As opposed to just staying home and turning the lights offs? No. But if you are going to drive a few hours and watch yourself a Nascar race for the weekend...then camping is probably better.

For our family camping, we have a Kelty Yellowstone. On the AT, we used the Kelty Vortex. On the Long Trail, we used a Moonbow custom pack/tent, and before it all, we used an old LL Bean 4 season. The yellowstone is a nice big family car camping tent, but it is still light enough to carry out...

You said you thought KOAs were too expensive. I would like to suggest state parks. A lot of them have all the hook ups as KOAs and they are generally quite less expensive. They will not all have the swimming pools, but they make up for it by each being unique to one another. Happy Trails!
