Answer to:
Should teachers who are snobbish and favour middle class children and preach that anyone who doesnt make a sucess of themselves when they are young are a failure, be fired? (I notice this is a common attitude amongst teachers).
I'm a teacher in a system which doesn't (yet) have the problems of NCLB etc. I have tried to show students that talent is not enough, but talent and application are required for success by externally measurable factors such as promotion/wealth/status. I am currently free to also share with kids that internally measurable factors such as self-assuredness/contentment/values are valuable things...
Answer to:
Vehicles stop on applying brakes. Please explain the principle of conservation of momentum in this.
Principle of Conservation of Momentum does not apply to the system of the car alone, as the condition "in the absence of external forces" is violated because the road applies an unbalanced force onto the car (via the tyres and brakes). It should be noted that the car applies an equal unbalanced force onto the Earth (via the tyres and road) which means that momentum will be conserved in the...

15ft boat at 40mph. Comes to a complete stop aftr running into boulders. Nothing moved an inch, nor passengers. What happened to intertia?
All momentum has been transferred to the Earth, different parts of the boat's elastic structures and then to the air. The rocks' crystal boundaries will have been distorted by a negligible amount in various directions. Had the boat and Earth both been perfectly rigid, the world would have changed its rotational speed by one massofboat/massofearth-ish-th (you'd need the radius and mass of the...

Does an electric field travel inside a wire?
Propagating electric fields are a very complex and tangled concept inside and outside a wire. My understanding is that the charge distribution acts to cancel out field changes inside a wire, but that the interactions of fields can allow charges to move one the outer surface of the wire. Charges can move, a concept called the Poynting vector can show that energy can be transferred along a wire...

Is a screwdriver an example of a wheel&axle?
A screwdriver seen from above looks like a turning wheel with an axis of rotation normal to the wheel. I think an axle does not need to bear a load - the spacestation in 2001 was a wheel IMHO. A screwdriver and screw combination is definitely a wheel when the screw first touches the surface. I think a wheel slipping down a slope it is trying to traverse is still a wheel, so I think the...

Today my car heater only blows cold air no warm air? Last week my mechanic said I need to have radiator acid flushed? Cuz alot of sluge in radiator. We just bought in June. Could this be part of the cold air issue? My son just left for college in car.
Some of the cooling system hot water is diverted through a 'mini-radiator' called the heater core. Air from the blower fan passes over it to warm it up - that's why you don't get hot air for a while when you drive off in the morning. If there's enough sludge in the system it may have blocked that tube branch. If the car is old enough and starts to run hot, using the...

I've been in three countries as they've introduced smoking bans. It helps move people away from the idea of smoking as a social norm - in the same way that drink-driving is no longer acceptable. However, I'd be concerned if the same approach was applied to junk food and lack of exercise though. Eventually, the state would be too closely involved in your life. "First they...

Yes. You'll find the experience so horrible that you'll get out and walk.

Should home schooling be made illegal in families where parents have no teaching credentials?
No. To home-school means to submit to a formal regime of benchmarks and paperwork. A parent who is willing to jump through those hoops and forgo a salary is going to give more to a student in their time together than a lock-step class in a school building. "Unschooling" is more controversial, and I think you'd have to be a saint with a book in you to be brave enough to try it.

You are transported to Italy in 1500. How do you prove that you come from a technologically advanced society and are not just a crazy person in strange clothes?
Excellent question. Nude, means you need to steal a robe from someone - not ideal. By 1500 you're 50 years too late to invent the printed book - but you can use it to tell a wide audience of your fantastical ideas. You've got two years to invent the first clock, but obviously you'll not know how many hours you need to put into the effort. Galileo isn't born yet, but head...

Now that the Army and Marines are getting MRAPs, what will they do with their old Humvees? To whom will they sell them to?
I saw the predecessor to the Humvee - the MUTT - on the streets of Saigon 10 years ago. That's the only time I've seen them in civilian hands. They were all to be rendered unusable (crushed transmission tunnel) on retirement because they were deemed unsafe for sale to the public. I presume something similar will be done with the HMMWVs.

Two types: A dirigible has a fabric covered metal framework which gives the vessel its 'sausage' shape. It's called a 'ship' because in the same way that the hull of sea-vessel gives it buoyancy to stay afloat in water whether it is moving or not, an airship only needs the propellors to push it about. An aircraft needs the propellors to move the wing through the air...

The problem is that plants need oxygen too, and different amounts at different times, so it's not just a direct trade-off. Lets say you get your 100 plants delivered to your personal biodome-thingy at 2pm. You monitor your CO2 production, and it is being matched by the plants' C02 absorption and 02 production. Why does a pendulum climb equally high on the other side of the swing?
If it did you'd have a perpetual motion machine. You lose some of the energy you gave the swing by lifting it up as noise and heat in the pivot and to air resistance. Otherwise the energy just repeatedly gets converted from gravitational potential, through kinetic, back to gravitational potential as it has nowhere else to go.

That sodding squirrel is just giving 'cupboard love'. They're devious little tree rats. I remember one looking at me with huge dark eyes while I was eating a sandwich. When he saw I wasn't going to give him a bit he vanished. Next thing I know the little b*gger has climbed a tree, dropped from a branch into my lap and wheeched away with my lunch!

My toilet bowl loses water. Overnight all of the water is gone except about one cup. There are no leaks that I can spot and it flushes ok. But what makes it lose the water in the bowl?
An occasional hopeful fix is a plunge to get rid of any "threads" which are lying across the hump of the S bend and allowing water to crawl up and over. Otherwise you're looking for a vent blockage.

Obituaries (and death notices) aren't printed on the same day that someone passes away. There is flexibility on when they can be published. I saw a scientific documentary on TV yesterday which mentioned "dark matter" in the universe. Is dark matter the same as anti-matter?
No. We can make anti-matter, but we only know that dark matter exists due to its effect on large systems like glaxies. It has the same mass and size of charge, but the charge is positive. When matter and anti-matter meet, they annihilate each...

My FIL has tolerated me for 20 years even though we come from very different outlooks. His daughter still digs me and we do very well. If a version of me tried dating MY daughter, I don't know how tolerant I would be. I respect my FIL for that.

Alright I really want to know if smoking marijuana kills your brain cells? Did you just hear this from some random person, or did a professional scientist tell you? Is your answer evidence/proof? Or is it an opinion?
"Kills your brain cells" is a short-hand distillation of some of the many things which marijuana can do to harm you. Scientists have studied the long and short term effects of dope; both for and against. On balance the medical advisors to government say that its side-effects outweigh its benefits as a medicine. That's a good enough reason for me to stay away from it. However,...

Do you have a partner to help provide? If you have to work to put bread on the table then so be it. The more years you can delay putting your child into child care, the stronger the attachments between you and your child will be, and the less likely there are to be academic or behavioural problems. However, you are a person with needs too and only you can strike the balance for your family.

nimmi gives a good answer. The only bit I'd clarify is the line "A steady current through a capacitor deposits electrons on one plate and removes the same quantity of electrons from the other plate." An ammeter connected to one plate would show a current through the capacitor while it was charging, however the charges move through the circuit, not the dielectric. Just remember...

If earth would fall into a black hole could we be moved to another part of the universe near some star or planet to give earth heat to live or would we die during the black hole.
The 'tear in the fabric of spacetime' that some people postulate is caused by a black hole may or may not allow a planet to move through. On the other hand, the accretion disk around the black hole is so full of rubble and tidal forces that we'd never get the planet safely over the event horizon to find out.

The one that you change directly that affects a 'dependent' variable. e.g. If you change the temperature of an oven, the cooking time of the food will change. Little 'nostrils' called stoma under the leaves can close to keep in water, but the trade-off is that it shuts off the CO2 in and O2 out cycle. The stoma are also recessed a little so that the wind can't pull the moisture out as it flows past.

It's supposed to be a trait that detectives know of, so if they ask you what jacket was someone wearing they can see if you're really thinking back to an actual occasion or not. If you say blue without having your eyes flick over, then you're using another part of the brain, and it's not beyond...

Close night tripper, but the other way round. Deoxygenated blood on its way back to the lungs is darker in colour. If you cut a vein with deoxygenated blood it reacts with the oxygen in the air as it bleeds out to become the bright red colour of oxygenated blod.

Which aquatic animals have swim bladders ?(urghh , science research .. again)
Fish. They act like little ballast tanks in submarines. Muscles squash the bladder which makes the fish smaller when the fish wants to sink. When it wants to rise it relaxes and the swim bladder expands to make the fish displace more water and be more 'balloon-like'.

Is it true that when you have an impact, such as jumping off a moving car at 40 mph, if you loosen up and let go of your body you'll receive less injury and tighten up your body will do otherwise?
Yeah. You're building crumple zones into your joints by not locking them. A common injury in car accidents is for the driver to have hip and shoulder bones pushed through the sockets. Race car drivers sit real close to the steering wheel to prevent this possibility. When you stop you decelerate. If you can make any part of your body take longer to stop moving, you reduce the average...

If you can't think of a good reason, then I assume you must just need the money. Can you couch your reply in those terms?
Otherwise I presume you would be talking about an interest in the challenges of maximising the benefits for both your clients and the people who find themselves in strife.

The only thing I can think of which implodes is a container under pressure. Answer to:
If a car goes up a 2 mile hill at 30 miles per hour and instantly turns around, how fast does it have to go down the hill to average 60 miles per hour for the whole trip?
Or the short version.
Total Distance = 4 miles.
Time to get up 2 miles uphill = 4 minutes
60 mph = 1 mile per minute so need to travel 4 miles in 4 minutes. You've already used up your 4 minutes to go two miles.
Answer to:
If a car goes up a 2 mile hill at 30 miles per hour and instantly turns around, how fast does it have to go down the hill to average 60 miles per hour for the whole trip?
Time before turn = t = 2mile/30mph = 1/15th hour
Time after turn = x
Total distance travelled = d = 4 miles.
Average speed in mph = v = 60 = d/(t+x) = 4/((1/15)+x)
Solve for x
4 = 60((1/15)+x)
4 - 60*(1/15) = 60x
4 - 4 = 60x.
x=0.
You can never average 60mph as you would have to make the second leg in zero time.

The standard operational tactic was to run a line of Shermans across open ground. The Tigers they faced would kill the first Sherman then have to traverse the turret to kill the second which would be trying to close the angle and get behind. It would be a race between the Tiger and the third. The surviving Sherman(s) were to have made it behind the slower tiger and killed it with its pop-gun.

Kazzzy. Speak for yourself, but we of the upper classes firmly believe in selecting for the genes that bring about tiny chins and a braying laugh. If that's not good breeding, I don't know what is!

Why is a distinction made between a state-issued Driver licence and a state-issued Identification card for identity purposes? I had to get my girlfriend to sign an Affidavit of Identification vouching for me to get a passport.
You can choose whether or not to drive a car. You cannot choose whether or not to have an ID card. Most opposition to ID schemes around the world relate to the databases that are starting to go behind them. "You want to buy a pie with your gas sir? I'm sorry but the cash register government link says you've used your health credit for the week - you may have a carrot stick or...

I can't help you believe, but I can help you WANT to believe. Either there is a just God or there isn't.
Case 1. There is a just God and you live a devout life. You go to heaven.
Case 2. There is a just God and you don't live a devout life. You go to hell.
Case 3. There is no just God and you live a devout life. You die, end of consciousness.
Case 4. These is no just...

Why do I like answering other people's questions more than asking my own?
It took me a minute to figure out what you meant, but I do see it now. I do a mixture of both when I ask a question. I'm either curious to know the answer, or I'm interested in seeing how people respond for interests sake. For example in this question, I'm pleased to see that noone has used the terms 'clever-clogs' or 'smug.'

If the sun just disappeared on any given day without notice, how long would it take for it to affect the earth?
8 minutes for the last sunlight to have reached us, but the gravitational pull which keeps the Earth orbiting the sun would vanish instantly. We'd feel an enormous lurch as the Earth stopped following a curved path and continued on in a straight line.

Why do we only live so many years? Do you think 200 years from now, people are going to live till 140, thinking that we were technologically lacking, like how we look at those a hundred years ago?
Biology isn't my strong point, but I believe that there is something about the way that genes make copies in your cells that a limit to the number of times it can be done. When that limit is reached throughout your body something gives, and you cease to be able to live because that part has failed. It's a bit like that point where your $500 car needs a $500 part. When science...

Where I live, there are 70% more people going for cremation now instead of a burial in the last 30yrs. Why the do you think peoples attitudes are changing?
Possibly for the same reasons that mausoleums have died a death. A cultural change towards a ceremony that remembers a person but which doesn't force people to visit a place of memorial that is established by the state and threatened by developers. Ashes can be interred or scattered as people wish, and many people will feel that they are less of an imposition in an urn. Authorities...

Teaching 2nd Grade, you tell a student, "Don't work ahead." He replies "Don't gifted kids do that?" You sigh impatiently & say "Just keep to where we are for now." His response: "If society did that, we wouldn't invent new things." How would you reply?
As a teacher of High School students I see dozens of kids with great potential who never adopted the old maxim of creation being 5% inspiration, 95% perspiration. They are, at best, mediocre academically.
If you want to pander to his giftedness, tell him to take cress seeds (or something else which sprouts easily and grows into a shoot, like alfalfa) and put them into two groups on pads of...

Hackers often argue that hacking is for the good of all people because it points out flaws in computer systems. Do you agree with this? Why or why not?
The most ethical approach I have seen in operation is one where the hacker finds the flaw then contacts the company involved and asks them to fix the flaw. If nothing is done AND the flaw affects third parties, then the hacker contacts the technical press.

Answer to:
You are on a spaceship moving closer to the sun. Your food supply is supplemented by an onboard greenhouse. The light intensity is increasing and for visual comfort, you must block out some sunlight. What color of glass reflecting pane do you install to p
You want to allow the colours that plants like - yellows and greens - to come through. You can sacrifice the red and blue ends of the spectrum. Your reflecting coat should therefore be a combination of the colours you want to lose. That's the same reason the lenses on cameras and binoculars have a purple tinge to them.

Ihave a 2006 Ford Expedition. How do I disable the Seatbelt chime?
Plug your seatbelt tab into the socket on the stalk beside the driver's seat. ; )
I was watching a British TV programme yesterday which said that Aston Martin won't be able to build cars that look like sports cars any more because US laws now mandate that people who break the law and won't wear seatbelts must be protected. This was claimed to be because so many US drivers...

How many miles are needed to turn an oil freighter before it can safely dock?
In the Firth of Forth near Edinburgh the docking platforms for oil tankers are such that tugs can manipulate the ships. It's the same in a port I watched in New Zealand. The ships crept up and were pushed and turned into place. Do you mean something like, in an emergency, how far would a supertanker travel if its engines were switched off from crusing speed? I'm curious to know...

Light and carbon dioxide gives what?
By themselves? Nothing new.
In a green plant? Read up on photosynthesis as it's not as simple as it seems. How a plant operates with its gases and food generation depends on whether it's day or night among many other things.

Whenever people think of long voyages in outer space they have to face the problem of zero gravity as its harmful to our body . why haven't the scientists thought of an space craft which keeps spinning as it moves to create a kind of artificial gravity?
Plenty of people have ... think of the transit station in 2001 A Space Odyssey. I suspect the reason why Skylab/ISS/Mir type platforms don't have that facility is purely due to the marginal nature of the payloads we can deliver. We don't have the boost or money available to build the kinds of structures that would be needed. The ISS is a flat, gantried structure for the same...
