Are Homeschooled Kids at a Disadvantage?
This isn't a straight yes or no question. It all depends on the parents and situation. Why was the second chosen to be the SI unit for time? Why not the minute or the hour?
The second is the base unit of time as the meter is the base unit of length and the gram is the base unit of mass. Without adding prefixes, there is no unit of time smaller than a second, as it goes for the meter and gram. I assume it was chosen because it is the smallest unit described by a word without prefixes attached.

Home school can be good if the parents are qualified to teach their children. Parents should be required to have a minimum level of education that included the subjects they plan on teaching their children. Many parents don't even come close receiving a high school equivalency much less have the ability to grant one to a child.

If any atheists hate Christians just because they are Christian I would say it's probably because they get sick and tired of being asked what church they go to by strangers and then getting negative looks and vibes when they respond that they don't go to church. If science destroys religion, where will we get our moral codes?
Who said that science destroys religion? The whole point and draw of religion is that science CAN'T destroy it because religion is not based on observation, evidence and what can be tested. Religion is based on fictional explanations that are not supported by any evidence. Science does not attempt to prove religions wrong because religions will always create a new loophole to escape through.

When signing up for Medicaid, W-2s or tax returns are required. If they don't pay income tax then they won't have that paperwork and won't be eligible. Why do they need Medicaid if they make $18,000 and don't bother to pay income tax, have no rent and are such a small family? Save Medicaid for those who need it.

A question for atheists: Do you feel hypocritical rooting for sports teams from Los Angeles, San Antonio, San Francisco, or other other cities whose names are religiously-based?
There is no reason to feel hypocritical because a person is not actually rooting for mythical beings. The support is going to the real humans that name themselves after the mythical beings.

In high school I never took the SATs because it was optional for us since we were in a vocational school. I'm in community college, now, and I'm wondering; does UMass require an SAT score? If so, what do I need to do to take the test?
You only need to have an SAT or ACT score if you have less than 27 college credit hours. If you have 27 or more you are admitted based on the grades of those 27 or more credits and are considered a transfer student. Stay in your current community college until you have at least 27 credits and then transfer and you won't need the SAT or ACT.

It would definitely bother me. It's bad enough that people get addicted to such a destructive habit. If someone isn't addicted and still smokes then it's a sure sign of stupidity and recklessness.

Easy. Community colleges will accept almost anyone as long as you have the minimum SAT/ACT scores or pass their placement tests. Once you get into one of those you can get the good grades and get in anywhere else. You should go to a community college first anyway so that you don't waste money on expensive tuition for the first two years.

Can atheists have soulmates?
Well the question isn't whether or not they can have one. The question is whether or not they believe that they have one. Nobody really knows that soul mates (or souls for that matter) exist. An atheist could have a soul mate but not believe in a soul. That just means that the atheist has a soul mate but doesn't really see it that way. Of course it could be that nobody has a soul mate...

Do you think people who do not believe in environment or global warming are not willing to commit because it will change there way of life and maybe change the way they operate there business and surely time has come that people change there attitude
A reluctance to change their way of life is one reason. Another more important reason is a stubbornness to accept that environmental issues are real and a poor education in the sciences at a young age. People tend to rely on politicians and newscasters with little or no scientific training to learn about science. They should be learning the science from scientists and teachers of science.

With Earth quakes and Tsunamis occurring ,with floods and typhoons and more and more disasters happening on a regular bases do you think this has anything to do with Global warming.
Earthquakes are not affected by weather or climate. Earthquakes are the result of built-up pressure from the movement of the continental plates. Tsunamis are typically the result of an undersea earthquake, volcanic eruption or landslide. Tsunamis also have nothing to do with global warming.
Flooding, typhoons (hurricanes) and other weather-related disasters ARE related to climate...

Do so many men refuse to consider changing their surname or are you making a large assumption there? My wife never asked me to consider it because she hated her last name so much. I don't think many men are asked if they want to take their partners name. We have to be given the option in the first place in order to refuse it.

If it is true that one "cannot prove a negative," then how can the IRS "prove" in a courtroom, that someone NEVER filed a return, or NEVER reported an income source, or NEVER sent them a payment? ALL of those things are indeed "negatives," aren't they?
Very little is proven in court. Evidence is given to support a particular verdict but rarely is anything proven one way or the other. The IRS can show evidence that a return has never been filed and since filing the return is required then it would up to you to show evidence that you had filed a return. It's your responsibility to keep that paperwork.

Of course she's right. Does she cook and clean every other day of the year? Why shouldn't she have a day off too? Would you rather work full time and then come home and do everything she would normally do? The correct answer is that you never should have asked her to cook dinner but offered to do it yourself. Answer to:
Are there any careers associated with physical science?
Only about 1,000,000. Physical science is a VERY general category. What field are you interested in specifically?
Answer to:
Is it unussual for hurricanes to strike the west coast
It is not nearly as common as on the east coast. The west coast has colder water and hurricanes need warm water or they can't exist. The hurricanes of the east coast are fed by the Gulf Stream while the water on the west coast is fed by upwelling which brings cold, nutrient-rich water from the depths.

Answer to:
Why scientists do not use a standard set of steps for every investigation they conduct?
They do use the very same general steps.
1. Make observation
2. Ask question
3. Look up relevant information
4. Form hypothesis
5. Test hypothesis (experiment)
6. Confirm or change hypothesis
That's the very general version of the scientific method.

Why do schools teach evolution, but say we do not teach any one belief or religion. i myself am christian, and i do not uderstand why they teach evolution. all the stuff that humans came from apes, i dont belive it and i dont want them to teach it.
Schools teach evolution for the same reason they teach algebra, history, chemistry, etc. Evolution is not a belief or religion and to think otherwise is to show your ignorance of the subject. Who cares what you want taught? School is about teaching knowledge to children not teaching what some religious fanatics want taught to children. Some people don't believe the Holocaust happened so...

Why wouldn't it be fair? What's wrong with a company selling something that it has spent time and money developing? Do you think the programmers and designers behind the clothing work for free? What's ridiculous is that people actually have the money to buy this stuff.

My daughter is 16. We just moved and she has slight seperation issues from a boyfriend she has had for about 6 months. This past month she had over 11000 texts and about 7000 minutes on her cell. Is this crazy amounts of texting and calls or not?
Ah...that's a hell of a lot of texting. I text a lot and I use about 200 a month. 11,000?!?! That's ridiculous! Your daughter needs to be spending that time studying or with family. There's nothing wrong with texting or calling a lot after a move but these numbers are waaaaay too high. You need to get a handle on this situation.

Why rainbow is curved?
The first two answers sound okay but are incorrect.
They are curved because of the wavelength of each color. They increase in wavelength as you go from red to violet. Since they are part of the same beam of light but have different lengths, they curve. Try holding two strings of different lengths together so that their ends match up and the distance between the strings stays the same...

I'm a science enthusiast and I don't act that way. Einstein is a person and is certainly capable of making mistakes or developing a theory that might one day be discarded. No. It is my opinion that anyone that starts believing in a certain faith because they find out the world is about to end is not believing anything and is only trying to create a back-up plan. Any god worth my time would see right through that.

What's to forgive? He didn't do anything you didn't do. Both of you fooled around with her but neither of you were dating her so he hasn't done anything wrong to expect forgiveness. Sounds like you just want sex with no commitment but you expect her to be committed to you. That's just selfish.

You'll find very quickly that believers will argue that matter or energy could not have always existed and must have had a creator but will, at the same time, tell you that God has always existed and needed no creator. It's funny how they can twist things around to rationalize something isn't it?

It's actually very simple. Rational people (not just atheists) try to find answers to the questions of the universe instead of just being lazy and attributing them to some supernatural force. If evolution were true where is all the intermediate fossil remains? or are there any living?
Every fossil and every organism alive today is intermediate. If you don't understand that then you don't understand evolutionary theory. Of course that is evident by looking at any conversation you have ever had on AB about evolution.

Answer to:
Why is it important to teach evolution if nothing about it is factual yet? ( it is still a theory; that's like teaching someone how to drive and use a car that has not been completely made).
The fact that you use the ever popular phrase "still a theory" means that you know nothing about this subject and should leave it alone. There is no classification higher than "theory" for a scientific process. A scientific explanation of a natural process is only named "theory" after it has been tested and confirmed many many times over. It is a theory because it...

If latin is a dead language, who were the last people or nation to use it, and why did they decide to stop? I'm studying medical terms, and the question just hit me:)
Latin was still popular in Medieval Europe but new languages were being introduced and evolving away from Latin. Latin is still the official language of the Holy See and the Vatican City-State. Latin is now used in scientific and law terminology because it no longer changes.

Since men and women seem to fight so much when together as a couple, do you think it would have been better that a "third" species ( androgynous yet capable of reproducing ) had been available to us?
In order for there to be a third species...there would have to be two. Men and women are both of the same human species. You must mean a third gender.
Not all couples fight a lot. They replace the fights with happiness.

Unfortunately yes. I had a friend who tried his best to make up his own stupid stunts. I'm taking my buddy commando bcd to red sea this year. Should i be concerned about the relective strips attracting unwanted attention from big hungry fish?
I doubt that those strips are as flashy as jewelry. They are made to reflect light that is shone on them directly. I have never even had a problem with predatory fish being attracted to jewelry and I've led thousands of people on snorkeling and diving trips that did not remove their jewelry.

Neither has a majority or divers' preference. PADI has better a better marketing department so it would seem that they are more favored in the world when they are really just the most recognized. I assume you are referring to random mutations? That's nothing to believe in. Random mutations are fact. Anyone can see that. The best thing you can do is either not buy items with excess packaging or be sure to recycle the packaging. One of the worst things I've seen for packaging has been memory cards for phones and cameras. The card takes up about one square inch of space and the package is usually about 6" X 8".

I'm not sure what this question is referring to. The only people required to salute are military or maybe law enforcement folks as far as I know. Probably a stronger than the Christian or Jewish religion, since they are steadfast in their non-belief.
Stronger belief that Christian or Jewish? How so? It doesn't take very much faith to learn about the natural world and witness it with your own eyes, ears, touch and taste. It takes tremendous faith to believe that there is some supernatural being that created everything and exists outside of the natural laws of the universe.

Atheist. This is a serious question that is not meant to bash you. How do you believe we got here on earth if there is no god? How did the earth get here? and evolution can't be your answer being that you dont know how the animal you evolved from got here
Evolution certainly can be my answer. The question is how did WE get here. Humans got here through evolution. The first organisms' origin is still not completely answered but most likely originated through chemical evolution. Much testing has been done in this area that confirms the hypothesis. Earth is one of many results of the "Big Bang".

Nobody knows that global warming is a fraud because...well...it isn't. Believe it or not, those who agree that global warming is happening do not bow down to Al Gore. He is the most famous figure for climate change but that doesn't mean we worship him. I personally don't think that the way he tries to educate is the most effective way but that doesn't make him wrong.

The world is about to reach its limits of sustainability in many ways. Does science offer any answers as to where people will realistically be living, once Earth's resources are exhausted or maxed out?
If we keep using the resources at the present rate then there will be less humans to worry about. All populations of organisms hit a ceiling when they max out their resources and then their numbers decrease dramatically to a sustainable level. We are expected to hit that ceiling within this century.

Atheists deny the existence of God. If an Atheist argues that there is no proof of the existence of God, is it fair to require Atheists to prove the non-existence of God to support their position? If not, why?
No. There is no natural argument that God exists like there is a natural argument that the sun is bright. People created religion. Therefore those who create the religion and make the claims are the ones that have the burden of proof. So I agree with you Faerie, the one who is making the argument has the responsibility of proving their case. Believers are the ones making the claim that God...

Why do so many Atheists beleive that the Universe came into being solely by accident? Since this Universe has no purpose, couldn't we also reason that our existance has no purpose?
There is no evidence that points solely to a designer or creator. There is evidence to support the idea that the universe came into existence as a result of natural processes.
Yes we could reason that human existence has no superior purpose. Many people have come to that conclusion.

Many Christians are yelling for the USA to teach creationism in schools. If they want this, how about evening things up and teaching evolution in church? After all, if we are going to combine church and state, we should do it across the board, yes?
That wouldn't make anything equal though. Creationists are attempting to break the law by teaching Creationism and ID in our schools. There would be no law broken if we taught evolution in church. It's just an example of how desperate religious fanatics are to control all of the lives around them instead of living in peace with them.

The more people that believe in your beliefs, the more confident you can be that those beliefs have some kind of real foundation. That doesn't make it true but it makes insecure people feel better so they can sleep at night.

Is the whole topic of same sex marriage ,in itself, immature and childish? Why should any mature adult care if one chooses to marry one of their own sex,and whom is it hurting? Is is not time to move on to important issues in these modern times?
The answer is hidden in your question. You asked why any mature adult would care if one chooses to marry another of their own sex. A mature adult would not do that. It is very childish to meddle in the business of others when it brings harm to them. We have so many other important things to worry about that I hate even having the option of voting on someone else's choice of spouse.

Nobody believes in evolution because evolution is not a religion. You either agree with it or you don't. If you are smart enough to know that, then you would know that evolution has nothing to do with the origin of matter.

It's perfectly understandable. The pages can be edited by anyone so not all of the articles can be trusted 100%. Some professors allow you to use Wikipedia as a starting point though because the bottom of each article usually has credible sources that you can research.

I doubt that the woman would be executed within nine months of receiving the sentence. People usually sit on death row for many years I think. Even if this were to happen, I'm sure the state would extend her time on death row until after the baby was born.

I've always wondered why Christians harp on evolution. To me, there are better places in science to hang god's hat - like all the constants that seem fine tuned for us. And thoughts?
I definitely have thoughts on that. The universal constants in physics are not fine-tuned for us. Life is fine-tuned to those constants. We all adapted in response to those constants. The same applies to Creationists' argument that Earth is perfectly designed for life. That's ridiculous. Life adapted the way it did because of the conditions of Earth. Their argument actually works...

This is a tough subject to tackle. On one hand, I say I'd rather a horrible murderer die quickly instead of using up resources serving a long prison sentence. I also say that if someone feels they can take the lives of innocent people just because they want to or similar vicious crime, then they don't deserve to live. On the other hand, is death really punishment? If there is no life...

Sauron didn't leave Middle-Earth but just traveled into the East. He probably didn't detect the ring because his power was very weak and was not fully recovered until after the majority of the time that Bilbo possessed the ring.

I think in this particular case we are seeing the same thing that's always happened but in a different way. Normally we have some incredibly beautiful people that are not talented but make it because of their looks. Here we have someone who is not so attractive but because she can sing decently, she'll make it. I don't think she's phenomenal in any way. She's a decent...

An atheist can be satisfied knowing that they did not live a lie just because of the fear of Hell. An atheist can be proud that they stood firm in their beliefs instead of bowing to a god for the sole purpose of a reward.

Who do you think will win Idol '09 and why? Who do you think should have won last year?
I haven't watched it this year but the best performer last year was definitely Brooke White. Neither of the Davids should have made it to the top 12 and they definitely aren't talented enough to have been the top 2 in my opinion. Brooke was so much better than the rest. That Amanda Overmyer chick was absolutely horrible and shouldn't have made it past the first round of the season.

According to Wikipedia the average surface temperature year round ranges from the high 70s to the mid-high 80s. A shorty would work but you might get a little chilly. I'd wear a full 2 or 3mm.
*edit*
Obviously the above temperatures are in Fahrenheit but I thought I should make a note of that. :-)

Australia is considering marriage "contracts" which would be good for 5 or 10 years. When the contract time is up, the marriage can be ended without a nasty & costly divorce. Is this a good idea? What is your opinion?
It makes sense. Marriage is no longer considered a lifetime commitment for many. I don't see anything wrong with the law taking into consideration the fact that there is NO way that anyone can see the future and absolutely no for sure that they will not become a different person completely. People change as time goes on. Maybe the law should allow for that.

What would you say if a state or province banned the use of pesticides as a precautionary measure, even if no definitive quantitative evidence were available to support the claim that pesticides are harmful to humans and/or to the environment?
It is my opinion based on history that anything artificial that we put in the environment is bad. If a state decided to ban something like pesticide without showing any scientific research, I would probably support it but insist that the research be done so that we can find out what the effects are and if they are harmful. A preliminary ban on anything artificial being put into the environment...

I once attended a intelligent design/ evolution debate and discussion. A phrase was quoted saying: "Evolution is a fairy tale for adults." Do you believe that statement is true? Why or why not?
Of course not. Evolution is a scientific theory and is only labeled as such because it has a large amount of evidence to back it up. Fairy tales are based on imagination, not facts.

Why do you seldom find fossils in a metamorphic rock?
The creatures that it covers get burned up in the process so there is no skeleton to fossilize. Either that or if the metamorphic rock is being changed over a long time, it is still subjected to extreme temperatures and pressures that would destroy any fossils that are already formed.

That someone is an idiot. To say that black people come from monkeys is primarily an insult that makes the assumption that blacks are from some origin other than other races. Are environmentalists sending the wrong message and keeping people indoors?
Some of them are yes. The way to save the world is to educate people about environmental issues without scolding them. People don't like to be scolded. They don't like to be scared either but a little fear about the current state of things is a little necessary I think because it can get things moving. There are ways to educate people without so much negativity. Environmentalists need...

I can address your second question. If a person is entirely happy with their own country and likes everything about it, why become President? Also, what are you basing your accusation on that Obama doesn't like America? Is it just because he called America arrogant? Well...that's just plain true. We are.

If you haven't even become certified yet then I probably wouldn't worry about buying gear. Many people get certified and then only dive once or twice a year. How much does it cost to become scuba certified in the United States? I'm currently in Panama City, Panama and I've heard it's cheaper here but is the certification even transferable to the states?
What is the agency you are currently certified through? Most likely it is transferable to the US. Around where I live an OW certification costs around $250-300, depending on whether or not gear rental is included and the boat trips are included.

Definitely for them. They are expensive now but that's only because there is a lot of research left to do. The only reason that fossil fuels remain as one of the cheapest fuel sources is because it is has been around for a while. Give the biofuels and other alternative fuels a chance at research and development and they will surpass fossil fuels in efficiency.

No. That's certainly possible but it makes more sense to me to accept that since life did not exist before the positioning of the Earth's orbit, there was no "perfect" location. Life evolved the way it did because of the position of the planet. The planet was not placed here with the expectation of life evolving. Life is the effect, not the cause.

By pressing charges on him and not sending him to jail, the only thing you are going to teach him is that you will do nothing to prevent him from doing it again. He's only going to punish you for accusing him publicly. Charge him, prosecute him and send his ass to jail!

Neither.

What do you think of Kent Hovind?
I think it's funny that one of the many things he preaches about is how his tax money is used to teach children about evolution in public schools, yet he is currently serving a ten-year sentence in prison for about 50 counts of tax evasion and tax fraud.
I do love it though when Creationists use him as a source. It just makes the conversation so much fun from that point on.
