Why can't the Space Shuttle land on its own when returning to Earth?
The Space Shuttle does land on its own when returning. Or do you mean "why does it need help from a control tower when it lands?" Although the astronauts are highly trained, like any good pilots they still need ground control to guide them in upon landing.
Perhaps you mean "Why can't the Space Shuttle take-off on its own when leaving Earth?" In that case you...

How are we able to determine whether a person's face is male or female?
Another clue, although not exactly on the face, is the adam's apple. No female will have one, and no male will not have an adam's apple. The degree of pronouncement may vary, but there will almost always be at least a slight lump below a male's chin.

What does it mean if you experience pain in your side while running?
I agree whole-heartedly with the last poster: deep breaths to increase the oxygen to your body and reset your diaphragm is a sure-fire way to help relieve the "stitch".
In addition, I have often found that shaking out and/or flexing you hand and arm on the side of your body where the pain is helps ease the pain.

If they were never cut, how long would one's fingernails grow in a lifetime?
The rate fingernails grow depends greatly on the health and diet of a person and also on which finger (the longer the finger the faster the nail grows.)
However, it is said that healthy fingernails grow an average of .5 millimeters per week. If you lived to, say, 85-years-old and never had a nail break you would have fingernails around 7 feet long.

If you break a mirror and don't see your reflection, what does this mean?
Check your neck for holes. Chances are you have been bitten by a vampire. Legend has it that vampires (and those who have been bitten by vampire, therefore becoming vampires themselves) cast no reflection or shadow.
This, by the way, comes from the idea that vampires are the living dead and therefore without a soul. For at death the soul is said to leave the body.
If you are to...
