You do not need to replace your whole tower to replace the DVD drive. You just need to buy an internal drive.
As far as the slo-mo goes, I can't tell you what the problem is. Part of the problem could be the type of bus your drive is using. USB is slower than FireWire, especially if it's not USB 2.0. As a rule, use external drives only as a last resort.

It's not about forgetting. It's more about coming to terms with it. It happened, you didn't cause it, it doesn't make you damaged, and shame on them for doing that to a defenseless child. Crying about it helps, too. Some people find mourning the child that they were that was lost due to this abuse helps, too.
