it kinda depends on what you would call earth...did it start as the gases to form the planet began to coalesce or did it become earth when it was condensed enough to form solids?
Answer to:
What is combustion?
it is the reaction that occurs when you have a fuel source, heat to create vapors from the fuel source and an ignition source to cause the vapors to react, one more thing, the mixture of fuel and catalyst(oxygen)must be in the right proportions to combust and/or burn
some things will burn without oxygen
combustion is actually a chemical reaction, as is fire

Everyone is getting older every minute, but why do many people hate or fear getting old?
If you have accepted the inevibility of death and decay I don't think getting old is a problem. Wisdom comes with age and getting older should lead to further enlightenment that is not possible in youth lacking the experience that can only come with age.
There are many other advanatges too, you can belch and fart in public, drool, play with your food, etc. etc.

If a guy is simply happy drunk in a bar and walks over to another guy who is a complete stranger and kisses him on the cheek, then the stranger punches him in the face for doing so ..Would this be an indication that the stranger has homophobic tendencies?
It could mean that, but I wonder if the puncher may have been trying an empahtic way to communicate non-verbally. I think it's more likely that the guy who did the punching has poor communications skills.

Are there any people on AB that you make a mental note about avoiding them because they seem so argumentative?
No. I am here to hear people's thoughts and opinions. I want other perspectives, either to validate or moderate my own thoughts or to realize my position is shaky. I have been accused, probably justly, of being arrogant, so I also need to hear it when I have it coming. I love how this place works and I want to hear what people have to say. It is a fabulous social experience. It also gives...

2001. I was at a motel in Virginia and was going out to the lounge to get coffee. Everyone was in the bar watching tv and I walked in, looked at the tv and saw the first tower burning. Suddenly the other one was hit. Very strange. We were traveling back to Ohio that day. It was a strange day.

Christians: Here's a question I'm pondering: Why or how did Satan get so much power? Is he really omni-present? How is he in so many places at once? Afterall, he is not God.
According to the bible Satan was the number one angel in heaven. When he fell he didn't lose any power which makes him such a powerful foe to God and man. His name was Lucifer. This story is found in Isaiah 14.

A perception. You are as free as you think you are. Make a list of things you have freedom from, or a list of things that you feel infringe on what you think freedom is. 50% of marriages end in divorce--and even experience teaches us nothing--60% of second marriages fail. -- How do we fall in love with people who later turn out to be so bad for us?
Love is not about the attention we get, it is about the attention we give. If two people take that approach in a relationship, they will endure for a long time. It is about all the things that come into our lives as well, but without supporting one another and not expecting anything in return, someone will get tired of it.

Absolutely! Everything is flammable. You only have to have the right conditions for ignition. For most boogers it requires pretty high heat. By the time you get to the heat required for ignition your booger has changed considerably. So, technically, you could say, no, but, if you really need them to burn, yes. It takes way too many to heat a house though.

The first purpose of a breast is not entertainment. They can be a lot of fun, I am male, but they have been mischaracterized for a long time now, at least in western 'civilizations'. Have you ever had a night time dream, that turned out to be a premonition of some kind?
No. A dream might reflect a hope we have and we may believe that something has happened to us that was forecast in some way by this dream, but the dream has nothing to do with the passing of the event. It is very easy for anyone to assign a meaning to something that satisfies a desire or want. If we want to believe something is so we can stretch things to our liking. Humans are notorious for...

The ancient civilizations thought night time dreams as being very important in their lives, and "Dreamtime" was a portal to connect with the cosmos? Do you think dreams can be,and are used in that way?
No. Dreams were and still are a fascination. Not much more than that. Dreams only connect to the stuff and connect the stuff, that is in our heads. You will be as close to the cosmos in your dreams as you will be standing on the ground. Dreams are fascinating! Curious replays of the events of our lives, or some kind of hope projected, often embellished by conscious or unconscious thought. I...

Are night time dreams trying to help us in balancing our lives, and form of self realization for our issues of that time in our lives, like a personal councilor in our heads?
Anything can be assigned value or given meaning. There are many areas of 'psuedo-science' where people look for 'meaning' in the obscure. There are plenty of confident people in these pursuits who are willing, and they may be sincere, to indulge in attempts to find 'meaning' in the obscure. Why are night time dreams sometimes confusing and hard to analyze?
Some people have a lot of faith in dream analysis and attempt to give prophetic meaning to dreams. There is meaning, but I doubt if dreams are really prophetic. I think this is a legitimate question. All you have to do is look at recurring events. We don't know what lies ahead with as much certainty as we can predict the past being repeated. So what does he accomplish in the remaining 6 minutes per hour of his life? Anything. Are you sure this is not an exaggeration? Ok, if it is not, does he have stock in the site? Tit for tat. Hmmm. How moronic. I hope to f--- not. If furthering, enabling, justifying religious persecution of any kind anywhere, is a rationale to be applied to this question, we are far worse off than I have imagined. Warrior zealots probably don't feel the need to do any thing like this, but I suppose this kind of thing could be inspirational.

Do you have a phobia ? If so what ? What do you think made you like this?
Of phobias. I avoid them. The fear of becoming phobic.
The knowledge that inordinate fear can become a serious hindrance helps me keep things in perspective. I do have a bit of claustrophobia that I believe is the result of getting stuck in a very narrow rock passage inside a cave when I was about 10. The possiblity I might not get out crossed my mind and that was a bit unnerving. I have...

If...?
Toast with butter. I like to see how much butter I can add to my toast without losing a single drop anywhere. Not one drop. And you can't let it be wasted by getting it on your fingers and not being able to lick ALL of it off. Butter cannot be wasted! Ok, well, ok, I am being a bit dramatic. I do like butter though.
I am not sure your point was completely fueled up.

Which of the following offers the best identification of "abortion"? A) It is a topic of conversation. B) It is a claim. C) It is an issue. D) It is an argument
Probably more of a 'C.' for most people since it seems we are 'for' or 'against'. I can argue 'D.' from either position. Sometimes it is just 'A.' but I believe it could become an issue or an argument quickly if there are polarized people in the discussion. Not sure what you mean by 'B.'. Do you mean it is a right or a choice?

Can any one in this world say what is created first and when ? i am asking for the object before which there was nothing .
"Nothing" is an irrational thought to begin with. God is an "irrational concept" that requires a subject to harbor the notion, that is to say without an imagination or self awareness or the "subjective experience", there is no measurement for any of this. The big bang is a strain on the imagination of most people, the "void" before "creation" is...

What is the process of a lightning strike?
simply put it is nature's way of balancing a scale
a portion of atmosphere is the scale and electrical charge is the stuff at the ends of the scale
when there is too much difference between the ends of the scale some stuff jumps from one end to the other in an effort to balance the scale (systems of energy desire equilibrium, null, stuff gets to rest that way)
we see the...

What do you think about the democrats ideas of giving some of the tax rebates to people who don't pay taxes?
What groups of people are we referring to? Fixed income people, retirees, the poor, etc. Haven't heard about illegal immigrants getting a cut. It really doesn't matter who gets a cut. It is going to be doled out anyway, somehow. The best thing to do is accept your cut and do what you want with it. It is a dig to the working folks. I agree. But, what are you going to do, quit working...

Has anyone here, however briefly, experienced "enlightenment" (not religious ecstasy please). What did it feel like?
See Part I of Parsecs answer maybe it is part II, can't be sure. This might have been some transcendant experience designed to take me away from the nonsense of subjectivity. To experience real reality. Ok. I have had experiences like this before and since. Not the same thing, but the same intensity, impact, etc. Out of body and out of time stuff. I believe there is so much more to what we...

Has anyone here, however briefly, experienced "enlightenment" (not religious ecstasy please). What did it feel like?
I don't know if this is a qualifying answer or not. I will attempt to relate this story anyway. I was having a discussion with someone I knew and he wanted me to provide a TOTALLY unbiased answer to the question "What is faith"? In order to accomplish this I had to empty my mind of whatever perceptions of 'things' I may have that could bias my response since faith is...

Have you ever been cleaning around the house and found something that was really disgusting?
Dessicated mice are interesting finds. Not particularly disgusting though. I get emotional about it. Knowing the little vermin starved to death and I had all that cheese in the cheese drawer. I guess I have guilt feelings over finding them. I don't clean anymore.

Has anyone ever tried DMT? And why do people think all drug users are idiots? I think anything done in moderation is fine. It's cool to explore different perceptions on the universe. What do you think?
DMT is pretty intense. Make sure you don't have to do anything, like stand up, sit down, move, etc. Breathing is okay. I enjoyed it. Drugs in general are not a good idea however. They need to be managed for the best results in society. Too many people running around out of their minds on who knows what.

Answer to:
Why do things seem to happen at the wrong time? Is it a conspiracy? :-)
Nothing happens at the wrong "time". Everything happens in the moment. The conspiracy is the effort to convince humans that time is "something". There is no beginning, there is no end, there is this moment. Scale is the thing that boggles the human mind, so we invent and imagine things to put our being into "context". Time.

Ever hold a lightbulb thats been on for hours just because you want to see how hot it really is?
I have actually experimented with this and found that any light bulb whether on for a few seconds or several hours will burn you equally well...of course higher wattage bulbs do a much better job of providing evidence for this. When this is done, does your fingerprint remain on the bulb? After a few of these experiments, no.

If GOD created Man in His Image, and Man, by committing original sin obviously had a flawed character....does it mean GOD has a flawed character?
It is a disappointing thing to know that men invent and practise religions for the purposes of men. God didn't give us any religions. Just a thought.
We are an image of a thing. We are not the thing. A very good analogy for anwering what it means to be the image of something is to consider the light of a distant object, another galaxy, star, etc. What we observe is the image. Not much...

Physical or a Spiritual Resurrection?
It all depends on which answer you want. Jesus made it clear it is a spiritual ressurection. We often worry too much about the afterlife. If we should be concerned about an afterlife, we should be more concerned with what we are doing in this life. Let the grace of God take Its course. Believe and live a life of benevolence.

Professional and amateur astronomers took their best look at a huge asteroid as it zoomed past Earth yesterday at a little more than half a million kilometres distance, NASA said. Did you feel it as it whooshed by? (humour please)
Why...yes I did. As I was meandering my way through my memories of days gone by, in particular, 3rd Wednesdays of the J months, I started to think, do I hear the voices of tiny crickets? Nope, I said to myself. The only other possible explaination to consider was...of course...the whooshing sound of a near miss asteroid. So, as it turns out, soon after, the authorities notified the general...

Could you live with someone who was mentally unbalanced?
It can be fun, it can be a bummer...challenging, easy, dull, exciting, fascinating, boring, intriguing, inspiring, sad etc. Very much like living with humans. The greatest difficulty comes with the magnitude of the imbalance, departure from 'normal', nominal is maybe a better word. Rage can be disconcerting, manic highs can be scary, it all depends on how well you tolerate things that...

Humpty had already gone off the edge when he realized he was infertile. Realizing he would never become the rooster he had dreamed of becoming he fell into a deep depression.
