Answer to:
I heard an astonishing statistic yesterday. Eight out of ten Americans have a favorable opinion of Barack Obama and want him to succeed. So what do you think is going on with those two out of ten who don't?
There are dueling philosophies involved. Look under Reagan-Bush-Bush we have seen the national debt grow about $9 trillion dollars. We've had Iran-Contra, 9/11, major recession, 3 wars, stagnant wages, seen the virtual disappearance of savings on the whole (Americans are spending what they earn and then some), our education system fall behind, etc.
The Clinton era saw economic growth, a...

How much time are you going to give President Barack Obama to prove himself?
Until what? No offense but I am sure many people are happy that today is W.'s last day in office, a man that we didn't elect in 2000, may not have elected in 2004 (Ohio!), whom we have on the whole disagreed with for years, and who kept right on doing what he damn well felt like doing.
I don't think it much matters how long I give him.
Answer to:
IF HAMAS' ONLY AGENDA, AND THEY CLEARLY DO STATE, THEIR AGENDA IS THE DESTRUCTION OF ISRAEL WHY SHOULD ISRAEL HAVE ANY COMPASSION AT ALL. iF SOMEONE WAS TRYING TO KILL MY CHILDREN, I WOULD KILL THEM FIRST,
First, you're confusing the state of Israel with the people who live there. Second, you're confusing Palestinians with Hamas. Not everyone supports the US war in Iraq, but our military forces are still there, does that make us fair targets? Third, because God commands it. Thou shalt not murder is straightforward. Offing civilians for military purposes is murder.

Why, when you ask a religious person to proove there is a god, do they say, "proove there isn't"? Why can't they just answer the question?
You've got to keep in mind also that not everyone is super adept at dialectic arguments. I see a lot of good answers here but I think it's important to note the difference between asking a random parishioner and asking the pastor. Many people believe in God but are not graced with tremendous powers of ratiocination that would enable them to build up a strong point by point case. They...

Answer to:
Does America have any soul?
America's got both. We are a nation that worships God. We are a nation that worships money. We are a country that will go to war to steal land and resources. And we are a nation whose people will support a war just because it's right.
So, yes, America has a soul. I think we've got plenty of both, the good souls and the evil ones.

Yes, of course they should be off limits. Lots of people should be off limits to the paparazzi. Their creepy voyeur appeal is unsettling, whether you are Britney Spears (whom they had fun devouring) or the child of a famous person.

Right or wrong for the benefit of the working middle class do you think lobbyist should be banned from our government?
No. I think paid TV ads should be banned. Rather than allowing candidates and the DNC and RNC to run paid ads, tv stations should be mandated to give equal time to the listed candidates (even 3rd party ones) during primary and general elections.

It'll be tough. The country now has a staggering debt (made all the more amazing when you consider that Clinton left Bush with a solid economy and budget surpluses...just 8 years ago our government took in more than it spent, now we have an estimated 1.2 trillion dollar debt for next year...that's just staggering) that will negatively impact long term interest rates, those rates being...

Are we rehashing the same confusion of Clinton's early days? What do I think about this idea? Nothing. I don't care. It's a minor issue of little importance that shouldn't distract the public from the issues that really matter.
Less sensationalism and side stories, more focus on issues that matter.

I think it's a glimpse of an uphill battle for Obama. Add in the complaints about Panetta from his own party and it adds up to trouble.

It bothers me. Back in '98 baseball fans, owners and broadcasters were excited about McGwire & Sosa and their HR battles. What are good insults for mean people?
My favorite burn was a quote from basketball player Tim Duncan in response to a mediocre player's comment that Tim was too soft. Tim said, paraphrased slightly (probably): Peace to him, he's the best basketball player I've ever seen.
So if someone insults you, you can use that formula and turn it around pretty easily. I love sarcastic hyperbole as part of an insult.

Everytime I see my ex-gf with her new bf, I physically want to collapse it hurts so bad. The pain is so intense and it's driving me crazy. Is this the worst inner pain you can experience in life? :(
I've heard it's the death of a child that's the absolute worst. But definitely what you're experiencing is one of the worst feelings possible. Whether it's a loved one, child, pet, or ex, the grieving process is the same. The intensity determines how bad it is, which I think is why it's worst with a child since that's the purest love most people ever know.

Tough question. I am a football fan (got the game on now) and I enjoy football more, but I'm not sure it's better than soccer. The advantage I see in a soccer game is that at any moment the course of the game can change. That makes goals -- or shots on goal -- more exciting.

My Golden Retriever he is very friendly but sometimes gets agressive with my other 2 puppies over toys, he will be very posessive with them and if they come near him sometimes he will snarl at them and agressively chase them off. How can i stop this?
Take the toys away. Let him have a toy only when the other puppies are around and he's playing with them. You can do this by offering him less valuable toys that he won't be so eager to fight for.
Mainly though the important thing is to take the toys away as soon as possible so he doesn't learn that aggression is the way to go.

The family dog of nearly 4 years has been roaming the backyard with the family rabbits for the last 12 months. They were fine until recently when the dog killed 2 of the rabbits. Will it now become aggressive towards little kids?

They do, but they'd be better off if they didn't. That's the thing about free will -- the freedom to make your own moral choices doesn't mean they'll be the right ones. Is feminism responsible for the breakdown of the family, like a Vatican document has claimed?
No, not exactly. But there have been elements that have contributed to it. The feminist movement has cheapened human sexuality and cheapened relationships between men and women, which has led to, among other things, hasty marriages and a devaluation of marriage itself. Feminism is not the lone cause since no matter what it stands for, men still have a big role in those breakdowns too.

How do you work on jelousy with a dog? We have a two yr old golden, and just adopted a 1yr old black lab, and the golden, who is usually very good with other dogs, has become overly defensive of her toys/food/bones, ect and is snapping at the new dog.
First, the advice that Darth Continent is giving you can lead to you getting bitten by either one of the dogs. Grabbing them by the neck and rolling them over is a bad idea. Pulling fighting dogs apart by sticking your hands on the scruff of their neck is a bad idea. People often get away with this behavior with Goldens and Labs because they are such nice dogs, but that doesn't make it the...

How do you get a 2 y/o dog to stop digging holes under the fence to escape?
Ever get bored at work? Well, imagine how boring being in the backyard can be compared to touring the neighborhood.
A 30 minute walk is a good start, but you should also provide him doggy entertainment for the time that he is in the backyard. Otherwise he's left with little to dog and will want to venture out to find some fun.
I'd recommend picking up interactive toys and...

My king charles puppy is 5 months old and has started to lay on his side and kicks his back leg rapidly. He is a lovely natured dog and healthy, can any one tell me why he does this.
He probably just likes doing it. I've got a Malamute that does a similar thing except he uses all 4 legs.
Answer to:
Why are people saying McCain was formidable in the Public Forum? I though Obama was a lot more intelligent in his answers (attack with humility, evil has been done in the name of good, etc.)
He looked energetic, enthusiastic, and fun during the forum. The moderator didn't press him for specific answers or point out when he was off topic entirely (nor did he change his demeanor when Obama made great answers, except, of course, for the one that was positive about Rick Warren), so his series of stories were left as entertaining tales. Granted Warren could have pointed out that...

Answer to:
Do you believe Hillary when she speaks well of Obama and shows her support for him?
Not really. I think she's still upset that she lost the primaries and maybe stunned that she isn't involved at all. But I think her sense of support may be growing, particularly as we see the McCain campaign beginning to use her own attacks specifically against him (such as the "telling the truth" ad run this weekend) and begins to see that she may be remembered as the one...

Answer to:
Since Joe Biden flies the Catholic flag, then is he a hypocrite for not following the teachings of his professed religion regarding the protection of unborn children?
That greatly depends on what you feel are the reasons for abortion. One of the difficulties in the debate on abortion rights is the tendency to look at it beginning with a pregnant girl who is contemplating an abortion. At that time people who take an anti-abortion stance invoke many religious and moral arguments against the action. And these are very difficult to counter on moral grounds...

Answer to:
Does the behavior of a candidate's supporters have any influence in how one chooses to vote?
For me it could. For example, I am not a Mormon, but my brother is. Through him I have met many Mormons and found them to be polite and helpful. Because of that, I would be more likely to vote for Mitt Romney than any other Republican candidate since I have a sense of the community he comes from. I think friends of a person can tell you a lot about them.

If McCain got a call at 3am, would he need to ask his staff which phone to answer?
No way - McCain's old and old people get up early. My guess is he's sharpest from 3 a.m. to about 6:30 a.m. Kind of downhill from there.

Answer to:
Do we want a president who can't even remember how many homes he owns? (McCain = 7 it turns out)
No disrespect to the elderly, but it needs to be remembered that John McCain is not a young man. Aging wears on the body and the brain. His houses are one among many issues he has trouble recalling.
Do we want that in a President? I doubt it. High intellectual ability should be a prerequisite for such a complex job.

I wonder if the low voter turn out during the presidential election is a result of a favored candidate being eliminated during the primaries? It seems as though a large percentage of registered voters don't bother to vote during the actual election.
I think it relates to the primaries as well as the similarities among the candidates, Republican or Democrat. If it was a plurality system in which a Representative could be elected w/ 34% of the vote (or less) you'd get more diverse viewpoints and possibly more voter participation.
I think the low turnout is related to people's lack of belief in the government to work for their...

Ca you recommend a tried and true humane method for preventing a dog from barking when left alone at home?
She is 1 and a half....spayed...we adopted her 2 months ago.
What type of entertainment to you have set-up for her when you are gone? There are a variety of interactive toys available that can busy her working on extracting treats or her kibble rather than barking.

What are the odds Democrats will field a "dream team ticket" with Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton combining forces?

I agree with the others. I read in the Times that Obama may announce as soon as tomorrow morning while McCain is expected to wait until the 29th so he can gain news coverage right after the close of the Democrats' convention (which seems like a good idea to me, as far as strategy).

A spider comes down and lands next to you, what do you do? Smack it with a shoe, jump up and run OR pick it up with something and let it go outside?
Identify it - if possible to do so safely - and then kill it.
Answer to:
Have you ever seen a black widow spider up close and personal?
I have not. I have seen her nasty friend, the brown recluse, up close and personal. To me it was a chilling event the first time. He was already way dead (lots and lots of raid pumping through his body) but it's scary to see them and know how close they are. I found 4, maybe 5, in the last apartment I lived in. I moved out of that place fast!
Personally I am less afraid of the widow...
Answer to:
What's an easy way to get rid of a hectic spider problem? And why do I keep finding these little curled up things when I find a spider... what are those?
Bad news my friend - there is no easy way to get rid of spiders. Unlike other pests, even professional exterminating is of limited value. The best thing to do is to 1) seal off cracks to the outside, 2) identify what they are eating (other bugs) and go after them and 3) lay sticky traps to catch the spiders.
Caveat: be careful when fighting spiders. Depending on where you live, the spiders...

Did you watch the McCain/Obama interview by 'the reverend' tonight on CNN? What did you think?
I thought it was striking that although both men claimed to be Christians, Obama was the only one to make a specific reference to something in the Bible, rather than the Bible itself. And it was a telling and well selected one, the parable of the sheep and the goats.
Somehow, despite McCain's claims to be a follower of Jesus, I suspect he'd have a hard time laying out the...

Answer to:
Why is Senator Obama scared to go on Hannity and Colmes and debate with Sean Hannity? What does he have to hide?
It's not a debate. TV is not suited to carry political ideas, even when the moderator is attempting to be genuine. TV is rightly dubbed the boob tube or idiot box. But Fox finds a way to push even that envelope.
Bottom line is that anyone who doesn't share their views would be ill advised to attempt to represent them on Hannity and Colmes or the O'Reilly show. Those...

Who thinks that even though mcain would be an all right president he isnt the type of person we need right now in office
There might be a time when his world-view would be helpful, but now isn't that time. Our country works best when it synthesizes different beliefs, finding a comfortable ground for employer's rights v. employee's rights, tax needs and tax breaks, helping each other and helping ourselves, etc.
That balance is best served by different U.S. views being in the ascendancy. We still...
Answer to:
Has anyone heard if Hillary Clinton is getting paid and/or leveraged by either an insurance company or drug company to FORCE us to purchase health care? (This is America??? I was under the impression that I have rights...)
The thing to keep in mind is that whether people have insurance or not, they will continue to get sick and they will seek out medical care. One of the reasons for spiraling government health care costs - as well as the closure of numerous hospitals that provide care for the poor - is the issue of uninsured people showing up with medical needs and/or emergencies.
The hospital treats them but...

No. He's running as a populist so he can fairly be questioned about his interaction with the so called Average Joe. But it's a fair question to ask since we are in a position where we need a President that understands the lives...

With the price of gas over $4.00, do you still go to restaurants?
I do. I think the gas prices have brought the cost of making your own dinner closer to that of eating out. I usually eat alone, so for me it's the cost of one sandwich which isn't as costly relative to shopping as it used to be since the groceries are more expensive due to higher shipping costs. Restaurants don't seem to have raised prices at the same rate as grocery stores.

In Florida, may a woman living in a house, alone or with her daughter, refuse to rent a spare bedroom in the house to a man, and only offer the room to women, for safety? Is there a Florida law which covers this?
I doubt there's a law that specifically covers that issue, but I think she could easily pull it off. People make such distinctions all the time when sub-letting or taking in boarders. It would be covered by state and federal regulations, but given the historical background of anti-discrimination law, it seems unlikely that any court would enjoin her to accept a male boarder.

Spiders: pure evil....do you agree?
Sure do. And let's not forget the bugs they stalk. While we may think it's great that a spider kills flies, the flies probably don't agree.
However, sometimes spiders are wonderful. For example, the cellar spider is known to hunt and kill the black widow. When he does that he is a good spider because he has killed a dangerous spider. Same thing anytime a BRS is killed.

First assumption would be that it's a lone spider. Why? Because he's out in the open wondering around. I'd be more concerned about the ones you find in secret places. Not just because the terrible ones tend to hide, but also because it shows they've found a spot. Spider on the ceiling or wall could have wondered in and is looking for a spot. Will you develop a tolerance to alcohol as you drink it often? If at first it takes 2 cups for you to feel drunk and next time you'll need more than 2 cups to feel drunk hence tolerance?
It depends. A drug's effect also relies on set and setting. That means that your perceptions and comfort level can impact how it impacts you. Why is it bad to feed a dog chocolate?
Chocolate has a substance known as theobromine in it. Dogs cannot quickly process it and when it builds up (say from eating a lot of chocolate) it can cause a systematic response, ranging from diarrhea and vomiting to heart issues to death.
It's kind of like a person drinking too much hard alcohol too fast. The body can process it and break it down, but at a fixed pace. Too much and you...

Why are dogs fine eating feces but not when it comes to chocolate?
Chocolate has theobromine in it and dogs can't digest this well. Sort of like doggie lactose intolerance.
Poop, on the other hand, usually does not have toxic elements to it. If the poop has undigested food in it then a portion of what the dog is eating is that food. Naturally it can be dangerous if there's leftover medication or whatnot.
Basically they can digest the poop but...

How long do you think it's going to take for Lakers fans to start claiming that the Celtics ran up the score on Game 6 of the NBA Finals?
I would be embarrassed to make that claim if I was a fan. In addition to the near miss in game 2, there's the reality that you can't complain about running up the score at the professional level. I think it's ugly when Little League teams do that, and maybe high school, but once you hit college and beyond, it is what it is.

Have U.S. policies established after September 11, 2001 substantially reduced the risk of terrorist acts against the United States? (Curious as to what people think)
No, I don't buy that. Violence begets violence. Bush's policies (backed and supported by both parties) have shown the U.S. to be vicious. That intimidates rational people, but I don't think, from a psychological perspective, that insane-gonna-suicide-bomb-you-and-die-anyway
folks are scared of what happens next. Instead, I would offer that killing someone's mother, father,...
Answer to:
Do you believe, as McCain was quoted as saying today, that the ongoing invasion of Iraq is essential to US security?
Yes, I think it is. The problem with exporting your culture is that everyone ends up competing for the same resources. To keep the U.S. powerful economically and militarily, we need to control a large source of oil. The war isn't about democracy, Hussein, Al Qaeda, or terrorism. It's about seizing oil interests so we can control the international flow of the supply. Taking Iran's...

What position in Obama's administration should Hillary be given?
The "should" part is the difficulty. I think having her as the Vice President and Bill Clinton as the eminence grise would help the Democrats' goals to be achieved.
But she's kind of like a kid that her mom took to the store who picked out a toy she wanted and threw a big frickin' fit when her mom told her she couldn't have it. Even though her mom would have let...

I don't feel bad - I feel angry. I kill it with whatever spray can fits its kind.

Which network does better covering the NBA Playoffs? TNT or ESPN?
I think TNT because of their studio show with Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, and Kenny Smith. Good in-depth analysis of the games.
I like TNT's broadcasters a little bit more than the ESPN guys. But I don't like all the TNT pop-up ads for "The Closer" during the game. Leave us in peace!

How is it determined which team starts on which side of the court in the NBA?
I don't know, I can't remember. Phil Jackson indicated that back when the Bulls played the Pistons in the early 90's they used to choose to have their team play in front of their bench in the second half, thinking that would make it easier for their role players to score on the road.

No, not at all.

Lakers and easily in this match-up. It would possibly even be a sweep. The Lakers had been running like a car w/ bad spark plugs and a busted muffler until they picked up two ridiculous steals - Fisher and Gasol. They were very lucky, but now they are very good.

I like the DVD's that Seane Corn has made. From the negative feedback I've read, some people don't like her voice. Personally I do, but that's a caveat. Hopefully the Cavs. The last thing we need is another round of the Wizards playing rough 'em up Riley Knicks ball. Has any nba team won a playoff series down 3 to 1?
Phoenix did a couple of years ago against the Lakers. Tim Thomas hit clutch shots in games 1 and 6, Raja Bell clotheslined Kobe Bryant in game 5, Diaw went nuts in game 7 having the best game of his life. In the end, the Lakers blew the lead (though Phoenix was better).
Bryant gave it a valiant effort, posting 1 point in the second half of game 7.

One hopes not since those kind of prayers have a way of being forced to happen. The NBA, while entertaining, has serious legitimacy issues that are exceeded only by pro wrestling.

Which do you like better College BasketBall, or the NBA, Why?
Typically I prefer NCAA hoops. The NBA seems very political to me in the sense that different guys play under different rules. In college the officiating seems to me to usually be fair and even handed, so the winning team typically deserves it.
At playoff time, though, I sometimes end up liking the NBA system better because in college hoops the best team doesn't always win. It makes it...

Why is the answer always meditation?
I think it also relates to the "not always so" aspect of meditation because the answer to a difficult problem or question will not always be the standard one or the first thought. Meditation has a way of bringing in new ideas. I don't think it always has to be meditation, but freeing the mind up from a rut usually helps one find a brilliant new solution.

Is it true that meditation is dangerous in that emptying one's mind welcomes dark, evil spirits to take over or otherwise posess making the meditator weak and powerless?
I think it makes those thoughts less powerful. Instead of viewing them as the product of a deep terrible drive or desire, we who meditate dis them and call them "just thinking."

Might be bad form to answer this question (somehow no answers seems fitting in the Zen sense!) but I believe the clarity is not nothingness so much as it is singularity. Each thought being complete in the same way that you see as you hear, smell as you see and hear (so on and so forth...) creating a unified experience that is in alignment with your soul and the world.

Why is it so hard to meditate when you start?
And possibly because we get used to chasing our thoughts around. Makes you feel restless.

Why do the NCAA and NFHS have the five-second closely guarded violation and the NBA does not?
I don't have an official or correct answer, but I would speculate it's based on a longer shot clock at the college level (don't know HS rules). So at 35 or 45 seconds, the ball can kind of stay in one spot. NBA doesn't have that problem with 24 seconds (often down to 18 or less once you cross half-court). That's my guess.

If you get ball then body it is usually a foul. Any contact with the body is part of the blocking motion. People get away with it, particularly if they are well known or it was a difficult block.
Aggressive play, even...

Obama's experience has been questioned. I ask whether the vision in looking at a problem is more important than whether you have seen a similar problem before? The problems are not known in advance and whoever is elected will face them as new challenges.
To continue (AB does not allow enough characters in questions) - we know health care, Iraq, and the economy will be issues. But how will they play out? Not exactly as expected because life isn't like that.

Answer to:
Have you heard that if elected, Hillary would nominate bill to the Supreme Court?
According to Bill Clinton, he would not hold an official position. Some of them (not sure which) would be illegal for him to hold. He said he would be involved in goodwill missions when asked (which he would do for Bush if Bush wanted to send goodwill anywhere).
Now, would Bill be involved in selecting who gets appointed? Hard not to think he would be.

I don't think so. I don't think any of the Democrat candidates could even come close.

Do you think it is unpresidential for Hillary Clinton to act so emotionally on national TV? Do you think she has the nerve of steel and mental toughness to handle major national crisis?
First of all, I don't think we Americans can call anything unpresidential anymore. Look at the leaders we've followed and the morals they have shown. Bill did a nice job of denying all sexual contact with Monica Lewinsky - no tears, no emotion other than indignation.
And it wasn't true.
Bush lies to us every time he says anything to the media.
But no tears. No weakness from...

If you are voting for a lesser known candidate in a political race, is that wasting your vote?
I don't think so. Now if there was a candidate that you liked nearly as much and he/she lost by one, then yeah, you wasted your vote - unless it was your guy that won by one(:
Answer to:
At what time will we know the results of the New Hampshire primary?
I am guessing in roughly six hours. Exit polling (I think the polls close in a little over five hours) will probably give an indication, though if it's too close to extrapolate, then 7-8 hours may be needed.
Answer to:
Were Hillary Clinton's tears today a display of genuine concern for the American people?
I think they were a sign of frustration over what she feels is the lunacy of the situation. I can kind of relate. I recall feeling the same way at my last job when people with far fewer credentials got promotions that I deserved. I left the company for a much better spot elsewhere, but the sense of frustration is the same. The early polls likely gave her a sense that they were her votes, but...

I don't visit yahoo answers much. It depends on what I want to know. If it's relationship related, I check out girlsaskguys, but if it's a general question, I use AB. The downside here is that a) questions get swallowed up w/out answers and b) they link your response to an ad.

Why do you think my boyfriend who im with 5 out of seven nights with doesnt answer his phone when im not with him- should i be suspicious?
That's a lot of time spent together. I think he needs a breather. Very few guys want their girlfriend around every single night. Even married folk get tired of each other (probably one of the motivations for two story houses was to be able to get away from each other). Give him some space before he asks for it.

Probably to both. It seems like they've struggled more since playing the Eagles and encountering Jim Johnson's defensive scheme. But the Pats are great at hitting you where you least expect it and there's no reason to believe they don't have other offensive plans available.

Was Hillary Clinton's campaign co-chair wrong to resign for pointing out a truth about Obama for using drugs as a teenager? Or was it considered dirty politics and he should have resigned?
Seems extra stupid given Bill Clinton's past.
I think it's dirty politics and harmful to the Democrats. Regardless of who wins the nomination, the candidate has to be strong for them to win the White House. If the Clinton campaign succeeds in cutting Senator Obama down too far, then he won't be willing or able to help the party as a VP. Same thing for the Obama campaign in...

Does your school have a dress code (uniforms)? If not then you should question the teacher or have one of your parents speak with the teacher or administrative staff. While dressing up as well as you can is expected in the workforce, it is not okay for a teacher to grade you down based on that.

How was the wildlife population kept under control before humans invented hunting?
No offense, but I think you have a confused notion of "under control." Populations fluctuate based on the resources available and their ability to adapt to the environment. In times of plenty, a species will expand; in times of scarcity, the population will contract. It is a natural process. There is no such thing as "under control" - species continue to expand or...

I think it is because we know dogs and recognize that they are good beings when treated well. People who work with animals or who have researched heavily into the practice of sport hunting tend to find it as objectionable as dog fighting.

I think you have to run either a motion offense or a standard pro-set (1-2 guys post up, ball goes in, wing guys move around). Without having a lot of time to prepare, those two are the best way to go since it's more or less about running around.
Better go over the basics in practice - bounce passes, ball movement, triple threat position, box out, talk on defense.
