Are the senses of the preying mantis advanced? Can it hear or feel human speech, for instance? The senses would be reasonably advanced for an insect, but if you compared it against a mammal they would seem poor. It's a matter of perspective. I'm not sure whether praying mantis's hear. It might be sensitive enough to feel sound waves from your mouth if you spoke loudly quite close to it, though.

How do praying mantises move? Do they walk on 4 or on 6 feet? Or do they usually just jump? They have 6 legs. They move with a sort of odd swaying motion - they're trying to look like a leaf to hide from predators. Of course, a lot of the time they prefer to sit and wait.

With Monopoly, I'd have a 'Countries of the World' version. Admittedly, some countries might get a bit upset about their placing and many would argue over who should be Mayfair. ;)

I heard that some humans have reptilian DNA. Is this true? If so, how? Well, 50% of DNA is also found in bananas, so it wouldn't surprise me if we had some reptilian DNA.

Chameleons change colour based on moods and temperature. Chamoflague has very little (some would say nothing) to do with it. So a chameleon would probably turn black (which I believe is the colour they turn to symbolise stress).

I have aball python that is about a year old. One of his eyes is floggy, like a film over it. I'm positive that its not a eye cap. He just developed it after I moved him into a new enclosure. His other eye is damaged from a bad shed. Any ideas? Remedies? Normally the eye goes milky when they are about to shed. It should clear after the snake has shed. If the skin remains stuck over the eye, go to the vet, who can normally offer something to help.

Today, when lifting the lid of my trash can, the inside and lid was crawling with maggot worms. In all my life I never saw something so disgusting and we keep the lid closed. Did something die in my trash can? Not necasserily. Maggots are just fly larva, hatched from fly egg which can be layed in almost anything the fly sees as food, not just corpes. Actually, if somethng died in the can, flys wouldn't have got to it, what with it being sealed off. So the one word answer to your question is: no.

I would like to say Thank you to everyone who has been their for me. I am back :) I have my Little outbursts and i Apologize. How have you all been doing? YAY! It's great to have you back, Jenna. While you've been away you've been in AB top 5 of the Week, so it's clear lots of people missed you. You also missed the 'great avartar deletion' moment, when loads of avartars mysteriously dissapeared and where replaced with a blurry blue bag. But appart from that, all has been quiet.

We all 'have a novel in us'. What is yours about? Well, I'm actually writing a 'novel' at the minute - it's about all this school children trapped in school by a horde of fantasy monsters. Eugh, it sounds rubbish when you put it like that, but I have some hopes for it. If you're talking about metaphorical novels mine would be about the main characters inability to accept normality.

How long will fossil records of humans last from being buried in a coffin? Unfortunately, it's odds on that you won't fossilise. Fossilisation needs specific criteria to be met before it can happen - note the lack of some prehistoric fossils in comparison (sp?) to others. I believe there is a question about this in 'Does anything eat wasps?' a book that is well worth reading.

Why all this disinfection? Why not just clean? Don't we need exposure to stuff in order to build immunity? It's a home, not an operating theatre! Very true. All this disinfection is unnecassery and does weaken the immune system by not giving it practise against 'little germs'. When people inevitably get 'big bad germs' (this can't be avoided, btw) the immune system can't cope.

Assuming dinosaurs existed, were wiped out by an asteroid crashing in to the earth, how long would it have taken from initial impact to the last one dying? Oh, good question. I'd take a guess at around a 100 years, as all the ecosystems collapsed. The other side of the world to the impact certainly wouldn't feel the aftermath imediately- all the dust thrown up would take a while to clog the atmosphere. Just my thoughts.

I'm not entirely sure who found the first, but I believe feathered dinosaurs are suprisingly common in China - with the feathers pointing to the start of evolution into bird-like creatures.

If you could make one rule that had to be followed by all AB participants in regards to either/both Q&A, what would it be? Thou shalt not attack other users for petty reasons. Come to think of it, thou shalt not attack other users for any reason at all. Don't stoop to their level.

I think it's a combination of the speed (alarming - ahouse spider managed an incredible 3 metres per second), number of legs, body hair and genetics - it's scientifically proven fear of spiders is passed down in genes and is normally reinforced when a child sees a parent freak out over a spider.

How intelligent are spiders? They're suprisingly intelligent for creatures with brains the size of a grain of salt. There brain has to control the movement of the spider, use the spinnarets (spelling?) accuratly and judge wether it should run away or try and subdue an incoming predator.

Which novel should just be left as it is, and not into a movie? The Demonata series. The books are for young teens and up, but with the amount of blood and guts in there the film would have to be a 15/18 (I'm not sure what the American equivalent is of that.) As Darren Shan himself said, you can get away with more in books than you can in films.

RFC1855 (Netiquette Guidelines) tells us to use mixed case. Most books, magazines and webpages write that way. But some people never use majuscules. Who started this, is this a growing tendency and what are your thoughts about it? I don't know wether single case a growing tendancy, but I much prefer mixed case. My Mali Uromastyx has parasites. i took her to the vet and the vet gave me medicine to give to my lizard, but she still seems sick and isnt very active anymore and doesnt seem to have much an appetite too. i think she is also constipated. what can i do? From what we currently know, which dinosaur was the most intelligent? I'm going to have to go with velociraptor. There intelligence increased as they learned to hunt co-operatively and became smart enough to out-fox prey dinosaurs. P.S They weren't however, as smart as they are depicted in Jurassic Park...it would be almost impossible for any modern day reptile, with 65 million years more evolution under it's belt, to work out how to open a door.

Do we know what colour dinosaurs were? How? Unfortunately, we don't know what colour the dinosaurs were. Very little fossilised skin has been found, and when it was it was all washed out and faded. We can only assume they were coloured like modern day animals, for camouflage and other causes.

I just saw an interesting program on Discovery HD where paleontologist Jack Horner hypothesizes that T-Rex was a slow moving scavenger since it has useless arms and because it's thigh bone is longer than it's shin bone. What so you think of this? Yes, T-Rex doesn't have the makings of a great predator, but bear in mind the prey of the time. It would most likely have fed on duck-billed dinosaurs, and these were not a lot faster, if at all, than T-Rex. So my conclusion is that it took live prey (of the duck-billed variety) AND scavenged.

How many times can a wasp sting? Lots, but as Takei-Shihan explained, venom will only come through 4 or 5 times per minute, as it has a limited supply. Wasps are very hard to goad into stinging, however, as stinging weakens the individual, and if all the individuals went round stinging everything in sight you would end up with a very weak wasp colony.

Personally (and I have actually got this) I'd have a Charizard (Level 100, obviously) knowing Fly (it's a under-rated move), Flamethrower (to destroy cannon-foder), Fire Blast (useful during a pretty equal battle) and Overheat (for emergencies!).

I have a Gyarados on Pokemon Diamond. Should I teach it Blizzard or Ice Beam? Blizzard is more powerful (120) but really inaccurate (70% accuracy) ... Ice Beam has a power of 95 and a 100% accuracy. Also, which electric pokemon: Raichu or Ampharos? I would teach your Gyrados Ice Beam (Using the method Black Knight and Mars Jenka have just taught me). Why Americans wear same looking slippers now befuddles me. Crocodiles are beautiful, but in a different way. Has this happened in your life? We have a similar problem, but in our case the invasive species goes by the name of Tesco, not Walmart. Tesco plans to invade the sleepy village of Barwell and stick a store right in the middle of it, at the expense of local shops (Co-op, greengrocers, etc). It will also increase trafic as every gullible person within a 5km radius comes to have a look.

Why is it that the older as we get the faster time seems to fly? Do we lose our perception of the passage of time? I think it happens like this: To a 1 year old, a month must seem a long time, because they've only experienced 12 of them. Compare this to a 40 year old, who would have seen 480 months (is my maths correct?). To a 40 year old time seems to go quicker because they have experienced so much of it. Disclaimer: This is only my personal theory. I am not presenting it as solid fact.

The Golden Poison Dart Frog is considered one of the most posionous creatures in the world (one wild adult has enough poison to kill up to 100 adult humans, or 20,000 mice). Why does this frog lose its 'posionous capabilities' in captivity? As far as I know they are only poisonous in the wild due to a diet of poisonous ants. Somehow they then take the poison and transfer it to their skin. Of course, in captivity they never meet the ants, so they aren't poisonous.

The concept of the universe expanding is often misunderstood. The universe is not expanding "into" space. It is space itself that is expanding. I saw a program the other day about Mountain Gorillas, the male of the species is an incredibly powerfull animal, do you think there are any other species that could compete with it with regards to power to weight? I'm not sure what could compete with it in a power to weight ratio, but I once saw a program where they hypothesised about a fight between a mountain gorilla and a leopard. The mountain gorilla won by hitting the leopard across the back with an incredably powerful blow. (Bear in mind however, this is only a hypothesis).

If you woke up and there was a snake right next to you, What would you do? I would start making soft, reassuring noises, even though the snake probably couldnt hear them, then I would remind myself not to make any sudden movements. Next I would try to work out what species of snake it was. If it was non-venomous, i would pick it up and find a spare container for it until I called an animal welfare group. (If they couldnt release it back into the wild, i might offer it...
