How long was the Titanic? And how long did it take to make it?
Titanic is reported as being 882 feet 9 inches (269.1 m) long.
Her hull was laid (the beginning of construction) on March 31, 1909. The bare ship was launched on May 31, 1911. It took about another year to outfit the ship, and she was completed on March 31, 1912. She was tested and declared seaworthy on April 2, 1912 - 8 days before she sailed out.
So all up, it took about 2 years to...

Unblock your sim? Have you already gone past the stage of the PUK code (i.e. putting it in wrong too many times?)
If you've used all the PUK code attempts, then your card is permanently blocked. I don't know of any way to unblock a SIM after that.
If you still have PUK code attempts, ring your service provider and get them to give you the PUK code - your service provider should...

If we are God's children, why do we die?
According to the bible, before Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate the fruit from the 'tree of knowledge of good and evil', they were immortal.
The bible says when Adam and Eve did that, sin and death entered the world. There are a few debates on the meaning of this. Some scholars believe physical death is referred to here, but at the same time others believe that it extends to...

In parts of Australia they can be known as 'Cossies', I believe an abbreviation of the word 'Costume' in 'Swimming Costume'.
I've heard them called 'togs', and for the brief style men's swimsuit, they are often referred to as 'DTs' - an abbreviation for 'Dick Togs'.

Not so much a movie, but a trilogy of movies - I really did not like the ending to the Matrix trilogy at all. But then again, I never really understood it until recently, and so it never made sense to me.
Still, even now that I do understand, I still don't like the ending.

In sociology a minority is a group that is not a part of the 'hegemony' (ruling majority), and is made up of a small proportion of society's members. Usually minorities are classed as such because they are somehow at odds with the hegemony and its ruling viewpoints.

Can a girl feel when a guy pre-cums during sex?
I wouldn't think so. Pre-cum is just a lubricating fluid that oozes out of the urethra. It can (and usually does) contain sperm, which means there is a chance you can get pregnant from it.
The quantity of pre-cum that is excreted would not be enough for a woman to feel inside her vagina.

I was once, accidentally.
I was in a video rental shop with my wife, and we were both looking through the shelves in different parts of the store.

If our planet is inhabited with creatures made by God...is it possible that there's another planet inhabited with creatures made by the Devil?
According to the bible, Satan does not have the power of creation that God has. The bible says that Satan is a created being, and does not have the nature, power or abilities God has.
So I would have to say absolutely not. If God is real and he created us, could there be life on other planets that God created? I see no reason why not - he has the ability, and just because we don't know...

We do indeed look at each other, but it seems our society view staring as impolite, or an invasion of privacy.
At the same time, men do look at women in a particular way. Whether it is with sexual intentions (i.e. mentally undressing) or appreciating a woman's beauty, we do tend to let our gazes linger.

Psychologically I think it would depend on the situation and how the people involved react and handle the death.

The biggest flaw I see in Capitalism, in my humble opinion, is us. The people in the system.

Well - the bible does tell believers to judge the actions (not the heart) of other believers, and offer correction and reproof from the scriptures to bring a sinner back.

The first thing to state is that according to the Bible, God is one being. A single, complete, unitary being.

Honestly, you don't want to tell her. That's the long and short of it. If she is indeed your friend she has to respect that. You don't need to make excuses for yourself.

To answer the question: you could make it all wheel drive without losing horsepower, but the modification would be extremely difficult. It has nothing to do with the engine, nor the amount of power the engine creates. It's all to do with the transmission and suspension.
First you need to find an all wheel drive gearbox that will fit in the car and mate up to your engine. This includes...

If by 'blower' you are referring to a supercharger, then yes, you most definitely can. There are a few examples of 'turbo-supercharged' cars, mainly aftermarket tune-ups.
In this situation you can run bigger turbos for more boost, and use the supercharger to remove the engine lag that comes from the high boost-threshold (when the turbos start boosting) of such a design.

I know the answer, but I want to see how many other people do. What is the purpose of a spoiler(wing)? I'll give you a hint, its not for show.
A functional wing (front or rear)is basically an upside-down aerofoil (wing) that causes lift force downwards, as opposed to an upward lifting force on plane wings.
Its main purpose is to keep the vehicle stable at high speeds by creating 'downforce' - downward force caused by air flowing over it - to better anchor the car to the ground.
The more downforce a wing generates, the...

When you are the lead car approaching the stop line, usually the law requires you to come to a complete stop at or behind the line for a minimum period of time (maybe 1 or 2 seconds), but it has to be a complete stop. Counterfeiting a car from scratch (i.e. building your own identical copy) would be impossible - you're building a whole car, not just printing a note or pressing a coin. Answer to:
While driving, when is better to slow down by applying brakes vs. shifting into a lower gear?
Engine braking from downshifting isn't nearly as efficient as using the brakes. Brakes work on all 4 wheels, usually have ABS these days, and can slow you down much more rapidly than engine braking.
Where engine braking becomes useful is maintaining a lower speed and minimising the use of brakes on downhill slopes - hence part of the reason semi trucks have jake-brakes (exhaust brakes)....

The only real damage that could happen might be to the seals and O-rings if the power-steering fluid was chemically different to the brake fluid. Hmm... I've had a bit to do with carbon fibre, but I'm not an expert. However...
Carbon fibre (CF) is very very strong, very rigid and reasonably resilient to blows. CF does not bend or buckle like metal. It has a certain amount of flex to it, but when it 'fails' or breaks, it shatters.
Most cars made solely of CF use a design known as a 'tub' chassis, where...
Answer to:
Is a low compression engine better for forced induction that high compression?
Depends on how much boost you're putting into the engine.
The big issue here is managing the amount of internal pressure within the cylinders, by making sure it's not going to damage the engine whilst still making the most power possible. Too much pressure can cause catastrophic failure where you literally blow the head off the engine. Hence why Top Fuel drag cars have big straps...

Well there's no 'absolute' logic to why I believe in God, nor is my belief in God 'logical'. However:
I can offer *my* logic (flawed and limited as it is) as to why I believe in God.

Do the "classic cars" of the 50's and 60's look better than modern cars?
Some do. Mustangs for example - so much so that the new designs are retro, based on the late 60's versions.
There are some timeless car designs out there. I'll never forget when I was about 12 years old I saw a Corvette Stingray - here in Australia, they are rare, but it just stood out from everything else around it.
There are a lot of cars from that era, from around the world,...

If money were to vanish overnight, would we survive? I think so. It would be hard because we are so dependent upon it, but we would survive.

When it obscures truth, and mocks common sense. Other than that I usually like to laugh at it.

Do you think smoking marijuana is a sin?
Since you mention the word 'sin', which is a Judeo-Christian word, I'll approach it from that angle.
Smoking marijuana on its own is nothing - just another activity, another consumption. The bible doesn't mention marijuana.
However, if you're looking to define it in regards to sin, you'd need to look up what is classed as a sin.

Is it auto or manual?
Either way it probably has to do with the clutch.
In a manual it can mean the clutch is wearing out and beginning to slip against the flywheel.
In an automatic it can mean that the clutch-packs that engage the gears are worn and slipping against the gears.
In an auto it could be other things - for example, low fluid or a blockage in the hydraulic lines may be...

Moral and legal issues aside: unless the version of Windows you have now is identical to the version of Windows the serial number was created for - you can't.
Each version and 'trim level' of Windows has its own serial numbers. For example, an installation of XP home edition will not accept a serial for XP corporate edition.

Definitely a citation. Creeping up around 60-65mph, maybe a slap on the wrist - if its the first time.
But 88mph in a 55 zone is deliberate. You don't push 33mph (that's over 50kph over the limit) by accident or ignorance. That's deliberate. There is no way I would let a clown like that off for something that bad. Whether or not speed kills is irrelevant: the law is the...

Man sinned. Man broke fellowship with God, became subject to death through sin, and ended up cursed. The world around became...

It depends on the theory. I fully support the idea that life has the ability to evolve and adapt, as we have seen much evidence to prove this. Intelligent design (the bible's account of life) states that each creature was created from scratch, as is. There was no evolution to make the...

What would happen if we cut down all the trees? (in terms of oxygen)
Actually the majority of the earth's oxygen is generated by marine organisms - plankton and algae and such.
If we cut down all trees it would certainly put a dint in the regeneration of oxygen through photosynthesis, but it wouldn't kill us.
It would definitely be a sad place to live, though... no trees... *sniff, sniff* I think I'm gonna go cry now.

Emerald green eyes on someone with dark red hair just... I don't know, just does it for me, somehow. There's this sparkling quality about emerald green eyes, and red hair sets it off.

Based on the complexity to the Harry Potter series to children, do you think it really should be considered for children?
Everybody will glean from the book at different levels. As long as it has a simple enough premise to satisfy the minds of kids, it would be okay. They will miss some of the deeper threads of the story, but that's no problem.
Give the same book to a teenager and they'll pick up more out of it than a child, but probably still miss some of the things. Still no problem.

Which is better as a home PC: a laptop or desktop?
We have both, but I'd still take a laptop. If you invest in a wireless router and an external network hard drive, you can pretty much sit anywhere in the house and use your computer. The network hard drive connects to the router - which you can access through the WiFi in your laptop. Instant extra storage space, portability... and the fact that laptops are becoming a lot more affordable....

What effect does being in space have on the human body?
Athrael's answer is good.
One thing that happens when pressure drops too far is that your blood can boil (i.e. vaporise). Our blood pumps around our body under pressure that is actually higher than the air pressure around us. The pressure around us helps keep it in - just as it does with any liquid.
Your body fluids would either freeze or boil off.
The lack of pressure could...

Technically, all things being equal yes. Firstly the phone itself is only taking a small charge (somewhere between 3 and 7 volts DC) from the charger.
The only risk of high voltage electrocution comes from the powerpack itself and the wall plug. Anything past that is only going to be low voltage.
For the phone or charger to electrocute you means that there is a serious (and dangerous)...

It depends on what speed they are using - miles per hour or nautical miles per hour (knots). At cruising altitude (35,000 feet and above), 450knots would be reasonable. Most commercial aircraft travel at about 0.85 - 0.9 Mach at cruising speed. Mach 1 at these altitudes is about 570knots, so 450knots is about 0.79 Mach. i was 2 days into my pill and i had unprotected sex can i be pregnant?
Since most pill programs start on the first day of your period or the first day after your period, that tells me that you either had sex during your period or 2 days after it finished. Correct me if I'm wrong.
The first few days are not the most fertile, as ovulation (the release of the egg) doesn't occur until somewhere mid-way through the cycle (the average is day 14, but obviously it...

My man looks at porn about twice a week. I don't like it. Do I have a problem, or does he?
At the same time, though, have you spoken to him about your concern, and is he willing to do anything about it for you?
The issue here, I feel, is not porn, but your relationship. Firstly just because he looks at porn, doesn't mean he doesn't love or desire you. Men are very visual creatures, and very high sex drives.
I disagree with synblynd, though - men don't necessarily NEED a...

Answer to:
Ever since I found out that I'm pregnant, I have dreams that my husband cheats on me and then leaves me. Does this mean anything?
I think one fear of pregnant women is being abandoned in their time of need. I've heard of many pregnant women who were afraid their spouse wouldn't love them anymore once their belly began to grow, or that their spouses wouldn't want to be around once the child was born. I can understand the fear - being pregnant and having young children is a very vulnerable time for women.
Unless you...
Answer to:
How possible is it to become pregnant without having actual intercourse? I've read stuff on the Internet that says it's possible. I'm worried cause I sat close to where my boyfriend came one night and period is a day late. Answers?
Pregnancy can only occur when sperm enters into the vagina and the uterus, and finds an egg to fertilise. Anything that allows sperm into your vagina can get you pregnant. Fingers, lips or tongues (or any other objects) that have semen on them, if brought into contact with the vulva or vagina, have the potential to allow sperm to enter your reproductive system. So yes, you can get pregnant...

I'm 25 years old and don't believe in premartial sex. However, my boyfriend of 6 months and I do play around with oral sex and masturbation. I am on the pill due to ovarian cysts. What are the changes of becoming pregnant like this?
Apart from the issues raised in tjatherton's answer, you need to be more specific.
Pregnancy occurs when sperm enters into the female's reproductive system (through the vagina) and fertilises an egg.
The only risk of pregnancy with any sexual activity is if you allow sperm to enter your vagina. This can be from full intercourse with the male ejaculating inside you, to even allowing it to...

I've heard many people say that English is the hardest language to master. I believe it is to do with our syntax (the way our sentence structure is set up) and the fact that we have so many homophones (words that sound the same but mean different things).

Answer to:
if i had unprotected sex about 5-7 days after my period ended, what are the chances of me being pregnant?
There is a chance, and it depends on your particular cycle. Sperm can live in a woman's body for up to 72 hours (3 days) or so. That means that up until about day 10 - 11 in your cycle you will have sperm in your system. If you ovulate in those three days, then there is a very good chance you will conceive. The average day for ovulation is around the 14 day mark (obviously it varies from woman...

Does the stress of losing a child often break up couples?
It depends on how the couple take the death, and how their relationship is. If one of the partners is greatly devastated and handles the loss poorly, then it can cause a rift that breaks the relationship. If there were other tensions and issues that were already driving a wedge in, then it can be the straw that breaks the camel's back - as sad as that sounds. We lost a child several years ago,...

I downloaded a game that was a cd rip. I installed it into my computer and when I try to play the game it asks me for the disk. There is an autorun icon but it will not work. How will I be able to play the game
Most modern games have copy-protection built into the CD's and DVD's. It is in a special portion of the disc that few burners can write to, and hence it is not copied across with the rest of the information. These copy protections deliberately do exactly what you're describing. There are ways around it, but since it's illegal I am not going to list them here. Better to do the honest thing and...

I gave birth to my child 24 weeks into the pregnancy. He was born alive and died 9 hours later when my fiancé decided to cut off his life support. It happened 2 years ago. Why can't I get over it?
I can understand why you'd be having a hard time. We lost our first child an hour after she was born, and it is a very hard thing to deal with. I think what would make it harder is the fact that your fiance turned off the life support... "What if we hadn't?" I truly do sympathise with your pain. Like Sunblynd said, there is no easy answer to this question. Losing a child is something...

I have been on the pill for a year and bit now and i noramlly get my period on the third day of taking the placebo pills (this would be a thursday) and it's noramlly in the afternoon. Last month i got it on the thursday but not till late in the eveni
A few hours here and there is nothing to worry about. If you got your period on time and you have been taking your pills properly, then there is only a very remote chance of becoming pregnant. There are many other things that can affect the timing of your period - stress, ill health, etc. If you're really concerned about being pregnant, though, see your GP.
Answer to:
I have been on the pill for six months. My boyfriend and I had unprotected sex several times about one week before my period, which I got on time. Is there a chance I could be pregnant from those sexual encounters even though I menstruated as expected?
If you are taking your pill properly, and not skipping or forgetting, then the chance of being pregnant is very low - less than 0.5%. So I would have to say that you are not likely to be pregnant. However if you are really concerned, get a test done - at least that way you'll know.
If you're really concerned about getting pregnant, and even with the pill don't feel secure, I'd recommend...

I had sex with my boyfriend, and 3 days later I got my period, regularly (Heavy and all). He just admitted to me that 4 days before I got my period, when we had sex that he "came" inside me. Should I be worried?
There is 'a' chance that you can fall pregnant, but if you got your period I wouldn't be too worried. Sperm can live inside the woman's reproductive system for up to 72 hours - after that it dies. The sperm must meet up with an egg and conceive for you to fall pregnant. If you got your period, it is a fair indicator that this didn't happen. It is remotely possible for you to have a period and...

If Christianity is based on faith, then what do you have faith in?
Christ.
That's the one word answer.
Christianity is about a God who created the universe, then created us. Through our own free will we rebelled against him and entered into sin. This sin allowed death and disease to enter into existence, and at the same time broke the relationship we had with God.
So for several thousand years people tried their best to get back to God through...

Do Christians believe that God rewards or punishes me for my actions or because enough believers prayed for something good or bad to happen to me? If so how do I reconcile this with "free will"?
Most Christians do believe that God will react to prayer. These days I believe that God does not so much rule the physical universe - as in cause all things to happen. It is a combination of satan and his minions, and just nature itself. We bear natural and spiritual consequences for our actions (both good and bad), but these are automatic - based on the laws of the natural world and the...

Adam is right - prevention is much better than cure. The main way to stop stuff flying forward is to either stow it somewhere or secure it. If it's just small cabin stuff you're talking about, then you need to keep the stuff where it's not going to be able to fly forward - map pockets, bags or baskets or other recesses where you can stow it.

This question has been asked and answered in other areas, but I'll post an answer here for you.

He may have God in his heart, but each person reacts differently to things around them. Has he been hurt by a church before? This may explain part of his hesitation.
Going to church is not a requisite for salvation. Salvation is a free gift that is given by grace and accepted by faith - the faith that God gives us. It is our choice to accept that gift, but we are enabled by God to make that...

No one can really answer on their behalf, and it really isn't recorded in the bible.

Depends on your definition of 'mystic'. My definition of 'mystic' is based on the bible - which describes the occult - magic or sorcery, divination, clarivoyance or clairaudience, fortune telling, etc. Nothing more - and it is not a positive definition. From the Christian point of view the occult is satanic and demonic, and has no connection whatsoever with God or Jesus.

For all intents and purposes it is believed that he lived in Israel as a Jew. He would have been taught the Torah in the Synagogues, and taken after Joseph's trade. How likely am I to get pregnant eleven days before my period?
Depending on when you ovulate in your cycle, it is quite likely. The first part of your cycle involves building up the lining of the uterus, and somewhere *around* the halfway point of your cycle (it differs with individual women) you will ovulate. Menstruation is the body's reaction to not receiving a fertilised egg, where the uterus sheds its lining. Once this is complete, the cycle...

When I push the overdrive button of my 2003 Toyota Echo I get a light on my dashboard that says, "O/D off". Shouldn't pushing the button turn the overdrive on?
No. What happens is this. When the O/D button is out and the light off, the transmission will go through all the gears, including overdrive.
The O/D button is not actually to engage it, but to lock it out. It is used for overtaking, climbing hills or towing. It means that when the button is pressed and the "O/D Off" light comes on, the car will not go into top gear.

If you are talking physically travelling (i.e. taking a trip) at Faster Than Light speed: not at our current technology level.
With the limitations of Einsteinian physics, it is not possible to project a physical mass at light speed or beyond. (This is operating under the basic assumption that the physics are true, and not just theory).
The only way to move at FTL speed, then, would be to...

If you are in the southern hemisphere, you can use the Southern Cross and the Two Pointers. If you draw a line lengthwise along the SC, and another line perpendicular between the stars of the TP, where the two lines meet is the south celestial pole. As far as I know, this is constant.

What does the term riceboy or ricer mean? Where did it originate?
I believe the original term 'riceburner' was given to Asian (specifically Japanese) cars and bikes because they used small engines, as opposed to great, 8 cylindered iron lumps like the western domestic cars. I think the name was created from the derogatory jibe that they ran on rice, hence 'rice-burners'. Over the years it has been abbreviated to just 'ricer', or...

Is Quixtar a pyramid scheme?
Depending on the laws, there is another issue that can identify a 'pyramid' scheme.
I believe that some governments state that if in a 'multi level marketing' business, a person cannot earn more than the person above them, then it is illegal. I think this has something to do with the structure and the way money is allocated and earned. In Amway/Quixtar/A2K, it is possible...

If the Bible tells me not to lust, then how am I expected to eventually marry a woman if I can't get attracted to her?
There is a difference between desire (or attraction) and lust. I desire my wife, but in the strictest sense I do not lust after her.
The attitude of lust is really an entity in itself, and involves greed, covetousness, selfishness and other things. Notice how Jesus doesn't just refer to lust as sexual desire. Lusting after the flesh, or things of this world, was just as pertinent in...

How do you interpret Gen 18:20-33 if God doesn't make deals?
I don't think this is a case of God making deals. I believe it is this transcript is the first recorded occurrence of intercession.

Is religion used to control people?
It can be. A classic example is the medieval church and Christendom. The medieval Catholic church is recorded as using its position and its religion to exert authority on the governments/monarchies of the day. Another contemporary example can be seen in extremist Muslims (the kind the western world call terrorists).
If you think about it, the Crusaders of the middle east were almost...

What exactly is the functional difference between the Aaronic priestly line and the Levitical priestly line?
When God instituted the Covenant of the Law (the Law of Moses), he set aside one tribe from the twelve to serve him as attendants. This was the tribe of Levi.
Unlike the other 11 tribes, they were given no inheritance in the promised land. Instead, their inheritance was the Tithes given by the other tribes.
The Levites were chosen to be attendants and servants at the Tabernacle (and later...

Aunty Em's answer is spot on.
What most people don't realise is that the physical violence is just the external symptom of a much deeper problem. Abusive relationships are not just based on physical violence.

"Draw strength"? How does one draw strength from a child?

The bible is the Christian's guidebook to life. We form our theology and beliefs out of what is written in this bible. Why? Because we are told that the scriptures are God's Word given to us.
There is NOWHERE in the bible that even allows for reincarnation. In fact, the bible has very specific texts within it that negate any possibility of reincarnation. So how can I say no?

Why did Judas Iscariot betray Jesus?
There are several theories as to why Judas betrayed Jesus. The most widely accepted one is this:
Like most Israelites, Judas was expecting the Messiah to come in power as an earthly king. At that time, they hoped that he would come and overthrow the Romans and regain control of their land, and set up his earthly kingdom over them. (Kind of like a super King David). I believe that some of the...

To answer the question, there is nowhere that records a child going to 'hell', and nowhere that says in 25 words or less that they are exempt. There is a lot of conjecture going around with the issue of 'free choice', and how early in childhood that becomes binding upon them.

From biblical evidence I would have to say yes, however there are conditions.
First of all you must be operating with the power of God's spirit, and not just on your own. I cite the seven sons of Sceva from the bible. They tried to out a demon 'in the name of Jesus, who Paul preaches'. In other words, they didn't know Jesus, and weren't operating under the right...

My first thought would be to get a copy of the relevant censorship standards. As long as you tailor your writing to not breach any of the standards, there is nothing stopping you from writing erotic horror fiction.

Why would a mother apparently not care about her children's happiness and welfare?
Another time a mother's love may seem to wane is if she is going through personal problems that are affecting her quality of life - depression, stress, anxiety, hurt - these are all things that can bring people down and make them appear apathetic (uncaring). These things can lead to poor self image and lack of self pride, which will also contribute to apathetic behaviour.

The oxygen mask covers but one of many problems you would encounter.
Firstly you'd have to reach space. The highest altitude reached by an F-15 was 102,900 feet by an F-15A, named 'Streak Eagle'. It was stripped of all paint and unnecessary weight, and took off with just 2,600lbs of fuel on board. The jet was bolted to the runway by a chain, and run up to full afterburner. An...

Most remote keyless entry systems in cars use radio waves. The transmitter uses a specific frequency, which is different for each car. Most modern ones have some form of encryption in them as well, or a particular code.

Do any manual transmission cars have cruise control?
Yes, there a quite a few manual cars with cruise control. In Australia, Subaru were one of the first mainstream manufacterers I know of that had cruise control in manual cars.
The main difference is that the cruise control usually disengages when the clutch is pushed in, as well as when braking.

Some Apostolics were angry at me for more than a day, even though the Bible says, "Don't let the Sun go down on your anger". Why don't they follow that verse, even though they're more rigid on following what the Bible says?
Unfortunately that's something that only they can answer. None of us can answer on their behalf.
The question I'd ask is: were they truly angry at you for that time, or did it just appear so? If you're on speaking terms with them, I'd ask. The reasoning behind this is that if they operate by biblical principles, they should have forgiven whatever upset them, and...

What do I do if the check engine light comes on?
Some cars have a procedure that if you follow, the light will flash out a code. If you have the list of the codes and their meanings, you can decipher the problem yourself.
The other way of diagnosing the problem is to hook up the appropriate computer handset to the engine and let it diagnose the problem - this is usually a job for a mechanic/technician.
If you are driving and the engine...

Where can I find an aluminum block and head motor from a front wheel drive? If not from a front wheel drive, where can I find an aluminum block and head that will bolt up to a transaxle that can be made to put out 300 HP?
2.0L MIVEC V6 from a Mitsubishi FTO? 200HP stock.
3.0L MIVEC V6 from a Mitsubishi GTO (3000GT)? Over 270HP stock.
They're just two suggestions off the top of my head. To reach 300HP, are you going to use turbo? Try the 2.0L engine from a Nissan Pulsar (Sunny) GTI-R. You could get the 2L turbo 4cyl from the turbo Toyota MR-2. You could get the 2L turbo 4 from a Lancer EVO or GALANT VR4....

What are some good ways to save wear on the clutch of a manual transmission car?
First of all - and most obvious - don't ride the clutch.
When you're not using it, take your foot off completely and put it on the footrest.
When taking off, do so with just enough revs to get moving. Overrevving the engine on take-off will wear out your clutch quicker.
"Racing" techniques such as sidestepping the clutch or flat shifting will not do your clutch any...

Do hybrids or electric-powered cars have as much power as gas-powered cars?
It depends on the car, and the mechanicals used. Electric motors have a lot of torque for their size, so they can give the car a kick.
Most hybrids I know of at the moment use a small gasoline engine augmented by an electric motor. The gasoline engine is used for driving the car and charging the battery that powers the motor.
The electric motor can run with the gasoline engine off, or in...

If we switch to hydrogen-fueled cars, where will all the hydrogen come from?
One of the main ways of creating hydrogen would be to use electrolysis. In this example, water is the simplest source of hydrogen (H2O). A positive and negative electrode are placed in opposite ends of a pool of water. A strong electric current is passed through, which basically splits the Hydrogen and Oxygen apart. The positively charged Hydrogen atoms will gather at the negative side, and the...

Do boats have brakes?
Another technique for stopping a smaller boat is called broadsiding, used to stop from high speed. The helmsperson cuts throttle to idle and quickly turns full lock in either direction. The result is that the boat basically flicks 90 degrees to present the side of its hull to the direction of movement. I learnt this on a floodboat rescue course - the boat stopped very quickly. Make sure the...

Why must the seatbacks be returned to an upright and locked position for take-offs and landings?
In the event of a crash/hard landing, passengers are going to be thrown around. If seats are reclined or tray-tables out, then they are a collision hazard for passengers. By preparing in advance, it saves people having to scramble to get into the correct positions in the event of a hard landing/crash.
I think it is a psychological thing too - to tend to wake up and be more alert once the...

Why don't planes provide emergency parachutes as well as lifejackets?
These days a certain amount of training and competency is required to 'skydive', or use a parachute. The danger to 'incompetent' or inexperienced passengers jumping would be equal to the danger of staying with the plane.
A better suggestion would be to do what they do with some ultralight aircraft - install parachutes to the plane's cabin itself, so if something...

Roundabouts really serve two main functions. The first is as a traffic calming device. Because the straight length of the road (in all directions) is broken by a curve, it forces you to slow down. Second, because of the road rules regarding giving-way, it may require you to stop altogether.
Secondly, it acts as a traffic control device. By their very design they make it necessary for a...

Alatea's answer is spot on in its interpretation of the Greek. The equivalent word in Hebrew is Ra`ah, which has very similar meaning.

Does God punish anger?
Anger in itself is not so much a sin as a human strength and weakness. It's why we're angry (the attitudes of our hearts) and what we do with it (our actions) that determine whether it is wrong or right.

One of the core points of contention is the first chapter of John's gospel. The reason this is such a big issue is because both faiths are dependent upon the doctrine that comes out of this passage. In particular, the translation of verse 1 is different between the mainstream christian bibles and the NWT bible.
The mainstream versions translate v1 roughly as: "In the beginning was...

You need to provide more information to give a proper diagnosis. First suspect is the simplest - worn or mis-adjusted clutch. There's not much more in the drivetrain that can slip.
If the clutch is out of adjustment, then it may not be able to grip the friction plates properly. If it is worn, then the material beneath the friction pad on the clutch doesn't grip like the pad...
Answer to:
My automatic transmission is "slipping." What could be the cause and remedy?
There are a couple of reasons why this could be.
The first and simplest problem that would cause this is low fluid level. The transmission uses its fluid for many things - all vital to its correct operation. Firstly the torque converter usually draws its fluid from the transmission. Low fluid levels can stop the torque converter from operating correctly.
The gears themselves are engaged...

What is the difference between turbocharged and supercharged engines?
There are several different types of each. Both operate by driving a compressor to push pressurised air into the cylinders.
Pushing pressurised air in means that more air is being taken into the cylinder than a naturally aspirated engine. That means more fuel can be injected, and the resulting bang is bigger. Simple result: much more power out of the engine.
Superchargers are usually...

The answer to this depends on what speed you are talking about. Aircraft work in airspeed - the speed of the aircraft in relation to the air around it. Ground speed is a function of these two things.

Directly proportional means that as value 1 (x) increases, so does value 2 (y), at a set ratio.

Recently I visited BOSTON in America, I purchased some 3 games, however, none of these work on my British Playstation. Can I ask why, if answer unknown answer, plse advise contact details, surely games should be able to be used worldwide.
PS2 games work in the same way as DVDs and older VHS. They are region coded.
This means that the games have a different system coding on the disc, for different regions of the world. Consoles and DVD players are also region specific. Yours (A UK version) would only play Region 2 games and DVDs, as Region 2 is specific to the UK. The US is Region 1. The two are incompatible unless you have a...

Travelling at what speed would be considered supersonic/transonic?
Transonic is defined (as far as I remember) as the region between Mach 0.8 and Mach 1.2. Anything below Mach 0.8 is subsonic, and anything above Mach 1.2 is supersonic.

Are the luggage compartments of planes pressurized?
As a bit of useless trivia: most commercial aircraft cruise between 34,000 feet and 45,000 feet. Their pressurisations systems are designed to keep cabin pressure at level equivalent to the air pressure at 5,000 to 8,000 feet above sea level. This altitude is as high as humans can endure without the first stages of hypoxia affecting them. The first thing affected by decreased oxygen is,...

My car shakes when I downshift or brake. What could be wrong?
Are you braking when you downshift? If so, then the problem is entirely in the brakes, and would most probably involve a warped disc. (I'm guessing your car has at least front disc brakes).
Hard braking or continual braking will heat your rotors (or discs) up to a point where they will actually deform. Imagine a buckled pushbike wheel - similar effect.
Once the brake is warped,...

What career path must one follow to become a captain of a cruise ship, cargo ship, or oil tanker?
Captaincy is not a scholastic qualification. It is a position earned by qualifications and experience.
The first thing you would want to do is get your helmsman accreditation, (or boatswain or whatever you want to call it). Most licensing authorities have different grades of licensing for different classes of boats/ships.
Once you have this, you would have to secure employment as a...

What does PTO stand for and what is its function? I saw this in a 1994 Mack dump truck.
Power Take Off is a mechanical system that allows you to drive a piece of auxiliary equipment from the gearbox of the carrier vehicle. Tractors have PTO shafts out the back to drive machinery. UNIMOG trucks have winches powered by PTO. Some cement trucks drive their mixer barrels with PTO. In a dump truck, I'd say the PTO would drive a hydraulic pump to power the piston that lifts and...

Is it true that some technological advances such as traction control have made cars perform worse than they used to?
There are many different answers to this question, some based on fact, some based on opinion. This is but one take.
I assume you are also talking about aids like Vehicle Stability Control, Anti Lock Brakes, etc. My take on it is this: stability aids will extend the performance capabilities of a car past the driver's natural ability. That means it will hold together better compared to a...

Answer to:
What is a centre differential?
A differential located in the gearbox or transfer case of constant AWD or 4WD cars. The centre differential is connected to the front and rear propellor shafts and splits the power from the gearbox to the front/rear axles.
Some constant AWD/4WD vehicles have advanced versions of the centre differential which can vary power split from front to back, and prevent loss of traction from both...
Answer to:
What is a constant?
When used with AWD or 4WD systems, the term 'Constant' means any system that is designed to constantly deliver power to both sets of driving wheels.
The most common method of achieving this is through a third differential that sits in either the gearbox (AWD) or transfer case (4WD) and is connected to the front and rear propellor shafts.
Other variants to the centre diff may...
Answer to:
What is an on demand?
On demand is the term used for AWD or 4WD systems that engage automatically as needed. Usually these systems run in 2WD, and activate when wheelspin is detected. Off-road capable 4WDs often have a driver setting to lock this in full 4WD when needed.
The systems used in On Demand vary, but the most common ones use viscous couplings, or mechanical or electromagnetic clutches
Answer to:
What is an all-wheel drive?
A system used mainly in on-road cars to drive all four wheels, rather than just the front or back. All Wheel Drive is not generally designed to be used off road, but rather as a traction enhancement in slippery driving conditions.
All Wheel Drive comes in one of two main forms: constant or on demand.
On demand systems usually operate in 2WD, and engage AWD when needed. There are many...

What were the first armies like and how did they originate?
The very first armies were nothing more than bands of militia or tribal warriors who gathered together to fight. The main threat to these peoples would be raiders or neighbouring tribes invading their lands.
As civilisations grew, the need for defense spawned the development of dedicated fighting forces, and so armies were developed. It is quite interesting to read the history of ancient...

If a modern army was transported back in time to 1939, how long would it take to win World War 2?
First of all, it depends on the size of the army. (Yes, size does matter!)
However, a lot has changed in 66 years. Tactics, weaponry, and technology have all evolved to a point that would totally overwhelm the equivalent 1939 army.
First of all, does the modern army get to take all of its modern equipment with it? Does that mean it gets a supply of its modern weapons? Here are some things...

How can an M1A2 run on three fuels: gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel?
To answer the HOW question:
Gas turbines work differently to piston engines. Their fuel and ignitions systems are designed differently.
Firstly, since turbines BURN fuel as opposed to detonating it (in the case of a piston engine), then you can run any combustible liquid through a turbine, from paraffin oils to methanol.
Turbines are largely governed by RPM and exhaust gas temperature....

Is there a way to make a Wankel engine with multiple cylinders? I understand the basic design of rotary engines, but could it be made more powerful in ways other than simply increasing the displacement?
There is indeed. As jervinator said, if you add another rotor, you are literally doubling the number of 'cylinders' the engine has. Hence, all Mazda rotaries these days are a minimum of two rotors (A 13B uses 2 x 654cc for a total of 1.3L)
Mazda also made the 20B, which was a THREE rotor (the same 654cc rotors as the 13B) engine.
The biggest rotary engine I know of is the...
Answer to:
If I rev my engine past its rated horsepower peak, why doesn't it produce more power?
Your peak power is exactly that. Why does torque drop off after a certain amount of revs. Basically it all has to do with engine efficiency.
As the engine speeds up, the duration of each cycle gets shorter. This means less time in a cycle. Since air is a compressible fluid, it takes time to fill a gap or evacuate a high pressure area. As the engine speeds up, there is less time for the...

Cleaning your windscreen regularly will prevent buildup of oil and other contaminants that are thrown up from the road or other vehicles around you....

In rallying, one style of recording pace notes is a 'tulip diagram'. Each intersection is marked by its own diagram and distance from the last intersection.

Apparently it was named after the Tulip rally in Holland, where the technique is first recorded as being used.

Check with a solicitor or your local council for laws regarding this, but my thoughts are thus:
Did you sign a contract with the original price on it? If so, then the dealer CANNOT change the price - that contract is a legally binding document and if they breach that, they are criminally liable. If they change the price then you have the right to refuse the car and should be able to cancel...

The heater and the heater fan are two separate things. Unfortunately probably not - at least not under propellor power. The physics involved with propellors basically forbid it.

PS2 games are in DVD format, so can I use them on my DVD player or PC with a DVD drive?
You CAN physically (but I don't know about legally) play PS2 games on a DVD-ROM equipped computer. If you have some of the newer, dual-layer game DVDs, such as Gran Turismo 4, you will need a dual layer DVD-ROM
To do this, you need a program called an 'emulator'. When you run this program, it simulates the PS2 operating system on your computer. Usually it will have a basic...

How do you know if your engine rings are bad?
There are two types of rings on a piston. The compression rings stop the air and fuel from leaking down the sides of the pistons and into the engine block. The oil-control rings stop oil from being drawn up into the combustion chamber.
If your compression rings are shot, then you will find your performance will suffer, and your mpg will drop as well. Your engine may run rough, and when you...
Answer to:
If Levites were the only race allowed to hold the Aaronic Priesthood, and Christ was High Priest in the Melchezidic order, how did the Priesthood get bestowed onto Mormons?
This question would be answered differently depending on whether the writer were LDS or mainstream Christian. The Latter Day Saints (LDS) are taught that the priesthoods were bestowed upon Joseph Smith Jr in a divine visitation. Since traditionally Jews passed on the mantle of priesthood by the laying on of hands, thus comes their belief in that fact. From the point of view of passing on...

Why does stretching feel so good, especially when you've just woken up?
There are several reasons why this happens, and they are all interconnected.
Firstly is circulation. Blood flow is not just caused by the heart. Although arteries pulse with the heartbeat, veins work by being squeezed by the muscle around them. When you stretch, you tense all of your muscles, which squeezed all the spent blood back to the heart and lungs, and replaces it with oxygenated...

Is Mormonism considered a Christian religion?
Several years ago I had two Mormon missionaries try to convert me, however, instead of just blindly leaping in, I decided to research it. I have checked varied sources, all of whom are highly credentialled, respected authorities on the subject. You may claim they are falsehoods, but these things are on public record, and have been under public scrutiny many times. The findings given by...

What's the connection between thunder and lightning? Can one occur without the other?
The sound of "Thunder" (not just sounds like thunder) can only come from a lightning strike. However, the sound that is given the name 'thunder' is basically the same as a sonic boom. In fact, that is all it is.
The incredible power of a lightning strike superheats the air around it, causing a rapid expansion that pulses out in a shockwave, at the speed of sound. This...
Answer to:
If Jesus and God are the same, who was in heaven when Jesus was on the Earth?
The bible describes God as Omnipotent (all powerful), Omnisient (all knowing) and Omnipresent (everywhere at once). God is bigger than the universe around us. His Spirit lives in the hearts of millions of Christians around the world, simultaneously, right at this very moment. God the Father was still in Heaven, just as he's always been. The part of God that made up Jesus was who walked...

Answer to:
Did Jesus literally die on a cross?
Yes. The biblical evidence for this is where the Roman soldier speared Jesus' side and blood and water came out. This separation of the blood components signifies a dead body. Also, the Romans would break the legs of those who were taking too long to die.
The bible says in John 19:33 - But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead,...
Answer to:
What must Christians do in order to receive salvation?
In response to Berend: Salvation is a free gift from God to all who believe. This is simple scripture, breathed by the very mouth of Jesus himself:
John 3:16: For God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten Son, that whoever would believe should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son to condemn the world but in order to save the world through him.
There is...

If Jesus and God are the same, who was in heaven when Jesus was on the Earth?
In reply to Anonymous, if you read the rest of the chapter, you'll find that he didn't pray. He rebuked the demon and commanded it to come out and never return. It was only after the event, when the disciples asked why THEY couldn't drive it out, that he said that it was a kind that could only be removed by prayer. If so, why didn't he pray?

Why is 666 the number of the Beast?
To answer this, you MUST have some understanding of the original audience it was written for. The Hebrew culture placed great importance on symbols that represented God. Indeed, 7 was almost a 'holy' number to them because it represented God's perfection. Since 6 is short of this, it indicates man's imperfection.
When Peter asked Jesus: "how many times must I...

If Levites were the only race allowed to hold the Aaronic Priesthood, and Christ was High Priest in the Melchezidic order, how did the Priesthood get bestowed onto Mormons?
This is an interesting theological question. Let me explain:
Melchezidic was believed by many scholars to be a 'Theophany', or a pre-Jesus appearance of the Christ. Therefore, if this is the case, then his priesthood came directly from God.
Only those from within the direct family of Aaron, who was a member of the Levite tribe, were able to serve as priests. The Levites served...

Is Mormonism considered a Christian religion?
For those who are keen to find the roots of Mormonism and its differences from Christianity, I would suggest the book "Unmasking Mormonism: Who are the Latter-day Saints?", by Selwyn Stevens.
To those who are so furiously denouncing any negative opinions in this topic, I *challenge* you to get this book and read it.
There are a huge number of issues that raise this strife as to...

Is it possible for aircraft with variable wing geometry (swing wing) to become full variable wing geometry (able to swing wings from midships to aft, and from midships to forward)?
You'll find that this concept is extremely difficult, for quite a few reasons.
1. Wing shape: Wings are specifically designed with a shape that matches their profile. Wingtips, the thickness and curve of the wings, flight controls and high-lift devices are all designed to maximise their effectiveness in a certain profile. If a wing that was designed for rearward sweep was swept forward,...

Are men technically still needed for the survival of the human race?
We really need to look at the whole realm of human existence. Conception, gestation and birth are but a small (but very important) part of our life.
How does the presence of men and women, and all their differences, affect the growing up and development of children? How does the presence of men and women in society affect the people in the world?
I would theorise (and I may be wrong) that...

Why does the interior of a race car get very hot?
I'm no expert on the subject, but for what it's worth:
Cabin temperatures in race cars can soar up to anywhere around 60 degrees celcius. What makes this worse for drivers is tha fact that the fire-retardant suits they wear are not very cool at the best of times.
Some reasons for the heat in racecar interiors:
1. Heat from the mechanicals: In race cars, the engine,...

What is a transfer case?
In four wheel drive cars, a second gearbox that contains the four wheel drive mechanisms, as well as the High/Low range gears. The transfer case mounts to the back of the normal gearbox, and both driveshafts come from it.
All wheel drive cars usually do not have a transfer case, but have the all wheel drive mechanism within their normal gearbox.

What is the JGTC?
JGTC stands for "All Japan Grand Touring Championship". It is a class of racing originally introduced into Japan in 1993.
The JGTC is divided into two main categories, which are governed by horsepower limits. The GT500 series is limited to 500HP, and the GT300 series is obviously limited to 300HP. This governing of power is achieved by the use of restrictors on the air intakes of...

Is it worth buying premium grade gasoline over regular grade gasoline?
Most premium grade fuels are becoming a lot better than the older ones.
Here in Australia, "High density, High octane" fuels are emerging, with RON as high as 98. They are claimed to have better engine cleaning properties, and they do give a noticeable increase in fuel economy.
For example, my last car had a range of 500km (312 miles) on about 40 litres of a 50litre tank of...

Can used engine oil be used as fuel for a diesel car?
Not that I'm aware of. The two compounds are very different.
The two would be completely incompatible. Diesel engines operate by burning diesel. It is specifically designed to use this type of fuel. Engine oil does not have the same properties as diesel. It does not burn the same, it would be too thick for the fuel system, not to mention the fact that used engine oil would have so many...

Why was the De Havilland Mosquito called the "Wooden Wonder"?
What made the Mosquito unique was not just that it was constructed from wood. It was the manner of construction.
The structure was formed by sandwiching together layers of balsa and plywood, making a very strong, but very light aircraft. Technically, it could be said that the Mosquito was the first aircraft to ever use composite materials.
(Actually, the reason that DeHavilland used wood...

Airships of yore used to hook airplanes on, thus operating as airborne carriers. Why don't we use blimps in this way today?
There would be many problems with this concept.
1. Weight of aircraft. While the early aircraft you refer to would have only weighed as much as a small car today, modern day jets weigh in at a minimum of 10 - 20 tonnes, not to mention bombers. You'd have to carry fuel supplies, maintenance facilities and logistics for them as well.
2. Launch and recovery. Early aircraft had very low...

Which of these fighter jets has the highest top speed: F14 Tomcat, F15 Eagle, F16 Falcon, or F18 Hornet?
I've seen figures that quote the F/A-18 Hornet at Mach 1.88, and the F-16 at Mach 2.01+. The F-14A can reach mach 2.34, but the later F-14D has a lower top speed of closer to Mach 2. The F-15 has a rated top speed of Mach 2.5.

What is the highest flying jet plane?
When the F-15 Eagle was first being tested, McDonnel Douglas conducted a test they called 'Streak Eagle'. An F-15A was launched into an almost ballistic climb, which broke 8 'time to altitude' records IIRC. The Streak Eagle passed 103,000 feet before flaming out, and reached a final altitude of 103,900 feet.
The pilot let the aircraft glide until he could restart the...

What are air brakes and how do they work?
Air brakes are simply the wheel brakes on the truck, but are powered by compressed air rather than hydraulics.
I believe there are two types of air-brakes. Ones that use pressure to apply the brakes, and ones that use pressure to hold the brakes open.
Normal car brakes operate by using pressure to apply the brakes, but if you somehow lose your brake fluid, you lose all braking. This is...

Is there a difference between four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive?
It depends on what make of car. Different brands have different systems with different names.
"All Wheel Drive" usually has its place in road cars, such as Subaru or Audi. These operate different systems, but are not designed for off road.
"Four Wheel Drive", on the other hand, usually refers to vehicles designed for off-road use. There are three kinds of genuine...

How good is rear-wheel drive in handling snow and ice?
The park brake (emergency brake) trick only works on cars with limited slip differentials. Even if you pull the park brake on rear wheels, as long as there is enough of a torque (traction) difference, the wheel with insufficient traction will take all the power of the differential - in other words, it will keep spinning.
Differentials operate on resistance. If the wheel has some resistance...
