Answer to:
How bad does a Root Canal hurt? Or is it just uncomfortable? Regardless of needle for Novacaine.
It varies with the person, dentist, and situation. I'm a difficult case as my dentist says. I have very dense jaw muscle and bones, combined with a healthy blood flow (which washes away the Novocaine). For me, he uses a special Novocaine which better penetrates denser tissue. I have had a few root canals, and the best were uncomfortable. The worst...well never mind.

Is the new AB format really what the long time members wanted?
Just look at this poll (over 90%) - it is obviously not what long timers wanted! AB does need revenue to be viable. They will probably be able to generate much more with this new format from drawing in the new, younger crowd. It really won't hurt them if the backbone leaves.

Hi kirababe,
There are a number of factors involved. Typical floor loading is probably around 40 pounds per square foot (of course there is a built in safety factor). Assuming a 4' X 1.5' 75 gallon aquarium, that gives you 6 square feet. 6 X 40 = 240 pounds could be placed anywhere long term with no worry whatsoever. I'm not quite sure what you are asking. Do you mean if it broke up in flight? If it nose dived? Do you mean with the engines flamed out? As a generality, the three to one rule is used with most airliners. You would multiply 25 X 3 to get 75 (nautical miles). This would approximately allow you to descend, or coast with the throttles at idle from 75 miles out. A speed of 580 mph, of...

Why do commercial pilots wear military-inspired uniforms and have titles like "Captain?" Wouldn't they be just as competent if they wore t-shirts, leather jackets and sunglasses like Australian bush pilots?
Pretty much for the image of confidence with prestige thrown in. Airline training is somewhat similar to military training. It sounds funny, but it doesn't even feel "right" piloting an airliner while out of uniform. I had some reposition flights where we didn't have to wear uniforms as the airplane was empty. It felt funny for all of us to be in jeans and dress shirts...

If given the choice, would you ever go back to your teen years? Why?
Yes, most definitely. I would go to school for a much faster career than becoming an airline pilot - probably in the medical field. It would be nice to have a recession proof / mandatory retirement age proof job (raising retirement age five years for airline pilots has killed my whole career)!

In your opinion: What would cause the crew of a scheduled airliner to become so distracted as to overfly their destination by 150 miles and not know it?
I have thousands of hours doing such a job, so have just a bit more insight than most here. I would say one probably did fall asleep, and the other wasn't paying attention for a brief period. They were foolish to not use falling asleep as an excuse. It is not at all uncommon for air carriers to be out of radio contact for brief periods. I have many times assisted ATC in trying to...

If all animal abuse in the livestock and "medical" research fields stopped, by how many years would the average human lifespan increase?
One of the latest studies on vegetarian life-span increases suggests a four year improvement. Undeniably, a vegan diet further decreases the chance of heart attacks and strokes. The mode of operation in the medical field is to treat the disease, not prevent it in the first place. Over a period of time, I would think around five years longer for the average person.

There are many gold-diggers out there, and they tend to be more aggressive. Sadly, I say the 89 year old has better odds. Now if the sensitive guy would start a gradual process of getting into better shape, I would say it would be almost even.

Once in a while, I learn something interesting. Once in a while I am able to inform someone of something interesting, or even help someone to consider being more compassionate towards other sentient beings. I even just had a staunch omnivore admit the possibility that a vegetarian could be healthy, and that there is a chance what colleges currently teach about nutrition could have some truth...

How hard is it to live the life as a vegetarian?
It's not very difficult. It does become a hassle as far as reading ingredients. Omnivores have quite the devious minds, and enjoy putting things such as human hair and duck feathers in bread (innocently called the amino acid L-Cysteine), bugs in foods (red beetles for food coloring), etc.

Have you ever been hypnotized (or has somebody attempted to hynotize you)? - Was it for fun or function?
Hi Jadey,
Two attempts by two different hypnotists, and neither worked. One of them was a PhD psychologist I was flying around the country for shows.
If you don't want to be hypnotized, you won't be! Something in my subconscious must not have wanted me to go under. I also wouldn't want to make a fool of myself as everyone did in the shows. I think that is what prevented...

Are women or men better drivers? My insurance company thinks it’s women, do you agree?
Yes, in general I would say they are better drivers. As a simple example of one aspect, see if you can predict whether a driver is male or female by watching them parallel park. The down side for males is that they do tend to drive more aggressively, which more than negates the added safety from being a better driver.
In the past two weeks, if I had not been a defensive driver, I would...

If black-boxes are the only things that survive a plane crash, why don't they make airplanes out of the same material that they make black-boxes out of?
The plane would be far to heavy! Even if it was made to be as rugged as the orange colored black box, the passengers could not survive more g-force than they could right now. Survivability would actually decrease in g-force related deaths as a more resilient material would transfer life ending g-force instead of absorbing / deflecting it through deformation, causing an actual decrease in...

When I fly Jetblue accross the country the speed posted on the seatback of the seat in front of me states that our speed is about 450. This seems slow for a jet; are they just trying to save money on fuel?
A speed of 450 knots is 518 statute mph. At the altitudes they usually fly (32,000 - 38,000) that's about Mach .77 to .78 which is exactly where they should be. Many people don't realize that most of the newer airliners are actually slower than they used to be. The Boeing 727 I used to fly would leave them in the dust without even pushing it!
Keep in mind GPS gives speed over...

I have a cheap laptop with 1.6Ghz CPU and I was thinking of purchasing 4Gb RAM for replacing its 1Gb RAM. Can I do that or is it not recommended to get so much RAM while having that few CPU?
It would be highly doubtful you could take more than 2 Gb. If you are running Vista, I would say try to get 2 Gb. XP does well enough with 1 Gb. I wouldn't buy 2 x 2 Gb. because you will probably be wasting your money. RAM helps up to a point, but that slow CPU will end up being a bottle neck.

Is there a way to reverse receding gums?
Proper tooth care! Usually it is caused by a lack of brushing and flossing. Many people don't know that you are supposed to turn the brush at about a 30 degree angle so that the bristles try to go up inside the gum line in addition to brushing the tooth itself. In most cases, it is preventable, and the best time is upon early detection with a probe penetration depth checkup.

I have never had one rude to me personally, either in pilot uniform, or not. Probably part of the reason is that many old-timers have taken about a 35% pay cut!

A video of a sight that occurs hundreds of times a day at Kosher slaughterhouses. A cow had it throat slit, was dropped onto the floor, stood up, tried to get out of the pen, fell down, got up again struggling for life, fell down again, and got up again. Yep, Kosher is God's way alright! So sad how cruel humans are!

Usually I go for best value to cost and quality for everyday clothes, especially since I have been dealt a new economic status. They never made a '78 Vette with real quick steering. Most likely you are used to slow steering. There is an aftermarket kit that converts it to a faster ratio (could be called quick, but not real quick), and someone may have installed it. I believe the ratio is tagged, or could be looked up at the steering gear box based on the stamping.
I highly doubt anyone makes steering slower...

I think you meant 10 and 2. It is controversial these days with some saying 9 and 3, and others saying 8 and 4, or surprisingly even 7 and 5 . Airbags are part of the concern with 10 and 2 as your hands can theoretically be flung 100 mph at your face if you are in a collision, making you quite the heavy hitter.

Economic loss, inefficiency, cost per seat, and numerous sound plus sound barrier restrictions, not to mention environmental concerns. Not even close to enough! It's not going to tone the flab on the outside, or do much on the inside. I do 333 sit ups three or four times a week, and that is definitely not enough to get my abs. even close to where I would like them to be.

Oh, I forgot you are a veggie, that's probably why we are friends! I almost hate to ask as you sound squeamish like me, but out of curiosity, do you eat vegetarian cheese, or cheese made with veal calf intestine?

So I am a student, I took a year off but I am going back in the fall. Would it be smart to finance a new vehicle because my other one keeps having problems, or should I stick it out while I am going to school to fix the car I have?
It depends on what year, and model car you have, the total miles, and the types of problems you have been having. I would guess you have something like a Dodge, not a Honda or Toyota.
It is almost always better to buy a nice vehicle a few years old as someone else has taken the depreciation hit.

I have only talked to a handful of accountants, and maybe one in three enjoyed it. Most didn't make much money at all. I knew one who was working as a security guard a number of years ago as there wasn't much steady work. If you like that type of thing, I would use that as one of the main influences. I'm not sure how they are fairing with the current economy.

I accidentally deleted some very important photos from my Canon E0S 400D Digital camera without saving them anywhere else. Data Recovery software says it can only work if recognising it as 'mass storage' instead of a camera, how do I do that?
Just to mention a bit more about the card reader jerv had mentioned, they are usually around $10. You will have to remove your SD card(or whatever format it is) from your camera, put it into the card reader, and plug the card reader into a USB port. It will then come up as mass storage, and as others mentioned, you (hopefully) will be able to download them as long as you haven't...

I guess the least effort might be once in a year turning off a light bulb that you would normally leave on.

I find it too unsettling to even think about what they did. I'm not into it enough to know the degree of torture, etc., in order to be able to compare them. When I think about such things, I feel so bad for the victims, and surviving family members. I also think of how it could have been one of my family members. One of my front teeth is discolored & dead. I cannot afford to have it capped. Would an over the counter tooth whitener help? or would it make it even more obvious?
Did you have a root canal? If not, you are risking bone degeneration below the tooth. Whether or not you had one, a dead tooth will become brittle over time, and probably crack down the road.
Whitening strips may or may not work. Definitely worth a try.
Answer to:
How much does it cost in America to whiten your teeth? because im from england - and it's really expensive over here and every1 over in the usa has really white teeth!!
It is about $50 for highly rated whitening strips. You should be able to order them on-line, or through your dentist. If you want to know the name, let me know, and I will tell you. I didn't list it right away as pervert point builders like to flag such things as spam.

What are some inexpensive teeth whitening strips that work? Just got my braces off and would like to whiten my teeth a little. They could really use it... Any good brands of teeth whitening strips that are not that costly and work great? Thanks :)
Consumer Reports just tested them, and Crest Supreme came up as very good, and was called a clear winner. I think they run about $50 which is close to twice of the next best. Next was Listerine Quick Dissolving, and Crest Premium. I have personally used the Supreme strips, and they work quite well, definitely better than the Premium, and are worth the extra money!
Any whitening product...

An airplane "knows" how fast it is going through the air only. The speed over the ground can vary considerably. When I used to instruct, I would sometimes have students practice minimum controllable airspeed not far from a ski hill. On winter days, the winds aloft tend to be stronger. As an example, we could be doing 40 knots (46 mph) into the wind. Sometimes the wind was coming...

Like most others, I can't give you one good reason. Microsoft even has a downgrade available to go from Vista to XP for many customers!
XP is scheduled to be supported until 2014. Vista only until 2012 last I checked!
Wait a few years until most of the bugs are ironed out of Windows 7!
Answer to:
Can you give me a good enough reason to switch to Windows Vista right now?

Answer to:
Windows Vista or Windows XP?
XP will have a run a number of times longer than Vista's. Apparently, Microsoft agrees with most that XP is better. Microsoft even had a down-grade to go from Vista back to XP!
XP can run well on 1 GB of memory, Vista can run well on 2 GB...it's a resource hog.

Are fish stupid?
I had a Pengasius Catfish years ago that would only eat when I fed him. He refused to eat anything when I was gone five days every week, and my mom stopped by to feed him. When I would get home, he would swim end to end in the tank, come up to brush against my hand just like a dog or cat, splash me, and then once he got it out of his system, eat in his preferred manner - right out of my hand!

Some is, and some isn't. It depends on what is used to coagulate it. Cheese has an ingredient innocently called enzymes. The source of these enzymes is sometimes the stomach of a veal calf. Such cheese is most definitely NOT vegetarian. Other sources of the enzyme are microbial, and vegetable. These two sources allow the cheese to be vegetarian.

Would you ever buy an item off Ebay if the seller states :"No returns accepted", have you? If you don't receive it, under such circumstances, would Paypal not refund you?
That depends on what it is. I primarily would judge by the approval rating of the seller, and read many of his ratings. Always make sure it is insured unless it is very cheap. As long as you put Papal on a credit card, you have much more bargaining power. As you probably already know, EBay owns Paypal, so they aren't going to be the most objective.

The Civic Si would give you good mpg, a sporty feel, Honda life-span and reliability, plus cheaper insurance than the 3000gt. Wow, times have changed - 16 year olds used to get maybe a $1,000 car with rust!

A common pattern of an insecure control freak. It won't change without counseling. If he won't go to counseling, you better! You need to decide whether or not you want a chance for a happy life, and to be your own person. This happens to many women. Those that stay in the relationship without counseling are never happy.
