Why is it that we don't have a hetrosexual relationship section here for our questions? And why don't we have our own parades? Thoughts?
The same reason why we can't have a WET network. White Entertainment TV. Same reason we can't have White Power as the Latinos and Mexicans have Brown Power. Same reason men can't have a movement of Men's Rights. All these things segregate us from the ones we originally segregated. Isn't it ironic that when the white man displays being proud about his own race, sexual...

If I'm making one box of cake mix and I put it in only one 8 inch pan rather than two, what time and temperature do I use?
First you have to know the density and composition of the cake mix. Multiply that by the weight of the contents. Convert that result into a water/CO2 ratio divided by your bra size. That will give you the pan size you should use. Next, calculate last years average temperature of your kitchen during the summer solstice multiply your IQ and divide by your oven size in cubic cm. This will give...

Is there any "cheat" methods to memorising jazz scales like the circle of fifths for major and minor scales
The only cheating I can think of is to get someone else to record it, then put your name in the credits. I really don't think you can cheat playing. Either you can or you can't. There is also a difference of being able to play something, then getting it to performance level. I've practiced something for days and weeks, thought I had it, then tried to play it live in a...

Is AC/DC and nirvana overrated
AC/DC has passed the test of time. People in their teens, 20's 30's 40's and 50's can sing along with an AC/DC tune. They may be simple but you can't deny their place in rock. NOT overrated.
Nirvana has yet to pass the test of time. Their fan base is dying off as they get older and Kurt Cobains' death tacked on a decades' worth of worshipers. Overrated....

Answer to:
On my guitar I play an open A, then an open E, which sound good, but then I play power chord B with power chord F, but power chord B sounds better with power chord F#, why is this?
That's because F# is the fifth step of the key B. F# naturally wants to resolve to B. Same as E to A. F wants to naturally resolve to Bb. That's probably why it sounds better to you.

Is there any secret tips you can give me to work out the notes in any scale i work out how to do it for major scales?
Do you mean how to play them? Practice. If its about figuring them out...if you already know the Major scale, then all the other ones are based on that starting on different degrees.
For instance, the minor scale (Aeolian) is a Major scale starting on the 6th degree.
D Major
D E F# G A B C# D
B Minor
B C# D E F# G A B

You can't make money from someone elses copyrighted material. For instance, if you put the Nike swoosh on a bunch of T-shirts and tried to sell the T-shirts, Nike would procure all your profits. Why are there 12 notes in a musical scale?
One thing you want to consider as well is that there are 12 notes in western music. There are theories of music that involve quarter tones which changes alot of rules of music theory as we know it. The 12 note chromatic scale is just one part of sound and frequency. IF you really want to dig into it, frequency is the key. The frequency of sound is labled with letters.. A B C D E F & G....

Why is the other choice a wild cacophony of random sound? Looking only at the sheet music, how can you tell the difference between E major and C Sharp minor? They both have 4 sharps on the same notes.
They are technically the same Key signature. C# is the Aeolian scale of E major. Its just a very common mode. I would tend to agree with Aristocles...If the music doesn't have a tag or pick up at the beginning...its usually the first chord in the chart.

Why is porn degrading to women?
I don't think it is. In the industry the women choose who they are going to do a scene with. In blockbuster teen movies parents are always portrayed as naive imbeciles who don't have a clue and some 13yr old saves the world. That's pretty degrading to adults and yet is considered family viewing. Its all perspective.

Is there a music timing/tempo/other that is in sync with the speed of gravity?
For the purpose of education I would like to point out a few flaws in your question. First gravity is a force which is in units of Newtons or kg/m/s^2. Second speed is a velocity with no directional indication which could be in m/s or any other form of unit length/unit time. Third if you are talking about tempo, this is a type of frequency. This means it would be measured in beats/minute....

What is the function of the resonant drumhead on a mounted/floor tom tom? I'm using two mounted and one floor without the bottom head. Would I get MORE sound by using a bottom head????
Joe Man
It gives the drum more tone. The batter head gives you pitch...the resonant head is about tone and resonance. Back in the 70s that's all they used were single head toms. That's why the toms always sounded muted.

Answer to:
How do you set up a pulse drumset the brackets on the tom toms
Is that the kind with one L-bracket for each tom? If it is...you want the hinge on the bracket to be less than 90 degrees and turned toward where you will be sitting. Place the long part into the bass drum only a couple inches. (dont stuff the whole rod in) Put the drum on the short end and adjust to a basic setting. Repeat with the next tom. Then adjust both to your liking. Good luck!!
Answer to:
Help with time signature, is 61/2(six and a half) over 4 possible?
No. You wouldn't write it like that. It would be written as 13/8.
If you had 6 quarter notes that would equal 12 eights. Adding another half a beat would be 13 eights. Since you can't write in the time signature 6.5/4 or 61/2/4 change the denominator to show eights as one beat. 13/8

Heres another thought.
Reading music is like reading a book. The challenge is doing something physical at the same time. The better you are at reading the more proficient you will be with the instrument you are playin. What are the tops of drums made of?
Hand drums are usually fitted with animal hyde or synthetic animal hyde. The drums that are hit with sticks are made of mylar. Some of them are coated with a white synthetic spray that give the drum a different sound and you see them on snare drums alot. Some heads, and you mostly see them on marching snares, are made from kevlar.

What exactly is "Music Theory?"
Music theory is the field of study that deals with the mechanics of music and how music works. It involves identifying patterns that govern composers' techniques. In a more general sense, music theory also often distills and analyzes the elements of music – rhythm, harmony (harmonic function), melody, structure, form, and texture. Broadly, theory may include any statement, belief, or...

I'm a professional drummer who's never been "on the road". how can a first timer like me find a gig with a tour band?
All the really good gigs are word of mouth. If you're a professional player, you already know a bunch of musicians. Tell them you are wanting to tour. Mr.JDM is right...auditioning is crucial to getting out there. Vegas, Nashiville, Chicago, New York, Atlanta, are a few other places you'll want to check into. Good luck!!!

Are you directing or wanting to know what to write on the sheet music? I don't know what tempo you want on the slow part but maybe andante or adagio. At the point of returning back to the original tempo you want "A Tempo" or "Tempo I (primo)". Here is the site I got the info from.

Music chord sequence in minor key: I get I ii iii IV etc in major key; but what are the chords when you start on i? If i is am or em, for instance, what are IIIb Vb vib Viib and in the minor can't the IV be either iv or IV?
Major- I ii iii IV V vi vii.
Minor- Starts on the vi of a major scale
vi-vii-I-ii-iii-IV-V.
Or if you want to start it with the root of the minor it would be this
i-ii-III-iv-v-VI-VII
It would be modal. Aeolian
If your key signature is in D...(F#). You can still play in B minor.
Check out this site. Itll help with your modes. Good luck...

Answer to:
What do two dots on top of a half note mean? Are they played like 4 eighth notes?
If you had two dots to the right of the half note it would mean lengthening the value of the note. One dot means by half...another dote by 1/4. Two dots = 3/4. For the half note add 3/4 of it value.
In 4/4
Half note = 2 quarter notes
1st dot = 1quarter note
2nd dot = 1 8th note
Total= 3 1/2 beats.

You have to play a chord that fits the melody. Palavalves charts are cool cause it shows where chords would naturally want to go...what the human ear/brain likes to hear. V wants to resolve to I. What you are hearing and seeing are not the same. I've always hit the drums while filming, but thats not recorded on the audio. Respectable to who? If you wanna play in a classic rock band on the weekends...learn a few AC/DC songs and have fun. Who determined that those are the standard frequencies of notes? Couldn't someone make up notes with different values that, as long as they are proper multiples, would sound as musical as the "normal" notes?
its just a standard that musicians follow in order to be in tune with other musicians. Its like the color chart. Someone said...ok we'll call this green...and so on. 440 will always be 440, but not necessarily always A. The following frequecies after you decide on the starting point will follow the standard western diatonic priciples...for modern theory that is...

Did you notice music is getting more electronic sounds and less bass guitar or drums?
yes...top 40 is the biggest culprit. Its seems though the heavier the band the less 'electronic' it is. However, even the heavy bands are triggering the drums. That was something my band was doing in the early 90s when recording. We'd trigger the kick drum to get a beefier sound, now they are all doing it.

In music notation, what does a sharp sign next to the clef mean? for example on the top line (f) of the stave.
Its in the key of G. All F's are F#. The next would be F# and C# being in the key of D. If when you systematically start adding the sharps the keys will follow the circle of fifths.
G=one#
D= two #
A= three #
E= four # and so on....

What does the bottom number in a timing bar mean, e.g. 6/8 top number = 6 crotchets in a bar, whats the bottom number mean.
Bottom number works like this:
2=Half notes
4=Quarter notes
8= 8th notes
16= 16th notes.
So when you have 6/8 time it means 6 beats per measure and the 8th note gets one beat.
4/4 four beats quarter gets one
9/16 nine beats 16th gets one.
The bottom number can only and ever be powers of two
2 4 8 16 32 64.....
top can be any whole number.

Do drummers in rock bands get as much exercise as elite athletes?
no...not like an elite athlete. Athletes actually eat properly, probably don't have damaging vices like a rock drummer, and most likely keep better hours. The cardio a rock drummer may get on tour can equal an athletes work out, but the fatigue from restless sleep is a strain on the mind. The adrenaline rush is probably the same though. What effect does a crack in the body of a drum (tom) have on the sound quality?
bad effect...depends if its all the way through...interior to exterior, top to bottom. You just have to think about this...the sound quality of your drum will diminish slightly with every hole crack and piece of hardware thats on it. That's why low mass lugs, rim mounts, and single screw lugs are what a lot of drum companys are doing.

Those are all great kits. Anything maple is going to sound great. If you go with the Tama just make sure its the maple kit, I forget which line it is right now. DW is the leader (in my opinion) for top o the line kits. the sizes of your kick drum and snare is what you want to consider for the style of music you are playing. What is a tenth from B flat on a keyboard and how can I compute other tenths?
Katysax is right about the Bb to D an octave higher. To compute other tenths, take the third of any chord and play it an octave higher. D is the maj. 3rd of Bb. You won't see add 10th very much, because all you are doing is defining the chord with the 3rd 5ths and 7ths, no matter where they fall on the keyboard or fret board.

New music vs. old school? who wins?
I think old school will always win...because an old school song is one that has passed the test of time. You won't hear any crappy songs from 50yrs ago anymore, only the good ones. So, when an old school song is played everyone knows it, and most everyone loves it. New music (if you are meaning top 10 or chart busters) some of its really good. But a really good song will pass the test...

Do you, or does anyone you know, have "perfect pitch"?
Perfect Pitch is not about being able to hit a specific note when a chord is played. Perfect Pitch is being able to hear a note and know what that note is without any reference. Some one plays an A on the piano, you know its an A without looking. Just being able to hear that an instrument is not tuned properly doesn't mean you have perfect pitch, just means your not tone deaf.

Why is a drum round and not square?
Think of a high quality recording studio. No square corners or parallel walls, this is because of noise cancelation. If a drum were square, it would cancel itself out and all you would get is the resonation of the head, (maybe) which then defeats the purpose of having any high quality wood in your drum. Furthermore just the manufacturing would be a nightmare. Your heads would always break at...

Combination of both. If I play a trumpet, it will sound like a trumpet. But when Dizzy plays a trumpet it sounds like a musical instrument. A great musician can make a crappy instrument sound great. At what websites can you listen to any song with a metronome going?
Not any that I know of. If the song has a real drummer the tempo won't stay the same through the entire song, so the metronome won't help. If its recorded to a click track, you might find some consistency, but sometimes they'll do for example 85 1/2 bpms which makes things more complicated. Why would you want that anyway?

When it comes to writing songs, you just need to be able to hear the pitch and sing it. It doesn't matter the quality of the tone coming from you, but more the accuracy. If you can't carry a tune that probably means you can't hear differences in pitch, therfore, probably wouldn't write a good tune, BUT it can be learned. There is hope....

There aren't diminished or augmented notes, they are chords. This is how they work. Take a major triad say C E G ...Flat the third and the fifth you have diminished. C Eb Gb. Agumented you sharp the fifth. C E G#. In a major scale the 7th step, lets say B in the key of C is a diminished chord. There isn't a natural Augemented chord in the major scale. That's a weird one because you have an A and an A# or a B and a Bb creating some serious dissonence. I think it would be an A(sus2)addb9/E But that's breaking some rules in chord building, so Im not sure.

I guess I have found, and I knew, in harsh black and white, that some people really get off on the pain of others I guess, all i can do is feel sorry for them, but it still hurts, like a guy on the building andcertain people say "JUMP", do they have souls?
Yes they have souls that feed from others' pain. You however don't have to feed them. Your best weapon is not to feed them with your emotion. If you are hungry and cant get food at the bank, will you go to the bank for food? NO...so here is my advice.
Everything anyone ever says to you is rarely ever really about you. Take nothing personally. If someone doesn't like what...

Answer to:
In a chord, what is the difference between adding a note and suspending a note? Would the guitar chord 022102 be Emaj(add9) or would it be Emaj(sus9)?
I don't know about the 022102 thing, but 9ths are add nines when on top. Adding the F# down low would be sus2. To clarify....Emaj(sus9) is actually Emaj(sus2) playing the F# in place of the 3rd. Add9 would be playing the F# an octave higher keeping the third in its place.

If you were in a deeply committed relationship with someone who did not ever want to have children and you did...could you continue on in that loving relationship or would you have to leave? At what point do you leave?
Relationships are really about agreements. Each person states how they want to live their lives and the other says, "yeah, I can be apart of that", or "No i can't be". They make an agreement. When one of them decides to change the agreement, then some negotiations need to happen. I know Im making a relationship sound like a business partnership, but it is a...

Start with a theme...something you can return to periodically in the solo. Dynamics Dynamics Dynamics. If you don't use Dynamics your solo will sound mundane and uninteresting. Crowd pleaser is repetition. Even the simplest rhythm repeated over and over starting at pp and ending in fff can get them going. End with your flashiest, loudest, cymbal crashing lick. Your gonna be sorely disappointed if you try and do that. Why...

2) There are needs that everyone has that a spouse can't possibly meet.
3) If you have children, you must meet their needs first.

haha...good one. Honestly though, I believe God gives us chances everyday, every hour, minute and second. Its our job to be aware or 'accept' those chances. My sister got a package sent to her saying her husband was cheating on her. It was set up like a "friend" wanted to inform her without saying the name...In actuality it was an advertisement to catch a spouse cheating. How cruel is that to do to someone?
Appaling...this contributes to the downfall of western civilization. The dumbing down if you will. Place fear in the hearts of the innocent...that is a tactic the governments, media, and now advertising uses. Its our choice....DONT GET CAUGHT IN IT!!! Allegra...playing those drums for about 10yrs. Playing drums for 24yrs.
Answer to:
Im thinking of purchasing a sonor double base drum kit; it looks really good but would you recommend sonor?
Dont buy a kit because it looks good. Don't buy a kit cause some pro uses it and it sounded great. They have thousands of dollars to spend on effects and production. Go to your local store, play them. Ask questions and do research. Know what YOU want. A rock drummer is not going to buy a four piece kit with an 18" bass drum. Just like a jazz drummer won't buy a double kick...
Answer to:
Does anyone know how to do the heel toe technique for drumming? i'm having a lot of trouble getting the hang of it. does it have a lot to do with the spring tension of the pedal?
Start with your foot flat on the pedal. Lift the heel so the toe pushes the pedal and you strike the head...hold your foot there with heel up and let the beater fall away from the head. Then drop the heel allowing the entire foot to push the pedal down striking the head again. Its a rocking motion, and if you have a decent pedal anyone can do it. If its taking you along time to get results...

If you ask if someone's comfortable with something, and they say "yes" repeatedly, even though they don't necessarily look comfortable with it, should you just let it go and accept it, or feel guilty if you kept doing it even though they said it was ok?

You'll first want to creat some kind of script, something to prove that it is your idea, so they can in turn 'buy' it from you legally. I'm ticked off by the behaviour of certain people at the moment. Do I have a bad attitude because I'm feeling this way right now? Am I being hypocritical? Please tell me.
Your being hypocritical if your behaviour reflects the same behaviour of the people that are pissing you off. Either way, if you are ticked off, you probably have a bad attitude...nothing wrong with it though. Just remember people don't tend to make very good desicions when they're pissed off. Be pissed off if you want, just don't make any desicions or talk about it until...

Are you judgmental? If so, why?
I still have yet to figure out what judgemental is and if it really is a bad thing. If someone comes up to me on the street and says "i gotta a real rolex to sell ya," I make a judgement right there. I judge the person by how they look, where we are, how they speak, and if what they say might be true or not. That's just survival. So what is judgement, and is it really that bad?

Why would you need your own gun? ... Only if you are a farmer, law enforcement officer, in the army/navy/aire force or professional bank robber ... Why els?
The right to bare arms (according to the constitution) is for the protection of the citizens from the government. It was to ensure that the government would never be able to abuse the citizen for fear of a revolution and over throw. Obviously that is of no concern anymore because any attempt to over throw the government would be treason and you'd be thrown in jail for the rest of your life.

Answer to:
Why is music so addictive?
When I was 19 I would sit on my front porch in the summer listening to a band on my, (ha...) boombox. Everyday I possibly could. Im sure it drove the neighbors mad. About a year later I moved to a colder climate and one day popped that same tape in the player. Memories, feelings, and even the warmth of the sun came rushing back. Music is the key to a safe of experiences stored in our...

I don't know if this is judging, but in my head I place them in a certain status. If they have an excellent grasp of the language I think this person is well educated. And vice verse. Of course, this status is entirely limited to my grasp and understanding of the English language. I don't make life decisions based soley on someones ability to speak. Great Question.

If they challenge my belief I refuse the conversation. Most of my belief is built on faith and personal experience. I can't prove most of it. If they question my belief and why I believe what I do, the conversation is...enlightening.

My wife kept her last name. The first time she got married she explained the hassel of changing it. Then when she got divorced the hassel of changing it back. She didn't want to go through the process again. Its funny though. Her daughter, (my step) has her fathers last name. We are a 3 last name household.

Are you a jealous person?
No. There is no love in jealousy. Only control and low self-esteem. If you are jealous it is because of something you are doing or thinking. You don't give someone a reason to be jealous, you only give them a reason to re-evaluate the relationship. If you are untrustworthy, you give your partner the oportunity to leave or work things through. There is no jealousy in a healthy mature...

What drum brand is better, Yamaha, Pearl, or Dynasty. I really need to know. If you could give me a site that talks about them I would really appreciate it. Thanks
Never heard of Dynasty. Pearl and Yamaha both make high end and low end kits. Pearl came out with the Export series that rocked the industry. Sold thousands of them. Inexpensive and decently made. Yamaha has the same kind of series now. The stage custom. Decently made and inexpensive. It really all depends on your budget and what you like. Definatly research but you gotta play em to...

Is it okay to ask an ex "what went wrong?" a year after the break-up?
Sure its ok...but does it really matter? Why would you change who you are for someone that doesn't want to be with you? The reason she has might be the same reason a better girl (or guy)would seal the deal with you. You are who you are and should find someone that wants you. If you want to change for yourself, then have at it. But to find out why it didn't work with someone who...

Make sure they are in your home when you shoot. Shoot to kill so they won't sue you later. Be sure to tell the Police you felt your life was in danger. Don't lie, and don't plant evidence. Good hunting.

Who is a better drummer: John Bonham (famous for Led Zeppelin) or Neil Pert (famous for Rush)?
You can't say one is better than the other. You can list their abilities and mathematically say oh he's better or say you like one better than the other. but really....Bonham is a legendary Icon who influenced Pert. Bonham created a style of drumming that opened a whole new era. (Krupa did this as well) Bonham died at what...32-36? What could he have done if he lived to be Perts...

Yes. Wish I could give you names and titles but I can't. Sometimes Ill hear a song from my daughters iPod speakers and like it. When I ask her who it is she'll tell me some rappers name, I take a deep breath and just roll w/it. :)

Why isn't rap a respected genre?
Because alot of the rap you hear is defiant toward a larger uprising. The African American community, rightfully so, has been fighting for equality and abolishing stereo types. Rap music promotes alot of the modern day 'black' stereo typing. They are intentionally keeping their own race in a social downward spiral while sitting like fat cats in their million dollar mansions. I...

Argueably Maple is the best wood for making drums. Light and resonant. Birch, if not as good, close second. Darker sound. Depending on the quality and the manufacturer drums will have a mix. If you found out the meaning of life, would you share it for free, keep it to yourself, or charge fees for enlightenment?
I dont think we'd be able to do any of that. If someone found complete enlightenment they would transcend and no longer remain on the physical plain. Its our own responsibility to discover peace and enlightenment. Once that is done, why stay here? And whose to say your meaning of life is the same as mine?

Is it possible to have 23/8 as a time signature in a song?
Yes, but what it actually may be is two measures of 4/4 followed by one measure of 7/8. 4/4=8 eight notes. Or to create a four bar phrase you could have 3 measures of 6/8 and one measure of 5/8. Depending on the feel of the phrase is how you divide the measures.

How can I remember a whole song on drums when i'm recording if it's my first track. is there any tricks to help to figure out where i am in the song while i'm playing?
I hate doing that!!! You have to sing the song to yourself in your head. When there's no lyrics count your bars, or feel 'em, or hum to yourself what ever keeps you in place. If you read, you can write yourself a chart. Even a simple one. "Chorus=8 bars." "Verse I=16 bars." The best way is have the guitar, Keys, or even bass, SOMEONE, lay down a scratch track...

Answer to:
What is a mode?
Using the scale above, if you played the same notes but started on the F# you would be playing a minor scale. F# minor is the Aeolian mode of A. Whenever you play a minor scale you are just playing the major scale notes starting somewhere else. But then you have relative and harmonic minor which gets a little more tricky.

Ha...ok ok. The only thing that can make it better is how she uses it. Honestly, the way she walks, moves, facial expressions...etc. Jenny McCarthy is one of my favorites. Not because she has implants and fake hair, but because of her on TV personality. Her facial expressions, and humor make her even more beautiful. Attitude can make a beautiful woman a garbage pail kid instantaneously....

What musical instrument is most annoying in your opinion?
Anything used too much or out of context. I love the electric guitar w/heavy distortion. IE Pantera, Tool, Korn. Use that same sound for Dave Mathews or Sting (who I really dig) and it would annoy the hell outta me. Too much steel guitar in a country/Rock crossover defeats the purpose also.

How can I get better response from my bass pedal and bass drum head?
I use a graphite 8 ball, which is ironic cause its not round. Its a relatively flat piece of retangle graphite. Counter weights to off set how lite it is and you can adjust it so the entire surface hits the head squarley. If you are a lead foot, I wouldn't recommend it. Unless you are using a kick pad, youll tend to bust heads. The more solid the beater, the better the response. As...

A piece of music I'm playing has the "CUT TIME" logo, and it says "Half Note=108-112"; So does this mean that I should actually play this piece at a tempo of 216 Beats Per Minute?
No. Just treat the Half notes as one count. The cut time logo means 2/2 time. Two beats per measure and half notes equal one beat. Subsequently, you'll then count the quarter notes as "1 + 2 +" and so on.

How can i keep my snare adjustment knob from loosening during every song?
Most snare releases have a knob you can adjust. This is usually attached to a string or piece of plastic that holds the snares against the bottom head. Or maybe your snare release it just worn out. And yes,...
