Answer to:
Do you consider homosexuality to be a sin/ wrongdoing?
Most, if not all, homosexuals are born "programmed", if we may say, with a strong tendency to preference the same sex, just as most, if not all, heterosexuals are born "programmed" with a strong tendency to preference the opposite sex. For those who believe in god: Are you saying god has created sinful creatures? The idea is ludicrous. And even sex preference by circumstance, choice or...

Why do young people feel they would rather die rather than get old? Recently a co-worker called me out on a minor error I made. I said, "Wait until you're my age." She responded, "God, I hope not! I'd rather be dead!" This seemed rather harsh.
Growing old is part of life, and if I am lucky, I'll also get to experience it. We start out frail, so I don't think being frail is a reason to wish an end to life. Extreme suffering (e.g., due to a painful illness) is a different thing altogether.
Personally, I like a balance of ages, and I feel old and young, frail as they might be, continuously contribute to my life in direct...

When you are looking at an old photograph of yourself, what is one thing you always notice?
An amazing fact: that person in the photograph it's actually me: so different, not only in looks but also in thinking, if I recall correctly, yet carrying a core maintained through the passage of time. And I wonder: all those other "me" that never made it, what became of them, where are they? Are they still dormant somewhere inside?

How far apart are your children??? i have a 14 year old boy and have recently been thinking it would be nice to have another child.
I have six kids that span from the late twenties to my youngest being 5. Two of them are adopted.
I don't think there is any sort of set rule about this. Some people want to "get it over with" (for whatever reason) and hence once their first "set" (whether one or more than one kid) reaches a certain age they decide to stop for good. Others feel that they would enjoy...

How do you make money on the Internet?
The same way you make money on anything else: with some ingenuity, some luck, and, most importantly: A LOT OF HARD WORK. Anybody who suggests the contrary is, with high probability, trying to dupe you.
The internet gives you the potential to reach many people. But in order to do so, you must provide something of value, or at least of perceived value, that will attract this people. That could...

Do you mourn the passing of Summer or do you celebrate the arrival of Autumn?
Both. Each summer I'm visited by, or visit myself, some family members scattered around the globe, some of which (like my three grown daughters) I love dearly. Thus, the passing of summer is also the passing of this dear company, possibly for another year, and hence I mourn the end of summer.
On the flip side, I love autumn, the foliage with its colors, the wind, the temperature, the...

How come today's leaders aren't on the front lines during a war, you know start a war fight the war.
That's the way it's always been, more or less: leaders fabricate wars to defend their own interest, fools go to battle to do the dirty work, to kill and get killed.
In the old times, contrary to folk tales and movies, a king lead his army only if absolutely necessary and mainly to impress his people, since being a good fighter was considered a key trait of character by many. But...

Who do you consider to be better educated. The British or the Americans?
It depends on how you define "educated". You may disagree with me, but in my view, the word evokes knowledge of the cultural icons of our society in particular and our world in general. Like some history, something about our music, our literature, our art, how did we get to where we are, what’s out there in the world and the universe, what characterizes each country and ethnic...

Do you feel honored on April Fools' Day?
A GREAT DAY IN THE HISTORY OF SLEEP
England was one of the most reluctant countries in accepting the Gregorian Calendar. So, by 1751, it was September 13 in Paris, Berlin and most other European cities, but only September 2 in London. Then the British government finally decided this could no longer go on, and put forth the “British Calendar Act of 1751.” That night, people in...

At the beginning of the fourth century, there were many battles for the throne of Rome, which had begun to divide. In order to rule, Constantine was forced to accept Christianity, the followers of Jesus Christ, who were growing larger...

APRIL FOOLS – THE SERIOUS EXPLANATION
Long ago, people in Europe used another calendar, called the Julian Calendar, after Julius Caesar, the Roman emperor who ordered its use. On this calendar, the first day of the year was around April 1. But calendars try to follow the way the earth goes around the sun, and although this one was not bad, it missed about 11½ minutes every...

Science aims at producing a "thesis" of an "hypothesis", and once the thesis has been produced, concurrence among the scientific community, or at least a quorum within the scientific community, that the thesis is correct. A lot of people i have met say they eat animals because they are dumb and not as intelligent as humans. Does that mean that we can also eat dumb and unintelligent humans? Morals?-but many human cultures eat our cousins the monkey/ape!
Eating habits started back in primitive times. Let's look at nature for a moment: animals do not eat members of their own species, with exceptions. The exceptions are few, well documented, and rare. Furthermore, people who have studied the behavior of predators in forests and jungles have discovered a sort of "code of ethics": predators classify (whether by instinct or passed on...

What has changed about the discipline of our children today to make it so difficult to do?
The increased "atomization" of families. In the old times, there were other adults participating in raising the kids, not as much as the parents, but involved to some degree or another (for example, grandparents, aunts and uncles). Today, as a result of many factors, families have become small, with a reduced number of participating adults, often busy, sometimes single parents, etc....

What is so wrong with homosexuality? Can anyone give me an explanation? I mean God would've never ever created the concept of it if it was bad. I mean God is the supreme ruler of the universe. How did he let homosexuality get by?
People and society define and constantly redefine their values, and declare things to be "right" or "wrong", including things that do not necessarily cause any damage to them or society. We must learn to look beyond the "here and now". We should strive for tolerance, understanding, and integration, over intolerance, hatred and segregation. Then society as a whole...

I've worked with and around kids a lot, and in my experience, a kid that masturbates in the open even after being guided not to, particularly a girl, has been sexually abused or molested at some point in her life. Try doing some "role play" with toys or dolls, showing what is acceptable behavior and what is not - e.g., the toy that hits gets shunted, other toys don't want to play with it; the one that gently pats or caresses gets kisses and all the other toys want to be their friends. Answer to:
Is 'time out' a good punishment for kids?
Yes, it is one of the most effective anger control methods. It gives kids a chance to cool down, and it gives parents a chance to calm down and reflect upon what has happened and how to follow up on it (like a talk with the kid, once everybody is calm, about whatever it is that was wrong). Many parents have a "5 minute silence" rule, where they tell the kid s/he will be able to come...

Yes, I own a cell phone and need it. Technology is "liberating" but also "enslaving", an interesting contradicting quality. The "need" comes with the times we are living in. 6000 years ago people lived in clans: children, elderly (not many made it to old age at that time), extended family, they were all close together. I guess there was no need for phones then. 30...

Trust your instincts. I think that, to some extent, it might depend on a person's beliefs. I see marriage as a 'contract' established by society and/or religion, and therefore not an essential component for sharing one's life with another person. Love, compatibility of characters, the desire to invest one's energy into a relationship, those are the types of things that...

It really depends on your beliefs. To me, love, the desire to share, the compatibility of characters, the desire to put one's energy into a relationship, are the type of things that really matter. I see marriage as a "contract" determined by society and/or religion. Couples can choose to enter or not to enter in such contract. From a purely social/legal point of view, it...

My male opinion: if you let me, you wanted it. That is an honest opinion.
But: Two months is not really a long time. You just tell him you want the relationship to evolve in other areas as well or else you'll stop. And you mean it.

You tell stories to children and see how they react. I published a book with 3 stories and a number of short stories in magazines and websites, and in 90% plus of the cases they were stories I had already told and had produced some level of excitement. But perhaps the most important thing is to awaken the child in you (we all have it there somewhere). And to sit down and just do it.

Why do couples move in with each other before marriage?
Marriage is a legal, ceremonial, public, family, and for some people, religious affair. Love for each other is an intimate affair, and is what really matters. A couple might decide to share their lives with or without marriage, before or after marriage. To each its own. When children are involved, however, there are some very practical considerations that favor the idea of tying the knot.

In England or Anglo-Saxon communities in the US and Canada, women don't give me the light of day, and hence I don't feel attractive. But French Canadian women look at me and have a friendly attitude. My conclusion: attractiveness is not an...

Do you find it hard to show affection?
I grew up in different countries, and can say that there is a lot of cultural background in the display of affection. For example, Brazilians hug and kiss children who are not their own, in school, at stores, in the park... and compliment, touch and kiss one another often. It is standard for French Canadians to touch and kiss across genders when arriving or leaving. Even in the US, it varies...

Lortab is considered dangerous during pregnancy, and should not be self-prescribed. A doctor can prescribe and control its use if absolutely required, which is generally not the case. And even then, it would be a good idea to get a second medical opinion.
Answer to:
Do you think men feel threatened by a young woman who is upfront on what she wants?
Why should they? However, many men do. It has to do with social expectations about behavior, which date back centuries. According to these, a man is expected to take the lead, so if a woman openly expresses her desires (which could be opening or closing doors), some men feel their role is beeing stolen.

When does life begin? At conception? At 24 weeks? At birth? At 40?
Life begins at conception, but "independent" life begins at birth. From conception to birth a life is sustained through another life, and hence, it is part of that other life.
The issue becomes complicated when we think about sustainability outside the mother. Medically, with our present knowledge and technological level, we cannot sustain a fetus with 5 months or less, but we...

Referring to adults (children are a different matter), that you can't expect to control what anybody else does. Yes. Unfortunately, it happens more often than one would hope. One of the cases I know touched me deeply, as he had been my best friend in college, with whom I had lost contact, and he was a person I admired for his intelligence, his ability to interpret music, and his cheerful mood. It's hard to imagine what's going on inside people sometimes.

I have a 19 year old daughter, freshman year in college. She speaks disrespectful and thinks since she is in college she does not have to answer to us nor ask if she can go somewhere for the weekend. Sometimes she doesn't answer when I call. What to do
One possible approach to try is this: take two pieces of paper; in one, ask her to fill in what she expects of you; on the other, you will fill in what you expect of her. Do this in as friendly, non-confrontative manner as you can. Then, before reading each other's part, make a commitment with yourself and each other to be open minded about what you're going to read.

Have you tried giving her responsibilities? Like doing her own laundry, helping you around the house? Some kids react positively when they feel useful. The type of discipline suggested by Stmark seems a good approach, too. A balance of discipline and expressed love.
But in the back of your mind, try to see if there is something going on in her life that might be triggering her behavior. It...

Do we lie to those who matter and tell the truth to those who don't because doing so is of little consequence?
No. I am sincere with those who matter, but I don't feel obliged to those who don't. Is not that I go around lying to the world, either; but when it comes to deep things about myself, I don't feel any obligation to disclose them to a person on a store I might never see again, or to an inconsequential acquaintance. I think teenagers might do what you suggest when the...

What would you say distinguishes an adolescent of today from one of about 40 years ago?
40 years ago means 1968, so say late sixties. The Vietnam war was raging on, the draft was on, the US and the Soviet Union were in a crazy arms race many people thought would end in a devastating war. JFK shot, Martin Luther King shot, Bobby Kennedy shot. Che Guevara. French students' riots. Richard Nixon. Dictatorships all over the place. And parents trying to instill a post-depression,...

You can't expect your heart to flip over from love to hate just like that. Give it some time to heal. The hair, you throw out (no need to make a big deal out of it). The rest, really depends on the circumstances. In a restaurant, one might point it out to the waiter. But any sort of statistical analysis requires numbers, regardless of who (activists, policy makers, instructors, etc.) makes the analysis. Why would someone NOT want kids?
I agree with Floater: kids are not for every one. Some folks have factual reasons not to want them: age, health issues, potential genetic transmission of illnesses, fear of reproducing their own childhood dramas, etc. Others just don't feel "the call". I would add: there is nothing wrong with deciding not to have kids, we shouldn't attach a moral judgement to it.

My wife and I are divided - is slapping your child (open faced palmed) across the face child abuse?
Forget about "child" for a moment and just consider the action. Is it OK for your wife to slap you in the face if she doesn't like what you've done? For you to slap her? Now add the "child" part of the equation: the "receiving" end is smaller, less conscious of good and bad, and less able to defend. Does that make it OK? Or worst?

Why do parents treat their teenage daughters more strictly than their sons?
For two reasons, both social in nature: (1) Society puts more restrictions upon women, and (2) early pregnancy is deemed to be a problem of the girl's family and not a problem of both the girl's and the boy's family.
If you question the first reason, think about this: How many parents tell their daughters: "go have lots of boys now that you're young and...

Do you agree with the act of parents spanking their children?
If so, do you think there should be a cut off age as to when the spanking should stop?
My theory on spanking is this: It is only potentially useful when applicable to TODDLERS, if done immediately after the "crime" (10 seconds later is too late), and if it causes no (or very small, marginal) physical pain. The purpose is to let the kid know his/her action is not admissible and causes an immediate repudiation by parents, at an age where reasoning is almost absent and...

ROMANCE: "Love in the Time of Cholera" by Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez (Nobel Prize in 1982, considered by some the best author that is still alive). - Romance at his best in the magic realism style prevalent among many Latin American authors today, and which was invented by this author. If you want to start with a smaller book by this author, try "Love and Other...

Do you accept the argument that the so-called gift of free will is the cause of evil?
In totalitarian societies, the people have to do pretty much what the government tells them to do (in the socio-political arena). In those cases, the lack of free will actually causes more evil. Extrapolating, if there was no free will, then God would be evil.

How many times does your partner make you "reach the sky" on a given trip? I mean, see colors and shout to the wind? -- Common ladies, you know what I mean. I don't want to say it too bluntly. Just curious what is happening with everyone else...
Alysis: I'm curious about answers to your question, but nobody seems to care about providing a response. Maybe you should ask it more directly. Just a thought.

I'm only 15 and I'm attempting to write a novel. I've actually gotten pretty far with it, but I'm not too confident about it, and I haven't even written any short stories. Am I kidding myself?
Send me 3 pages (any) and I'll let you know. No kidding.
Answer to:
Do you think it is the man or woman's responsibility to bring the condoms when getting intimate?
Both, evidently. Reasons many, all powerful. Be responsible: what else is there to say?
Answer to:
Do you have a television in your bedroom? How often do you watch it?
No, for goodness sake! -- The tube drug, the SOMA on your bedroom, aaarg!!!
I don't watch TV on a daily basis. My equipment (used for selected videos) is kept without reception. I think TV is a terrible drug, one that keeps people from living a fuller life. I like to read, to write, to chat or email with friends, to garden, to challenge my kids on various things... I have so many...

What day of the month do you set aside to pay your bills? Or do you just pay them as they come in?
I review the payment, in the context of my monthly budget, once a week (sounds too often, but is really not if done online). But the actual payments are scheduled, generally online, as drafts against my checking account (or its corresponding charge card). I hate dealing with payment through envelopes: too much paper, publicity, forgotten dates...

If a question can not be answered, is it even worth asking?
Absolutely. Many surprisingly interesting discoveries in life occur on our way to find some answer, even if we never find it. My sister confessed this to me: "I have enjoyed the intellectual, emotional and spiritual trips much more than the arrivals... I don't understand why folks get so stuck on finding answers to everything". (She had two weeks max. to live at the time, as...

Serious question. I'm a 13 year old girl. Give me the "i wish i would have known that earlier" advice so i can take it in now. thanks.
There so many things that can be said, but I think it is important to leave kids room to make some mistakes and learn and grow from them. I don't believe life is an equation or a recipe, we each find our own paths. I'll say just a couple of things.
(1) Read about safe sex and pregnancy prevention. If you're old enough to get pregnant, you are old enough to learn how to...

My daughter (16) is growing much closer to her boyfriend (16). They've been going together for about 2 months & he's over every day. I really like the kid. How long realistically do teens go out before there's more going on than I would like there to be?
Lisa... Hmmm... Sixteen... How can I say this to you... Whatever was bound to happen, it has already happened! With high probability, that is. I'm not teasing. I'm father of six, five of them girls. The important thing is to keep the communication and understanding channels open. And if you haven't had that prevention talk you've been meaning to have with her, to avoid...

Answer to:
What is the meaning of life?
Why should life have a meaning?
It is a miracle (regardless of whatever spiritual creed one might have). It is like a film where we write the script as we watch it. Our inquisitiveness wants to find it a purpose, but life itself doesn’t need one. If one shall, we each give it our own. Aldous Huxley jokingly says, in his book <The Island>: “We think that we are a very...

As one gets older, one gets exposed to more and more opposing ideas, and in order to continue to function, one must favour one idea over the other. What is this is called: selling-out, compromising, or hypocrisy?
I don't see it as selling-out, compromising or hypocrisy. I think is part of defining one's own path in life. But it is important to respect someone else's path, as well, and to keep an open mind. As young, we change ideas more rapidly. Once older, we should not stop changing, but a change is bound to be over a period of time, as we have learned in the process of living and have...
