I want to write a fantasy with a mystery entertwined into the story, like the Myst games. What would be the best book or web-page to view for tips, resources, help for this kind of thing? All the resources I find seem to be made for detective stories. :-(
Here are a few that might be helpful:

How to stop someone from spying on cell phone
It depends on what you mean by "spying." As I have stated in a few answers, I work for a cellular provider, so I might get more in-depth than you wanted. I'' separate the answer into some categories.
Listening to Your Calls
In today's cellular networks, listening in on someone's call is very difficult. To do it, you have either work for the company or be in law...

Why r steam rollers called steam rollers? they dont produce get rid of or have anything to do with steam?
Originally, steam rollers were powered by steam. In fact, many of the early ones looked very similar to a steam tractor or steam locomotive engine. Since they were invented around the time of the automobile boom, they have been a staple of road construction since the beginning and have just never lost the name.
Well, to be honest, they DID lose the name. Technically, they are now called...

What is an erection?
Maybe the question was supposed to be read as, "Physically, what happens to cause an erection?"
The question could be read to mean that, and I am trying to give the Beginner a little slack before ripping his head off (although I think that it was probably a joke question anyway)
For the record, I'll answer the "possible" question...
Erections are caused by the...

How do I find the fuel pump on a 1995 Blazer and how difficult is it to replace?
It is actually in the gas tank. If you know what you are doing, and don't mind dropping the tank, it isn't too hard. It can be a messy job though, and if you aren't sure of what you are doing, you should probably take it to a mechanic.
I have been told that you can remove it without dropping the tank, but I have never even tried.
Hope that helps.

I have a Toshiba 42-inch projection screen television. The video went green and now my screen is black, but I can still hear the sound clearly. What's wrong with it?
Could be a lot of things. Before taking it to a shop, I would check some basic stuff. First, make sure all of the cables are plugged in good and tight. I would even recommend using a different cable type to see where the problem is. If you use component cables now, try composite or S-Video, or whatever way you aren't trying now.
Also, did all of the inputs go bad? Can you plug a DVD...

I just had to replace the starter in my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. What could have caused it to die so early?
It depends on what you mean by "die".
Was the flywheel worn down or ground down? If so, then you may be holding the key in the start position a little too long, or maybe you have tried to start it while it was running.
Did the bendix spring just go bad? If so, then you just were unlucky, or there was a problem with it all along.
Did it just stop spinning all together? That...

Where is the oxygen sensor on a 1997 Ford Ranger with 6 cylinders?
In 1996, the use on on-board diagnostic system was mandated by law, so depending on the exact manufacture date, it may have 2, 3 or 4 different oxygen sensors.
The first one should be right on the exhaust manifold, near the bottom where the manifold drops down from the engine.
There may be another on farther down the manifold, and there is a pretty good bet that there is another one back...

Do menthol cigarettes really have fiber glass in them?
All filtered cigarettes have a little bit of fiberglass in the filter. Menthol cigarettes and "normal" cigarettes are no different in this respect.
However, many years ago, cigarette manufacturers found out that too much fiberglass in the filter caused excess coughing when inhaled, so they started reducing the amount that was in the filter itself.
They have eliminated a lot of...

What does it mean when a friend gives a new Harley owner a small bell?
This is an old custom with motorcycle owners.
The legend is that motorcycle accidents or malfunctions were caused my evil spirits or gremlins. The sound of the bell is said to scare these gremlins away, so the bell is basically a good luck charm.
To complicate things a little, the custom says that the bell has to be given to you for it to work. You can't just buy your own bell and...

Why is a 3-2 pitch called a payoff? Payoff for whom?
Well, it's a payoff for the hitter, because 90% of the time, the next pitch will be a strike.
Pitchers always want a strikeout over a walk, so you can be pretty sure that the next pitch will be a strike pitch, meaning you can be more certain that you can swing away.
It basically means that it has been a payoff for waiting. Normally the word payoff is used when the last 2 or 3 pitches...

Why are there Braille keys on drive-up ATMs?
Most ATM manufacturers use interchangable parts for all of their ATM's. It's cheaper than manufacturing a different set of keypads, buttons, etc.. for all of the different ATM styles, so the keypads and other pieces that are braile-imprinted are used.
Also, many ATMs that are used in drive-up lanes are the same ATM's that are placed indoors as well. They just figure it's easier (and cheaper)...

Are there any good sites out there for uploading your own ringtones and wallpapers to your cell phone?
Well, a lot of the answer to that question depends on the service provider you have.
If you have a Sprint phone, you can use rumkin.com http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/ to upload files to your phone. You have to have the files in a format that will work on your phone for them to actually play. Most older phones use the QCP format for ringtones, although some newer ones use MP4 or AAC files as...

The answer above is correct, but I thought I'd expand on it a little...
Bowling shoes do allow you to slide on the wooden lanes. This is neccessary because of the forward momentum you have when making your approach. If you were to wear rubber-soled shoes, which tend to stick on wooden surfaces, you would probably fall over forward as you threw the ball...trust me, I have tried it.

What is the function of a circuit breaker?
Circuit breakers are used to protect an electrical circuit from overloading or short-circuiting. This prevents damage to equipment and wiring, as well as reducing the risk of fire.
When a circuit breaker detects an electrical current higher than the limit it is designed to handle, the breaker opens the circuit, meaning that no electricity can pass.

The exact answer to "why" this happens has nothing to do with the density of ice or water.

No. They do not. Also, even when the phones are turned on, the GPS receiver does not "listen" all the time. It must receive a request from the network or on the handset itself.
This is the reason that GPS units in mobile phones have such a long batter life. If they "listened" constatntly, the batter would discharge very quickly.

The best thing for you to do is to be his friend. Don't push the idea of getting back together, and don't get discouraged/angry/jealous if he wants to see other people. If he isn't 100% sure, there isn't anything you can...

I am 14, and he is turning 18. What can I say to convince him that it won't be illegal if we start going out together?
It WILL be illegal if you have sex, and there is nothing you can say to change that....except move to another country.
If you are just dating, then it is legal, but a little unusual.
If you have to say ANYTHING to "convince" him, then he probably doesn't want to start seeing you anyway.

What would you do if your boyfriend got a text message from a girl he met, and when you question him about it he will not give you a straight answer?
I guess the phrase "will not give you a straight answer" confuses me a little. I assume that he has given you some kind of answer, and that you aren't satisfied with it.
My opinion is that you have a right to be suspicious. What you do now depends a lot on how much you trust him. If you think it was probably harmless, let it go. If you think that it was more than that, you...

How can I get my boyfriend to try bondage without him thinking I'm a freak?
That's a tough one.
The easy answer is to say, "Just talk to him openly about it. If your relationship is strong, you should be able to be open without worrying about what he might think."
I put that here, because I know it's what you are supposed to say...I'm not sure it applies here :)
Here are some suggestions:

My friend has a girlfriend at college, and is away from her for the summer. He talked to an ex-gf online about their past sexual experiences and it got him aroused. Would this be considered cheating?
Even though it sounds pretty harmless, I bet your friend's girlfriend wouldn't be too happy about it. Just reverse the situation and think about how you'd feel if your significant other did it...
The problem with the question, "Is this cheating?," is that it depends completely on the opinions of the person being "cheated" on. Just because all of us out here...

How do you drive and operate a forklift?
I can only answer this about the forklifts that I have operated. There are probably different designs than the two I have used, but I believe that knowing the basics should allow you to operate almost any you come across.
First, let's discuss the operation of the forks themselves, as those controls seem to be fairly standard. You will normally have 2 levers. One lever controls the...

I had sex in April, the condom broke, but I took the morning after pill. I got my period for two months but I didn't get it in July. Could I be pregnant?
As long as that was the last time you had sex, then you are probably not pregnant.
My initial answer to this question was that it would be impossible, but I have found a lot of references about women continuing to have their period while they are pregnant, so I suppose it isn't impossible, just not likely.
The morning-after pill is usually very effective when taken correctly, so the...

My girlfriend is 23 and I am 33. We have begun arguing and hanging doggedly to ridiculous things. Could this be because of our age difference?
That may be a big part of it, but it isn't probably the entire reason.
You have to remember that your life experiences are probably quite a bit different than hers, so your "mentality" about certain things will most likely be a little different.
But this is true in most relationships, regardless of age. A sign of a good relationship is each person's ability to see the...

Where can I find a listing of companies that have just entered the stock exchange and that you can buy direct shares from?
What you are looking for is called an Initial Public Offering, more commonly referred to as an IPO.
I use http://www.ipomonitor.com to keep track of companies that file for an IPO, but there are probably more sites out there.
That site isn't as detailed as you need sometimes, so the best thing that I can recommend is to watch the Filings on IPOMonitor.com, and, once you see a company...

I think the fact that you mentioned that "he says we have no strings" provides the best insight to the answer.
Just because he wants to be monogamous doesn't indicate that he thinks anything will come from your relationship, and I wouldn't base any decision you make on that fact.
You need to decide how you feel about him, and about the whole situation. If you really...

What does "no holds barred" mean and where did it come from ?
The phrase actually comes from the sport of wrestling (the sport, not the TV stuff).
"Real" wrestling has very strict rules, and certain "holds" are indeed "barred," or not permitted. There are also similar rules in boxing.
Thus, a wrestling or boxing match where there were no rules of conduct imposed would be a "no holds barred" brawl.

When and how did the term shortstop originate?
I have always heard a couple of different answers to this question.
The one that I think makes the most sense requires you to know that there used to be 4 outfielders and 3 basemen.
In 1849, DL Adams invented the shortshop position by moving one of the outfielders in, basically having him "stop short" of his normal position (or possibly so that he could "stop the ball...

Okay. I have been reading everything in this thread, and I'd like to go on the defensive for a minute...

It's interesting that you ask this question. I just saw an episode of Law & Order where a doctor was accused of doing just that. I wonder if you saw the same episode....
The answer to your question is that no hospital or doctor considers this a practice that they follow. However, there have been plenty of documented cases where doctors have encouraged the termination of life-support...

What are the signs of a monitor to a computer "going out?"
There can be a lot of different symptoms, depending on what is actually wrong with the monitor.
Some common problems are:
- Monitor shuts off or "blacks out"
- The display "rolls" vertically or horizonatally
- High-pitched "squeal" from the monitor (this doesn't always mean the monitor is going bad. Changing the refresh rate in your OS might help)

Why do people put blinders on horses?
Basically, blinders are used to keep the horse focused on what is in front of it.
Since the horse can't see everything in it's peripheral vision, it keeps the horse from becoming distracted or scared. You will notice that blinders are used in situations where there may a lot of distractions, such as public places.

Can you put new wallpaper over old wallpaper, or is it better remove the old first?
It is possible to cover old wallpaper with new wallpaper, and a lot of people do it this way.
My suggestion is to try to imagine what you might ever want to do with the wall in the future. If the new wallpaper you are applying is going to be permanent, or if you are selling the house and won't have to deal with it later, go ahead and cover the old stuff up. Let anyone who wants to...

I can find no lint filter on my new washer, there is no mention of one in the owner's manual, and the sales clerk said washers do not have lint filters anymore. Is this true?
Yes, this is true. Only dryers use lint filters or screens. A link screen on a washer would never collect any lint, because the clothes are always wet, which prevents most "lint" material from seperating from the clothing.

It's only cheating if you feel like it is, but it seems like a pretty minor offense if he truly never used the sites that he signed up for.
I guess I would be more curious as to why he signed up for sites that he never used. I assume he must have been thinking of seeing other people, but, since nothing ever came from it, he obviously changed his mind. As long as he didn't try to...

What does the "ex" in ex-wife /husband, ex-girlfriend/boyfriend, etc., stand for?
Long answer, but I included all of the details for completeness.
The prefix ex- comes from Latin ex-, e-, meaning “out of, from.”
It usually occurs with word roots that come from Latin verbs. Thus combining ex- with the Latin verb tendere, “to stretch,” gives us extend, “to stretch out.”
Similarly, in express, ex- combines with the root press, which comes from the verb premere, “to...

I think that the phrase "eat house cats" is a little harsh.
It is true that Siberian Huskies have a reputation of not being being very good with cats, but I have known of, at least, two Huskies that shared a house with a cat without incident.
I would say that, as long as you are getting a puppy and not a full-grown dog, you should be able to train the dog to "respect"...

They just figure it's...

What is the origin of the term "horse power"?
It is credited to engineer James Watt, also credited with inventing the steam engine. To convince potential buyers of the value of his steam engine, he devised a way to rate its power by comparing it to the work done by horses, which was a comparison people at the time could relate to.
Watt watched horses at work, but no on is sure of what he observed. He may have observed ponies lifting...

Yes, they will be fine, as long as they are designed to fit your phone model.

I don't think that this is a question of "wrong" or "right".
It is definitely a little unusual, although not unheard of. You need to think about the future. Right now, when he's 55, it may not be a big deal. He is probably still fairly active and willing to do the things that you want to do.

When a show is shot on location in a real place, like an airport for example, do the producers pay to use it?
There isn't a concrete answer to this, but most of the time they don't pay anything.
When a movie studio wants to use a real setting, they have to take into account a lot of different factors.
First - Is it feasible to shoot the camera angles and scenes that are required in a public place, or is a full-blown set more practical?
Second - Can the studio find a public place...

Do people tend to be moody while they are trying to quit smoking?
Unfortunately, yes. Smoking is like many other addictions, and the human body goes through "withdrawls" from the lack of nicotine.
These withdrawls vary from person to person, but moodiness is a common side-effect when trying to quit smoking.
Nicotine chemically produces a calming effect on the body. Once the body is used to this effect, taking it away causes the mind to sway...

What is "revolving credit"?
Revolving credit deals with things like credit cards, where you have a credit limit.
When you charge something, it eats away at your available credit. Then when you make a payment, you get that credit back, minus interest. If you keep following this cycle, the credit is revolving.
The opposite of this would be something like a car loan. If you get a car loan for $20,000 and make a payment...

Are there any cell phones that do not use batteries?
The answer to your question (at least the way you asked it) is No.
All cell phones "use" batteries. Most cell phones can be "used" without them, however, but you have to plug them in to a wall outlet or a car cigarette lighter. There are no cell phones that can be powered without a wire attaching it to a powe source.
Hope that answers the question.
Answer to:
Many cell phones regularly receive the correct time of day from their cell service providers. Where do these providers get the exact time from?
The source or the time displayed on your phone is actually input by a person.
Norrmally, most carriers try to ensure the most accurate time by having the person that sets the clock call one of the atomic clock phone numbers, but in the end, it is still typed in by hand.
This statement is not going to be true forever. Many companies are making changes to the systems that control the...

In fact, if you have a GSM phone in the US, it will be able to pick up a signal anywhere in Europe where there is coverage.
