When we ask or answer questions on here, should there be another field we fill out? Perhaps what "tone" the question or answer is?
I do like the question, but I would not think it is a good idea to indicate the tone. A lot of the fun lies in the misunderstandings, too. Some people will take any question serious, and others none. I think it is not good to explain the point of a joke, too. (Henry Ford said once: "Never explain, never complain!" - Everyone should do her / his / its own thinking.)

Answer to:
What is it about learning how to draw people using live models that is different from using photographs?
Time is the key here. A photo only captures a small fraction of time, and it is flat. You can trace the contours, which makes it much easier to create an image that looks convincing on first glance. With a live model, you will have to workout the contours yourself, you have to consider movement, and you cannot escape the fact that the model changes over time. It is more difficult than copying a...
Answer to:
What famous artist's painting would you use to create a man or woman's garment?
I would think it is difficult to use any figurative painting for clothing - it tends to be too loud. If you want to respect the painting, you should choose a painting that is decorative. Some works by Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Jean Arp, Henri Matisse (late cutouts) should work. Some artists have designed clothes themselves - Alexander Rodchenko designed a worker's suit in the 1920's for instance.

Answer to:
What kinds of sculptures would you recommend for a beginning sculptor(besides paper)?
I would start with clay and plaster. Maybe soft stone could work as well. You should try out the two basic principles for sculpture: modeling /building up a form from a usually more flexible material such as clay, and creating something out of a solid material such as stone or a block of plaster - there you create by removing material. (Remember the famous quip by Michelangelo, when he was...

What do you think of art exhibits that use actual human bodies to convey something?
If you are thinking about sculptures made out of dead bodies(like the so-called plastinations by Gunther von Hagens), I would say that I am principally against it, because I see severe moral problems with that.
If you are thinking about any form of dance, or in the field of visual art, of Happening and Performance - there are many very intersting works that deserve our attention.

This is quite a general question. I think the basic task of art history should be to tell the story of the development of art and to lay out a structure in which the various art styles can be grouped and classified. No, not at all. Controversial art is like the salt in the soup. Art is not just about pleasing people, it should heighten people's awareness for many issues and phenomena. An educated, open and tolerant society should be able to live with artistic provocations. Also, I do not want anybody to declare for me what is controversial and what is not. Was Hans Hofmann really a good art teacher?
For many artists, he definitely was. He had a quite simple system ("push and pull") to explain compositional methods in painting, which made it easy to follow - as well as easy to oppose. Pollock and Hofmann, for instance, did not exactly hit it off. Pollock refused to adopt Hofmann's system. But he is an exception. Many artists who later grew famous were Hofmann's students.

I am making a poster that is 30" x24" and includes 12 3"x4" photos and the file is only 850kb. That is not "poster quality" is it?
Not at all. You would need 300 dpi on the scale of your printout. A printable color image with 300 dpi in the size of c. 8 x 7 inches would require a file that is 14,5 MB large. Printable 3"x4" photographs would require files that are at least 5 MB, and it is important that the resolution is at least 300 dpi, better higher.

I think there is. It is worth fighting for a humane, social and fair world, and it is worth fighting for the ideals developed during the Enlightenment period, such as the human rights, etc. It is only very difficult to find the right alliances, because the political class everywhere in the world is losing its moral and ethic standards (some of them never had any, but some did).

What are the most unusual materials you have ever seen used in a mixed and multimedia art work:
In art today, you could say that there are no unusual materials anymore. Anything from blood and other bodily fluids to precious metal, and even immaterial things such as light and air have been used. James Turrell uses light, Lawrence Weiner uses language, James Lee Byars used gold and ephemeral material such as his own whispers. He once sent me a letter containing a small red glass bead as an...

Why is the famous painting "the scream" under van goghs name in some books? what did he have to do with it?
That can only be a mistake, even though Van Gogh and Edvard Munch - who painted "The Scream" - do share some stylistic similarities. These are quite superficial, though. Van Gogh was Dutch and worked in France most of the time, whereas Munch was Norwegian and traveled to Berlin. He had stronger links to German Expressionism than to Van Gogh. He was also younger than Van Gogh. They...

Do scents evoke memories and, if so, how?
Yes, scents can evoke memories, especially when a striking event in one's life was connected with a strong scent. How scents can evoke memories has been described by Marcel Proust in his major novel "A la recheche du temps perdu". The smell of madeleines - a French cake - plays an important role in the story.

Regardless of the decade, there has always been great music, average music, and bad music. I think it is difficult to generalize, although I would tend to think that there were more really good songs and melodies composed in the 1960s than today. We will know better in 20-30 years, because then time will have made its selection, and we will see if more material from the 1950s, 1960s, or the...

Are there any Jews still living in Germany?(Please don't downrate me. I'm just curious.)
Fortunately, yes - and the number is growing, too. I recently saw an exhibition at the Deutsches Historisches Museum about Jewish cultural life in Germany during the 1920s - it made me very sad to see what was lost during the years of Nazi rule in Germany. It will always remain a dark spot in our history, and it should never be forgotten.

He should be up there with Thomas Kinkade, but certainly not with the likes of Renoir or Michelangelo. Kinkade and Ross were not great painters, but mere producers of decorative objects. They were / are not innovative at all.

There are compositions from the 19th century, mostly by virtuosos such as Niccolo Paganini (violin), Robert Schumann, or Franz Liszt (both were accomplished pianists) who composed pieces with cadenzas, which are sections where the soloist can improvise on the given theme of the music. I think Mozart's music has some cadenzas as well. You might wish to google "cadenza" in order to...

Answer to:
Can you explain the use of space in analytical cubism?(I see 3 dimentional space in some, but two dimensional in others, so how do you explain it?)
The Cubists tried to get away from one-point perspective which dominated Western painting since the Renaissance. Basically, one-point perspective freezes the scene into a photographic image. It works like the eye of a camera - one eye only. Cézanne tried to paint with both eyes open simultaneously. Therefore his contours looks blurred in close-up. However, they read well over greater...

What Renaissance artist has the best examples of figure drawing?
I would propose Michelangelo. There are many different figure studies made by Michelangelo and by his workshop. Leonardo da Vinci is also very good, but there are not as many drawings that survived. Da Vinci is also more analytical and "cold", whereas the drawings by Michelangelo are very lively.

Kinetic art is art that moves. The first kinetic sculpture is Naum Gabo's "Standing Wave" from 1919. One of the legendary exhibitions about Kinetic art was the show "Rörelse i Konsten" (Movement in art), curated by Pontus Hulten for Moderna Museet Stockholm in 1961. Do you value an artist less if you find out they create their works [say, paintings] from photographs vs. making up their art completely from their imagination?
Not at all. It does not count which technique an artist uses. The result is what counts. There can be great paintings that were made with the aid of photography, and there can be bad paintings made solely with the aid of the imagination - and vice versa. A technique per se has no quality.

By what specific criteria do you deem someone to be "racist"? I am not asking for dictionary definitions, I am asking for your personal criteria by which YOU deem someone racist. I shall stipulate mine in an answer.
There have been very good answers to this important question so far, and I am afraid that I will repeat most of what has been said here already.
To me racism is an attitude based on stereotypes and prejudices about ethnic groups that do not take into account looking at specific individuals. It is usually based on the false idea that there are differences between ethnic groups, that indeed...

Interesting idea. What I would like to know is this: How long would it take to generate the energy out of a wind mill that was necessary to produce it in the first place (i. e. energy needed to produce the steel, manufacture the parts, ship them to the site, construct the mill, etc. pp.)? Are there "partner paintings" in art, where you have two individual paintings that tell one story, share one title, and are displayed together?
Yes, there are. Many painters made cycles about one particular subject, such as the cycle entitled "Stations of the Cross" by Barnett Newman, for instance. What are your opinions on Van Gogh's artwork? What do you like the most about it? What do you like the least? Anything else?
Vincent Van Gogh was a great painter. His paintings are filled with emotion and passion. His best works still look fresh today. Unfortunately, his paintings have been reproduced (in calendars, postcards, posters etc) so often that they seem boring. In front of an original, it is different, and they really shine.

Would it be a fair statement to say that all electronically made music does not have soul. Why or why not? Give examples.
Soul does not depend on the instruments an artist uses, it depends on his or her ability to translate his or her soul into music. There are antiques that can also be works of art, as for instance a small medieval sculpture. But many antiques would not qualify as works of art, such as old furniture or implements. It is a matter of discussion what would qualify as a work of art. Some people include more into this category, and others less. I do not think it is a terribly interesting question. Do museums often sell some of their art to purchase other works they would like to display?
Private museums do that, public museums should not do it. The idea of a museum is to preserve their collection, not to disperse it. When the Guggenheim museum sold a number of their Kandinsky works in order to buy the Panza collection in the 1980s, it caused some uproar in the museum world.
Basically, I think it is wrong for a museum to sell anything from their collection, because it violates...
