Go and see her, for goodness' sake! I miss mine dearly, she died when I was too young & stupid to really appreciate her, & now I regret not seeing her more often. She was an amazing lady, spoke about 5 languages, concert grade pianist, taught all her life, survived the war - smartest person I'll ever meet.

You see the office slacker (attractive female) slip out of a back store room. Shortly a supervisor slips out behind her. Both were adjusting their clothes upon exit. 5 weeks later the slacker gets a lateral promotion with more pay. What would make of it?
I would wish I'd caught it on the video phone. Be interesting to see what the M.D. had to say about it... I really hate slackers who work they way up using their hole, it's despicable and shows the fallacy of all these 'inequality' claims.
Answer to:
You go to a a store and see one of the workers accidently drop all the boxes. What do u do? help, ignore, or laugh at them?
Help them. I stacked boxes too, at one point - nothing is more irritating that some idiot pointing and laughing at your misfortune. The odd thing is these people act all surprised and hurt when they get a smack in the chops as a result.
Answer to:
Why do we laugh when we see some one slip/ fall down?
'We' don't. Last time I saw someone fall down, it was a frail little old lady, rushing home from shopping to her bed-bound hubby. She split her eyebrow open & her shopping rolled down the road. Nobody laughed - why would they?

Does complexity mean design?
Not necessarily. Complexity can be the result of careful design (as in the case of a CPU IC) or the result of natural trial-and-error (evolution) e.g. the eye, kidney, brain etc.
Design speeds up the result, as the process of selecting the successful design variants and discarding the failures can be steered by the designer, but evolution takes longer as the design variants stem from random...

What do you think about the "rapture"? Is there such a thing? The word "rapture" isn't in the bible anywhere that I can find. In 2Thessalonians 1:6-12 it speaks of the retribution, but never rapture.
Well, events of the day have clearly proved the whole thing to be a vast, steaming, weakly contrived pile of manure. And I only use that word to avoid censure. You know what word I mean.

why is it that vladmir nobokov's book lolita considered a classic by some considering the subject matter? and what else did he write?
Because it is a classic. Don't judge a book by it's cover, read it and understand it first before you comment. It's actually pretty sad, and quite moving. In the same way that the film 'Trainspotting' did anything but promote or glamorize drug usage, as was widely surmised by people who hadn't read the book or seen the film, so 'Lolita' isn't a book promoting child abuse. Witness the turmoil...

is there any draw back to high wattage inverters and how long can they last
They are expensive, which is a significant drawback - as to how long they'll last depends mainly on how good they were to start with, and how often and how heavily they are loaded. A good quality unit which is moderately loaded should last years. A cheap eastern import may melt within minutes.
Answer to:
Is it possible to "sabotage" an electric fence by somehow "overloading" it? Can I pour water on it?
Short it to ground, anywhere. Touch voltage will now be negligible, and it will discharge its battery faster. If you don't want to be detected, or are responsible enough not to permanently disable it this way (and maybe keep livestock from escaping onto the highway) then take a shorting wire with you, and use it only as long as you need to in order to climb over.

Do I need a voltage converter if play my us ps2 in Bangladesh. voltage of bangladesh is 220V and the adapter reads input 110V-240V while output reads 8.5V. What's the deal? Pls helpppppppppp.
The 'deal' is exactly as stated on the label. That's why they put it there. If the label says 'input range 110V-240V' and your supply is 220V, well.... 220V is inside the stated range of 110-240V, isn't it? Yes. So it will work. Producing 8.5V out as stated.
The only problem is if the supply swings widely in excess of 100V or more - the PSU decides whether it's a 110 or 220V supply on switch...

I have a small printer that uses input voltage of 120v, but we use 220v here.I can use a step-down transformer alright, but I want it to be handy by just droping it with a resistor. How can I achieve this?
You can't. No. Don't.
The current drawn by the printer varies, depending on what it's doing. So the voltage dropped across your resistor would vary in proportion to the current. Sometimes it would drop too much (and catch fire) and other times, not enough, so your printer PSU would blow up.
A transformer is the way forward. A non-isolating auto transformer would be the most compact and light in...

I'm trying to replace a blown fuse in my stereo. The original was 5mm x 20mm (3/4" x 1/5") and had "T2AL250V" written across the top. I bought a new one that said "2A 250V" across the top, but the wire broke as soon as I plugged it in. What do I need?
You need to fix the short! Replacing the fuse each time it blows does not address the underlying fault. If it's a modern, chinese stereo, it probably has an electronic switch-mode power supply. A very common failure mode of these supplies is to draw short-circuit current, and they are often uneconomic to repair.
Answer to:
My panasonic vcr blew a fuse. I bought the fuse which is a 250V T1.6 AL. Every time I replace it , it keeps blowing. can anyone help?
Almost certainly the internal switch-mode electronic power supply has failed, and is now drawing short circuit currents. This is a very typical failure mode of these supplies. Often, due to the extensive damage caused by the failure, it is cheaper to replace the whole machine than to repair it. If you know where to look, you can often identify strong burning smells, or sometimes identify burnt...

This would prevent the two power sources from fighting each other, but WOULD NOT provide equal load sharing, the higher voltage supply on load would try to provide the most current, possibly cooking it. Which kind of people could subsist on cat's and dog's food and/or fat domestic animals dietary?
People who can't afford anything else. I read that because of exactly this, pet food must be fit for human consumption, i.e. no diseased or rotten meat used. I'd eat it if I was hungry enough - just a matter of degree! Probably better tasting & healthier than MacDonalds... :)

Are you ready to take it apart, and do you have a multimeter / test meter? It's pretty straightforward to check the continuity of the heater elements - if it is open circuit it's probably burnt out. Have you checked the fuse? If it's blown, usually the element has shorted to ground, or itself.

i have a sump pump already installed. can i buy just a battery to put on in case of power failure?
If the pump is AC powered (plugs into the mains supply) then no, you would have to use an inverter (electronic transformer) between the battery and the pump to change the low voltage DC from the battery to high voltage AC for the pump.
If, however, the pump is DC rated (should say on the info. plate on the pump) then yes, you can run it from batteries of the same voltage as the pump.

Since there isn't a choice of "mindless drivel spawned by a tedious idiot" then 'duplicate' is probably the most accurate choice. It wouldn't necessarily be 'nonsense' if it was asked just once by a person with a brain, and since there are no obvious market forces at work, it might not be 'spam' either. How do you deal with an annoying and bitchy sister?
a) Wait until she's 5mins into her regular half-hour shower, and then shut off the hot water at the valve/boiler/cylinder. Turn back on immediately that you hear the bathroom door, and plead total ignorance - further testing of the shower will produce normal results. What's the difference between power, voltage, currant and energy? I know the definitions but I still don't get the difference.
Electrical power is the measure of energy transferred per second - currant is a small, dried fruit and energy is just that.
So, two of them are electrical quantities, the other is a baking ingredient. If you confuse them, not only will your circuits fail (and possibly smell of burnt grapes) but your cakes may prove to be electrifying rather than tasty.

Answer to:
Whats better for house plumbing, copper water pipes or PVC?
Copper, every time. Will last a lifetime. A lot of the remedial work I do involves badly installed plastic pipework. It's ok for certain things, within tight limits of correct installation, but copper is a superior material. Neater, more robust, heatproof, vermin proof, sag proof, much more nail resistant - list goes on.
A.Plumber
Answer to:
Can I use a PVC pipe for hot water?
If it's rated for it. Should be printed down the side. If there is only a standards number, you'll have to look it up. Polybutylene is a better bet - higher temp. rating. Used in underfloor heating, along with PEX.
A.Plumber
Answer to:
Homeowner plumbing question. I have water leaks in my home cold water inlet pvc pipes. It looks like rats or some other rodent may have chewed into the pipe to cause the leak. But I have never heard of a pvc pipe leak caused by rodents, is this possible?
All the time. I have had to replace poly pipe struck by rodents - little gits gnaw on it to sharpen their teeth. Trouble is, once you've found one weep, chances are there are 100 more just waiting to go. Replacement with same is a waste of time - the like the fresh stuff. Strip out and replace with copper, and get the vermin control in while you're at it.

Answer to:
how does a water flow switch work
Why use it
Usually the flow of water in a bore restriction applies force to a paddle, which then moves and operates a switch either directly (via a seal) or magnetically, through the wall of the switch.
Some flow transducers work by means of a paddle wheel which spins proportionally to the magnitude of the flow, the revolutions being detected either optically or magnetically. Other types use Doppler shift...

how to cut a asbestos cement pipe manually?... what is the name of the saw ?
Don't. Asbestosis or mesothelioma is a grim, grim way to go. Sawing, sanding, drilling, fragmenting - all very high risk. Fibres on your clothes can get breathed in long after you take the mask off. Why risk a grim death years down the road? Way too late once you've got it. Leave it alone, or have it dealt with by specialists. That's what we're taught - all the old lags have died off before...
Answer to:
Some of my incoming water line is PVC, all else is copper. Are there any health concerns with drinking water and PVC?
If it's the correct grade, marked for potable water, then no, PVC is fine, as is copper. Lead pipes in a soft water area are a hazard, as are cheap 'flexi' braided hoses, as the non-approved cheap chinese liners have been proven by WRAS to support microbial growth. Check the source of the materials, and try to buy from a reputable merchant - avoid products priced at a fraction of the going...

They're both equally as pointless and undesirable. I knew a man "Doug" whose handshake was like holding a dead fish - clammy, totally limp and disgusting. It made me irrationally angry and want to crush the limp, dead hand into a thin stalk! Nasty.
Weak coffee is pointless, too. Make it properly or don't bother - warm, slightly brown water just doesn't do the job!

Depends on what you're wearing it with. At best it could look ok if you were careful, but it could easily look wrong - it's both bold and of a particular style, i.e. probably wouldn't work if you trying to combine it with elegant, graceful evening-wear as it's too bulky and flamboyant.

Go and live in the city, that's how! Bloomin' townie.. Not everything that isn't you must be killed, you know - this 'see a thing, kill a thing' mentality must stop. How do I get my mom to stop bringing junk food home? I crave it when it's in the house, but don't when it's not. I don't want to gain weight. I'm thin and exercise regularly, but she doesn't as much. I don't want her to ruin her health.
Go shopping with her, as that's when she's weakest. Provide moral support, steer gently, and failing that, take all the junk out of the trolley and replace it with food. Remember - if it's not in the cupboard, you can't eat it - so keep junk out of the house to start with and then there'll be no temptation to give in to. Also, don't shop on an empty stomach - always a recipe for a trolley full...

Little and often. Take the stairs, not the lift. Jog a little, instead of walking. Get your bike out and do a few miles each night - not an epic, just enough to get your heart going, and breathing heavily. Small changes are easier to maintain, huge shifts are not, so aim for small goals and achieve them, rather than fail at huge targets, which isn't helpful. It's about a gradual but permanent...

As an uncircumcised male i feel like I'm the only one and everybody else is circumcised. Does anybody else feel like this? If so how do you convince everybody that your penis is just as normal as theirs?
Don't bother trying. Enjoy your foreskin; it provides a great deal of pleasure on its own, and protects your tip from chaffing which, over time, reduces sensitivity. Plus, 'self time' is much more pleasurable, and also, it could be an interesting talking point for the fairer sex - appeal to their natural curiosity, and then reap the rewards! Which is faster: a golf ball after being hit or a sports car?
Well, if the golf ball had rolled to a stop, and the car was going flat out, then the it's the car. If the car was parked, and the golf ball was in mid flight, then it's the ball.
You really should try a bit harder.

Not good. However, chances are all your data is still ok on that disk, so even if someone else can't offer a solution, don't bin it as it's an easy job to remove the hard disk and mount it in another PC with a high chance of recovering valuable files. You won't be able to recover installed software as easily, so persevere but bear this in mind if all else fails.

What kind of hairstyles can you do without a blow dryer? Mine broke and i'm at a loss of what to do with my hair now. it looks like crap without a blow dryer.

Answer to:
Why do companies insist on packaging things in those clear plastic packages that you cannot open without scissors. Even then it's not easy getting to the object without cutting yourself. I cut my hand badly opening blow dryer. Can't they just use a box?
Yes, as answered I reckon it's to reduce theft. Often a tag or other device is sealed up in that packaging, which is deliberately hard to remove. Nice one store thieves, way to ruin it for everyone.
Answer to:
Is there any particular trick to opening those ridiculous electronics packages, like for calculators and walkmen, or is it just scream,
Use a sharp, stout pair of scissors, or a sharp Stanley knife (very carefully) and cut off one side and the top (or bottom) of the heat welded strip. With a side and an end open, you can often winkle out the contents. Beware the razor sharp cut edges and corners, though!

Answer to:
My Motorolla C168 indicates charging when connected to charger/power but no matter how long connected the battery charge indicator on the phone remain low; in other words no charging realized. What could be the problem, the phone or the battery?
Could be either. Remove one variable at a time - try and borrow a known-good battery from a friend or repair shop and run it flat, then perform a complete charge cycle. This should localize the fault to the 'phone or the battery.
Answer to:
How long should I charge a new cell phone battery?
Always consult the manufacturer's instructions. They selected the battery chemistry and designed the charging circuitry, so they should know what's best for that particular device. Also if you have to make a claim, you're on solid ground if you followed the instructions explicitly and still have a problem.
Answer to:
I accidentally plugged the wrong adapter into my son's portable dvd player to charge the battery and now it won't turn on at all. Can the dvd player be fixed or should I just buy him a new one?
Unless you have a good electronics bench and the appropriate test equipment, or know someone who does, then you're stuck. You might be exceptionally lucky and only have one or two components burnt out, but if the PSU is crude (likely) then the internal damage is probably extensive and it's beyond economical repair. It's often very difficult to identify and source the components used these days...
Answer to:
I need to charge my son's 12 V power wheel battery but don't have the charger. Can i just splice the battery wires to the a 12 V power adapter and then plug it in? does that work? just don't want the battery to explode. ;)
Nope. You'll either burn out the adapter if it's a cheap one, or damage/destroy the battery. Get hold of a proper battery charger for that type of battery (i.e. lead acid, nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal-hydride) as they all have different charging requirements. Deviating significantly from the required charging parameters can, at best, lead to expensive damage, and at worst to explosion, injury...
Answer to:
What capacitor do i need to give me a 1 sec pulse at 12v to trigger a 12v relay?
You won't get a pulse out of a capacitor on it's own - you'll get an exponentially decaying voltage from a charged one, but this will cause the energized relay contacts to fall open weakly at an indeterminate time, which is a bad idea. You need a circuit to compare the voltage on the capacitor to a reference, as the cap charges or discharges. The best bet for you is the 555 timer IC in...
Answer to:
I need to automatically read a point's voltage at 1, 30, and 90 sec after an initial trigger. What is the best inexpesnive way to do this?
It depends if your time's free, or not. You could build a logger for less than you could buy one (Google 'cheap data logger voltage'). The design depends on the magnitude of the voltage, and the required accuracy. If you were in a hurry, your best bet might be to buy a simple logger, and hook it up to your PC to program and interrogate it.
If you wanted to build your own, my next suggestion is...

i) Anything sealed up at normal atmospheric pressure would swell and/or explode.

Answer to:
An AC circuit has an rms load current of 79A & an effective voltage of 97V. What is the true power dissipated by the circuit?
With the parameters given, you would be able to calculate the apparent power. To calculate the true power, you would have to know the power factor (Cos theta) of the load, or be able to measure/calculate the phase angle between the load current and voltage. Then, as stated elsewhere, it's easy.

Under certain atmospheric conditions, the radio signal can bounce between the earth and the ionosphere (charged atmospheric layer) repeatedly, greatly extending the normal line-of-sight range of the transmitter. This effect is often observed at night.

On a transistor specification sheet you notice that the beta is specified as 100. you would expect a current of 1mA in the base circuit to produce ? in the collector.
Beta is the DC current gain for the transistor. The collector current is the product of the base current multiplied by the gain figure (beta). So for beta=100, the collector will drive 100 times the base current, i.e. 100x1mA=100mA or 0.1A.

Answer to:
Why current leads in a capacitor?and voltage lead in an inductor?
The voltage across a capacitor is proportional to the charge it carries. Current must flow into the capacitor to increase the charge, and as a result, the voltage developed across it rises. Think of the capacitor like an empty bucket, with the level of water representing the voltage. You must add more water before the level (voltage) rises, and so the voltage lags behind the current, or the...

Treating the fungus is easy - preventing re-occurance is more difficult. The spores remain in your socks, shoes, bathmat etc. so unless you're prepared to burn everything and start a new life, you have to change the environment around your toes and feet so that the fungus cannot flourish. This means letting the air in and around your toes as the fungus needs moist, warm conditions to...

Will a small solar panel (for a lamp) charge in the shade (or limited sun) during the day, or do they need the sun directly on them...? (we want lights that don't use oil or electric by our pond in the back yard, but it gets very little sun each day...)
Not enough, it won't. You'd need a large, efficient array (the more expensive type) and very efficient lights, such as white LEDs. You'd want an efficient store as well, one with little or no leakage - maybe a super-capacitor rather than batteries. Basically it's very hard to get something out of nothing. How can I run a LED off a 1.2 rechargeable battery? I know they have forward voltages in the 3.0V level but I really do not want to use anything other then a single AA rechargable
Nickel rechargeable batteries can vary between 1.1V at end of discharge, to 1.4 at just-off-charge. This 0.5V variation is about 30% of the LED forward voltage (typically 1.5V at If 30mA for a standard red LED) so the brightness of the LED will vary greatly, depending on the state of charge of the cell. I would put 6.8ohms in series, just to limit the current from a freshly charged cell to safe...

A much bigger, non-standard solar cell for starters! Maybe a high-powered 12V + 6V matched array in series, with output voltage regulation and clean under-voltage cut-off for starters, but to deal with useful levels of power, you'll need either a very beefy linear regulator or an efficient (but complex) switching buck/boost regulator capable of dealing with wide input variations as the...

For AC, to increase the voltage, one would use a step up transformer. What would one use to increase the voltage of DC?
Use an Inverter. In simple terms, they switch the incoming DC to AC at a high frequency, transform it up using compact, high frequency transformers, then rectify and smooth the AC to produce DC out at a higher voltage. Note that if your output voltage is higher, then the available output current will be correspondingly lower. Voltage regulation and current/power limiting are integral to the...

If you can't verify this by disassembly and inspection, or by waveform measurement, you could try connecting a polarized DC electrolytic capacitor across the power supply output. Answer to:
When I take a shower, the water seems to go hot then cold then hot etc.... The suite downstairs doesn't have the same issue and the taps throughout the house seem to be OK.
Why would this be happening?
There are several things that could be happening, but if you have instantaneous hot water (i.e. combination boiler) and the flow rate through your shower head is insufficient, then the boiler temperature may be peaking causing it to cycle on and off. This is easy to check - run the shower as normal, then go and listen to the boiler firing, see whether or not it is continuous. A thermostatic...

Ok, here goes.
A relay is an electromechanical switch. A control current in the relay coil magnetically closes (or opens) one or more electrically isolated switches, and are perfect for switching heavy loads or high voltages safely from a low power/voltage signal. They are, however slow, and for large loads they have to be physically very large and therefore greedy (e.g. HP contactors).

Electrical power comes to transformers. if we don't use any power what happens to that entire power. does it gets waste or?
No. Imagine your cold tap is off. The water in the pipe stays put, at the static pressure, waiting to go - it doesn't run off elsewhere, getting wasted.
In reality there is a tiny loss of power in the off-load transformer (due to core and copper loss during hysteresis) which is why there is a big push to get everyone to unplug or turn off, rather than sit in standby.

It's certainly worth a go, wouldn't you say? Your argument equates to "What's the point of doing anything, you're only going to die anyway.."
Plus the current rate of climate change (for whatever the reason, before anyone squares off) is extremely rapid for such a large system, and if it keeps going we're all in trouble. If you were a passenger in a car, and...

What would it take to rig a solar- and wind-powered streetlight to feed electricity back to the grid in the daytime?
Not a practical proposition, I'm afraid. Otherwise they'd be everywhere. To be efficient (and therefore economically viable) wind turbines and solar collectors have to be large, so that the output generates significantly more revenue than the capital and running costs incurred. Nice idea though. Maybe someday high level street lamps will be replaced by low level semiconductor lamp...

Does Earth4Energy really work and allow you to use solar and wind power for energy in your home? I have heard it does work, but would like your opinions!
Yes, if you are prepared to put the work and time in - both of which are extensive. But don't pay for these 'exclusive' plans; there are many good variants available for free download - just search around. You will have to...

Is there a way i can use my laptop wireless without using a desktop as a base station i`ve got ntl broadband but no desktop and i want to use around the house what do i need?
Get hold of a new or used wireless router. If your laptop has wireless already, that's all you should need. But be careful, you want a pure router, not the more common modem/router which only has a telephone jack for the DSL line. I reckon your NTL modem will have a network connector on the back for data, which patches into your wireless router directly, which is why you want the pure...

My Laptop has been on its way out for a while and it finally went 'poof' and exploded the other day I want to take it to a shop to see if they can rescue anything from my Hard drive but am not sure where to go - needs to be around central any idea's?
Depending on what failed, you can do it yourself fairly easily by stripping down your ex-laptop and removing the hard drive. Google your model no. + "service manual" for the service manual - you only need a selection of screwdrivers and a little patience after that.
If you have a desktop PC you only need an 3.5"-5.25" adapter cable to be able to mount your laptop drive in...

Is there any hope at all of recovering the data of a hard drive whose laptop went for a swim?
Potentially, yes - depending on how much money you want to spend. How long was the laptop immersed, and to what depth? If the disk drive didn't flood internally, and is still electrically intact, recovery is simple. If the drive got wet internally, or fried as the laptop fused (e.g. salt or chlorine water) then it's a bit more tricky. As a last (and most expensive) resort, if the...

Sounds more like driver corruption than it does mechanical. Did it work perfectly before the cartridge change? Have you done anything major with your PC? (E.g. restore from RP, recover from virus, reinstall drivers etc.) If you have the old cartridge, and it's not totally dried out, you could try it again. Or try reinstalling the printer drivers, or printing from a different application.

It shouldn't do in the short term, the adhesive is fairly benign - but it will certainly leave a horrible gungy residue of adhesive after any length of time, and this is a pig to remove - especially if it's over any grilles, pads or buttons. Only spirit dissolves this, and that will almost certainly damage your plastic parts. Anything with a sticky backing is likely to do the same. I...

How do you maintain your rechargeable batteries ? I have a few for my digital camera but do not use them very often ? How do I ensure its long life?
Depends what type of battery it is. Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) need very little preventative maintenance, it is the most robust chemistry. Discharge them fully before recharge, do not 'top up'. Nickel-metal-hydride (NiMh) are slighlty less robust than NiCd (but have higher capacities), but need no discharge before charging. Your battery is most likely to be Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) or Lithium...

Finally Silver. Based on experience in the field; no statistical proof!

Not to be recommended. As a designer, I can tell you that the battery, charger and device PSU circuitry are all carefully matched, and in a small device like a mobile phone, are often pushed to the maximum to save weight, size and cost. If you only change one part of the system, it is unlikely to work properly. Imagine if you tried to drop a 6 litre engine in your 2 litre car without any other...

Well, technically yes, but it's not a good idea to try unless you know exactly what you're doing and can source a power supply that closely emulates your battery's output characteristics. Most laptops have a separate power connector for an external PSU, you would be much better off using this to supply your laptop, but be warned they are often odd voltages - mine's 19V at...

Assuming you're UK based, check ukdigitalradio.com to see if you can get DAB signals. If so, your best bet could well be a decent DAB set, although if reception is marginal, you may need to fit an external aerial. Digital radio produces beautifully clear, sharp sound and with stations stored as presets, tuning is simple.

It does look like it, although it could be a fault anywhere in the circuit handling the received IR data. Fortunately, it's fairly easy to check the data from the sensor with an oscilloscope, but if it's a tube type TV then there's very lethal voltages inside, sometimes even on the chasis, so don't tinker if you're not sure. A half-decent repair man should be able to...

Sounds like a USB error. If your pictures are on the camera's removable SD card, you can always take it and read it directly, either from an external USB card reader, or directly using a laptop if it has a built-in SD card reader. If you're using WinXP you should not need USB drivers, the camera should show up as a mass-storage device (removable drive) - if not, try the PC USB socket...

My daughters laptop gets so hot you can't set it in your lap to work because it will burn your legs, then it's shuts off. It even melted the plug that you use to get wall power. Is this something that I can get fixed, or just trash it and get a new one?
Whilst you can use laptops on your lap, it's ONLY if they are on a hard, flat surface such as a tray. Most laptops suck air up from underneath to cool the insides, blowing hot exhaust out of a side/rear port. Any surface which is not smooth and hard (i.e. human laps, rugs, cushions, bedding, carpet, towels, coats) will almost certainly block the intake grille causing the laptop to overheat...

My cell phone is a few years old and the battery used to last 5-7 days after charging. Lately the battery has been draining after about 2 days. I bought a new battery and it's still going dead after 2 days. What's the problem?
They may be a fault in the charger circuitry. If you can, (I know it's a long shot) see if you can borrow a known-good battery from a friend, let them fully charge it first. Answer to:
With new cell phone batteries, do you have to fully charge them and drain them two or three times when first using them?
It's good practice - often rechargeable cells only achieve their maximum capacity if 'exercised' initially this way. Check the manual; if it says to leave the batteries on charge for 12-16h for the first charge (example) then do it - the first few cycles are quite important.
Answer to:
Will freshly-charged rechargeable batteries lose that charge if those batteries sit unused in a drawer for two or three months?
Yes - different chemistries are worse than others for self-discharge. Poor performers include nickel chemistries, but watch out - nickel cadmium batteries can also exhibit a 'memory' effect, whereby if they are only lightly discharged before recharging, they will only appear to hold the relatively small top-up charge. For this reason nickel batteries should be fully discharged before...

The world as we know it? Until we humans a) blow the cr@p out of it over some pointless, petty squabble, b) poison it so completely only bacteria and cockroaches can survive, c) consume every single edible organism and natural resource.
Or,maybe, until a huge lump of space-debris whacks into it at near light-speed (exaggeration), or entropy turns it into a frozen hulk, or maybe when it's...

Can you put a dimmer on a halogen light?
Yes, being a largely resistive load, halogen is ideally suited to dimming. But watch out - the cold filament inrush currents are huge, so only use a dimmer rated for halogen, and stick well within the stated power rating of the dimmer or it will be ash before you can say 'pop'.

I work in a call center that deals with the hearing impaired, I, at times, find myself crawling under my desk to be well understood because the acoustics are better. How could my cubicle be better constructed for the caller to hear my voice?
Hmm.. based on your experience, maybe if it were fashioned after a giant desk? Seriously, high levels of ambient noise make comprehension difficult for normal and impaired hearers alike, so a quiet background would be good. Lots of reflections and echoes are bad too, so an anechoic lining might be good (like a recording studio). Boosting treble response of your headset may help, as high...
Answer to:
What heats faster sand or water
I haven't tested it, so this is just a hypothesis, but as water is more dense (weighs more per litre) the molecules are closer together and can therefore transfer heat energy more rapidly. Also, being a liquid, water will form convection currents which will carry away the heat from the source more readily then conduction alone, as is the case with sand. So water is the answer, I reckon....

My cell phone got wet, Just a little. I dried it out, and when I plug it in in, it shows charging. When I go to turn it on, it will take me to my main screen then shuts off. Could it be the battery?
Mmm.. I had an old Nokia that just got a little damp in it whilst it was in a bag in rainy weather, just damp air (not actual water) and it fried itself - dead. There is often no hermetic seal on the casing; water ingress can kill it, even if it's 'turned off' (still power on PCB). Try someone else's battery - if fault persists, it's your phone.

What causes a high pitch sound on the tv? It is a new Samsung digital 32" tv.
Depends whether it does it when it's on or when it's in standby. If it's during standby, it's probably the power supply in that blasted power saving pulse-skip mode, which produces a horrible jittery whining at mosquito pitch from wherever the PSU is located. Unplug it and if the whine fades and dies, there's your answer (and the solution). Otherwise, can't say for...

Can semen build up and cause medical problems if a person gets no sexual release through sex or masturbation?
If I remember correctly, excess fluid produced by the seminal gland leaks out into the urethra and is expelled along with urine, a bit like an internal overflow. I guess like all glands, if the exit becomes blocked you're going to get problems! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seminal_vesicle)

If three lamps are connected in series to a 6-volt battery, how many volts are impressed across each lamp?
Depends on the resistance of the lamps! If they were identical, and there were three of them, each lamp would see one third of the battery voltage, i.e. 2V.

What is a fuse and what is its function in a circuit?
A fuse is a deliberate 'weak link' in the electrical distribution system. In the event of a fault occurring, e.g. a short circuit, very high currents will flow which if left uninterrupted would damage the distribution system, possibly causing fire and injury. The fuse is designed to blow and interrupt this fault current safely before serious damage can occur. Also, when the fault has...

Will a 1200-watt hair dryer operate on 8 volts and 0.1 ampere? if it used for one hour, how much energy does it use?
If it drew 0.1A at 8V then it would be a 0.8Watt hair dryer, and you would need a calender to measure its effectiveness. However, if you could be bothered to use it for an hour, it would have consumed 0.0008kWh or 2.88kJ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joule)

How does an electroscope detect a electric charge on an object?
An electroscope works on the well-known principle that objects charged at the same polarity will physically repel each other, a bit like magnets of the same pole. Inside the electroscope there are elements that can be physically moved with very little force, e.g. leafs of gold film, or conductive spheres dangling on threads. These elements or connected to the terminal on the top of the...

How to check electrical conductivity of aluminun and copper using a volt meter?
Do you mean ohm-meter? That's the easiest way, and compare the resistance readings for two long, thin strips of identical length, width and thickness. If you really mean 'voltmeter' then take two identical...

What are advantages and disadvantages of ring and radial systems
Ring is more expensive to install as it takes double the cable (but not double the installation time) but it is far superior in performance, as the current to any one socket/outlet has 2 parallel paths to take, so the cable is under less load. Also if one leg of the ring fails open (loose terminal in a socket/outlet) then the remaining leg still safely provides current. Radial circuits are...

Hey there well i just wanna to know how does a AVR (automatic voltage regulator) works in a alternator. does anyone know? cheerz
It works by monitoring the alternator output voltage, and then varying the average current in the field/stator windings to maintain a constant output voltage, even when the load changes dramatically. The engine turns the rotor in the alternator, and the rotor windings rotate in a magnetic field generated by the stator winding. The stronger the stator field, the more current is induced in the...

Why when we take a neon lamp near a vandograph the lamp turns on?
The high electric field strength near the dome of the Van de Graaff generator causes the neon gas inside the lamp to ionise (become conductive) and the weak current flowing through the air, neon lamp and to earth (via you) causes the ionised neon to glow. The closer you bring the lamp to the generator, the brighter it will glow or flash.

This technical website (www.solarbuzz.com/Technologies.htm) reckons that monocrystaline is the most efficient.

If I charge a 5v NiMH battery at 5.3v, am I likely to damage the cell?
You should be charging them with a constant current source, not a voltage source. Charge (typically) at 10% of the rated Ah capacity. Terminate charge on a)time b)peak cell voltage c)cell temperature. Charging from a voltage source could drive dangerously high currents through the cell causing venting, or even rupture. Check manufacturer's data - especially if you are fast-charging them,...

Almost certainly. I'm guessing you bought the SOIC surface mount package in error - you need a SMD to through-hole DIL adaptor, it's a small printed circuit board with solder pads for the surface mount chip which then connect to pads for conventional through-hole pins, which can be used in breadboards. If you do go this way, be sure to correctly identify pin 1 of the SMD chip;...

Can the tubelights we use in our homes work on D.C.?
No they can't, not without adding an inverter which electronically converts the low voltage DC to a high voltage AC. This circuitry is included in tubelights for RVs, as mentioned. How does a tubelight workswith the help of a choke coil and starter?
If I remember the circuit properly, when cold, the choke is connected in series to the heater elements at either end of the tube. After a second or so of heating, a bi-metalic switch in the starter opens, and interrupts the pre-heat current passing through the choke, thereby inducing a...

Would a power factor of less than one(1) cause a power measuring meter, like the one on my house, to run faster or slower?
No, I'm 99% sure - they take PF into account when they design these meters, and have done so for years. In the old 'rotating disc' style meters, there's both a voltage and a current coil whose fields interact and drive the aluminium disc by induction, so the rotation is in effect the integral of V & I, recording real rather than apparent power. In the modern, electronic...

By building a front-end high impedance buffer for a start. Look at the Ohm scale - it is non linear, the high values are all crammed up at the far end. Is this a new development with the 'phone, or has it behaved properly in the past? How can I resist the voltage on my snowmobile (for my light) from 17 volts to 13 volts, DC? What can I use?
Watch out! The ballast resistor mentioned served to limit current in the ignition coil windings (I think) which is a low current load. Your headlamp may well draw 4 or 5A. A resistor to drop from 17V to 12V at 4.5A would be 1.1 ohms, but the power dissipation in that resistor would be 23W, more than enough to glow red, even for a big one.
Fixing, adjusting or replacing the voltage regulator...
Answer to:
If a device is rated for a certain number of Volts/Amps, can you use a source with the same Voltage that is higher in Amps?
If I understand your question properly, then yes. If your device is a load, say, that drew 5A at 12V then it would be fine to connect it to a power supply of 12V even if that supply was rated at 50A, as your load will only draw a maximum of 5A. The danger comes in running a 12V load from a 15V 50A supply, if the load then drew an excessive (or fault) current then it could get the full 50A and...

I apologize if this doesn't apply, but I offer this as I have done it myself by accident. When you switch over the multimeter to DC current, did you remember to shift the red lead from the voltage input to the current input? On mine, if you don't, it actually displays voltage still, even though it is on the current range. 12.5A is suspiciously like 12.5V, that's all...

I bought some NiMH batteries off eBay. They're said to be 2500 mAh. How do I know if that's true capacity? The multimeter can only measure mA, not mAh
Again CDM191 is right. To expand further, most capacity figures are 'tenth C' figures, i.e. the cell will discharge at a tenth of the stated capacity for 10 hours before running out. Don't think that the 1C capacity will be the same - if you discharged it at 1C (2.5A) it may only run for 40 minutes, not for the full hour you might expect. Power is wasted in the cell's...

It's a really bad idea to try and charge one lithium battery from another. Danger-free lithium battery charging relies on very tightly defined limits on voltage and current, controlled by specific, custom charging circuits. They are not like NiCd or NiMh cells where you could get away with a lot - if you grossly mis-treat lithium batteries they may vent or burn up violently. Google...
Answer to:
Some devices state that certain types of rechargeables should not be used. Why is this? Surely if the rechargeables have the same voltage and mAh ratings, the device won't know any difference from single-use batteries?
I have seen really bad circuit designs which rely on the internal impedance of the cells to avoid disaster. Higher performance cells tend to have lower internal impedances and can therefore deliver much higher peak currents. In the case of shoot-through in a power drive bridge, this could be the difference between life and death for the power transistors. Hopefully this isn't the case for...

In the ones I have looked at, the belt drives the beater bar which brushes up hair & dirt. Does combustion occur in the inner cone or the outer cone of the flame?
Both! In a gas/air flame, the gas and air are usually pre-mixed before the combustion nozzle. Combustion in the inner cone is often incomplete, as only the oxygen in the fuel/air mix is available, the inner cone being shielded from the nearby fresh air by the outer cone. Combustion (oxidization) is more complete in the outer cone due to the extra oxygen which is used up from the nearby fresh...

I'm a bit rusty here, but there used to be two types of cell - a cheaper amorphous silicon one (the type you see commonly in low cost solar toys) and a much more efficient, but expensive type (was it planar, or epitaxial?) which would be more useful in low light applications. If it's a modern one with electric/electronic everything, and if each module doesn't have reverse-polarity protection (cheaper option to manufacture) then it's goodbye innards. Was there a hefty spark when you connected up? Whichever way, I'm afraid this probably won't be cheap...

My battery in my 2002 yukon keeps dying. I have tested the altenator and it is good. what can it be?
The previous answers are all good. If you can borrow or buy a current-clamp ammeter you can clip this onto the ground lead with the ignition off to check for permanent or fault currents. Static drain shouldn't be more than 50mA (0.05A) or so, ideally. Use an accurate voltmeter to check the charging voltage whilst the engine's running, should be around 14-14.5V for a good battery. If...
Answer to:
How do I check my battery to see how much of a charge it has?
You can test the density of the electrolyte with a hydrometer, there are special battery ones for this, but if your battery is old and sulphated then this won't help . The best way is to check the terminal voltage with the engine off and all accessories off, then check it again with all the headlights etc. on. If the terminal voltage falls below about 11V this is a bad sign. Should be...

Can the IR sensor on a DVD player quit working?
Yes, any electronic device has the potential to fail. The IR receivers these days are almost always modules, and they are generally pretty reliable, but you may have a duff one. It's more likely to be the controller, I presume you've tried new batteries? Many cameras and camcorders are sensitive to IR sources, so if you 'look' at the controller IR window using a camera or...

How does a Galileo thermometer work?
The density of the liquid changes with ambient heat. As it becomes hotter (and less dense) it is unable to support the heavier weights, which then sink. The little glass floats on the weights are tweaked for buoyancy, so that they sink at about the temperature shown on the weight. As the liquid cools and becomes more dense, so the sunken weights gradually float up again. The current temperature...

Does anyone remember a lady who had a stall at Southsea show or similar who rescued Teddy Bears from second hand/charity shops etc, did them up. Also put them into a "room" situation or box, case. Would like to find her.
Is this the Portsmouth & Southsea show, UK? Might be able to help if so. If it is, also try the teddy bear museum in East street (I think) in Chichester.
Answer to:
Which two methods of heat transfer are possible with liquids?why?
Hmm, Physicists are going to shout at me, but I offer a) conduction and b) convection. External heat sources cause the molecules of the liquid to vibrate more vigorously. Because a liquid is dense (compared to a gas) the molecules are relatively close, so heat energy is passed from one molecule to another, just as it is in a solid.
Unlike a solid, liquids can move around, so the spot nearest...

Can you build up enough static electricity to shock someone with a pacemaker and throw them out of rhythm or stop it entirely?
Do you have someone in particular in mind? Seriously, I think probably not. Although the voltage is very high in personal static discharges, the amount of energy is low due to relatively small area of a person to store the charge on. (It's a surface effect, see 'Leyden jar') Whoever designed the pacemaker would have tried really hard to shield the electronics from external...

EE Question: Im looking for an IC or pre made board (dot board?) that is responsive to sound or frequencies (with input, 1/8 inch?) that i can solder several LEDs too (ideally several per frequency to respond too) and would light the LEDs, thanks
Not sure you're going to find a kit matching your requirements - check Velemann perhaps? Easy to knock up though. Pick a standard frequency-to-voltage IC (National, Linear etc) to produce an output voltage proportional to frequency, and run this to a linear bargraph IC, or a LED module array with the bargraph IC built in. Shout if you're still stuck.

Answer to:
What really heppens in a electric generator when the load is changed (Increased or decreased)
As I remember, the fixed stator windings in the casing generate a standing field, and the rotating coils of the rotor couple energy out of this field through the torque provided by the engine. Slip rings transfer the induced rotor current (AC) out of the generator. The field (stator) current is increased for heavier loads and decreased for lighter loads, to overcome copper losses, maintaining...

How difficult would it be to construct a solar powered fluorescent ballast? If its possible, about how long would you be able to run the lights with a full days charge?
The problem isn't in the ballast, but the continuity of supply. So long as you had plenty of storage, you could even use conventional 12V ballasts. The modern resonant high frequency designs are fairly efficient, but you could probably do a custom design based around maximal efficiency, but it would have to have a voltage comparator enable on the input so that it only ran when there was...

I have an acer laptop with vista home edition. When I scroll the curser across a page it will land on a site and go to it even tho I haven't clicked to go. Anyone know how to adjust? I can't find that certain setting.
It's definitely in there, I'm sorry I can't remember exactly what it was, but in the end I think it was in the really basic control panel/mouse settings - try click-lock, or single/double click per tap, I got it in the end so persevere! Best I can do without the laptop here...

My old amd k6-2 400mhz,512mb ram is freezing when i play music and try to surf..Could this be a corrupted registry? or is it just not enough ram..It is at max for mother board..Any tips to fix it?
Mmm, I suggest you do one, or the other! I might be wrong, but I seem to remember the K6 was AMDs response to the Intel Celeron, fairly lightweight on performance. I also remember that the K6-2 was reported to have serious floating-point problems, which won't help. 512Mb of RAM should be ample.. if you are playing music from a CD then make sure the audio cable is connected between your CD...

My kids left the ignition turned on overnight on my 2001 f350 & now it won't start. I have 2 brand new batteries & put them on charge, but will only turn over once and starts clicking. Charger says they are fully charged. Any ideas?
Lead-acid batteries really hate being left flat, the plates sulphate up in no time. Lightly sulphated batteries can be recovered sometimes by heavy usage, but badly sulphated ones have had it. The terminal voltage will look fine, but as soon as you put a load on it, the terminal voltage plummets - you can try it with a headlamp bulb and a screwdriver if you're fearless!
A good electronic...

A battery (AAA) "oozed" brown liquid in the the battery compartment of an igniter on a gas grill and now with a new battery the igniter won't work. How do I clean the "ooze" out of the battery compartment so that I can see if a new battery will work?
Not sure vinegar's a good idea, it might well dissolve the goo, but being acetic acid in it's nature, it will continue to do as much damage (maybe more) than the ooze. Try plain water, or possibly alcohol and a paper towel. The battery terminals will almost certainly have been corroded. These corrosion products can insulate the terminals from the battery so you will need to carefully...

Is it possible to transform mini laptop speakers into speakers for my mp3 player (Zen) without a computer? The speakers only have a USB cable, so is there such a thing as an adapter for them for getting AC power and/or plugging into phono?
I guess it would be technically possible, but impractical. The speakers receive the audio signal in digital format (as well as power) over the USB link. If you wanted to run these speakers from an analogue audio source (i.e phono or headphone socket) you would have to have an intermediate box that digitized the audio into USB format (simplistic) as well as providing power for the speakers from...
Answer to:
I would like to convert a 12VDC adapter made to plug into a cigarette lighter in a car to regular 9v or c or d cell batteries. Is it possible?
Yes it is possible, but the plug-in car regulators have a very limited power capability, that is to say the current that they can safely deliver without melting (or limiting) is usually low, somewhere in the order of a few hundred milliAmps. If your D cell load needed a few amps, the plug-in regulator would either limit itself, shut down or simply burn up. For any load bigger than a mobile...
Answer to:
Speaking in regards to the 'core product'...what is the difference in rechargable and non-rechargable batteries?
Both rely on a chemical reaction which takes place within the battery. The process of the chemical reaction produces a flow of electrons which passes from one terminal of the battery to the other via the load. When the load is in place, there is a path for the flow of electrons, and the reaction proceeds until the chemicals are 'used up' (in a stable state) at which point the flow of...

What are the frequently asked questions on Charge Pump IC?
I think you need to clarify this question.
Answer to:
What would cause a battery (normal alkaline Energizer AA battery) to leak?
Poor brand, reverse polarity, deep discharge, excessive temperature, attempts to recharge non-rechargeable cells - any of the above! Reverse polarity can arise not only from a battery in a pack being physically inserted backwards, but more commonly if an individual battery is of a lower capacity than the others (cheaper), or is already partially discharged then it goes flat before the others...

The battery on my portable dvd player is not keeping a charge so i was wondering if there was a way to make a new battery or to make a make shift charger to plug into the charger adapter. Here is the stats: DC in = 9v CAC Adapter:RFEA906W :CGR-H701 7.2v :
Modern portable electronics are usually powered by rechargeable Lithium ion (or Lithium Polymer) batteries. The nominal cell voltage is 3.6V, so your 7.2V pack sounds like a lithium one. DO NOT ATTEMPT YOUR OWN CHARGER. Lithium batteries are delicate, and if miss-charged, are potentially very dangerous. If you use a charger for NiCd or NiMh or Lead-acid batteries, and manage to hook it up to...
Answer to:
I have a 9v battery and i want to use a <2v LED how do i lower the voltage of my battery to <2v?
No, LEDs do not make fine resistors. They make fine LEDs, that's all. At about 1.5V forward voltage per LED, 6 LEDs in series would run from a 9V battery without a resistor.
A standard LED will run at between 1.2V and 1.8V depending on colour and the selected drive current. In your case (1 LED + 9V battery)you need to lose about 7.5V at a current of (typically) 0.02A, so the nearest...

This message pops up everytime i try to play a movie i downloaded on demonoid.com-----Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.[WHAT'S A CODEC?]
In addition to the previous response, multiple codecs are often bundled in packs, to give you a better chance of being able to play any given file. Try a Google search for 'codec packs' - examples include the Gspot pack and Matroska pack. Once installed on your PC the media player of your choice will use these filters to decode and display your file of choice. Visit the Microsoft site...

Type of media that might be most suitable for promoting tomato soup
Telly. Most soup-eaters watch telly, and until 'smell-o-vision' is developed, visual representation of the product is most likely to promote demand. Is this a serious question??
