Answer to:
Why should smoking be banned in public places?
It's dangerous. It can cause burns. I know people who have been burned by people casually holding cigarettes. It can be a liter problem too. Cigarette butts are unsightly. Additionally, (public) money must be spent to separate smokers from non-smokers. Smokers need some facilities to keep smoke from bothering non-smokers.

Some of the wisest people in the history of the world never went to college but having said that, I still think a college education is pretty important when instructing others in a formal situation. The big questions is whether teachers should be required to go back to school for retraining?

Why are people so easily led? In general. Here´s an example from earlier today ...
It's greed or fear of losing out on something. Automatically, people want what they don't have. It's not thinking it's instinct, part of a "lizard" brain reaction to situations of scarcity. Historically (and I mean millions of years ago) the ones that took part survived those that didn't were less likely to.

On balance, do prisons alleviate crime in society, or are they crime factories?
Prisons do not alleviate crime. Even if some people get rehabilitated, a vast majority or ex-cons go on to commit more crime. Prisons treat the effect not the cause of crime. Having said that, there is no way to totally eliminate crime in our current society. Crime is part of the human condition. We just need to control it a bit.

Many serial killers claim that they got their ideas from books, so if thats the case why are authors allowed to write such gruesome material? do we have nothing else to say!
So we should suppress free speech? Just because you have a knife, gun or axe in your possession that doesn't mean you have to harm people with them. I think it's more a issue of not taking responsibility for their actions. It's easy to blame someone else for one's weakness. Books DO NOT make serial killers.

I beg to differ. How can you say that? Widescreen is the format that was meant to watch movies in. Movies should have scope; cinematography is best illustrated by wide format where you can get the whole picture (pun intended). Movies should be an experience not a casual view as television.

After that it got silly, and JKR seemed to be trying too hard to make the series go forward but lost appeal when she started killing off characters and making stupid plot devices. The batter bunts the ball down the 1st base line. Can the batter step back to avoid the tag and allow the runner to get to 3rd.
The batter is not required to run to first. He can just go back to the dugout if he wants but that would be bad form and considered "not hustling" I would guess. It would also probably behoove the batter to attempt to get the fielder to make a play on him to give the runner a chance to advance.

Are Japanese cars the most reliable cars? If so, then whats their secret? If not, then which one is?
Yes, this seems to be the case anyway with Toyota, Nissan and Honda. Mitsubishi had some problems a few years ago with its domestic brand (especially large trucks and sedans) but seems to have mostly recovered. Surely, Japanese cars are designed first to be reliable and second to be economical on fuel. Those are two great incentives to buy.

I think it's impossible to say "the most loyal fans" because all teams have a core of loyal fans. How do you determine who is "most loyal"? Even teams that have never won a World Series have loyal fans. Red Sox and Cubs fans tend to brag about how loyal they are. More power to them.

Was bombing the cities(Hiroshima etc) in Japan in the 1940's one of the most horrific and immoral acts committed in the last century?
No, but it was up there. You could argue that in war, morals are an afterthought. The American military was doing what it thought right in order to win the war. Certainly, instantly incinerating 150,000 old men, women and school children (the bulk of the population of Hiroshima and Nagasaki near the end of the war) was horrific. Fire bombing Tokyo was also quite horrible but again, war is a...

Japan is a country. Generally it is quite safe, no one owns guns, most people follow rules, cities are crowded but the countryside is spacious, people eat a lot of fish but many other types of food too. No one considers themselves very religious but they follow ceremony quite strictly. Honor, obligation and shame are big factors in behavior. Do you want to know about Tokyo or other cities?

I think it was a love/hate relationship. When she was with him, she mostly loved him/was overwhelmed by his affection/lust. When she thought about Ashley, she resented Rhett for not being him. But also, Scarlet was basically a self-centered individual who could never love anyone as much as herself.

Answer to:
Do 'trickle down' economics actually work? Why or why not?
I think it is not as effective as some other types of economic stimulus. Trickle down is good but it tends to polarize the populous. Rich get richer but poor don't necessarily reap the benefit. Buying yachts, luxury cars and several-million dollar homes can only go so far to improving a pensioner or homeless person.

I am trying to show a sign of peace and reconciliation to my Japanese mother in law. Is there a particular sign of peace in the Japanese culture that will show that I want to bury the hatchet to signify a new start?
Good luck on that one. Japanese mother-in-laws are notorious. Obasans can be the most wicked, nasty, spiteful people in the world. If she wants to make your life hell then she will. I would ignore her for about 20 years otherwise if you can produce an offspring, it might soften her up a bit.
