I received this work, penned by Maya Angelou, in an email earlier today. The woman who sent it to me is one of the wittiest, strongest, loveliest women I have ever had the pleasure of befriending anywhere. She has devoted countless hours holding councel on AB, helping those who have lost thier way. To me, she is thier beacon when those who loved them let them down, illuminating thier path with her light so that they could find their way back home once more. When I grow up I want to be just like her. This is dedicated to the strong women of Answerbag, and to those of you who do not yet realize you are strong. You know who you are. YOU may not be convinced of your strength, but we, the ladies of Answerbag, ARE. You have come to us sometimes beaten, often bruised, believing nothing you do will ever be good enough, because you've been told that repeatedy. Many of you have come to Answerbag with mortal wounds, thoroughly convinced of your own worthlessness. But you are NOT worthless. You were not put on this earth to live like this. No one was. For those things you have experienced, you have earned the right to weep. But after you have finished, it is time to gather your dignity......and move on. In honor of my friend. Wherever she may stand at any moment in her life, may she forever stand in her own glori. A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ... enough money within her control to move out and rent a place of her own, even if she never wants to or needs to... something perfect to wear if the employer, or date of her dreams wants to see her in an hour... A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .. a youth she's content to leave behind.... a past juicy enough that she's looking forward to retelling it in her old age.... a set of screwdrivers, a cordless drill, and a black lace bra... one friend who always makes her laugh... and one who lets her cry... A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ....... a good piece of furniture not previously owned by anyone else in her family... eight matching plates, wine glasses with stems, and a recipe for a meal, that will make her guests feel honored... A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE .. a feeling of control over her destiny... how to fall in love without losing herself.. EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW... how to quit a job, break up with a lover, and confront a friend without; ruining the friendship.... EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW.... when to try harder... and WHEN TO WALK AWAY... EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW... that she can't change the length of her calves, the width of her hips, or the nature of her parents.. that her childhood may not have been perfect...but it's over... EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW... what she would and wouldn't do for love or more... how to live alone... even if she doesn't like it... EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW.. . whom she can trust, whom she can't, and why she shouldn't take it personally... EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW... where to go... be it to her best friend's kitchen table.. or a charming Inn in the woods... when her soul needs soothing... EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW... I have never used a babysitter in all my years parenting. The girls go where I go, period. I have instilled in them love and respect for all critters great and small, especially themselves. They don't act out in public and they don't whine when inevitable "orders" are given. They practice thier manners in public and I can't tell you how delighted people are when my daughters show up somewhere. Kudos are given out as swiftly as time outs, but much more often. Hugs and direct eye contact are a staple of daily life as much as any nutrient. I love my girls, so I teach them thier social graces. I got married late in life. I was 36. We all love to do outside things whenever possible. We even catch various critters (snakes, bugs, bats, lizards, etc), observe them, then release them back where we got them. I had a real rough time growing up at the hands of my mother who abused me mercilessly in every way you can imagine. Been there, done that. It damn near ruined me permanently. If not for all the human angels God sent me, I would have been dead many, many times over. I am eternally grateful to every one of them. Many people gave to me, and some gave all they had. Now, it is my turn to give back. That does not mean that I have no personal work left to do, so I will not stop trying every day to be a better person. It simply means that I reached a mental level that requires me to be responsible now about paying forward what others have given me. I have been told very clearly by my higher power that my life is to be lived in service to others, and I take that very seriously. But I am no guru. I have to struggle for things just like everybody else does. Maybe I was a total bitch in a former life. Who knows? I DO love to have fun, and I love to joke around despite the heaviness of what I just told you. I am very introspective, a character trait that has paid off well for me. One last thing - I have memory problems due to the abuse I suffered. I have brain damage in the part of my brain that stores memory, with a few other damaged brain areas thrown in for good measure. So please don't feel badly if I forget part of a conversation, or a secret you told me, or things like that. If I could change it I would. |
