Blood is described as dark red (venous) or bright red (arterial). Sometimes veins tend to look blue because we are looking at them *through* our skin. As you get older, the virus may reappear as shingles. Unlike chickenpox, you can't catch shingles from someone who has it. The pain can be mild to severe. Blisters then form and last from one...

I had a fly fly up my nose. It was horrible. I tried to get rid of it, thought I had, and then it flew out of the same nostril. Is there any chance it has laid eggs in my nasal passage? I have had a funny taste in my mouth ever since - like broccoli !!
Wow, that's awful! I really doubt that it laid any eggs in your nose. Try gargling with warm salt water and use saline nasal spray. That should clean out your nasal passages, mouth, and throat. If you are still having problems you should go see your doctor. If needed he/she will refer you to an ENT.

I recently cut my big toe open with a glass picture frame . It is very deep. I got three stitches . Does anyone know if I would still need a tetanus shot? I haven't had one in many years and the frame that fell on me was quite clean.
The doctor or hospital where you received your stitches should have given you a tetanus shot. They are supposed to ask when you had one last. Tetanus bacteria may enter the body through a puncture wound or scratch. In the presence of dead tissue, tetanus spores reproduce and manufacture a poison (exotoxin) that travels through the body and causes tetanus symptoms. Though tetanus bacteria are...

How do you dislocate your knee?
A knee dislocation occurs when the bones that form your knee are out of place. The bones of your calf (the tibia and fibula) get moved compared to the bone of your thigh (femur). They usually happen only after major trauma,...

Slugs feed mostly at night, although they occasionally are active on overcast or rainy days. They are not nocturnal but they come out in the evening because it is usually wetter and cooler out. Slugs don't like the heat of the sun. It dries them up ... deadly for a slug. They also come out in the early morning when the dew has moistened the ground.

Not a good idea. You don't really get addicted to asthma inhalers but a true asthmatic may feel "dependent" on them. Frequent use of inhaled medication can lead to thrush, an infection of the mouth. Thrush can be uncomfortable and painful. If you have asthma and use an inhaler on a regular basis make sure to rinse your mouth well after each use. It can also cause irritation of...

What do brain cells lack that other cells have, that allow other cells to regenerate after dying?
Unlike most other cells, neurons cannot regrow after damage (except neurons from the hippocampus). Cell death in the CNS (central nervous system) is often intimately linked to a process of cell division. The cells can't divide therefore, they can't multiply. Fortunately, there are about 100 billion neurons in the brain. The majority of cells in the human brain are not nerve cells but...

Women are colder than men because their metabolism/muscle mass is usually lower, women's hearts beat more rapidly, and women have larger livers, stomachs, and appendices, but smaller lungs. Human brains have a thermostat center located in the hypothalamus, at the base of the brain where automatic body function and regulation take place....

I never tried Plum Duff, it sounds good.
My grandmother used to make a delicious German Plum Cake (Zwetschgenkuchen). I always looked so forward August when plums were in season. The smell of that cake cooking was mouth-watering. Man it was awesome! Kind of like a cross between a cake and a tart. I'll have to look for her recipe and make it again. Thanks for the memory Highlander!

No, that is a terrible, mean-spirited thing to tell a child. It is difficult enough for girls today to fit in. Why is it that some people are allergic to peanuts and others are not?
Peanut allergy is caused by an immune system malfunction. Your immune system identifies peanuts as harmful triggering the production of immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to neutralize the peanut protein (allergen). The next time you come in contact with peanuts, these IgE antibodies recognize it and signal your immune system to release histamine and other chemicals into your bloodstream.

the heart is "strongest" is because it does more work over one's lifetime than any other muscle, and it's almost impossible to fatigue. How can I get rid of boils and stop them re-apearing?
Apply warm compresses, and soak the boil in warm water. This will decrease the pain and help draw the pus to the surface. Once the boil comes to a head, it will burst with repeated soakings. This usually occurs within five to seven days of its appearance. You can make a warm compress by soaking a wash cloth in warm water and squeezing out the excess moisture.
When the boil starts draining,...

When you get Mononucleosis, can you start off with only a few symptoms? I have abdominal pain, as if I were hungry, but I eat and it still hurts this way, and I can't throw up either. So would you say this is mono? (and yes I was making out with my g/f)
The first symptoms of mononucleosis typically include fever, headaches, muscle aches and unusual fatigue, such as the need for 12 to 16 hours of sleep daily. These symptoms are followed very shortly by sore throat, swollen glands, muscle aches, loss of appetite, and sometimes a rash.
In kids between the ages of 4 and 15, the mono may cause a mild illness that resembles a common respiratory...

Can you catch aids from a bug bites? Mesquito or spiders or other insects that go from person to person biting them?
No, you can't get AIDS from a mosquito, spider or other insects. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), mosquitoes, etc. do not inject blood when they bite. As a result, they do not transmit the virus. What they do inject is an itch-inducing saliva that acts as a lubricant to aid blood extraction, but it does not carry the virus.

Why do burnt smells linger longer than most others?
Interesting question. I suppose because it is such a strong "heavy" smell. Things that are burnt usually cause thicker smoke as opposed to normal vapors that come from other sources. If I cook with garlic or other strong spice/food, etc. I smell it alright, but it is much easier to remove the smell and it doesn't linger as long as if something burnt. Burnt smells are much stronger.

Can cysts turn to cancer?
It really depends on where the cyst is and what kind it is, but they don't usually become cancerous. Everyone forms cysts. They can be very normal. If what you had was not normal, your MD would have you come back in for a repeat ultrasound and tests after a certain period of time. They can see if the cyst looks suspicious...if it is solid, contains anything, etc, they may investigate it...

Bones are most definitely alive. If you've ever seen a real skeleton or fossil in a museum, you might think that all bones are dead. There really are no health risks for "brain freeze".
When something cold touches the roof of your mouth, it triggers a cold headache. The cause is a dilation of blood vessels in the head. The dilation may be caused by a nerve center located above the roof of your mouth -- when this nerve center gets cold, it seems to over-react and tries to heat your brain causing the dreaded...

Doctors lost an elderly man's false teeth during surgery but found them four days later - stuck down his throat, a report said. However, the commission found that doctors had taken all due care during the surgery. What is your reaction to this?
That sounds a little absurd if you ask me. Any qualified anesthesiologist would ask the patient before surgery if the had loose, chipped, or false teeth. If so the damaged teeth are noted and false teeth must be removed prior to surgery. If this was not done than the physician in question should be held liable for malpractice.

Yeah you can. Just cook it slowly so it defrosts and the center cooks enough. However I don't recommend cooking steak before thawing. It tastes much better if you defrost it first but in a pinch if you forget to take something out of the freezer for dinner you can do it. You can probably defrost it a little in the microwave on low power too.

Cats use their tails to express feelings. When they are mad they may flip their tail violently. If they are happy they may just swish it lightly back and forth. Mine is always moving his tail around. Sometimes when he is outside he moves it to keep the occasional pesty bug away. Cats also use their tails for balance.
