Showing less interest won't give him "the idea" it will leaving him wondering why your snobbing him. If your really friends with this guy, and wish to remain friends just be honest with him, encourage him, not the opposite! Because that will worsen the problem.

Is it more difficult trying to learn a new language when you are over 40 years old than if you were much younger?

Without a doubt, as you get older you brain takes longer to take in the same amount of information so learning a language at a younger age would be easier. It doesn't mean its impossible to learn at 40, just more challenging.

Yes it is, I skip it too although I shouldn't. Statistics say that you are more likely to over eat later in the day if you miss breakfast.
