgies. I even know women who send their husbands off to distant lands to have their fling just so they can keep their marriage going. 99% of the men return, so maybe it's a good idea. Many women also...

2. Before having a child you can do exactly as you please. After having a child you are on call 24 hours a day and have to work your lives around the child. You cannot be selfish...

Possibly although I would have thought that Answerbag has a fairly safe system. However, I have seen a prominent member on here openly identifying which street people live in and in my opinion should be delt with appropriately. Not a kind act and very immature.

Answer to:
What do you think of people who make comments that a woman deserved or even brought it upon herself to get raped, based on her behavior/dress
That's a difficult one Rosie. No one deserves to be raped. However, some women create the environment or enter environments in which rape is a possibility. Is the girl who goes on the subway at midnight in revealing clothing asking to be raped? No, but she has willingly entered a danger zone. Part of avoiding rape is acting sensibly and being aware of the dangers in whatever environment or...

I ignore it. Not everyone looks good in 'pretty' clothes. I have a French friend who dresses like a madame in a brothel. She is tiny and can get away with frilly clothes and short skirts with very high heels. I am very tall and would look like a cream puff pastry in her clothes. I prefer elegantly simple.

People who absolutely and persistently insist on one doing something are a pain in the neck. Answer to:
Do you keep your social life (with non-family members) separate from your family life? Why or why not?
To a certain extent. Family life is private (ie not everything should be shared with non-family members). Usually it depends on the non-family member though ie how intrusive, manipulative, gossipy, out to cause harm etc. Friends who are friends for life are rare. Most friends come and go and may not be as loyal as one would like them to be.

Have you ever read 'Jonathon Livingston Seagull' by Bach? I was introduced to it by a Quaker friend of mine who read it at her mother's funeral. Soaring above the madding crowd and the squabbling can be quite therapeutic. The higher you soar, the freer and more peaceful you are. Sometimes in the frenzy and hectic nature of life we forget its beauty and its gift.

Is it fair to fire a woman from a place such as a strip club, a topless bar, or Hooters if she gains weight or becomes pregnant?
If those were the conditions under which she was hired, then yes, it is fair. Weight is a deciding factor in many jobs and will become more so in future. Just look at Playboy and more recently Ryan Air. Weight matters, unfortunately or maybe fortunately, as people will try to take more care of themselves.

As I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted, what is the difference between the person who is an admirer and one who is jealous?
Alot. They are at too opposite points on the scale. The admirer is delighted with the qualities they see and wouldn't want to change them. One who is jealous despises those qualities in another and wishes they had them instead of the other. In other words, the jealous person would go as far as destroying the qualities or attributes that an admirer would try to preserve or enhance.

Parents: How important is it to you to know your child(ren)'s friends? Why?
Around the age of 12 it is important, at least, to know what sort of group your children are hanging out with. It is a time when children can be easily influenced by their peers and they might not have the future that you envision for your child.

The quality of your character is best measured by whom? Why?
Oneself. I think it is hard to rely on others to give an objective view of one's character. If one did, one would constantly being buffeted and pulled in all directions rather like a buoy in turbulent water. People know the difference between right and wrong, good and evil and we all know which side of the fence we are on, so we are all capable of judging our strengths and weaknesses without...

I think that bitterness is difficult to shrug off expecially if the offending person does not change. You can try to forgive and forget but if the person continues along the same hurtful path it is very hard to do.

How would you like to spend your life in a chair, attached 24/7 to oxygen and only get up to use the bathroom? Your life is good, right?
Reminds me of someone I know. Being alive is what they wanted even though they had difficulties getting around. I don't think that life is good by average standards at all but some people do appreciate the time they have left on earth even if it is restricted. It is when constant pain and dependency become unbearable that they question it.

When you're wrong you admit it and apologize, right? Some folks think that is a sign of weakness. What's wrong with them anyway?
Ah! Like politeness. I don't think it is seen as a sign of weakness, in fact, quite the opposite. But, I do think that some people see it as an opportunity to push people further into the ground ie to exercise their feelings of superiority over the person who apologizes. However, if someone continuously apologizes for the slightest thing I would doubt their self-confidence and wonder if they...

You talk about genes in your answer on another thread. Supposing the younger man lives till he is one hundred and doesn't die prematurely of some genetic disease. Does this affect the outcome? We are all programmed to die at different ages so why would 4 years make any difference? People are physically attracted to suitable parteners. Women who marry much older men risk bringing their...

Was life really better "back in your day" or do you just remember the good times?
I think so. People had less and yet seemed to be happier. Now the world seems to have become too materialistic, too over-populated, too regulated and altogether a more dangerous place. I dare say it will get worse as everyone scrabbles for resources, jobs and money.

How do you feel when people show you little understanding when you want desperately to be understood?
I sort of feel betrayed. If someone has been my friend for a long time and suddenly cannot see my point of view I question our friendship and whether we really had one in the first place. However, many people have problems and I think it is the ones with problems who have no time for others. So maybe one should question their state of mind, drop them and go and find some more understanding...

It depends on their behaviour. Some Arabs are sophisticated and cultured and others aren't. I think it depends on who people have come in contact with. If they have never met any Arabs they believe in what the media tells them. However, having said that, cultural differences play a big part eg, the treatment of women, dress code, men's attitude towards women, eating habits (ie eating with...

I think it is because people have a need to 'belong' and provide meaning to their lives. The belly dancer is a feature in most muslim societies and yet no western family...

Answer to:
Are you one of those parents that will buy your kids boxing gloves and let them "fight it out", or parents who let them "talk it out?."
Hitting is not an option for my kids. However, my son came home one day and said that he had hit a girl. So I rushed to the school to apologise and the teacher replied that it was quite all right. A girl had punched him in the stomach 3 times and it was only then that he lashed out to stop her. The teacher felt he had done the right thing. Sometimes there is just no other way.
Answer to:
Should overweight/obese children or adults be shown in general TV commercials?
Because they are not selling their fatness or saying that this is the right way to be. But they are human like the rest of us and I think it is cruel to discriminate especially when being large is often no fault of their own.

If you were disrespected, humiliated and insulted in front of others would you smile and do nothing or strike back and do something?
I would either smile and ask why they were doing this or say I am not listening to this and walk out. To desrespect, humiliate and insult is the weakness of the perpetrator not the person they are doing it too and on-lookers usually can see the assault for what it is. No one can make you feel humiliated if you don't allow them to.

self confidence is important. you agree? why/ why not?
Self confidence is attractive and it is an enabler. In other words self confident people tend to go ahead and do things without fear of failure. No one wants to be around a doubter. However, self confidence in another can be deceptive because it often makes the person seem more capable and intelligent than they really are. People with great knowledge understand that they do not know...

Nice question. Everyone has a negative side. Are women not liberated enough today to walk through life as equals?Do they have to viciously fight men with hatred to show they are equal?
I put it down to culture. No cultured women would viciously fight men. They understand men and treat them with respect. Aggression is a sign of immaturity, low culture and an inability to communicate in a rational, coherent, mature way.

Why do you think asians are so smart?
Because they live in highly populated countries with few good universities and few opportunities for good, well-paying jobs. In the 1970's in Hong Kong there were only 2 good universities and the competition to get in was ming-blowing. When children didn't get the grades it condemned them to a mediocre career and poor salary. Some of them even committed suicide. Education, for them, is more...
Answer to:
Why in 2012, am I, and most other people, treated with far less respect by others, than my grandparents who became adults in the year 1935 ?
It is the breakdown of the class system and the explosion of 'rights' which has given people the feeling that they can do anything they want to anyone, anywhere. With the increase in affluence, the family structure has broken down together with the respect taught within families. People act for themselves alone without consideration for those around them. I was on a bus sightseeing in London...

With the Tea Party credited for Republican energy in the 2010 elections, evangelicals, typically a key Republican constituency, have been overshadowed. Difficult one. I cannot accept the argument that everything good is an act of God and everything bad (like children being molested and murdered and innocent people being killed in war) is as a result of human error or man's evil. If God is all-seeing and all-knowing then he should be all-protecting too.
