Is there any music that can make you cry? Or feel a strong emotional attachment too?
I find that the music of Honegger has a very direct emotional effect. I always get tears in my eyes when, in the last movement of the 2nd Symphony, which is written only for strings, the music emerges from despair and climaxes in the last movement with a solo trumpet playing the tune along with the strings. A wonderful moment. And in Joan of Arc at the Stake the emotional intensity at the...

Is it "yielded by" or "yielded from"?
The expression 'is yielded' is somewhat unidiomatic. If you have to use such an ungainly expression, they it would have to be 'yielded by'. 'To yield' means 'to give' or 'to bear', each of which would take 'by'.

I've been called a troll, a child molester and a burglar, and have been told that I am destined to burn in hell. To be fair, one of the people who called me one of those subsequently apologised, and that apology had more of an effect on me than the original insult.

After 13 years, we met again, we talked, hugged and kissed. Just once and that's all! But I'm feeling so guilty now especially that we still have communication eventhough he is so far away. He calls at least once a week. Is it bad? Is it so unfair? We both have families. Cutting all means of communication between us is the best thing to do? Or we can still on hold on to what we call friendship? Is it impossible for us to be friends? Please advise... I need advice... Please....

Should be a full stop (there is nothing wrong with verbless sentences in most types of English) or a colon. You could get away with a semi colon. But as you really need a colon after the word 'question', you'd probably be wiser to use a full stop. "None taken. To answer your question: no, you use a crucifix."

The problem is, the wings would have to be so large, and would require an enormous amount of force to flap them, that the human body would have to be modified to be able to do it. This would mean a large amount of muscle mass, which, in turn, would increase the weight and therefore also the size of the wings.
I would imagine there would come a point at which it would be completely impossible...

If you saw a young child wandering around a department store alone, you help them find their parents?
Not nowadays. I would fear that I would be accused of abduction. How sad it is that hysteria over child molestation has led to this situation! When I was a child adults were an important part of my world - some were friendly, some were not, but they were always part of my life, and I frequently interacted with them. Now, it seems that most children go through their childhood without any...

Some people are born to be evil - True or false?
I believe that a large proportion of people are actually born evil, and only refrain from doing evil because of the consequences they know would follow. When those consequences are not there, the evil comes out. Look at the ordinary Germans who became concentration camp guards and Gestapo members. Look at the ordinary Russians who became part of the secret police, and those who reported on...
Answer to:
Why are blimps not more widely used carrying people to and fro?
Theoretically they would be a great means of transport. Instead of sitting in an aluminum tube breathing stale air for eight hours, you could fly in comfort from London to New York in four or five days. Also, airships would be great for moving freight - instead of burning fuel just to get your craft to stay in the air, in an airship the fuel is just used to move from one place to another. ...

Women are highly skilled at social clues. Many years ago I went to a dinner party with my wife, and as far as I was concerned had a simple, pleasant evening. I asked her what she thought of it, and she said: "It was ok, apart from all the tensions." My response was "Huh?", and she then went on to explain about the tensions between couple A and B and couple C and D. I dismissed this as...

The implication that the right is analytical and the left is emotional indicates that the 'study' on which this was based was motivated politically from the start. I would say that it is fluent, but slightly unidiomatic. An English person would be able to tell it was written by someone for whom English was not a first language. What would be pitch perfect?
Being able to identify any note played on any instrument.
It's not really a desirable quality - it tends to go along with a high degree of pitch discrimination, and I have heard that music can sound unpleasant to someone with perfect pitch, because they are conscious of all the errors of intonation. Whether that's true or not I don't really know, but it's what I have been told.

Are the sentences "I go to NY every day afternoon. Are you in NY then?" incorrect? Must the word then be used in the past form?
No, you don't have to match the tense because the first sentence is talking about a habitual action that is not tied to time. But the sentences as you have written them are ambiguous, and 'every day afternoon' is unidiomatic. This would be better: "I go to NY every afternoon. Are you in NY at that time of day?"

Does saving someone who would have made the gene pool stronger by dying, make mankind weaker?
No one improves the gene pool by dying.
And to take the matter further, what do you mean by 'weaker'? Are you defining a characteristic which you feel is detrimental to mankind? If so, then you will need a definition the size of a book, rather than a single word. In neolithic times, Einstein might have been regarded as 'weaker' by members of his tribe. To understand what is and what is a...

Have the words ever fallen off a piece of paper in your pocket?
Once, when I travelled to the US, I discovered that the book I was reading was shedding all the superfluous 'u's during the flight, so that words like 'colour' were becoming 'colo r'. It was really embarrassing - I looked as though I had really bad dandruff. In the end I brushed them all onto the floor, and hoped that no one noticed. The only person who did was a rather snotty flight...

Do you think there is ever a good reason for parents to read their son's or daughter's private diary? If so, what might that reason be?
I am amazed that so many people in this thread seem to think it's ok to spy on their children. The only reason for doing such a thing would be if you felt the child was in real danger, and it was necessary to check on their movements or what they had been doing. Not something that most parents would ever need to do.

Yes, I am old enough to remember the monochrome world, before they invented colour. Traffic lights were a problem, but apart from that we managed ok. I tore my achilles tendon and did a lot of other damage to my leg. They told me I might have a permanent limp, and I was limping for about two years after the accident. But things improved, and within a few years the leg was completely...

which tree or bush is your favorite?
The Cedar of Lebanon is a lovely tree. But I have a ginkgo biloba, and I am very fond of that. It has butterfly-shaped leaves that are green in the summer, and turn an iridescent yellow for a few days in the autumn. I've tried photographing it for several years running, but I've never managed to capture that yellow without distorting the colour balance.

While the confusion between 'less' and 'fewer' drives me insane with irritation, I don't agree with some of the things said on this site. In programming, 'less than' is quite correct. It is referring to an abstract quantity rather than a number of something. It is contrasted with 'greater than' rather than 'more than'. It is less in the context of a 'greater or lesser' quantity.

When people are taking thousands of photographs on digital cameras and displaying them online; when people are blogging and doing their best to write creatively; when musicians are creating computerized works; when painters are displaying and selling their works online - I don't think it's...

Recently the same thing happened to me. Go into your BIOS and check the boot disk priority, and try swapping the order.

Not sure exactly what you mean. If it was 'What will people say about you at your funeral', then I really don't know. The older I get, the fewer the people become, so there won't be many there to say anything.
If it was 'What would you like people to say about you at your funeral', then it would be 'At least he went peacefully.'

I've told people that I hear in color, and a lot of my family thought I was strange, until I found online something called synaesthesia (apparently the name for it). Have you ever heard of this?
In fact I have synaesthesia, albeit very mildly and in the most common form. I see letters and numbers as having different colours, and also see the numbers arranged in shapes. Sounds tend to have colour for me, and, to a very mild extent, musical keys. The key of A major is, to me, red - although that might be because the letter A is also red for me.

Why doesn't Britain just give back the Falkland Islands?
The fact that we have British territory on the other side of the world a short distance from Argentina seems to me to be ludicrous. The islands should clearly belong to them, and we should announce our intention to return the islands to their control in ten years' time. If we are so concerned about the inhabitants, we could afford to pay for them all to return to England if they wished to.

Second answer. I find people's responses on this type of thread very interesting. Many people support mutilation with the fervour of those who support Sharia law. Welcome to AB. It's a forum like any other, except that it tends to be better moderated than some. There are some very nice people here, and some who are not so nice. We have our share of trolls and those who are constantly negative. You will soon get to know the more frequent posters - we have more than our share of eccentrics, but that makes the place interesting. Hope you enjoy it here.

What would you say to an "artist" or movie "director" or "musician" that lost a lot of money due to internet piracy?
The recent increase in the copyright period from 50 to 75 years has meant that there is a whole repertoire of classical music that amateur and semi-professional musicians are unable to afford to include in recitals, owing to stringent performance fees. This works to prevent the dissemination of music, and the money from professional performances does very little good to the estate of those...

It is possible to become world champion while only winning a few Grands Prix during a season. Why has society been taken over by health Nazis? Everything we enjoy has suddenly come under fire these last few years. Why?
Because people love to get money to carry out research, and so they make their statistically insignificant results sound much more important than they are. And because people are gullible, and believe all the rubbish they are exposed to.

Well, you frequently get postings on here from males giving the dimensions of their member and asking if it's small or large. Of course, how you measure has a big effect on the final result. Which may be why I have never seen a description on here of a penis smaller than yours. Unless by your measurement it is greater than nine inches, you cannot hold your head up here.

Are pet birds with 1 leg depressed?
A local pet shop used to have a one-legged cockatoo (hope you call them that in America - white bird with crest, very loud) and it was brimming with personality. It used to entice shoppers over by repeatedly saying 'hello', whilst writhing and bobbing, until they eventually went over to pet it. It used to love the attention and, so far as I could tell, was a very happy bird.

Well, rhinos have an interesting way of marking their territory. As they defecate, their tail spins round like a fan, and spreads the dung over an extremely wide area. Don't know whether this was what was meant, but it's the most obvious characteristic of the rhino, apart from their charge.

Maybe our expectations of politicians are too high. We should lower them. How low can they go before they're finally met?
I think our expectations are too low. The big question is how we can change the system so that those who *do* meet our expectations are the ones elected.

Answer to:
How is atheism reasonable?
Once again. Consider the fact that in human history there have been literally thousands of Gods, whose worshippers all claimed that they were the only true ones, and other people's gods were fake or evil. To decide that out of all these thousands, one of these invisible beings was the only real one would be somewhat illogical. To conclude that a real god is *extremely* unlikely seems to me...

Answer to:
I literally have zero skills. What should I do?
You might not have any work skills - I can relate to that, although I did eventually find something I was good at, although it was the last thing I would have considered. But apart from that, everybody is good at something. If it's a non-work-related skill then that's hard luck, but even so it can bring a lot of meaning and satisfaction to life.

Why does the word "piss" somehow sound worse than the word "pee"?
Because 'pee' has traditionally been the more polite word. Words get all kinds of accretions behind their actual meaning, especially those to do with basic things like the body, sex, religion and race.

Answer to:
The Beatles are the worst and at the same time most popular band of all time, does this prove they sold their souls to Satan?
As a musician I would say that the Beatles were far and above the standard of their contemporaries in terms of their harmony, melody and arrangements. It is true that the things that are most popular tend to be of the lowest quality, but that certainly did not apply to the Beatles.

Is a 'black hole' really black and is there really even a hole there?
Yes, they are black, but the accretion disk around them is very bright. And in a sense, yes, there is a hole there. An area of gravity so unimaginably intense that nothing can escape. That sounds like a pretty serious hole to me!
