how to prevent from having hemroids? Mine were small but I want to make sure I eliminate them for good and they don't re-occur.
There are a few different things you can do - I recently found all this out because my boyfriend developed serious hemorrhoids. You really can prevent them without resorting to medication.
The main thing is to avoid constipation. This is because hemorrhoids are veins that get swollen and enlarged from having pressure on them, and constipation creates pressure. Be sure to drink enough water [at...

Answer to:
My boyfriend has never seen me naked. I really want to show him but something is blocking me mentally. How can I be comfortable in my own skin?
Try to understand what it is that's blocking you. Once you've really understood it and you can clearly see why you feel that way, you'll probably start to overcome it.
For example, imagine yourself standing there naked. You'll find that you have some kind of reaction e.g. feeling embarrassed or ashamed or not being comfortable. As you feel that reaction, notice exactly what it feels like and...

I have a good friend that asks for help with big projects with very little notice. I am not sure why she can't just say, "On Sat. can you help me with....?" I am busy and sometimes just tired and want to relax. How can I say something?
Whenever you want to give someone constructive feedback, it helps to be very warm, clear and to the point. It's important to remember to be warm and encouraging so the other person doesn't feel dumped on or overwhelmed by your comments.
Maybe ask her in a friendly way why she tends to leave her projects for the last minute. Wait for an appropriate moment to casually bring it up, and see if you...

What does the South African flag represent?
Well, there are two possible answers to that question. It depends whether you mean, what does the design of the flag symbolise, or what does the flag mean to South Africans?
In terms of design, it represents a Rainbow Nation coming together in unity. The flag was designed by a former South African State Herald, Fred Brownell, and was first used on 27 April 1994. The central Y shape can be...

Where were you during the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center buildings in New York City?
My friend was about to get married and I was a bridesmaid. We were all getting fitted for our dresses, and there was a TV on in the room. Between laughing and joking, we kept noticing these images of a plane exploding into a building and at first we thought it was a movie. Then we realised and turned up the volume to hear what was going on.
Later that day I went to see a friend who was...

What some good tips for a story about a shy girl with a slutty and sexy side?
When someone has such strikingly opposite sides of their personality, I think it suggests some kind of interesting psychological hang-up, baggage or issue. I think it makes the character more real if there's a hint of where these opposite sides came from, and why she acts like she does.
Is it because she feels powerful when she's in her 'slutty' persona, and not as invisible as she does when...

What is an advertising agency?
Advertising agencies help other companies advertise their products or services.
They advise them on the best way to achieve their business strategy and help them choose where to place their ads and what approach to take. Have you ever encountered low-key racism?
All the time. I look white although I'm not, and this often means people will say things in front of me that they probably wouldn't have said if they knew I wasn't white. Just little remarks - like someone remarking they hope their dark tan doesn't lead to anyone getting the wrong idea about their race, that kind of thing.
Always awkward.

I'm not sure what you mean - I'm an African woman, in the sense that I'm a woman, born and bred in Africa, and I don't feel that way. I guess I don't know what you mean by African woman? It sounds like you've had some kind of experience with one person, but remember that doesn't define whole groups. That would be generalising.

I wasn't sure the exact category to put this in, But how do you learn to not care about what anybody thinks about you?
My advice to you would be to stop focusing so much on what everyone else thinks of you, and instead focus more on yourself. It's pointless chasing the idea of pleasing everyone else, because it's impossible. No matter how hard you try, someone somewhere is going to have a problem with you. So you might as well please yourself and just try to be the most awesome possible version of yourself.

Answer to:
Why do most people think it is wrong to be judgemental? Are we not to use our intellect?
I think it boils down to the fact that nobody is perfect, and many people also don't like hearing about their imperfections. If you judge someone, often that implies they've done something wrong. Even if you're right, people don't like hearing about it. There's also this sense that you're not perfect either, and one day you're going to do something that someone else could really rub in your...

It can be really confusing. There's so much pressure on us to be like the people we see on TV and in ads, but of course they don't usually behave anything like normal people.

Repetitive certainly but probably not arbitrary. Those rituals I think you mean have evolved into social contracts to signify important things to one another: you do this or that to show that you love someone or hate them, or that you're independent and no longer a child, or whatever. Atheists, if you were elected President/Premier of your country, what would you say in place of "so help me God"?
I think "so help me God" is like an affirmation or assurance, in which you swear to live up to your oath of office. So I think they should substitute something a little more binding and legally meaningful, like, "or else prosecute me to the fullest extent of the law".

How do you like Spore so far?
It's awesome and totally addictive. It took me this long to answer this question because I've barely stopped playing!
Answer to:
I think the planets are far too small in Spore. From the city level, you can already see the curvature of the planet. How do you make the planets larger
I don't know if it's possible to change the size - maybe with some of the advanced planet sculpting tools but I haven't seen anything. But the small size is useful when you're chasing enemy ships from city to city!

What are some things you don't like about Spore?
It's still a bit buggy - like sometimes, my Mission thingy doesn't show where I need to go and it's a real hassle finding the right star by luck alone.
Also, I hate that there are so few colours to show the different empires - what is it, orange, green, blue, cyan, purple, mustard, red? So different empires are the same colour in different regions, and it's confusing.

I think you were really friends - it's impossible to know the entirety of another person's mind and soul, so there's always a degree of 'not knowing'. But if you had a connection and enjoyed each other in some way, then that's friendship. Maybe that person changed in later years, and that's why you no longer have the same outlook. Or...

I'm not even American and I'm nervous! US domestic and foreign policy has such a far-reaching impact around the globe that I'm really holding thumbs for a positive outcome. I have to say the last several years have been a baffling time to be an outsider looking in... There have been times I've really despaired at how seemingly charmless, witless candidates who lack any...
Answer to:
Do you think the more we engage/indulge in negativity, the more it becomes part of who we are? Or is negativity like a coat that you can put on and take off whenever we want?
Whatever you choose to engage in regularly, begins to define you. It's a habit, but it's also more than a habit. The neural pathways in the brain are formed and maintained by repetition - and those pathways are what define your brain chemistry. In other words, if you feel negative often, you become likely to feel negative even more in future. It eventually becomes difficult to respond...

I just learned a few weeks ago, so 33! We went away for a seaside weekend with a group of friends - but it rained the whole time so we stayed inside by the roaring fire. A friend of a friend, Francois, had brought his poker set along and taught us to play Hold 'Em.
At first all the guys played while the girls chatted - then I got interested and became the Dealer - and an hour or two...

What is the origin of the word "fuck"?
Cipher's answer is correct - the word has German, Dutch, Swedish and Norwegian roots from words meaning copulate, penis etc.

Snow isn't very common in South Africa but it does happen! Usually just in the mountains, but occasionally in the cities too - although there are typically gaps of several years between city snowfalls.

What are the 11 official languages of South Africa? What do you think of having so many 'official languages?'
I think it's great having 11 official languages, as it shows respect and recognition for all the different groups in the country. It also encourages understanding of diversity, and encourages people to learn each other's languages. Most South Africans speak 4 or more languages, and almost all South Africans speak at least 2 languages, so the policy is entirely appropriate.

Xenophobia is an economic phenomenon, first and foremost. The majority of people perpetrating these crimes are living in tumble-down shacks, with no job at all and the bare minimum of prospects for getting one, and living off the meagre income brought in by one family member.

How important is empathy? Do you think if we were all more empathetic, it would be a good thing or is it overrated?
I believe empathy is one of the best parts of being human. Even more so than love, because love is called for as a biological imperative at times, like the protective love of a mother for a child, and it can appear in some form in other animals as well as humans. But I see empathy as unique to humans, and it requires kindness, warmth and compassion.

In the end, loyalty by far.
Fear is quicker and more broad-based, in that you can persuade a huge group of total strangers to behave a certain way by appealing to their fears. But if someone is loyal to you, based on a long relationship, there's very little they wouldn't do for you. A loyal friend would take a bullet for another, whereas someone motivated by fear would have run off...

What attributes of the lotus flower make it symbolic?
The lotus symbolises purity in impure surroundings, for a very interesting reason.
Lotus plants have a natural self-cleaning property, which means that even though they tend to grow in wet, muddy places, their leaves appear almost magically spotless and pristine. This is because the structure of the leaves at a microscopic level is too rough for water or dirt to stay there - it just rolls...

Lotus plants have a natural self-cleaning property, which means that even though they tend to grow in wet, muddy places, their leaves appear almost magically spotless and...

A relationship that you thought was destined to last forever has ended (not yours). During the life of the relationship, you gave a family treasure or heirloom to this person. Once given, does it belong to that person who left or should it be returned?
If I were the recipient, I would insist on returning it, as I wouldn't feel right about keeping it. But I guess everyone is different. If they don't realise the significance of the item and they think it's just a nice gift, then they won't offer anyway. But either way, there's not much that can be done about it.
I suppose if the heirloom leaves the family, it would...

Do you remember your childhood home? What still really stands out for you about it?
We lived next door to my grandparents so the two back yards were joined together, and I loved having all that space to play in. My grandfather was a wonderful gardener, so he had this huge flowerbed with flowers taller than I was. In our garden we had a honeysuckle bush that smelled wonderful. :)

Don't be a irreplaceable? You can't be promote otherwise agree or disagree?
Don't worry about whether you're irreplaceable or replaceable. Just aim to achieve your best at work, and after a while if you notice that your employer refuses to promote you because you're too good at your current job, confront them about it. Explain that you need to grow in your career and that you'll need to leave for another job if they don't give you opportunities...

Sounds like an awful situation - my sympathy.
I guess if it were me, I'd be wondering what was going on in her life to make her want to do that. Non U.S. dwellers: Does your perception of American society / lifestyle come mostly from American television and movies? Be as honest as you can. This is not a quiz for which you get a grade.
My perception of American society / lifestyle comes from several sources.
As a young child, most of the shows and movies I'd watch were American, and so the American lifestyle seemed exciting and like a better version of where I lived. South Africa was undergoing sanctions then so we didn't have many global brands, and popular culture was several years out of date. So watching...

You're not the only one - I struggle too!
I found out something interesting about this - most people pronate when they walk [the foot rolls inward] but a lot of people under-pronate or in rare cases supinate [the foot rolls outward]. Sorry to hear about that - it must be really frustrating for you.
A good simple way to keep sharp is to avoid getting in a rut with anything. When I first read the question on the category home page, I already know how I'd like to answer. I'd be really tempted, but in the end I'd stay in the present. I can relive all the good times just by remembering them, but if I went back I'd have to relive through all the difficult times too. There should be a power button on your monitor - usually on the front - with a little indicator light next to it. It may be that you need to press that button to turn on the monitor power. The high pitched sound from your PC might be an alarm indicating this.

Whats better to shave with a razor, or get a Brazilian wax done?
The wax for sure! Shaving grows back really fast and can cause nasty bumps or skin irritations. The wax hurts pretty badly the first time, but not so much after that.

I don't have lots of money. Could I earn a few dollars by investing in the stock market? Where would I begin, and whom would I contact?
Imo, the stock market is best left to those who can afford to lose their investment if the market goes sour. With stocks, you generally either get a high return with high risk [not good if you can't afford to lose it] or a lower, more steady return over a longer period. If I were you, I would rather talk to my bank about savings products with high interest rates and low risk.

I will be starting to work at a revenue agency company (a government job) in early January, but I am not quite sure what kind of clothings would be appropiate to wear. Can anyone give me some suggestions? I'd appreciate it.
It's always good to dress neatly and smartly for the first while, until you see what others are wearing. So for the first few days, simple classic outfits in neutral colours are best. Once you get a feel for the accepted style of dress, you can change to whatever feels appropriate to you. Good luck with your new job!

Some of them definitely creep me out. There seem to be an awful lot of hardcore religious Christian ads talking about sin and punishment - really scary stuff.

Was it wrong to give a close friend of my husband a birthday kiss (on the cheek) at a party in front of everyone?
Only you know the answer, because what makes it wrong or right is the way you feel about it.
If you're attracted to him, or got a little thrill from the kiss, or are now thinking about him in an inappropriate way, then it was wrong. But if it was innocent from your side, then it's totally fine.

It's wonderful to give lots of love and attention to your partner, but a good trick is to remember to shower yourself with just as much love and attention. That leads to you treating yourself to special days once in a while doing your own favourite things or hanging out with your own old friends. Two guys get into a car crash and argue about whose fault it was.
One guy spills the other guy's drink but won't apologise.
You get the idea :)

It might be from the steriods, for sure. If it were me, I'd still go for the walk, but take it really easy.

To go right back to the very beginning, check out some Gil Scott-Heron [e.g. the Revolution will not be Televised].
Imo, the best old-school track is The Message by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. It's a classic.
I'm a huge Run-DMC fan, so I completely agree with that. Then, how about branching out a little to the Beastie Boys?

Sure you are :) You're obviously prejudiced in the literal sense of the word, because it means you've prejudged all bums without meeting them, and decided you hate them.

My dog has this weird compulsion, that whenever I get home he HAS to greet me with something in his mouth. It's usually one of his toys, but if he can't find one he will grab anything (pillows, paper, he tried to grab the cat once). Can anyone explain?
He's offering you the item as a gift and a recognition that he sees you as the leader of the pack. He's saying, "Welcome home boss - here's a little something for you!"
It's really cute actually. And it's especially touching that he would offer you one of his own toys, which are probably his most valued possessions.

Which is correct: I talked to my mom, or I talked with my mom?
'To' is correct in traditional, formal English grammar. 'With' has become fairly accepted usage in the US, and is becoming popular everywhere else.
They do actually have slightly different meanings, so I think they should ideally both be correct and shouldn't be used interchangeably.

Do US corporations have the right to tell consumers that they won't improve their products now or in the future? (example US auto manufacturers saying they need federal legislation to produce cars that get over 35 MPG.)
The short answer - yes. But you also have the right to take action against them, e.g.
+ Refuse to buy their products and encourage others to do the same
+ Elect politicians that support the issues you support, so that this kind of legislation can come to pass
+ Petition to have the US fully ratify the Kyoto Protocol so that regulations become tighter

It's one hell of a delicate situation and the best advice anyone can give is this: stick to the truth and tell what really happened right from the start. If there's any evidence to back up what you say, get hold of it as soon as possible.
For anyone to accuse someone falsely of rape is a terrible, terrible thing as it can be damaging to both their lives and is also an insult to...

"Drop out suggested an elective, selective, graceful process of detachment from involuntary or unconscious commitments. 'Drop...

Only if they really want to! If someone's tempted to have it, I'd say they should think about it for a long while, and make sure that they're not reacting to some passing insecurity or trying to get a quick fix e.g. liposuction instead of natural weight loss. Only most of them! For the sake of argument, I'd say you could look at it the other way around - humans are pretty much the only ones who would consider having sex for the sole reason of procreation [I'm picturing couples who need to stick to schedules to get pregnant, even after it gets a bit unromantic].

There are lots of brain exercises!
A good simple way to keep sharp is to avoid getting in a rut with anything. If you want to stimulate your brain, do things in fresh ways whenever possible, and try to be...

What is the origin of the phrase high brow or low brow.
In the 'science' of phrenology which was very popular in the mid to late 1800's, it was believed that the bumps and ridges on someone's skull could be 'read' or interpreted to learn about that person's psychological aptitudes and tendencies. Having a high eyebrow line was supposed to indicate great intellectual capacity, and vice versa.

Sure there are girls who love very hairy guys, but in general, there are two areas where it's not really a good idea for a guy to be overly hairy - the back and the neck. You're too young to have the ear thing going on - if not, that's a bad one too. But don't worry too much, hair on a guy is nice in moderation.

I don't think the issue here is her appearance but more her co-dependence and how it traps you. Co-dependency is unhealthy for both people. You need to put all your energy into resolving that situation before you decide finally to leave or stay.

It depends whether you want to open a small local business or a large global one. The process is obviously more complex if it's international. In that case, your best bet is to pay a legal firm to check for you - they'll require a list of the countries in which you intend to do business.
