Does melatonin really help you to dream more? Has anyone ever experimented with melatonin in varying dosages or combined with other supplements to be able to dream more?
I wasn't aware melatonin actually affected reams, to be honest, only about it's effect on the actual sleeping/falling asleep process. Still, it's one of those things that's incredibly difficult to examine critically, as the 'normal' level varies from individual to individual.

Having just studied this, I know that thee are a number of theories that support this idea. However in practice there is not enough evidence to suggest that an unstable home life is linked to crime itself.
'Unstable home life' is a phrase that immediately conjures up images of run-down areas of the inner cities, slums, ghettos etc. However, this is not the case at all, an unstable...

When your heart beats fast when you're nervous... is it essentially 'good for you' like a workout? Before getting my wisdom teeth pulled, the doc noticed how scared I was and said I was getting a pretty good workout because of my heartbeat.
Nah, the doc was probably trying to put you at ease. The basic stress response in humans releases cortisol and small amounts of adrenaline (or larger depending on the stressor). This increases the heartrae and it was thought by Selye for a long time that such a response would use up 'resources', ie. calories. This has, however, been disproven.

Depends. a) how old are you and b) how close friends are you? I nearly lost a now dear friend because I had a crush on her despite the face that it could never work, and i acted anyway. The age thing isn't too much of an issue, but it may be a problem if for example you'll see her every day at school/college.

No job & obese = irrelevant.
However, diamonds, nails, insurances etc = your friend needs to wise up to reality and go for a man with substance other than his wallet.

I find it sad that the term "gay" is used pejoratively. Do you agree?
While i understand what you mean I would not say I find it particularly sad. It is just a reflection of how society works, and may well be wheedled out if homosexuality becomes such a trodden-around subject as say race is. Until then I feel that there is very little that can be done about it, and so little point on dwelling on it, no offense intended.

i don't know about the others on here but I personally lost my virginity at 15. If you feel you are ready, then you feel you are ready and certainly at that age you are more likely to go with what you feel is right.

What do men think of stretchmarks? Will you have sex with a woman who has stretch marks? Answer honestly.
Why not? Any guy who would think otherwise is not worth the bother, and not because of a 'shallow' level, as this denotes that stretchmarks are a negative thing. is it not possible that many men would find such a think highly beautiful, as they are symbolic of a life being bought into the world and therefore a highly beautiful and erotic thing?

Why do you think it is so easy for some of us to stereotype and generalize while others of us feel very uncomfortable and find it distasteful to do so?
I find that it is generally the more closed-minded who will generalise and stereotype against a person's race/religion/social status etc. Not 3 hours ago I was in my local pub and at the bar I heard a woman say to her friend:

I am 16 and i used to MSN a 14 Y/O girl.. and we both wanted sex, but she lived a country away. what are the laws surrounding this? can i be charged for something like.. 'Intent of staturtorie rape'?
It depends on your country's laws (or hers as well, I guess, depending on which country you were in) and only if you actually had sex. I don't think there's any law about wanting sex and discussing it, especially as there is a very low age gap. If you actually had sex, it's another matter, although most of my mates, and myself, lost their virginity at the age of 14-15, so I...

Like most men I get an erection several times during the night and especially upon waking up. We sleep nude and often without sheets on the bed when it's hot. Should I hide the erection from my GF, or is it OK to let it happen and not feel embarassed?
I think most men get them in the night. My gf tells me I do, but as long as it isn't pushing her off the bed, I don't think it'll be an issue for her :P As long as she doesn't assume it's you wanting sex a gazillion times a night :P

Good ways to gain confidence?
Personally, leaving home gave me the best confidence I've ever had. At university, I'm totally self-sufficient and have to fight my own battles for the first time in my life. My only real link to home is my girlfriend, as myself and my parents seem to very different people, and the year before I moved out was just pure frustration. Therefore, believing you can look after yourself...

Why won't God heal amputees?
Assuming that God exists, he is well known for testing people, especially in the Old Testament, ie. Moses. It's possible, by this viewpoint that this would be one of God's challenges. For the record, I'm sorry if this causes any offense to those with other ideas, and that also I used to be a Christian before I became Pagan.

It's very probable that she kept it a secret because she felt ashamed or that it was somehow her fault, as has been said by many victims of rape at a young age, especially during early puberty. Should Wicca be taught in the public school system? Why or why not?
I don't believe any one religion should be taught in schools. I went to a C of E primary school (Church of England, btw.) and all I knew was Christianity for many years. It's essentially telling kids what they should believe, not giving them a choice. Therefore, it would be far better if the concept of religion was taught, but not particular faiths.

Ok people, If I said I think Wiccans are silly what you you say to me? (Insults accepted)
To be honest, Wicca isn't a "religion" in the conventional sense of the word. It's certainly not organised, as there is no Bible-like book, nor an official church in many places. There are temples in some towns, but very few know about them. It's a faith practiced by many, and is based on old values, beliefs and traditions. Wicca is very similar to Celtic paganism,...

Ok people, If I said I think Wiccans are silly what you you say to me? (Insults accepted)
I'd say of any faith, Wiccans are the least silly, you don't see them causing holy wars because of minute differences in their religions. There are many, many types of Pagan, and they all live together happily (this is coming from a Celtic Pagan who has Norse, Wiccan and Druid friends).

How long does the average dream last?
Experiments have shown that the average REM dreams (ie, the ones you are more likely to remember) last, on average, for 5 minutes or so. However, they have been seen to last for 15 minutes, and theoretically could last for about 20 minutes, as this is the amount of time you spend in REM sleep per episode. These episodes occur every 90 minutes or so.

Which episode of MASH do you think is the most political or has the best political message?
I think the finale of season 3 (I won't give it away!) shows the great message of how people were so easily lost, especially as everyone just has to carry on operating after they hear the news.
The one where Hawkeye's held at gunpoint to save the Korean soldier's friend struck a poignant note, especially when he helps to dig the grave.
Answer to:
Are reruns of M*A*S*H still relevant? Does this old TV series say anything about today's armed conflicts?
I think the later series (6 onwards or so) are still very relevent, as they had more of a message. The old ones were still good, but I think it got better with time, especially with the introduction of BJ and Winchester, who had far more depth than the childish Trapper and whiny Frank. Also, it was far better when Hawkeye and Hot Lips put their differences aside after her divorce :)

Answer to:
Charles Emerson Winchester or Frank Burns, who was better?
Winchester wins hands down, especially in the later series's where you see he's not the pompous upper-middle class buffoon you think he is, like when he keeps a vigil with Hawkeye, or gives the presents to the orphans. Much more depth to the character than Burns :)

From a pagan point of view, what is the spiritual significance of Autumn Equinox?
Autumn Equinox is a festival to celebrate the end of summer, and to revel in the harvest to prepare for the new year. If you want a Celtic slant as well, the God has by this point become John Barleycorn, and so will be sacrifice himself so that others may eat to live. He will return next year on Yule, when the Goddess gives birth to the new child.

Amnesia is generally one of two types: retrograde, where a person forgets things before a certain point, and another type, where memories after a certain point dissapear.
Amnesia targets the conscious part of the brain, which results in memory loss. However, language, motor skills and the like are stored in the unconscious, where the amnesia does not target.
In other words, language is so...

My girlfriend does a similar thing, but just wants to be left alone for a bit. In a few hours, or even within 20 minutes, she feels loads better and wants to talk it out. It took me a long time to work this out, and lots of unnecessary arguments and harsh words could have been avoided.
Just let him have his space, and he'll always come back.

Are people born gay?
It is possible that homosexuality could be a genetic thing, but there is no evidence for a particular gene, no real evidence with mono zygotic twin studies, and so this doesn't quite work.
Psychologically, it could be "learned" by connecting either with males and so eventually finding them sexual or with females, and so developing straight female ideals (ie. men). This may...

I assume you're just starting out. Me too :) I couldn't find much on the internet, but these books were really helpful:

The Spiral Dance by Starhawk
If you live in England (South-West in particular),try to get yourself to Glastonbury, and look around the shops and bookshops. Very good atmosphere and culture :)

Answer to:
Where did pagan originate
Paganism is pretty much the oldest recorded religion. There is evidence (especially near where I live, the South West of England) that stone-age peoples celebrated similar festivals, and the 8 Sabbats (especially the Summer/Winer Equinoxes) are celebrated in many places.
Native American religion, such as the sun dance, ghost dance, rituals and circles also link in with Pagan ideas. Indeed,...

Males: without any conversations with your wife or partner, would you go through pregnancy to save her the pain? (Don’t males have a higher pain threshold?)
let's be honest, no-one can ever know who has the higher pain threshold, and so it's a silly argument. But yes, I would trade places with my girlfriend if she were pregnant.

Have you heard of the Milgram experiment? How ethical do you think it is? Here's the info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment also, search youtube for videos of it. Creepy.
The Milgram experiment certainly has its ethical concerns, but I believe the benefits to psychology outweigh this. By use of a cost:benefit ratio, myself and a fellow student discussed that while there were obvious ethical issues of deception and possible psychological harm to participants, there were a number of benefits:
1) The participants were immediately debriefed, and had the right to...

I love my boyfriend with all my heart, but I always have second thoughts about not wanting to be with him or being with other people. But I feel like I'll be lost without him. What should I do?
Surely every relationship has doubts, especially when there is so much commitment and vulnerability. However, if you feel you can't be without him, that is your answer. There is always the test - go on holiday by yourself or something for about a week, and you'll see how much you'll miss him and want him and need him. Me and my girlfriend had a bit of a rough patch, but sorted it...

If you need to get even, you obviously haven't forgiven him. Yo doing this will only make things worse, and there will be a mutual disdain. The relationship will become unbearable. If you can't forgive him, don't stoop to his pathetic level and just ditch the tosser.

There's a chance, certainly, but the fact he never "finished" means there's less of a chance.
Wait this was asked last July. I guess you know by now huh? What was the outcome?

If people ask if it's possible to have gotten pregnant when they had sex, protection, or not, do you really think these people should be having sex?
Of course, there are exceptions, but when it's "My girlfriend didn't move at all during sex, can she get pregnant" or something similar, there is a definite concern for the poor little possible childlets. In which case, they should keep their trousers on and do the crossword instead.

What makes some people get addicted to drugs while others just dont? I've done a lot of different drugs but never felt like i needed any of them. some friends who have done less than me are obsessed and pretty much plan their lives around them.
Addiction to drugs can be to do with personalities, but is also to do with hormones. I have also studied psychology, and learned that even behaviours such as golfing can become "addictive". This is because of a hormone called dopamine, which gives a feeling of happiness when it has high levels. Dopamine is released with any pleasurable activity, and has been linked with addiction to...

What right do you have to split them up? If they are head over heels for each other, then it's none of your business if they want to get married at such a young age. Granted it's not a wise move, but you can't assume that you have a right to make your buddy see more of the world. Maybe he's seen all he wants and needs to.

Answer to:
How do you get over the one person you love with all your heart and why does it hurt so much?
Go out with your friends o the pub or to a club or something. Cry in the night. Go out and do something you've never done before. Taking your mind off it won't make it go away, but for the first few days, keep yourself occupied. Then you'll realise the crying has stopped. The hurt may still be there, but once the crying has stopped, you will know you are on the mend. Hang in there!
Answer to:
What do you do when your heart hurts?
My previous habit was to drink lots of beer, but it only makes you feel rubbish in the morning and nothing's changed. Probably good that I realised that at a young age :) Cry, watch a few good movies, chocolate. It's not just for girls, as a guy, i found that those things helped really well :)

Surely sex was told to be a sin in the Bible because there was little contraception (or none at all for the Catholics) and illegitimacy was not accepted by society. I'm rather skeptical about dream analysis, simply because it seems to contradict itself so much, but I'll have a stab at it.
Freud's approach to dream analysis suggests that dreams include symbols about what is troubling the mind, things which are lodged in the subconscious mind. Therefore, these people in your dream may be representing something...

Psychologically speaking, dreams are something we forget naturally. After we enter REM sleep during the night, we begin to dream about 80% of the time, but only remember 1 or 2 dreams. This is because people have sleep amnesia, and the dreams we remember are usually from the last period of REM sleep.
If the dreams you are trying to forget are frequent night terrors or nightmares, I'd...

Don't worry if you don't remember any dreams, it doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you. When we dream, we experience REM and NREM sleep. During REM, parts of your brain and eyes are active; more so than when you are conscious (kinda paradoxical eh?)but the rest of your body is paralyzed. In NREM, brain waves are much lower, and dreams are less frequent, so most dreams...

It wasn't until women got the vote that women started to gain power, and in the 1920's, Flappers and Vamps began to appear, showing the female as a sensual being. Because our basic mental architecture is just that: basic. Is it against the human male's nature to be monogamous? In other words, is it against his true nature to only have one partner for life, one "mate" to which he has to be faithful?
Just to be a pain in the arse science geek, a theory put forward by a bloke named Miller states that humans were never promiscuous (eg. anything goes, males copulate with every female in sight), but were more polygynous (males had a number of female partners.) The evidence for this was by comparing size and weight of human, chimp and gorilla testicles, and amount of sperm per ejaculation....

I'm a black belt in Tae kwon do, and he was a skrawny creature, but if someone has a knife near your head, you don't mess with them....

When was the last game that you've attended? What and who was it?
Washington Caps vs. Sharks... not sure where they're from, and in February of this year. But I'm English, so I don't get much chance to go :P Damn, it was fun though.

What was the Anti-Saloon League?
The Anti-Saloon League was a group of (mostly) evangelicals, who supported Prohibition of alcohol. A prominant member, Carrie A. Nation was renowned for going into bars and smashing them with a hatchet she carried. The Anti-Saloon League sought to shut down bars and saloons across the country.

I have been married for 15 years.prior to me, he had a girlfriend. He recently saw her at the bar and bailed her out of a sticky situation. Now when she sees him,she tries to hit up on him. I am jealous. should I be? she thinks he likes her now&I hate her
I can understand your motives for being jealous, but is there a need to worry? She may think your husband likes her, but if he doesn't surely there is no worry of anything going on. Perhaps calmly voice your concerns to your husband at an appropriate moment, making clear your dislike of his ex, and hopefully he will respond by sorting out the situation.

In your family, who is the happiest, and how can I be more like them?
I'm supposing the thrust of this question is "How can I be happier," no? If so, the only person who can make you happier is yourself. Firstly, you will need to work out what it is that makes you unhappy, and conquer the problems. Every issue has a solution, and by looking carefully at your options, you will find that a lot less is wrong with your life than what you previously...

If it were possible to eliminate bias/favoritism from all decision-making, would you be happy with that or do you like things just the way they are?
Ah right, I see what you mean (sorry, i'd leave it in the comments, but I can't get a confirmation e-mail, I think it's cos I use Hotmail.) Thanks for the warm welcome :)

But surely by eliminating favouritism, you could not make any decisions, as you could not favour one side over the other, and so any decisions made were out of necessity, and don't actually bring a sense of joy or accomplishment.

I'm 15 and I've been having sex but not intercourse just like foreplay and touching, is that ok?
Asking a question like that is always risky, as there will be people with different views. There is no "right" or "wrong" or "OK" when it comes to this, just your judgement. The fact you posted this question on an internet forum would suggest you have doubts in your mind, and therefore are not ready for the responsibilities that come with foreplay/sex etc.

I like this girl, I’m 15, we both like each other, her friend told me she was waiting for me to ask her out. But I never asked a girl out before. When she says yes, she is then considered my girlfriend? Or do we actually have to go on a date? Thanks...
I'd say yeah, a date would be a good idea, but it doesn't have to be extravagant (especially as you're only 15). Anyways, dates are great fun, and you really get to know each other in a different light.
Answer to:
I am fourteen and have never had a girlfriend in my life. Is this okay?
Nah matey, nothing wrong with that. I had my first girlfriend when I was 15, and I know people who didn't have one until they were 18/19. There's nothing to worry about.

I am 15 and my bf is 17 and I want a baby and he dont so I have decied to start to break holes in his condoms so i can get pregnant and have my child and that way he can be linked always. My friend says this is a bad idea what do you guys think?
Seriously, what he hell kind of a question is that? You won't be "linked always" as soon as he finds out you've been poking holes in his condoms, you'll end up alone with a child, won't finish your education as you have to look after the poor sprog, and wind up in a terrible mess which will be your life. It's an utterly stupid idea, and I don't really see...

Would a person be called a homo if they no physical attraction to their own sex but looked at them often in pictures and etc.?
It depends. Depending on where you are, the company you keep etc. then perhaps so, yes. But it should not matter if you are called homosexual. If there is nothing sexual about it then it is more just a healthy curiosity, and so there is nothing to worry about. Also, what you do on your time is your business, and if you're uncomfortable with other people knowing your business, just...

What should you wear to PE to be energized
Wearing clothes to PE to be energized is far more of a mindset than actual science. If you feel more energized of your running shorts and t shirt, go for it. If you'd rather wear a fluffy tutu, fairplay, though expect giggling. You are only as energized as you let yourself feel, so feeling comfortable and free when doing PE wil definately help.
Answer to:
Have you ever envy other races, like Gipsys, Africans, Native Americans, Jews, Arabs, because of their different abilities, talents, etc.?
Depends what you mean by abilities/talents. These people are no different to you or I, they have just learned different cultures and different ways of life. Anyone could learn these ways, there are no "special" abilities. We are all human, and have the same abilities.
Answer to:
Does the presence or absence of light have any effect at all on the blind? I recall reading that light also enters our nervous system through an alternative pathway and affects, I think, the pineal gland.
You're kind of right. Light does not enter the pineal gland, but rather the pineal gland reacts to different proteins around the body which are stimulated by light. The pineal gland controls the release of melatonin, which controls our sleeping patterns, and light will repress melatonin levels, keeping us awake (which is why humans find it easier to sleep at night). One experiment showed...

Why is it that if a woman makes a witticism of a derrogatory or sexist nature, about men in general, most people (including men) laugh and find humor; however, if a man does the same, he is often times berated?
This is, I would say, because women were, for a long time, classed below men. It is in the same principle as if a black comedian makes fun of a white man, it's acceptable, but if a white comedian makes fun of a black man, he is "racist". Because women went through hardships of inequality for centuries, it is acceptable for them to make fun of a man in a sexist way, but men making...

What is the difference between classical and operant conditioning?
Classical conditioning is where one thing is "programmed" into the brain, and is associated with another. See Pavlov's dog experiment for a nice example. This can be anything relating to anything, and is thought to have a lot to do with irrational phobias.
Operant conditioning, or operant learning, is where something is learned by the consequences, and if more of a...

Evolutionarily speaking, how did dolphins evolve to have unilateral sleep, as surely they would have previously drowned in their sleep before having a chance to breed, so therefore can natural selection have played a part?
OK, maybe I worded my question badly. My question is simply how could unilateral sleep occur through evolution if the dolphins had drowned before they could breed? They had to sleep before they were sexually mature, and unless they could stay at the surface, they would have drowned. Therefore, how can natural selection/evolution occur if the species has no way of reproducing?
