Is anyone else rather disquieted by the "Yes on 8" ads that AnswerBag has chosen to accept? Where are the "No on 8" ads as well for fairness? It tempts me to propose a boycott. [CA proposition on LGBT marriage]
For the record, all of our ads run through ad networks. We don't "accept" ads from any particular advertiser nor do we even talk directly to any of our advertisers - we just run whatever ads the ad network gives us. If "No on 8" wants to run ads here, they're perfectly welcome.

Do you think it would be a good idea to be able to attach a video to a question? Instead of asking a question and then answering their own question with the video. I notice that there are "Video answers" but no video questions. Why is that?
Great idea, and it's actually now possible! Just include the EMBED code for the video (preferably Youtube) when you ask your question in the designated box, and it'll show up next to your question. Enjoy!

No, we don't. We want people to get answers to their questions, no matter how long it takes, so we leave those accounts open indefinitely. It's no fun to create another account on a site you've already registered for, so we figured that would be bad. :)

I just checked our logs, and you received no penalty for "posting links to rejected questions" or any reason that sounded remotely like that. Are you sure this was the reason?

If i want to live day to day (basically be poor) is there really a point to school? How do i explain this to my mom?
The way I see it, there's being "poor" and there's being "hungry". While being poor isn't necessarily a bad thing, being hungry is, particularly if you ever have kids to feed. If you're going to be poor, you need to expect to be employed your entire life (and not to retire), or you're going to go from just poor to hungry/homeless. A good education...

You got one negative 5 on Jan 5, one on Jan 4, and one on Jan 2, so I'd say it isn't a pattern of harassment. Is 13 the minimum age requirement for someone to have an Answerbag account? What are the ramifications for a user who has confirmed that they are under the legal age?

We are not encouraging the "Top Troll" list, and we prefer not to have links to it from Answerbag lest it be seen as endorsed by us. The reason is that the vast majority of people killed in a homicide are not killed by serial killers. As scary as they are, your odds of being killed by a serial killer are extremely low. You're much more likely to be killed in the process of an armed robbery or carjacking, for instance.

For a bit more detail, I went to Physlink:
As your finger travels around the glass it sticks and slides at different points. Each stop and start causes the glass to vibrate. Unless I misunderstand the question, as long as the ball was caught, it doesn't matter if the ball was called fair or foul by the umpire, or even where it was going to land. If the fielder catches the ball (without doing something extreme like climbing over the fence), it should always be an out.

Does answerbag promote free speech? If so, why can't I ask any question I want without fear of it being rejected?
We try to be pretty liberal with the questions we allow. We try to only reject question that are unintelligible, offensive, spam, or duplicates of existing questions. We will occasionally reject questions that have become outdated as well.

Why was my question rejected when it was a serious question. vodka really effects me more than any other beer
The original question was "Does vodka make anyone loopy when they drink it." I believe the question was rejected because *everyone* gets loopy when they drink (enough) alcohol, so it's like asking "Do you get full when you eat food?"

The phrase "You're a dips***" has been deemed "acceptable" by Answerbag, according to an email reply I received regarding an unapproved moderation. Your thoughts?
In the context of a question where the word is essential to the meaning of the question, we may be more lenient with offensive language. We will, however, start using asterisks to get the point across without actually using the offensive word. Just as we have done with this question.

I would, actually. I have done train trips now in Canada and in Mexico. The one in Mexico was great because we'd stop at each town along the line (The Chepe) and spend a night or two there, and just hop on the train again the next day (it came through daily.) How do I choose the right category for my question?
The most important thing to consider is if your question is social or informational. A social question is one that is intended to create discussion or to let people give creative answers, but informational questions help people understand something or offer useful information about a topic.
Some examples of social questions are:

Is there really a place for the Newbie on Answerbag? I have been looking around, and there seem to be dedicated questions to slanderising the new people. Is this to be expected?
There is always a place here for newbies. The slander you speak of is generally aimed at people who come on and start asking pointless or incomprehensible questions. I recommend paying some attention to spelling, grammar, and to writing a question that is interesting and ideally helpful for the community. If you do these things, you will be welcomed to the community whole-heartedly!

Why does the word s-e-x or s-e-x-u-a-l in your question keep it off of the front page? I cannot say, "How do I tell the s-e-x of my gerbil?" or "How do I know if a relationship is purely s-e-x-u-a-l." Why has this been put into the list of "taboo" words?
Well, you can probably imagine some of the questions that would show up on the homepage without some filters. We were getting frequent complaints from our community, so we now sanitize the homepage to some extent. Those questions still show up everywhere else, including New Arrivals!

If a question gets enough negative ratings is it removed?

Answer to:
When AB was first made, what was its purpose [Recreation, Gain knowledge, both, other]?
It was first made as an attempt to help archive human knowledge and experience. So much great, invaluable information gets shared on the 'net, but much of it gets lost in old FAQs or buried in message boards, so I wanted to build a single repository for all that great stuff.
As Alaskacatalog notes, yes, I figured it would make money, but you can only make money with a product that...

Why must everything be a struggle with set backs, and pain? Can't anyone just have things easy, just once?
If life didn't have struggles, we wouldn't learn and grow stronger. Character is built by dealing with setbacks and conflicts, and using those experiences to improve your life and your ability to cope in the future. If life were "happy" all the time, we wouldn't be able to deal with setbacks at all.

Why did Answerbag decide to give us ranks?
The primary reason is to recognize the top contributors. We have a lot of people on AB who give questions and answers of varying quality, so we wanted to make sure that we gave credit to the people who the community think are giving great contributions. It's important that our points and levels system is solely based on points that are given by other users, and not just for various...

I believe what you're looking for is the "share" tab on the category pages. By default, it's set to the "learn" tab so the questions are sorted by rating. :)

I love metal, but not screaming that sounds painful. What I love about Fiath No More is their theatrical, playful yet dark quality, clear projecting vocals, and sudden but flowing music narrative shifts. What bands akin to Faith No More might I enjoy?
I was a big FNM fan as well, but moved on to Soundgarden and Tool, although neither is very "playful" most of the time. Or, if you're intent on the playful part, I'd try Primus.

What is the Level Meter on Answerbag?
The Level Meter shows how close you are to earning your next level! As you earn points, the Meter fills up, and when it gets to the top, your level will increase. To see how many points you need to earn still, just put your mouse over the Level Meter for a second, and a message should pop up telling you how many points you need.

The question edit allotment time was 15 minutes before the version upgrade. Why is it 5 minutes now? Or is this just a typo?
The reason is that we saw some people asking questions, waiting for an answer, and then editing their question to mean something different so the answers were no longer meaningful. Hopefully the new time limit will keep this from happening.

I am not a fan of hunting and wouldn't do it myself, but I have nothing against people who do it for the purposes of eating or other productive uses of the animals they kill. It is no different than fishing. I don't quite understand, however, the practice of stuffing and mounting the dead animal.

Why did AB take a Q I submitted, rewrite it, and then repost it under my own name without notification, or my authorization? Is it common practice of AB to rewrite members Q's and repost them without their knowledge or permission?
On the question entry page, we clearly state "We may edit your question for clarity or categorization." We try not to do this, but in events where it's necessary so that other users can easily understand the question and give answers that address the intent of the question, we do sometimes make the necesary edits.

Well, if you assume the car is going at a constant speed during that 7.17 seconds, you have 1.35 meters per 7.17 seconds, or .18 meters per second. This would also translate to .68 kilometers per hour, or 0.4 miles per hour. If the car changed speed at all during that time, it's top speed will be higher than this. Hope this helps!

Why can't have any more positive ratings from some users? Have I hit my lifetime quota of atta-girls? Please sir may I have some more?
The limits that we have prevent people from rating others too positively or too negatively, so one user can't just keep rating another user until their rank skyrockets or drops like a stone.
There are 2 time limits imposed - there is a short-term limit that keeps people from giving a ton of ratings to one person all at once, and there's a long-term limit that keeps people from strategically...

Answer to:
According to Alexa, Answerbag's traffic spikes up and down like a roller coaster. Why is this?
Well, Alexa's methodology prevents it from keeping very accurate records. So, their data, particularly for relatively small sites like Answerbag (compared to the likes of a Yahoo or something), the data tends to spike up and down a lot. Rest assured, our traffic pattern doesn't actually look like that.

How many submissions (answers, questions, terms and definitions) do you get per day, on average?
This changes all the time, so it's hard to give you a number. Recently, we've been getting around 150-200 questions and 300-350 answers. Terms and Definitions are pretty spotty - most people go for the bright lights of Q&A. :)

Why are we only allowed 15 minutes to edit/delete our comments to answers?
Because we'd rather not have you changing your question while other people are trying to answer it! So take your time when writing the question, and try to get it right the first time (or shortly thereafter!)
Answer to:
Why are we only allowed 15 minutes to edit/delete our comments to answers?
Because people are not perfect. At least, most people aren't. Most of us make a typo once in a while, or re-think what we said and we want to fix it, so AB allows editing of comments briefly after you post, in case you change you mind right after submitted. But, we don't want people constantly changing their comments because it gets hard for other people on the site to follow what's going...

Answer to:
Why is AB planning on imposing limits to the amount of questions submitted per day? How many questions per day will be allowed?
We are considering it because we would like to avoid situations where a user can "dominate" the site by posting so many questions that everyone else's questions get pushed down and therefore are less likely to get answers. We want the site to be welcoming and useful for anyone, not just the one user who decides to try to flood it. Flooding has been prevented for years in chat rooms...

Answers say who submitted them, and when. Why don't questions include the same information?
Why we don't show a date:
It doesn't matter, really. We make every attempt to make sure that our questions are not time-dependent, so they will be valid at any time.
Why we don't show who submitted the question:
It allows people to answer their own questions without it looking odd. People may discover that one of our FAQs is missing a question, and then, because they...

Answer to:
Why do I never see ratings below 50% even if every rater has rated the answer incorrect?
Here's how ratings work:
A rating of "useful" receives a 100%
A rating of "somewhat useful" receives a 75%
A rating of "incorrect" receives a 50%
A rating of "offensive/spam" receives a 0%
Because we follow an academic grading scale, we scaled our percentages to match, so an excellent rating is a 100% and a "fail" is a 50%, so...

Can we please have more than 255 characters to ask a question?
Here's the deal: Answerbag is all about "frequently-asked" questions. Most frequently asked questions are pretty short - if I let the questions get too long, they'll be very hard to browse, and we'll end up with people telling their life stories just to ask simple questions. So, we limit the question to encourage people to be concise and to the point. We may lose...

A friend of mine who uses an online dating service told me he saw my girlfriend of one month on there. I am deeply hurt by this, yet she seems very into me. What possible explanations can there be for this?
Perhaps she posted the listing before you guys got together and didn't remember to take it down? It's easy to forget that those postings are up there. : ) I wouldn't worry about it too much at this point. Give it some time, and then if it's still there, you can mention it to her - at that point you should expect her to take it down.

This sort of damage, as well as any other vandalism, should be covered under the "comphrehensive" part of your insurance. The deductible you have specified for your comprehensive insurance will apply, so you will need to pay that amount, but the insurance company should pay the rest.

How can I upgrade a Kodak Snapshot Photo Scanner 1 to Windows XP from Windows 95?
I am not familiar with this particular scanner, but the general process is to get Windows XP "drivers" from Kodak. A driver is a piece of software that you can usually download, and it tells the computer how to talk to the scanner. Kodak should provide one that works, so please refer to their website or their tech support number.

If my boss' company is sold and they give me severance pay, can he expect me to work durning the time I would collect my severance without any additional pay?
No, certainly not. If you are being asked to continue working, the money you receive is salary, not severance. Severance pay means they have "severed" their connection with you, you are no longer working for them, and they are paying you to be nice, typically because they laid you off on short notice.

Believe it or not, this is the normal operation of the PS2. If you don't want to use the power switch on the back, you can leave it turned on, and then hold down the reset button to put the PS2 in "sleep" mode, while you aren't using it. By doing this, you won't have to reach behind the unit to turn it off and on.

How can I make saddle pack batteries for my R/C car? I can not seem to get the solder to stick to the batteries.
Two big things to check here:
1. Make sure you are using a high-wattage soldering iron. I'd recommend at least 80 Watts, with 100 or more being preferable. Batteries are very sensitive and they're hard to warm up, so a very hot soldering iron will heat them up faster and allow you to solder faster, thereby minimizing the potential of damage by overheating.
2. Make sure you...

The first step I'd recommend is using a polish. Meguiar's makes a product called Clear Coat Body Scrub Paint Cleaner - it's a moderately abrasive polish, and it should help get any remaining "pollution" out of your paint and restore its natural shine.

Answer to:
What is an epee?
A sword that is similar to a foil, but less flexible. A stabbing weapon.
Answer to:
What is a foil?
A sword that is long, narrow, and flexible mostly in the vertical direction, if you are holding it. Practice foils will have a rubber tip on the end, but competition (electric) foils will not - they will have a small spring-loaded metal tip that determines if you hit someone hard enough to score a touch. These tips are not sharp, and will not break the flesh. Foils are intended for stabbing,...
Answer to:
What is a parry?
To block or deflect in incoming thrust.
Answer to:
What is right of way?
Some varieties of fencing have a concept called "right-of-way." This means that whichever fencer begins an attack first has the right of way - if that fencer scores a touch, whether or not the other fencer scores a touch, the fencer with right-of-way gets the point. The defender must parry or dodge the initial attack in order to gain the right-of-way and score the point.
Answer to:
What is a touch?
A point scored.
Answer to:
Do the swords ever break?
Yes, they do, and this is usually the only time the sport is dangerous. A hard thrust can break an old, brittle blade, leaving a sharp point.
When this happens, play stops immediately, and the fencer must use another sword.

Answer to:
Why do fencers wear metal vests?
Metallic vests are for competition. You may notice that the fencer will also have a cable tied to the back of their vest.
These vests are used to help keep score. In foil competition, the torso is the only valid target, so a metallic vest is worn over the torso. When a touch on the vest is scored by the opponent, a circuit is opened (or closed, I forget) and that signals the electronic...
Answer to:
Why do fencers hold their free hand up in the air?
Primarily to keep it safe! It's no fun being stabbed in the hand.
Also, in competitive foil fencing, one can be given a penalty for blocking their body with their free hand. The hand is not a valid target, so if the hand is used to block the torso (which is a valid target), it is a penalty.
Some fencers will just let their free hand hang down, but it should always be held out...

The three primary weapon types are foil, epee, and sabre (or saber).

Transactions help you make sure your data is consistent. They do this by allowing you to group commands that are being sent to the database. If any command within the group fails, they are all "rolled back," meaning that the database will act like none of the commands ever happened.
This could be useful if, for instance, you were updating a bank account transfer record. If a...

How often should I wax my car, and when?
The rule that I've read is to wax the car whenever you wash it AND the water beads that form on it are larger than the size of a quarter. Wax should make water roll right off your paint, so if there are large beads of water forming, it's time to wax again.
Try this: after waxing, wash your car with car wash soap. Then, to rinse, do not spray the car down - place the hose above...

Answer to:
What is a boost?
Amount of pressure, above normal atmospheric pressure (1 bar/14psi), that is being fed into your engine by a turbocharger or supercharger.
Answer to:
What does a turbocharger do?
A turbocharger increases your car's horsepower by forcing more air into the engine. More air gives you more oxygen to combust, therefore giving you a stronger explosion in the cylinder, and more power.
Turbochargers use the force of the engine's exhaust gases to spin a turbine which, in turn, forces cool air into the intake.
| 2 people like this
Answer to:
What does a supercharger do?
A supercharger forces more air into the engine's intake, giving you more power, just like a turbocharger. The difference is that the supercharger is "always on" - it is driven by the engine's crankshaft, so whenever the engine is turning, the supercharger is forcing air into the engine, creating "boost."
