It sounds to me like there was some rust on one (or more) of the cam lobes, which would mean that the valve (valves) is/are barely cracking. take of the valve covers and rotate the motor by hand and use a dial indicator to measure the lift on each valve. When you find an irregular number, you will know that you have an out of spec camshaft.
