I'm a college student who's having hard time to choose between computer engineering technology and computer programming, what do you suggest?
I recommend going for computer engineering technology. While it is a harder discipline, it gives you wider career choices. You will still learn programming and can choose that for a career if you like, but you will also have other choices too.
Answer to:
How do you keep a cat from wrecking a Christmas tree while we are away at work all day?
I always put some cheap sacrificial ornaments from the dollar store on the lower branches because I knew the cats would play with them. To keep the tree from being knocked over, take some transparent fishing line, tie it to the top of the tree an then connect the other end to the ceiling. That will keep the tree upright if the cats get too rambunctious.
Answer to:

I send out Christmas cards to my family and friends, an e-card just isn't really the same.

Would you ever vote for a gay Presidential candidate if he/she was qualified for the job? Why or why not?
If they represent views I share and are more qualified than who they are running against, then yes I'd vote for them.
I expect my President to be able to show public discretion about their sex life, and so it doesn't matter to me what they are doing inside their bedroom, as long as it doesn't end up on the news. I also expect their partner to fulfill the role of first spouse...

Really depends on how old the child is... are they 6, 16 or 26. Children mimic, teens rebel and adults should have their own informed opinions.

What kind of skin condition can wait a full month to see the dermatologist? The first two I contacted were booked thru Sept.
I would venture that a great many skin conditions can wait a month to be treated, from acne to rosacea.
If the condition is extremely painful or there are other symptoms, I would see my general physician and if it's warranted, I'm sure he could get me into the dermatologist sooner.

Me & hubby were talking about church tithes he explained how to budget money for this but I misunderstood, he then said that it looked like he has to raise voice for me to understand cus the subtle way was not getting thru, was this harsh to say?
Someone raising their voice doesn't make someone else understand something any better, all it does is make the person being yelled at feel bad. If he was being "subtle" in explaining things, than maybe he should just be more clear and forthright, rather than thinking he has to raise his voice.

Find your interests and passions in life, pursue and follow those and then you will meet like minded people and hopefully one of them will become a love interest. At 17, your world is just opening up, I wouldn't worry too much about meeting someone yet, you still have lots of time ahead of you.

Can I file taxes on the money I put in the collection plate at church?
Donations to a church can be claimed as a charitable deduction, if you itemize, on your tax return. Keep track of your donations. It is best if you can pay by check or if your church can give you a receipt at the end of the year.

In your opinion whats the most important job in america to save.i.e. car manufactures, health care, farming ect.
None. Jobs exist because there is a need to fill. If an industry fails, then that means the need they once filled has gone away and they are no longer needed.
None of the needs you mentioned are going away anytime soon, so if the current industries fail, then new methods and new jobs will arise to fill those needs.

My husband has a cumpulsive-leaving disorder problem. We have an argument and he just runs away without leaving me or our kids a note. Is this a mental disorder, where an adult runs away from problems instead of comfronting them?
I'm guessing that you and your husband have vastly different styles of arguing. If your style is "confrontational" (obviously his isn't) then maybe you need to evaluate how you communicate during an argument.
I personally don't stick around if someone is yelling uncontrollably at me, but that doesn't mean I won't deal with problems, it means I won't...

You may want to amend your return. The profit on the stock sale will also be taxed, but it may be taxed at a different lower rate than your pay. I'd consult a tax preparer, but for $1500 it will be worth it.

California unemployment requires you to report any monies earned when you earn it, even if it's not reported to the IRS yet. On the bi-weekly unemployment claim form, it asks you how much you earned each week and then EDD will adjust your unemployment compensation accordingly. If at some time the state determines that you earned money while on unemployment, and didn't report it,...

No. If you give your employer a W-4, they should be withholding income taxes according to what you specify on it. If you do not give your employer a W-4, the IRS instructs the employer to withhold taxes as if you are single with no allowances.
So if you are single, with no kids, and don't own a home or have other allowances, then this is most likely not an issue for you. If you are...

1099-Misc income is considered self-employment income. You would file a Schedule C (or C-EZ) and your winnings would be the business income, while the entry fees would be your business expenses. Self-employment taxes (Schedule SE) will be owed on the profit made.
Here are the forms: http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=115044,00.html

What paperwork or info do i need for paying taxes as a self-employed r.n.?
As a self-employed RN, you should file a Schedule C or (C-EZ) to declare your business profits and expenses. If you received any 1099-Misc forms from your clients, you would also declare those on the Schedule C as business income. Based on the profit shown on the Schedule C, self-employment taxes will need to be calculated and figured on Schedule SE for attachment with your return.

I have a filing status question- my spouse qualifies to be considered unmarried for the Head of Household filing status. If my spouse files Head of Household status, do I have to file as Married Filing Seperately? I don't believe I qualify as Single.
Yes, you must file as Married Filing Separately. This is not an advantageous status to use and excludes you from some tax credits.
And your spouse can file as Head of Household, assuming you both have been permanently living apart for the last 6 months of the year (not a temporary absence) and your spouse's home was the main home of the dependent.

When I was that age, it was "my parent's house, my parent's rules" and they put the security chain on the door at midnight on the weekdays. If I wasn't home inside by that time, I should just plan on spending the night wherever I was at.

On my W-2s why are my Social Security wages (box 3) larger than my wages (box 1)?
This happens when you have money deducted from your paycheck on a pre-tax basis, like for a 401K or something. If look down in box 12, you should see the difference listed there.
So your box 1 wages are what your income tax will be calculated on, while box 3 is what your Social Security and Medicare tax was calculated.

I am filling an application for a job can someone please tell me what minimum annual salary is and how do i write it up
Minimum annual salary refers to the lowest amount of money you would accept to do the job on a yearly basis.
Generally for business career positions, I tend to go with, "My salary expectation is commensurate with my experience level and can be negotiated during the interview process.".
The moment you put a dollar value down, you will never get an offer higher than that amount...

I'm not sure what you consider an exorbitant amount, but the parent should pay half the cost of raising the child they helped create. And thankfully the courts help determine what that amount is because all too often the non-custodial parent thinks a few hundred dollars is way too much.

Which tax form do I need to provide the childcare provider?
Depending on if the childcare provider is a household employee or is self-employed.
If they are a household employee, you would provide them a standard W2. See Publication 926 for more information (http://www.irs.gov/publications/p926/ar02.html#d0e1384)
If they are self-employed, they should provide you with some information, so that you can claim the childcare tax credit on your return.
Answer to:
What can be done when an ex employer, who's business shut down, refuses to hand over your w2? They are keeping it because they want to question you about the business because they have a lawsuit against another partner.
Contact the IRS and follow the steps outlined here: http://www.irs.gov/faqs/faq/0,,id=199593,00.html
They will send your former employer a letter and then if he doesn't comply within 10 days, you can file a form 4852, which is a substitute W2, but that will delay the processing of your return.

I disagree. I think two people in a serious relationship, especially if it is heading towards marriage, should talk about those topics in particular. If you can't discuss certain things with a person, I feel it limits how far your relationship can go.
Now, when at a party with people you only know slightly, it's probably best to avoid those topics.

Yes. You actually pay less in interest to pay off the house with a 15 year loan. Let's say you were borrowing $100,000 and compare the two.
A 15 year loan at 5% takes 180 monthly payments of $790.79 to pay it off, resulting in total payments of $142,342.85 ($42,342.85 of that being interest charges).
A 30 year loan at 6% takes 360 monthly payments of $599.55 to pay it off,...

If you mean a more socialist welfare system, then yes I agree. If you mean a more socialist economic system, then I disagree, we are a capitalist society and I believe it will stay that way.

It's the next $32,850 (and more) that you spend on cigarettes that will truly be the waste of money.

I havn't fieled income tax in 7 years. I'm sure the IRS owes me money. How do I get copys of my W2's and how do I go about filing ? Will I have to pay any penalties as I don't owe them?
I believe if you have refunds due, then you're okay. If you owe any monies, then you will have penalties and interest. But, I think you can only file for a refund for the last 3 tax years, so don't delay. See a tax professional, they can help you.

Sorry, but since you obviously can do enough math to figure out percentages, you should have figured out what grade you needed a few weeks ago, when there was still an opportunity to do something about it--like study harder. Waiting until after the class is over doesn't seem like the best time to try and do something.

My understanding of probate law is that all estates must go through a probate period, at least here in California. All your information is there, but it's been encrypted to compress the information. For example, if your file has has a line with 25 X's in a row, it will encode that to something like "[25]X" instead of "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX", thereby taking up less space. Unless all three women asked you out at the exact same time, common courtesy would have been to accept or decline the first woman's invite. Then, if you had accepted it, the answer for the other two would have been easy. If you haven't answered them by now, you are doing them a disservice because they could asked someone else to go with them.

If you're like my sister, you won't want to cut it at all. If you're like me, hair comes and hair goes all...

Does corporate america have a "do not hire list"
Nowadays, fail a drug test, have a criminal charge, have a bad credit history, or lie on your job application and you're on a type of "do not hire" list. But that's not the same as a list in the sense of a "blacklist" that you can be put on for no reason. With the economy becoming worse, employers are just being more careful who they hire and checking public...

What's the difference between an electoral vote and a popular vote?
The popular vote is an actual count of the votes cast for each candidate. The electoral vote is the number of representative votes each state casts for the candidate. Larger states have more electoral votes than smaller states do, as it's based on...

It's often sterotyped, that Bush is basically an idiot, no matter what he does. Can you explain how this all started?
While I don't agree with his outlook, I don't think he's an idiot. However, he does not deliver a speech very eloquently. When he gives a speech, he has a tendency to bumble his way through it and make idiotic sounding statements. At the beginning of his term, he did this quite a bit and that's how the perception started I believe.

I'm moving out after graduation. It'd be mean, but I can't help but think about leaving a note for my parents telling them that I never felt accepted by them. They don't accept my lifestyle. Do you think that'd make them change their ways,or just feel bad
I don't know your circumstances, but leaving written notes, that you know will hurt someone, is not usually a good idea--a written note lasts forever and then the hurt will last forever too. People, including parents, only change because they want to change, and hopefully one day they will change and accept your lifestyle, but hurting them won't help that cause.

Can you please give me a sentence with the word 'paradox'? can you also tell me in what kind of situations we have to use this word? give me some examples if possible.
I can't think of a way to use the word, other than to declare that something else is a paradox or when defining the word. For example, you have the barber paradox: The only barber in the village declared that he shaved everyone in the village who did not shave himself. “Who shaves the barber?”

Why is everyone so concerned on how many houses John McCain owns...as long as he paid for them what possible difference would it make on his ability to lead this nation.
I think they are trying to make it seem that if you don't know how many houses you own, how could you possible identify with the average middle class person, many of whom are losing their houses through foreclosure at this time due to bad loan deals.

There is a poet contest online, prize is just a t-shirt. One finalists mother asked me (and 30-40 other online friends & aquaintances) to vote. Is this ethical?
Sure, I see nothing wrong with this. Asking you to go vote, with the hope that you'll vote for them, is fine. Once there, you can vote for them, vote for someone else, or not vote at all.
Politicians ask me to go out and vote every election and they want me to vote for them!

Im 18 and I'm dating a 28 year old . But my parents dont want me to date him. But I feel that age is nothing but a number. We plan on moveing together before the summer is over. Should i follow my heart are go with what my parents say and let it go.
Please talk with your parents more and find out why they don't want you to date him. Listen to them with an open mind, because most parents truly are trying to look out for the best interest of their children and want them to be happy. I would give you this same advice no matter how old you were... if your family and friends don't like your boyfriend, then usually something is not...

What does it mean when a guy says that you "spark his attention a lot" but that there's "just something that pushes him away"?
I would interpret that as, there is something superficial about you that he likes (looks, wit, charm, etc.) but there is something else bigger about you that won't allow him to have a relationship with you and that could be anything and not necessarily something about you directly (i.e., religion or something).

In California, seat belts became required under the theory that a non-seat belt wearer does cause more damage to themselves than someone that wears one and that raises the medical costs of saving that person's life. And the State and Federal government pay the medical bills and lifetime disability payments for those without insurance and those that are under-insured, which is a great many...

What is proper eitquette when we answer Qs & the asker NEVER responds by awarding points or making comments? do those answering
A) Remind the asker?
B) Be stern?
C) Blacklist?
D) Ignore & keep answering the same Asker's Qs?
E) Other?
E) Turn off the ratings notification on your feedback page.

We find out that Palin's 17 year old daughter is pregnant and gonna marry the dad and keep the baby. So much for family values. I guess Palin is not so perfect for the religious right after all..or is it o.k. as long as her politics square with theirs?
To me, it sounds exactly like the "family values" of the 1950s that so many people wistfully wish for again.
All I hope is that the daughter loves the baby's father and is not marrying him because of her mother's politics.

This is a serious question, why is it so wrong for a teenager under 18 and a adult to sleep together?
I believe it is generally because teens under the age of consent are not considered to have the maturity to make informed decisions, whereas the adult should. I'm not sure what "first offenders" is, but I'm guessing it means no jail time for someone arrested the first time and since he was arrested for drugs again while on probation, it doesn't sound like he learned any lessons and will probably not get any breaks this time.

What is the difference between custom and culture?
To me culture is the outlook or way of doing things that is shared by a entire community, while a custom can be a particular ritual that is practice by some of the people in that culture. For example, men and women's roles in society are generally determined by the culture, but how a person's birthday is celebrated (or not celebrated) would be the custom of the particular family.

1-2 years? No way. If that became law then why would anybody continue paying their mortgage when they can live there for free. Interest rates would skyrocket because the banks would have to cover everyone and loans would become near impossible to get. Sounds like a bad idea all the way around to me.

What is the statute of limitations on a credit card? I have had no contact with this company for 5 years and now they want to take me to court. I was served with a summons from Portfolio Recovery Associates. What are my rights?
Ultimately you are responsible for paying your credit card bill as was agreed to in the contract. Just because you ignore them for 5 years, it doesn't make the debt goes away.
Call the collection agency and see what type of deal you can work out; many times, they will accept a percentage of what is owed. If they take you to court, the court will rule that you owe the money unless...

Internet and chat room addiction is real and can be a problem. If the amount of time you spend on it interferes with the rest of your life, you should seek counseling and help.
If you pursue men that much older than you in real life too, then there could be legal problems for him and you if you hook up. Be careful and let's hope you don't hook up with that 40 year old pervert...

Can a job reduce your pay? Is it illegal to raise your pay and then reduce it less than it was before?
In most of the USA, if you are not covered by a written work contract, e.g., through a union, then you are considered an "at will" employee--which means an employer can terminate or change the terms of your employeent when they want, just as you can quit when you want.
Unfortunately, if the economy keeps going south, I'm afraid we'll see more of this.

My grown son lost his job in January, still unemployed but uses my address for his mail. The auto repo person has been calling my home in the middle of the night asking for my dumb son. How do I stop this, short of hiring an attorney?
If your son doesn't actually live there, tell the repo guy that and that he should not call your number anymore since it's not your son's number.
Additionally, I thought that bill collectors could only contact you during certain hours, like before 9pm. That you may want to look into and then you can threaten him with some action if he calls in the middle of the night again.

Do you think breaking the AB etiquette, like having a questions/answer/comments count of 806/202/80 and/or <60% + ratings given, should lead to a visit in the PB in extreme cases?
No, I don't think anyone should be PB'd solely on their Q&A statistics. Good grief. Stupid, silly and badly worded questions/answers are no reason to PB someone either.
Some people like to ask questions, some people like to answer them, and some like to moderate for points. And if someone wants to sit around and down rate every question they see, then that is their choice,...

If all the kids live with you, then I think if any of the kids go, then all the kids should go.
Obviously life has changed with the marriage and if she's going to keep old promises, then she needs to make compromises for the new situation. I would suggest either her and her son go alone or all of you go as a family. Leaving one kid out seems so unfair.

Are sports pants like sweatpants or windpants any cooler then jeans. I work in a shipping facility and were required to wear pants but alot of people have been wearing those nylon sports pants. Is it worth getting some of are they not really much better
If you're looking for cooler pants, I'd look for pants made of "wicking" material rather than nylon. Wicking material, like Coolmax, draws sweat away from you, thereby keeping you cooler. Most higher end sporting good stores will carry them, brands like Northface or Columbia. I use them when hiking and they work great, but they aren't cheap.

Why do we not have to save changes to database files, in the same way that we do with word processing, spreadsheet & other kinds of files?
When accessing a database through an application, the application handles the save for the user. So for instance, when you click "submit" on your question, the submit is performing the database insert and therefore saving your data for you.
If the person is inserting data into the database directly via SQL, then the user needs to perform a commit, which will then save the data.

When it comes to my financial well being, I tend to look first (I like living in a house and being able to eat). With the rest of life, I tend to float with the wind, so I've ended up in some "how did I get here" situations, but I don't tend to the reckless side.

Is it harder for you to ask for help or say I'm sorry? Why is that?
It's hard for me to ask for help. I have a less than desirable family and since family is who you normally go to for help, I have bad experiences with it. And after not getting help when you do ask, you just learn to take care of yourself and with that baggage, it's really hard for me to ask friends for help, for fear they'll say no too.
I have lots of practice at saying...

Hey anyone of you have experience ordering stuff online, target has a ship to the store type of thing but i dont know how to use it?
I've used ship to the store at REI before and it works great. Just order as normal, and during the check out they'll ask you to identify the store you want it shipped to. When it arrives, they'll notify you and you bring your email in and pick it up (at least it works that way at REI). Most ship to the store for free, so it saves you shipping costs.

Why are some questioners cheap with the points, like they have to write a check for every point they give?
When I first started here at AB, I "thought" you gave points to the best or most correct questions and answers ONLY, so that people could judge the validity and worthiness of the answer.
Of course, I've now learned different, the points don't really correlate the quality of the questions and answers, they seem more like a game. So, it could be other newbies still under...

If she didn't care about whether he was "real" or not while they were "dating" for a year (although, I'm not sure how you do that without meeting), then why worry now about whether he is "real" or not.
Sounds like your friend needs a reality check and should try dating locally, the kissing is much better if you can actually touch the person! :)

"Everything is relative." I have heard that so many times, and yet I wonder -- is that statement absolutely true? If not, then do you see that as a potentially offensive, if not impotent, answer to all of life's questions?
I think it's a valid answer to a lot of statements, but not necessarily for all. For instance 2 plus 2 is 4, always and without being relative to anything else. But, saying "$2 is a good wage" is relative to where you live and how much that amount of money buys you. So in some developed countries, it is not considered a good hourly wage, but in some underdeveloped countries...

Sorry, but I think that unless she asked you if her baby bump was visible and whether she should tell people, that it was awful presumptuous of you to give your opinion.

Only if the same dress code applies to everyone. No revealing cloths for thin or young people either. No belly shirts for anyone, no underwear hanging out of pants for anyone, no spandex for anyone, etc. We can go back to the 1950s and dress that way again if you like. :D

If you still like gymnastics, and just feel stressed because you're being pushed hard to improve, maybe consider going down a level for a set period of time and see how you feel about it then. So, if you do high level competitions, maybe only do lower level ones for 6 months or so (sorry, I don't know how the gymnastics world organizes their things). I'm guessing at one time...

And just like in real life, some acquaintances never become more than that. So, yes, I believe in net...

I know someone who worked 84 hours last week and the IRS took over 32% of her money for taxes. It's no wonder our kids turn to drug dealing and stealing to try to make money, at least it's tax free. Am I the only one that sees this as unfair?
Well, if we didn't have people breaking the laws, like drug sellers and thieves, the government wouldn't need so much of my hard-earned money to build and pay for their jail cells.
Seriously, working one extra long week throws a person into overtime pay and that throws them into another tax bracket because taxes are calculated as if you'll earn that much money every week....

I was suspended from my job with no pay, while they investigate. not a criminal matter, doesnt this deny me due process of law?
Most states in the USA operate under "employment at will" laws, which means that an employer can terminate you or you can quit without any cause or reason. Employers are required to follow any guidelines they have published in their employee manuals; so as long as they are following the company's guidelines, you most likely don't have any recourse.

A student gets their cell phone taken away in a school that has a no cell phone policy. Is it an invasion of privacy if any staff/faculty look through what's on the phone with no reason to?
That sounds like an invasion of privacy to me. If the school doesn't have a policy, they shouldn't be able to take your phone away. If a teacher asks you to turn it off, the student should oblige and if they don't then the student should be disciplined for not cooperating, which I'm sure there would be a policy about.
And even if the teacher does take the phone away,...

Do you think its weird to ask a 3 year old girl if anyone ever touches her "down there"?
Unless it's an investigation for a suspected crime, I would broach the subject differently with a child. Start having discussions about "private body parts" and that if anyone touches you to tell mom, dad, and everyone. I'm sure there are parenting articles on how to begin making a child aware. You don't want to cause psychological issues unnecessarily. :)

In the USA, employers can read your emails on the grounds that it is on their server machines and they own them. It's always been that way, not just with the heightened national security measures.

If you see an ad for an Estate sale would you be more inclined to go to it over a Yard sale? If so, why? I ask this because I am about to have a huge sale from my moms house and we have everthing from clothes to antiques to collectibles etc.
An estate sale says higher-end and a wider choice of items will be available for sale because of a death in the family and the house is being emptied. A yard sale seems more bargain-hunter like to me and that there's less choice of what is offered.
If there is furniture, jewelry and antiques, I would advertise it as an estate sale myself.

Yes, scars in all those places! LOL
Most of my scars either came from a severe cat attack that happened a long time ago or from my mountain hiking exploits.

If you're trying to make a case for using the British spelling of words, then I think it would a stronger case if you used British spelling and terminology for "all" of the words, and not just "some" of them. :/
Other than that, if it lent authenticity to the essay to spell particular words with an alternate spelling, then I don't think it should be...

With your son not having seen the mother in at least a year, or more, I would hope that he insists on a paternity test before having his name put on the birth certificate.

Is it better for your credit rating to take out a personal loan to consolidate your debt and tke it off your credit cards or doesn't it matter either way? debt is debt?
Your FICO score, a credit rating measurement, is calculated as follows:
* Payment history - 35%
* Amounts owed - 30%
* Length of credit history - 15%
* New credit - 10%
* Types of credit used - 10%
So 30% of your rating comes from the amount owed, whether it's owed to one company or more. Consolidating your credit can be a good thing, _if_ you can get a good interest rate _and_...

If your partner cheated on you. Why stay with them? I mean they have no respect for you or your relationship. They are lying to your face and cry tears to you to justify themselves.
WHY STAY?
Maybe for the kids, maybe for the financial stability, maybe because the devil you know is better than the unknown.
People have all kinds of reasons for staying in a situation that I may not find tolerable. Some of their reasons will make sense, some won't, but because it is them who has to suffer through the changes in their life, it is up to them to decide what's acceptable...

I believe that war has historically been good for the USA economy, not morally good, but economically good. If there is a recession at home and people are losing their jobs, then the people coming home from war could end up unemployed too.

No, it doesn't bother me. I usually have multiple chats going and so do they. But I don't generally use IM to discuss important things. If I want someone's undivided attention, we put on the webcam, which changes the dynamics because you are speaking instead of writing and speaking is just more urgent than reading and writing.

I quit smoking in 1998 after smoking for 25 years. I quit cold turkey with no aids and I found it relatively easy to quit because I had decided I truly wanted to quit. I'd rate my experience as a 3 on your scale of 10. There were urges, but nothing physically overwhelming, it was more habit and mental. The key is truly wanting to quit for yourself and not because someone else wants you...

You make it sound like there is only one voice telling us what to do...

Why do people assume that teens who dont work are lazy? i have been looking for a job for months now. i dont enjoy being penniless but people dont seem to realise the barriers teens actually face
I don't look at anyone who is in school as being lazy. But good luck in your job search since you want to get one. :)

Answer to:
Do you ever just come across people that rub you up the wrong way? what do you do in those situations?
For sure, can't imagine anyone who hasn't come across someone like that. If I can avoid them I can, if I can't avoid them, I try to keep our interaction at a very polite and distant level.
Answer to:
Do you think people here on AB tell the truth?
I think that most of the people do and there are some that don't. For whatever reason, online communities always have people that will lie or exaggerate about themselves in order to gain attention or cause mayhem because they find it fun. I've seen it in every online community I've ever been in; I personally don't get it, but oh well.

If you are invited somewhere and you don't want to go do you feel it's okay to make up an excuse (lie) to not hurt the person's feelings by saying...you just don't wanna go?
I don't tend to lie or make up phony excuses. I just say "Thanks for the invite, but I can't make it, maybe another time." and that usually works just fine.
But, if they press for a reason, I just keep saying "I have other plans.", and don't go into more detail. My plans basically are to spend my time some other way, even if that is just watching TV. :D

Justify your exsistence. Why do you deserve to keep on living?couldn't there be better people than you, what have you done of any value to anyone except yourself?
WoW, that's one heck of a question. I don't feel I have to justify my existence, but I do provide value to other people in my life just by being a friend to them. That may not seem like much value to some, but it is to the person that needs a friend's help or shoulder to lean on--I know I value my friends because they are there for me.

Do you agree with me that technology is so rapidly outpacing our philosophy, ethics etc that we should declare a 100 year moratorium (punishable by death) on all science to allow the humanities - and Humanity - to catch up?
No, I don't agree. I feel philosophy is a way of explaining our current understanding of the world and as it changes philosophy changes too. Ethics are guidelines of how people should deal with things. And a lot of ethical issues are raised and discussed long before the situation comes to be--for example cloning of human beings. Many ethical decisions come after something has gone...

Normally the USA is 5-8 hours, depending on location, behind the UK; however I don't believe the UK has started Daylight Savings time yet, so there is a 4-7 hour (or is it 6-9 hour?) difference right now.

Answer to:
Is environmentalism a replacement for religion?
No. Religion is the belief in a set of fundamental ideas concerning the nature and purpose of the universe and agreed upon by a group of people who share the same rituals and observe the same practices. Environmentalism really has none of these things.

What would you do if Answerbag ceased to exist?
I'd have to check back a few times to make sure it really is gone, and then I'd move on with life. This isn't the first online community I've joined, and I'm sure it won't be the last.

Answer to:
Is it ok to see a shrink at a community cope center,at a place where they actually keep people locked up? Would I be better off going to a regular office? The cope center is cheaper, i'm just worried about getting locked up for my self cutting and harm.?
I would call the center and ask them whether they lock people up for self cutting. I somehow don't think they would--unless you are cutting in an extreme way that could cause your death. From what little I know of self cutting, it's generally done to feel the pain, not to cause death. I'm glad you are considering getting counseling. :)

What is the #1 rule around your house?
No red stuff in the living room--Kool-aid is restricted to the kitchen and bleeding must be done outside!
And I kid you not, this really was the main rule when the boys lived there.

I'm 5'5 and weigh 152 pounds. I know that's a little overweight but I'm afraid to lose weight as I like my shape. There's an 11 inch difference between my waist and hips and 10 between my breasts and waist. Would my measurements change?
Only you can decide how the health risks associated with being slightly overweight compare to the self-esteem benefits of feeling good about your body.
Personally, I'd be happy to be in your position. :D

When a mother is non-catholic and the father is a catholic, and they have children out of wedlock, the mother does not wish to have the children baptised ,is the father allowed to go ahead and get them baptised without and against the mother`s wishes.
Since a baptism is a commitment, by parents who actively practice Catholicism, to raise the child according to the Catholic faith, I'd think you'd want the mother's agreement to raise the child Catholic.

How many calories do you need a day to survive?
It depends on the person's size and metabolism, but I've always heard that 800 calories per day is considered a starvation diet, so more than that.

Is this an Opinionated Site? Because Apparently i can't give anyone Opinions without someone DR'ing me. I don't care that they DR me but i am getting tired of not being able to give a damn opinion on here.
I haven't been noticing your opinions in particular, but maybe you have one person after you or something--I have noticed a lot of that on this site lately, people being targeted by someone.
If your opinions are given politely with respect to others, I would continue in that vein and know that there are many more who appreciate a good opinion.

Answer to:
The show "moment of truth"...first of all, why would anyone go on this show? Second, why would someone lie and lose the money? Either way, their family knows the real answer, so why not tell the truth and at least get the cash!
I've wondered that too... I can only think that maybe they feel they can convince their family that the lie detector was wrong and that what they said was the real truth. People are apt to believe what they want to believe, so family would probably believe the better version.
