Answer to:
If your an atheist, why do you particpate in Christmas and accept gifts? Why do you do that?
The act of giving and getting gifts on a certain day of the year is entirely a secular function. I haven't for a long time. My kids knew Santa came after I got my tax return. Stupid people getting drunk at a Christmas party...not my idea of fun. Getting together with family several times a year. I can get behind that. Showing someone I care about, that I care about them with a thoughtful...

Answer to:
I once read a question regarding faith. The answers disturbed me so I was wondering; doesn't everyone have faith to begin with? Like ears or brains we have it but it is whether we choose to use it that makes us believe, don't you think?
In a fairly functional family, the children have faith they will be fed when they are hungry and will have to go to bed at bedtime. This faith blossoms out to have faith that the school will be there when they go, and on up to adults having faith that the gallon of gas they paid for was actually a gallon. Children of non-functional families may never know that faith.

What do white people say about blacks in the privacy of their homes?
Just curious...please be truthful.
Most "white"' people I know have too many other things to think about to have this come up as a topic of conversation. I put white in quotations because a lot of my friends have a multi-ethnic family background, but do not fit in any other category on government forms. Usually, if anything is said, it is because a news article makes a big deal of it. If you ask me, the media is one of the...

What do I do? My kid has been sent home with the dreaded head lice letter?
The letter should have instructions with it. If it doesn't, then ask your physician or pharmacist. Wash the child's hair with the recommended solution and get a nit comb if it doesn't come with the shampoo, and comb out all the eggs. Launder the bedding. If you can afford it, get new pillows. It happens to everyone with children in public schools until about teen-ager age. No biggie.

What if there is no God? What is this whole earth thing all about?
This 'whole earth thing' is about whatever you want it to be about. If you want it to be about a message from your God, then it is. If I want it to be about love and tolerance, then it is. If someone else wants it to be about babies and families, then it is. I don't understand why this is a question.
Answer to:
Do you think gay marriage should be legal? Why or why not?
The moment the government stepped in requiring a license, tying tax benefits and death benefits to the institution of marriage, it was no longer just a religious ceremony. It is a legal institution. All citizens of the US (and any country) should have the rights and responsibilities as any other citizen. Anything less is discrimination, which is against the law.

This mother and her family of four children had nothing for Christmas one year. my partner and i bought a tree and all the presents that year for them. in January, the gifts were taken back for money. we were shocked. why?
I have a LOT of years of gift giving experience behind me. I have learned that giving a gift has to be without reservation or strings. So if a family I gave to did something like this, I would not stop giving...except to this family. If they truly did not have money for Christmas, they may have needed the money for rent. I don't tell myself that because if they are scammers they may...

For the atheists, when was the last time you declined holiday pay(for religious holidays) and offered to come to work for straight time? Do you not purchase discounted items that are only on sale because of the holiday? How strong is your conviction?
The only religious holiday that can fall on a weekday is Christmas. Most places close that day...even Wal-Mart. Easter is on a Sunday. When I worked at Wal-Mart I got Sunday pay on that day. There wasn't much opportunity to volunteer. I suspect most places open on those days have a similar policy. Jesus is not the reason things go on sale at the holidays. If you are buying a...

Do you think its necessary to be an atheist to be able to research religions from a neutral perspective?
No - It may help because to be neutral, you have to set aside your preconceived notions. But some atheists could have some strong preconceived notions and some believers can be incredibly scholarly in their research, so it would depend totally on the person.

Atheists please give us your conversion story.
If you were raised in middle class American families, as it seems a lot of us answering were, you were raised in a Christian home, or neighborhood, or town. The rites and rituals of the services were comforting and familiar. So it may seem that we were converted somehow to atheism. But for me, it was a gradual self realization that I never did believe. I was just a comfortable conformist.

Are we a virus to the world?
Sometimes it seems so. Some viruses can stay in the host and be relatively benign unless something drastic happens. Others, unchecked, multiply wildly and can do severe damage and even destroy their environment (ie kill the organ or the host). Since viruses are not sentient, they do this without thought. Yep...sometimes it seem like that describes us.

I try not to let it provoke me, but if provoked, I as if they are proud of the work they are doing, then remind them that pride is a deadly sin and say 'see you in hell'. Or I simply say 'and your point is?" This really get them going. I know this doesn't answer your question. It is pure provocation and totally rude....

It would seem so. I only checked one country, India where it states: Hinduism accounts for 80% of the population of India.
The second largest religion is Islam, at about thirteen percent of the population.
About two percent of Indians adhere to Christianity. Zoroastrianism and Judaism.

Racism is the hate of a specific race. What is the term for the hate of a specific nation or population of people of many races?
I was going to say ethnocentrism, but that has less of a hatred of others than a belief in the superiority of your own culture. Ethnophobia is hatred on ones own culture. So I gotta go with Moongrim on this one and say Ethno Rascism. Is it weird or heartening that there doesn't seem to be a specific term for this?

Could you please try to explain to a non American, in simple terms, why Obama's health care package is a bad thing?
The idea behind this bill is not free health care but universal health care. Universal health care would require all citizens to carry insurance.

if I chose to get the commercial insurance my company offers it would cost me 2 times as much as the National Health option if I read the proposed bill correctly. Where were the ideas of the U.S. Constitution taken from, influenced by? What else can we learn from this society that gave us the backbone of America?
Are you referring to the theory that the Masons (and by inference, the illuminati) had influence over the items that are in our constitution. It is interesting, and who can say it did not have an influence, any more that the Church, or the freedom thinkers, or the very air of a new land. It is not where the ideas came from, but what we do with them that counts.

Twinings Earl Grey for special occasions, but plain black tea for everyday. I prefer loose leaf tea, but usually use tea bags as it gets harder to find the loose leaf type at my normal grocery stores. Herbal infusions are ok when I have a cold, like Lemon Zinger or Chamomile, but I usually just add lemon and honey to my black tea, maybe with a dash of brandy. ^-^

You are not wrong, but don't limit your choices. Love is where you find it. If you find it with a wealthy guy, ok. If you find it with a not wealthy guy, ok. Unless you live in a country where your parents still have to approve before you get married. If thy don't accept him it is their loss.

Why do some communities ban garage sales or allow people to have only one a year? That's interfering with free enterprise.
Banning garage sales may be part of the community charter the same as not being able to park a truck used for work in the driveway. Stupid if you as me but people agree to these rules to live there.
As for allowing only one a year, well, someone realized that some people use 'yard' or 'garage' sale as a way to have a small home retail business without paying sales tax....

Atheists don't look for a sign, maybe agnostics, but not atheists. Sign of what? People who believe in a personal god think atheists hate god or want god to show god's self. What 'believers' don't understand is that atheists do not believe in a god, so there is nothing to hate or look for a sign from.
The real question here is: Are you calling atheists evil...

What is your cleaning routine for your home? How do you keep it tidy everyday, if you do? What are some of the best cleaners you use if you have children? What type of music do you listen to while cleaning if you do?
1- Close the curtains and keep it dark.

If you went back in time and changed something, when you returned to the present wouldn't you just be in another parallel universe? Would you have disappeared from the original universe?
The time travel paradox has been an interesting subject for many a TV series, from the Twilight Zone to the Simpsons. I personally believe you wouldn't exist because there is already a 'you' in the parallel universe and there can't be two 'you's' in the same place.

A group that believes we are the ultimate and god made us, to find out that there are other civilizations out there would put a chink in that belief. Until the religions were able to convince themselves that aliens were gods children too.

Since I can't stand the taste of milk, when I have to drink it, it is with ice cubes. The coldness numbs the taste buds. Better yet is to crush the ice cubes in the blender and make a milk slushie. A spoon full of sugar (with ice) helps the medicine go down.

Have you ever wondered if there was one choice in your life that you had made differently if it would have completely changed your future?
This is the future speaking. I know the choices that bought me here. And I know different choices would have taken me to a different place.
The biggest one I have ever pondered, but not with any seriousness, is if I had joined the Air Force after high school instead of getting married. Life is good.

Can dogs see themselves in the mirror? I read that they can't.
Edit:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirror_test
The mirror test in wiki is a test of self awareness. Dogs see just fine. They are not aware that what they are seeing is a reflection of themselves. So technically they do not see "themself", even though they can see a reflection.

If a god from a different world attacked our God.. would Satan help our God?
Of course he would. According to the info I received in my younger years, Satan does what he does out of his love for God, to prove to God that humanity is not worth Gods time, not because he hates God.

Heterosexual parents: Would/do you allow your child(ren) to watch programs that make a favorable portrayal of homosexuality? Why or why not?
It depends on the show. We have watched plenty of good programs that portray a variety of people. We don't watch bad tv or movies. People are people. Entertainment is entertainment. My children are pretty smart and if I did avoid a particular show for something it portrayed, they would know it, and be curious, and not ask me about it.

Is this civilized society taking care of other societies or of individuals?
Historically, this has not worked out very well either way.
And who is to say who can not take care of themselves? We used to lock up schizophrenics, until they sued for the right to be free and won. They may not be able to take care of themselves the way 'civilized' do, but they are living the life...

Universal health care does not mean free health care. TANSTAAFL (there ain't no such thing as a free lunch...) I currently do not have insurance. What purpose is served by a "separation"? Do most "separations" ultimately lead to divorce? How is anyone supposed to work on problems if they are never together?
Sometimes absence makes the heart grow fonder, and the little irritating things seem to shrink with distance.
Sometimes this can be a cooling off time to remember why you got married in the first place. A counselor may suggest going out on dates to reconnect to that time.
Sometimes the separation may be the cowards way of easing into a divorce. (I was that coward)

Some dreams do. When there is something on your mind, your subconscious sometimes works on it in the background. We are most open to this when we are asleep and the distractions of the world are not getting in the way. When the sun explodes, where do we survive? Does it explode?
In several million years it will either explode or implode. Either way, earth will no longer exist when it does. But we will either have spread out into space by then or be extinct as a species. So the question of our survival by that point is moot.
We can only ensure our survival as a species by our actions today.

Unless you have a career picked out and there is a program in your school to match you up with a job that will lead to that career, my answer would be McDonald's. Don't judge until you have worked there. If you pay attention, all the principles of good business can be learned there. Plus the discipline of just getting stuff done.

Sean Connery - there was a dangerous air about him. You could believe he could make love to a woman the night before and kill her the next day. This 'danger' aura is extremely titillating. I had to be desperate to watch a Bond film after Connery. I just couldn't get into

Back in the 50s and 60s smoking cigarettes was fashionable. never advised on 2nd-hand smoke. wife and i smoked in house with our children present. today, we go outside to smoke. is this the norm today, for smokers to smoke outside their home?
Back then homes were better ventilated. Less central air conditioning and heating. We opened windows. All of us who grew up with it are becoming old enough to be of concern to the Social Security Administration. But these days of central a/c-heat, and hermetically sealed homes, we go outside to smoke. It has become the new way to meet our neighbors.

What are we going to do when at the last minnute we realise that the Earth's oil has run out and that there are no more spots to suck the Earths veins out, someone has got to think of a good idea here, will Earth recover in time and what will we do?
Four words - Mad Max: Road Warrior
While I would like to believe we will replace oil consumption in time to save ourselves, I seem to be cynical on this point. Either the politicians will behave as if this can't happen on their watch, or they will allow it to happen because it will somehow further their political agenda.
Earth will recover. We may not.

Let me guess. First time in 10 years your attention has to be elsewhere when he wants it? You are tired and cranky and need his support and he freaks out and wants to 'take time to think'. Well, if he can't be there when you need him, what good is he? I bet you were there for him every time he needed you. Kick him out and take is butt to court for child support.

Without your God what is your purpose?
My purpose is whatever I make of it. Years ago I learned the song "No Man Is An Island". I kind of took it to heart and made it my purpose. I help who I can. It is not my purpose to amass wealth but to dispense peace.
What is your purpose?

I didn't realize that was a woman thing also - I thought it was all men who did that. Just goes to show you. We know a few people who do something similar and project that out to the general population. That is one reason why I like answer bag. It makes me question assumptions that I didn't even realize I had.

How do you get back the urge to drink after alcohol poisoning? How long does it take?
It took me a long time before I had another drink. And I was never able to drink past a little tipsy after that. I never drank a lot before. I had just gotten a 'Dear John' letter from my husband and the father of my twin boys. It was New Years Eve. I angry partied. I think it was the following Christmas before I even had a glass of wine.

My husband prefers a soft toilet paper and I prefer a 'rougher more scratchy' one. I have asked around and many women prefer a more 'scratchy' toilet paper and most men admit to preferring a 'softie'. What do you prefer to wipe with?
The softer ones don't seem to absorb moisture as well, which is a quality more important to women than men. So I like the rougher ones.

Start with the smallest salt water aquarium available and get a gift certificate for the fish. After you set one up and get the balance correct, they are almost self maintaining.

My hair is frizzy and I want it strait does anyone have some tips?
My son's hair is frizzy. We have tried everything. The most effective is a hair straightening iron. Its like a curling iron, only flat. But for it to really work, we sit for an hour (he has shoulder length hair) and work through one small strand at a time. Living in Florida, this may last a whole day. But is looks good on him.

If one of your best friends secretly confided in you that he or she was a neo-nazi, what would you say or do?
I would ask them why. If I did not get a reasonable answer (and I don't believe there could be one) and I could not dissuade them from their misanthropic view, I would remove myself as far as I could from their lives. If I was still in school, I think I would tell a counselor. Since I am not in school any more, I would be observant. Being a neo-nazi is not against the law. It is just...

Too many people believe they have lived in a past life for there to not be something there. You would know through several venues. So many things can find their way in through the eaves and down between the studs in older homes. Some get stuck and get distressed. We had a squirrel in our walls once. What's the best way to dissuade a pesky 9 year-old kid from coming to your house and wanting to play with your children and bothering me almost everyday?
Not without being extremely rude. This is the time you teach your children tolerance. It may also be a time they learn about limits. No matter what your religion is, ask yourself if the person you will end up marrying should be pure. If you have sex outside of marriage you will be having sex with someone else's potential spouse. Think about it.

I always try to see the good in people. The world is too small and the population too big. We have to get along. It is so much easier to get along with someone if there is at least one thing about them you do not fear or loathe. But be careful. This way of thinking can become a habit, even addicting. Why is it that we're greedy? So many have less than we do, yet we seek more for ourselves? Why don't we get it?
It is our society. Most people seek acknowledgment of what they believe their own self worth is. In our society the ability to consume is often equated with self worth. At the grocery store checkout, why do they ask "Do you want your milk in a bag?"
Some people don't want a bag, so asking them is a courtesy.
Some people do. I like my milk in a bag because the condensation on the outside of the jug + any dirt in my car or trunk makes a mess of the jug, especially if I visited the lawn and garden shop first. I am pleased when they ask me rather than having to ask them to put my milk in a bag.

Answer to:
Is poetry pointless?
Some poems are silly. Some are epic. But all poetry make us think outside our normal box. The mind doesn't normally think in rhyme, or iambic pentameter, or haiku. They take us someplace different, a little vacation for the psyche. So no, poetry is not pointless.

How well do you tolerate people of diametrically opposed viewpoints?
I used to be my way or the highway - but with age comes wisdom (well maybe a little) and patience (ok not so much) Friends who have opposite views as mine fall into two categories. Ones who love a good argument and will search out facts or trivia to back up their views. The ones in the other group and I know when we have come to a wall and change the subject and never speak of it again....

Why does hair grow so fast on your head compared to the rest of your body, when it clearly doesnt for any other animal?
Evolution has taught our bodies that we don't need much hair on our bodies to keep our body temperature normal because we now wear a substitute in the form of clothes. (well most of us do) However, the hair on our head not only helps keep warmth in but it is often an important part of sexual attraction. Two beautiful heads of hair will likely produce a child with a beautiful head of hair.

Cute does feel like a put down sometimes. But most (not all) people mean it as a compliment. Unless you are willing to explain your feelings about the word, just say 'Thank You' and let it pass. With me it is a common variation of my first name. Once I feel someone is more friend than acquaintance, I will let them know how I feel. Others don't matter, so I just answer to it....

Do you think the word "dyke" is offensive? I asked a question with that word in there on this site the other day and apparently some people think I was being rude or something... I didnt mean anything bad by it!!! :(
to the best of my limited knowledge, dyke denotes a masculine lesbian demeanor much like queen denotes a feminine gay male demeanor. if either of these terms are used in context, it do not see that they would be offensive. However, any word is offensive if it is specifically used to hurt. (imho)

Do you think the question of whether gay marriage should be legalized in the U.S., is something that should be decided at a national level, or is it something that each state should decide for itself?
It would have to be on a national level. If a gay couple gets legally married in one state where they have all the same rights and privileges as any other couple, what happens to them if they have to move to another state? And how would they file their taxes? If the fed did not recognize the marriage, they would each have to file single at a higher rate. If they adopted a child in state A...

I am really requesting a 'one sided' discussion here: what WOULD BE the benefits of privitizing education? [Seems to me so much of it goes to the 'running of it' nothing is left over for the children and schools!]
you ask the most thought provoking questions. The first benefit of privatizing schools would be innovation. If public school wants to try something innovative, they have to get approval of so many levels of bureaucracy that it is hardly worth it. Charter schools and grant schools, while innovative, are still limited in their ability to try new things.
The second benefit would be the ability...

In your opinion why is prostitution illegal?Do you think it would serve a greater good to legalize tax and controll it,this way you could do like vegas does and require medical testing?
It would so do good to have it legalized. As it is, disease spread by prostitutes (male and female) is a threat to everyone. Legalization would slow that down, plus give a tax base from which we could draw monies for education and research to cure these diseases. Plus, it would free up the police and courts from the time spent pursuing and prosecuting these so called criminals.
