Answer to:
can someone explain to me, how people are "born gay"?
I don't think that just because you're born with something necessarily means it's genetic. As far as I know no one has ever identified a gene for left-handedness and left handed parents are no more likely to have left-handed children than anyone else is, but somehow generation after generation, a certain percentage of kids seem to come that way.

I have a question for the good Reverend.
I was hospitalized twice as a child (tonsillectomy with complications at age 8 and a broken jaw at age 12). I had straight nurses and doctors - or at least none ever said otherwise and the odds would seem to be that at least most of them were.
How come it didn't make me straight?

Should "legal" immigrants have the right to vote?
I don't know if it's still the case, but it used to be in New York City that anyone who paid school board taxes could vote in school board elections, even if they weren't US citizens.
Answer to:
Why do immigrants insist on their new countries allowing them to continue following their social customs unhindered?
I cannot, and will not speak for other countries, but I have always imagined that many people came to the US specifically because the US does NOT enforce any religious, political, social etc. orthodoxy and one is (for the most part) allowed to practice one's own religion, social customs etc. if one desires.

How does a person become gay, straight, or bisexual?
I have no idea why I'm gay. I was never abused as a child. I did not have a domineering mother or cold, emotionally distant father, I have a very warm, loving relationship with my father; he's the first person in my family I came out to because I felt most able to talk to him. My parent's marriage was very traditional, my father worked and my mother was a homemaker. I've read recently that...

There's this old stereotype that gay men are that way because they have domineering mothers and cold, emotionally-distant Fathers. Nothing could be farther than the truth in my case; I've always had a warm, loving relationship with my Father, and to this day (and I'm now in my 40s) he's still the first person I turn to in times of personal or emotional stress or when I need comfort.

It can vary tremendously depending on where you live, work, go to school, your family, etc.
I'm a reasonably well off, well educated, white, male who lives in a major North American metropolitan area - for me it was relatively easy. It's not terribly uncommon for adolescent boys to experiment a little, usually with another adolescent boy. Contrary to the assumption in the question, my guess would be this is more common among boys than girls.

If you were born in the US, then unless you have subsequently renounced it, you are a US Citizen. Whether you have some claim to Canadian citizenship is a more complex question. Not specifically stores because they mostly all offer the same products - a tube of toothpaste is a tube of toothpaste wherever you buy it.
But I definitely patronize local restaurants. I've been to all the big national chains dozens of times and after awhile they get pretty boring and predictalbe. Not all idependent restaurants are good, but at least there's a chance of getting something...

IN RENDERING MILITATY HONORS TO THE FLAG, IS IT THE NATIONAL ANTHEM FOLLOWED BY THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE OR WHAT?
There are many different ways of rendering honors to the flag. Sometimes it is just a simple salute, sometimes (for example on first raising the flag in the morning) it's followed by the national anthem. The Pledge of Allegiance has never really been a major part of military (as opposed to civilian) honors to the flag. I cannot recall often (or really even ever) repeating the Pledge as part of...

Is it normal for guys to shave/trim their pubic hair? I'm a high schooler and was wondering if most men did so on a regular basis.
I don't think it's common, but I don't think it's abnormal. I suspect that far more men than will admit it have tried it at some time, but unless you're willing to put a fair amount of time and effort into regular maintenance it quickly becomes stubbly and itchy, and most guys don't think it's worth the effort. Try it sometime, and you'll get a new appreciation for how much time and effort...

Most public school districts will accept any child that is in IN FACT living in their district. I had a 16 y.o. boy living with me for a year or so because his mother was having a difficult time controlling him. I never had legal custody of him, but my local school district accepted that he lived with me, I supported him and that I was his de-facto guardian.

To your first question: Yes: contrary to widely held opinion, it's not illegal to have passports from two different countries as long as both are legally obtained and there's no intent to deceive. I have two passports and more than one customs agent has seen both; in fact, I used one of my passports as proof of identity when I applied for the other.
Second question: Not necessarily - lots of...

Why wouldn't you like hockey?
I rarely watch the NHL game any more, the emphasis on "checking" has slowed it down too much. As Old School says, too much of it is just brawling, thuggery; too many talentless goons hired just to intimidate the opposition. Hockey CAN be a great game - the first US-Canada game in the last Olympics was some of the best wide-open hockey I've seen in a long time.

Like Alec points out, a lot of people don't come out until they're older; I was 22. In my late teens and early 20s I dated a number of girls (only ever slept with 2). Although I've found some girls attractive, I've never been able to sustain an interest in one.

I(female)found out my husband of several years was with another male(orally)when he was much younger. What should i think about this?
You've given very little information here to go on. You don't say how old he was, or for how long this continued, or anything about the other male (another boy, an adult?). Adolescent boys experimenting with other adoloscent boys is not that uncommon, and rarely means much in terms of adult sexuality. On the other hand, if he was molested as a child or teen that is potentially a different...

I'm a civil engineer, an amateur ice hockey player, a history buff, an uncle, a veteran, an adult literacy volunteer, a homeowner, someone who stops at every garage sale I pass, someone who's trying to earn an on-line master's degree etc. etc. etc. but somehow as soon as some people find out I'm gay it seems like that's all they...

Do i need to be able to swim to join the air force? or will they teach me?
There were lots of people in my NAVY boot camp company that didn't know how to swim - they learned enough to keep their head above water. I joined in the late 70s (admittedly from a middle class, perhaps even slightly sheltered background) and two thing absolutely flabbergasted me in boot camp - 1)how many of my fellow recruits didn't know how to swim; and 2)how many had never been to a dentist.

Mostly yes. What does the red poppy mean on Memorial Day?
I've never heard of poppies being associated with Memorial Day as such but it could be becoming so. It was originally called Decoration Sunday but eventually wound up on the last Monday in May since 1967.

There is going to be some confusion here. In the UK the term "knickers" refers to womens underwear (I seem to recall a line in a Beatles song about getting your knickers in a twist), but in North America the term knickers (short for knickerbockers) refers to a form of men and boys knee-length trousers popular around the turn of the 20th Century; like in this picture. If most men are bi-sexual. Is it possible to loose interest in women over time and get stronger urges towards the same gender?
I think that most people's sexuality changes and develops over time. That doesn't mean I think most people switch from being straight to gay or vice versa, although some of the changes could potentially make given individuals more receptive to such. The US Constitution doesn't say you have to be born in the US to be President, it says you have to be a "natural born" US citizen. Even if someone could prove Obama wasn't born in Hawaii, it would make no difference. His mother was a US citizen - as far as I know no-one has tried to deny this. Illegal immigration is an issue that scares both major parties. Other issues (like say abortion) tend to divide along party lines. That's not to say there isn't the occasional defector (on both sides) but for the most part they split Democrat-Republican.
Immigration, however, is an issue that splits squarely across both major parties. Social conservative Republicans (e.g....

What is a referendum bill?
A referrendum is when an item of legislation that a legislature has adopted, or in some cases has even only proposed, is put to a popular vote.
This can be by petition; i.e. a petition is circulated and if the petition gets enough support the bill is placed on the ballot at the next election for a vote.
Or in some cases referrendum may be required: for example, in some jurisdictions any...

Why do young men join the military? It seems like a death wish in recent times....Just doesn't make sense to me.
I joined the US Navy at age 18, four days after I graduated from HS, and served for 10 years. Historian Gwynn Dyer's essay "Anybody's Son Will Do" which forms a chapter in his book "War" seems to explain it as well as any.

I'm a licensed foster parent, and I'm gay. It's possible in the state where I live. Over the past 8 years I've fostered about a dozen(not counting respite care) boys. what time zone is the "Continental Divide"in
This depends on what continental divide you mean.
A continental divide is the height of land on one side of which the runoff waters flow to one ocean and on the other side of which they flow to another. In reference to North America this is most commonly understood as the line separating the Atlantic (and associated waters such as the Gulf of Mexico) watershed from the Pacific watershed....

What is your opinion on homosexuals as boys? Should they be allowed to have boy sex? should they be promoted? I think so!
I hardly think it's necessary to promote it. Boys are more than inclined enough to experiment. On the other hand, I don't think finding a couple of underage boys in a compromising position is reason to panic. In our society, for various reasons, some good and some not so, we strongly discourage and place multiple safeguards against against heterosexual sex, so boys wind up occasionally...

You will not automatically be entitled to live in the US. You still have to apply for permanent legal residence in the US, which could possibly be denied (say you have a criminal record). Being married to a US citizen does potentially make it easier and faster; you still have to jump through some hoops, but you get head of the line privleges as it were.

If either of your parents is unusually tall the probability is that you'll be shorter. You need to investigate a statistical phenomenon known as "regression toward the mean".

Can a person be gay by choice? There are too many gay people for every single one of them to be born gay.
I think that in one sense at least some people "chose" to be gay although perhaps "opt for a gay realtionship" would be a more descriptive term. I think that operational bisexuality is FAR, FAR, FAR more common than most straight people, and even many gay people think or are willing to admit.

Do you think there will every be any light on the dark side of the moon?
The term "dark side of the moon" is just a euphemism, for the side of the Earth's moon that faces away from the earth. It is not really "dark", or at least no darker than any other side of the moon. The far side of the moon is in fact in direct sunlight just as often as the near side of the moon. The same side of the moon always faces the earth, but this is not true with respect to the sun....

Most jursidictions will allow an alternate oath. Many have simply deleted references to God from their oaths, period. The last time I had to give testimony, the oath adminstered was simply "Do you swear or affirm that the testimony you are about to give is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth". Immigration reform is an issue both political parties are afraid of. Unlike many other divisive issues, say abortion, it does not divide along party lines. I certainly grant there are a few anti-abortion Democrats, and a few pro-choice Republicans but mostly it breaks along party lines.
Immigration, on the other hand, cuts squarely across both parties. On the Republican side, business...

From where does the soul exit the body during Death?
When the first US cavalrymen came across the scene of Gen. Custer's defeat at the Little Bighorn they noted that many of the soldiers had been disemboweled, and accused the Indians of barbarically mutilating them. Later, more sympathetic observers would claim that the Indians, observing how bodies left in the sun swell up interpreted this as being the soul trying to escape the body, and that...

About the oil accident, cant they just find a massive bulder and stuff it in the leak? or around the area? couse its still leaking
I'm not an expert on these things, but it's my understanding that the oil in this case is not just "leaking" out but is being ejected with considerable force - an underwater "gusher" if you will. I'm afraid it's more complicated than just "stuffing" something into it. Perhaps someone with more expertise or familiarity could elaborate.

Is it illegal for a 16yr. old girl to have had sex with a 18yr. old boy but they been dating for a year before he turned 18 and the first time they did it was way before he turned 18?
As was pointed out above, you need to check local laws. Many states have so-called "Romeo & Juliet laws" that say if the difference in age is less than some amount, usually like 24 or 36 months or something like that then it is considered a low-grade class "C" misdemeanor or similar, which an overworked DA's office may or may not chose to prosecute.
On the other hand there are some states...

If you made a clone and then killed it would it be murder, suicide, or both
It would be murder. When and if (more likely when, I think) human cloning becomes possible you may be able to create someone genetically identical to you, but that does not make him you. He/she would still be a separate individual. Identical twins are genetically identical, but are still distinct separate individuals.
Answer to:
(US Political question) If a person serves honorably in the military, and is a "liberal"/"democrat" do conservatives consider that person good (for having served) or bad (for being a "liberal/dem")?
Nobody asked this liberal Democrat what political party he belonged to when he joined the Navy. There may be a disproportionate number of people from the south and mid-west in the military who may be more conservative, but there are also a disproportionate number of minorities, who are generally more likely to be Democrats.
Actually I found that most people in the military (enlisted at least)...

I don't think you are doing yourself any favor by trying to categorize yourself as necessarily one or necessarily the other. There are a lot of people out there who are functionally bisexual (some people believe we are all bisexual to some...

I have a good friend whom I met in SF, and he is a former NAVY Seal. He is also one of the most liberal person I've met, but he calls himself moderate. So I must ask, are there many liberal/moderate SEALs Or do you have to be a conservative to be a SEAL?
They really do not ask you what political persuasion you are when you join the military. I knew all kinds of people with all kinds of politcal beliefs in the Navy. Overall, I'd say most people in the Navy are rather apathetic politically. Few have really pronounced or strong political opinions of any stripe. Many are not even registered to vote.

The child, if born in the US, will be able to claim US citizenship under US law (14th Amendment). This will not change your status, you will still have to apply and be admitted and/or naturalized like anyone else.
Whether the child will have citizenship in your home country is up to the laws of your country, although most likely yes, as most countries recognize citizenship by derivation...

If two people live in two states with different ages of consent, for example if a20 year old boy were dating a17 year old girl, and if the age of consent in her state was 16, and his was 18, then would it be illegal for them to be intimate in the 16state?
Generally it depends on where the act took place, however, the older one might be looking at a charge of transporting a minor for immoral purposes.

HELP ABOUT CALİFORNIA! The age of consent is 18 in california. But what would happen if two 16 year olds have sex in Los Angeles?
In LA in all probability not much. It is technically illegal in CA, but only a misdemeanor, and the LA District Attorney's office has more than enough problems on its hands without chasing after teenagers boffing each other. If for some reason the case became political or high media profile they might, but I am quite confident that the great majoritiy of 16 y.o.s in LA who are "doing it" are...

Can two minors such as two 14 year olds or two 15 year olds have sex in new york if both agree to having sex? Is this legal? What would be the punishment for this if it is illegal? Does the same rules apply to anal intercourse and oral intercourse?
In most states it is still illegal although often it is only a misdemeanor (class of misdemeanor depending on the difference in age). The DA may decline to prosecute, and in most states nowadays registry as a sex-offender is not required in this case.

Do you agree with the new immigration law in Arizona: if you "appear to be illegal" (look Hispanic), they can stop you and check you out?
I'm wondering just how many blond-haired, blue-eyed, non-Spanish speaking Europeans the Arizona police will pick up. There's a lot of them in the country illegally too. They don't get here by wading across the Rio Grande, or hiking through the desert, usually it's by overstaying a tourist visa, but they're still illegal.

The US does not RECOGNIZE dual citizenship, but this does not mean it is illegal or prohibited, it is just meaningless under US law. The only way most people ever lose US citizenship is if they go to a US consulate overseas and fill out and...

In many third-world countries it is more usual than not for children to be born at home or otherwise not in a hospital setting or with a doctor present (it wasn't that unusual even in the US until well into the 20th C.), and many people, especially the poor, in such countries have no birth certificate. Answer to:
I had a baby with my illegal boyfriend. Does this make him legal? If not is there a way to make him legal without him leaving the US?
No it does not make him legal, and he is probably going to have to leave the US. The US does not normally accept applications for residence from within the US, they have to be made at overseas consulates. If you are willing to marry him, this will definitely help, but the fact that his child is a US citizen makes no difference since a minor cannot be a sponsor.

There were several recruits in my boot company who reported with quite literally nothing except the clothes on their backs. The military will issue everything you really need.
Answer to:
Do you think that the age for going into the military is too low and it needs to be raised about three years, this way people can get out of school and go experience life for a little and then make the choice if they want to go in to serve?
"You can train older men to be soldiers*; it's done in every major war. But you can never get them to believe that they like it, which is the major reason armies try to get their recruits before they are twenty. There are other reasons too, of course, like the physical fitness, lack of dependents, and economic dispensability of teenagers, that make armies prefer them, but the most important...

I was wondering if I would be eligible for any of the military forces. I am 6'2'', 250 lbs. I didn't graduate from HS, but do have a GED. I have a clean bill of health, and a clean background.
The military will accept a certain proportion of its recruits with GEDs, but its limited.
However, you can try picking up a few courses at your local community college. If you have successfully completed a certain number of college level credit hours (I'm sure you can find out what the number is at a military recruiting website) they will treat you just like you were a HS grad.

What is navy basic training like?
I went through Navy boot camp at RTC Great Lakes 33 years ago. When I went home on leave after boot camp someone asked me how I had "enjoyed" boot camp. I replied that boot camp wasn't meant to be enjoyed. That much being said, however, boot camp is also not the hell that some people (and some movies) have portrayed it to be.
US Military boot camp is very carefully pitched so that an...

Do you think its fair to classify all sex offenders as child molesters?(i Don't) as my husband is a offender, but he dont harm anyone.
Well, not all "sex offenders" are child molesters (even though its sometimes assumed they are). A person who forcibly rapes an adult is a sex offender.
I do think that in some cases the law may have gone too far. In some states, a 17 y.o. who is caught boffing his 16 y.o. girlfriend with her complete consent is going to be tagged a "sex offender" for the rest of his life, which I think...

Im 16 and have had stomach pains for a a few weeks now, I was thinking of taking alka-seltzer to ease this. Is it safe for a 16 year old to take alka-seltzer? (ie. aspirin based medicines)
Alka Seltzer is safe enough unless you have known allergies to aspirin or other ingredients, but if you've has stomach pains for "weeks" I'd suggest this may be more than a simple case of acid upset. You may want to consult a professional.

Answer to:
can a marine get dishonorable discharge or court marshalled for dating a 16 year old?
This may depend. How old is the Marine? In all states it is illegal for an adult to have sex with a minor, but many states have a so-called "Romeo & Juliet clause" that says it's not illegal if there is less than a certain number of years difference in their ages (typically 3 or 4 years). So if an 18 y.o. Marine were dating a 16. y.o. it wouldn't necessarily be illegal.
There are also some...

Are those large cheques that are presented at fund raisers 'depositable' or are they just for show?
There is no law that says what size or shape or color or material or anything that a check has to be.
You can write a check on a napkin if you can get someone to accept it. The coding, etc. on the bottom is for use by the Feds check routing system, but that doesn't matter if you take the check directly to the bank it's written on.

Why does the African-American community tend to be more homophobic than others?
I think a part of it is income and education levels. It is well established that negative attitudes towards homosexuality vary inversely with income and level of formal education. Despite a lot of progress, blacks in the USA are, as a whole, still much less well off and have lower levels of formal education than the majority.
I suspect that if you compared a group of middle-class,...

Generally yes, the US military pays to move servicemembers household goods for a permanent change of station (PCS) move (but not temporary assignments). There may be some exceptions for overseas assignments.

Have you or someone you know served in a war?
My mom grew up in England, and joined the British Army when she turned 17 in 1944. Since she was a woman, she was not a combat veteran. The irony is that she was probably safer in the Army than she was as a civilian living in England through the blitz and V1/V2 attacks.
