Soak your hands in some warm water mixed with dish soap for a few minutes. Then take a pumice stone and give yourself a good scrub. If it doesn't work the first time do it again. Eventually you will be garlic-free!

I think it may have to do with the fact that if you are subconsciously exposed to something for so long you become desensitized to it. Dramatic acts of violence are shown on screen more often than anything beyond the suggestion of having sex (seeing two people, one on top of the other, on a bed...
