That's easy - my Dad played the Dame in our dance school pantomime for years, so the picture I have in my head is of a pantomim dame, on stage with the rest of the cast!

I was recently in Florida when I met a child my age. We became very good friends and before I left I gave him my e-mail adress. He never responded and it's been a month since I gave it to him, he left the same day as me. Why hasn't he responded?
He probably lost it. If you emailed him, and he's anything like my son, he changes his email address constantly, forgets to let everyone know and then doesn't check his old email address!

Having seen your reason for travel I would say no. I am sure that they would understand you not wanting to travel with a sick child, and June is not that far away.

About Rental Property in Virginia
Tenant signed one year lease,
she sent her thirty day notice last week.
She has only been in the apt. for four months.
What are my rights as far as holding her to the years lease?
Obviously you will not be able to force her to stay. I'm not 100% familiar with the landlord tenant laws in VA (you can look those up - see links below). Usually what happens is that you have to do your best to get a tenant in for the date from which she will no longer be there. If you cannot get a tenant and the property remains vacant, she is liable for the rent until the property is...

Figuring your weight and height puts you at a BMI of over 28, which is above the normal range and, therefore unhealthy. However, if you are athletic and muscular, this BMI would be misleading. If you feel that you are overweight and would like to lose weight for health reasons, then you should give it a try, but talk to your doctor first.

Why is it that women in the US seem to spend so much time with gynaecologists? Here in the UK it only happens when we're pregnant or have a problem.
In the UK you can go to your GP for your annual check up and pap smear. In the US people tend to go to a specialist in whatever the area of medicine is. So, if you need a pap smear you go to your gynaecologist. So, you only see them once a year for the annual check up, just like you would see your GP in the UK.

I think i'm going to be single soon. My boyfriend of 2 years says he never wants to have kids or get married...thats kind of a deal breaker in my opinion. How do I get the courage to leave when I'm really happy besides these HUGE issues?
If having kids is a deal breaker, then it is a deal breaker. If you continue in the relationship still wishing you could have kids, then eventually you will come to resent him for keeping you from the joy of having children. You will constantly be playing the "what if, if only" scenarios through your head. Judging from the fact that you said he is 31, I am assuming that you are about...

Yes it does! I went to the theater last week and there were no arms on the chairs. The guy in the seat next to me must have weighed about 400lbs and he was sitting in half my seat. Definitely. It's the world's oldest profession, so we know that whether it's legal or not, it's never going away. First things first, what does your lease say? Are you a month to month renter, or is it a set term lease? What is the notice period for moving out? Once you are sure of your terms, talk to your landlord. Explain the situation and that you may have to break the lease. He may be willing to let you sublet, or if he can find another tennant he may just let you out of your lease.

As we know, some of the schools teach children about sexual intercourse some as young as 10! I do not think this would have anything to do with helping their education, it just opens doors for your children to experiment with sex! What is your opinion?
Like it or not our kids are going to find out about sex. As a parent I prefer that the information comes from me or from an educator, rather than friends on the playground who give misinformation. Kids will "experiment" whether we want them to or not, but if they have all the informationn they need they are better armed to make good decisions

What would you give for a real, working sonic screwdriver?
I would love one of those - just think of the possibilities. I guess, as it would replace so many tools, I would say around $3000. I do have the toy one, very disappointed to find out that it doesn't actually open doors or get cash out of the ATM:)

Answer to:
Do you prefer to be called by your first name or title by other people's children?
I prefer to be called by my first name, as it makes me feel old when somebody calls me Mrs. Howver, it seems that there are some parents who insist on their children using your titrle, no matter how many times you ask then to use your first name! Of course, in class the school rule is that they have to call me by my title!

My 9 yr old son is terrible when it comes to bedtime. He procrastinates and I have to tell him multiple times to brush his teeth. He obviously doesn't take me seriously. Any ideas? Beadtime is the worst!
Our son was the same way. We found that the most important thing is to have a bed time routine that you stick to. If bed time is at 9pm, tell him at 8:45 - you have 15 minutes to get your teeth cleaned and get into bed, or tomorrow bed time will be 8pm and there will be no TV/video games (anything that you know he hates to lose).
If he still likes you to read to him at night, then tell him...

How secure is wireless broadband, I have a wireless modem and live in a rural area.
As long as you set it up as a secure network and have a good firewall, you should be fine. Nobody is going to bother to take the time to drive around trying to find a signal and then attempt to hack your system, it's not worth the effort. (Unless you have classified government documents?)

My advice would be to get out. I have seen a relationship start like this. From ridiculing, it turned to constant verbal abuse and then eventually physical abuse. This man sounds like he is insecure and he makes himself feel better by ridiculing you, things will only get worse, get out now.

If you are coming into the US, you are not allowed to bring cheese, meat or fresh produce. If you put it in your suitcase and are stopped at Customs, they will confiscate it. You get a Customs form that you have to fill out. There is a specific question relating to food. If you lie on the form and they stop you you can be fined. However, it may give her the opportunity to see that the other children are not as bad as she thinks they are.

In the UK we have universities and colleges, and universities are 'better'. College is often where people finish stuff they didn't do at school. What does the term college mean in the US? Here, people who went to college sometimes get looked down upon.
College, as a term, is used interchangeably with University. A four year degree at a college/Uni in the US is a bachelor's equivalent to a bachelor's in the UK. A two year degree here is more like the sort of thing that you would do at college in the UK. Two year degrees are usually done at "Community colleges."
In the US people frequently use the term "college"...

What do you do when a toddler tells a parent they don't love them?

They also know that no matter what...

Not really. I just think - "what a jerk" and move on. I figure a comment like that is not worth the energy of a response! Also, other members will see the comment and think the same thing! Don't give it another thought.

How do indicate/say politely that you prefer money for your bridal shower and wedding instead of presents? No, I am not greedy. I will be moving out of the country after I get married & can't afford to ship everything. Thanks!
It may not be as expensive as you think to ship things. I got married in the UK and then moved immediately to the US. I registered at a major department store and they dealt with a shipper. All of my wedding gifts were sent directly from the department store to the shipper and then I took the rest of my belongings to the shipper. When I shipped my things I took a part of a container on a...

Looking for different recipe variations for Sheppards Pie, anyone found a sure fire winner?
This is how I always make mine:
Ground beef (boil it, then drain it to get rid of the fat)
Return it to the pan, add beef stock and gravy granules to thicken.
Pur mashed potatoes on top.
Adding veggies makes it into a cottage pie. You can put grated cheddar on top of the mash if you like it.
Srick it in the oven and bake until mash is golden brown on top. Serve with peas.

First try an Estate Sale, there are companies that specialise in this. They will value everything correctly and then hold the sale for you at the home.
There are also companies that will value the estate and clear everything for you, be sure to check them out with the Better Business Bureau and check references as you want a company that you can trust to give you a fair price for...

Can an apt. complex charge a pet fee and then also charge you for any damages caused? I thought that the $750 I paid was to cover damages, but I have just learned that it is just a fee and we will be billed for any and all damages.
Usually the pet deposit will cover thiongs like cleaning after you leave and damage too, however, if the damage done is more than the pet deposit covers you will be liable for additional charges.
Does your lease state that the dposit is for something specific? Does it state that you are liable for damage in addition to the deposit?

I didn't break any bones until I was 38! The first one was a broken wrist, which I did when I fell demonstrating how to turn on ice skates! The second one was a broken big toe when I was attacked by a falling jar of spaghetti sauce, the third - another broken toe, again from a food attack (can of soup). All of these were in the same year!

What is the longest amount of time one can get away with not watering their house plants? Is one month too long or will they be dead?
Of course, this depends on the plants, but as a general rule a month would be too long. I have some plants that I water once a week and others that have to be watered every other day. If you need to leave plants for an extended period, go to your local nursery and get a drip feeder. This is something that you plant in the pot and fill with water before you leave, then it slowly releases water...

Do you currently own a robe? If so, when do you wear it i.e. at night, after a bath, during the day etc..
I have several robes. I have a couple of thick fluffy bath robes that I wear when I get out of the shower, rather than using a towel. Then I have a couple of lighter weight robes that I wear on weekend mornings, when I don't have to get up and get showered and dressed immediately. I have those in full length and short lengths, depending on the season.
I love my robes.

I know this is gross, I'm sorry, but I've got a fever, headache, severe sore throat, with abscesses on my tonsils, and an earache in both ears. I'm going to the doc on Monday. What do you think they are going to tell me I have?
Sounds to me like you have strep. This is something I get on a regular basis and those are the symptoms. You need antibiotics ASAP , if this is the case. If I were you I would go to an emergency care doctor tomorrow, if you have one nearby. When I can't get to a doctor immediately I take dayquil/nyquil and ibuprofen in between dayquil doses.
Hope you feel better soon.

Do you prefer people to take their shoes off when they come into your house? Do you mind if they would rather have their shoes off, or should there be some sort of weird boundary?
We take our shoes off as we come into the house, but I don't expect visitors to do the same. If it's wet and mucky out, I just ask that people wipe their shoes as they come in. I can always mop the tile or vacuum the carpet - it's not a big deal. I want my visitors to feel comfortable and welcome.
As a caveat - I do ask the kids friends to take off their shoes - boys shoes are...

In what circumstances can a temporary borrowing amount to an intention to permantently deprive
If the item borrowed is not returned within a reasonable amount of time, or if the reasonable man would consider it an intent to permanently deprive. Converting the property, or disposing of it to another also would show intent to permanently deprive. With regards to cash, if you take cash you have to be able to return exactly the same cash, not the same amount - the exact same notes and coins.

we had a late potty trainer. In the end we tried potty training "boot camp." On a warm day we simply had him run around naked from the waist down, and spent most of the day outside. Typically girls are more mature than boys and at this age a 4 year age difference is common because boys of 18 are so much less mature than girls. 18 & 22 sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

I think parenting, on the whole, was stricter 30-40 years ago. you often hear people say things like "if I had said that to my father I would have got a slap." So, stricter, more physical? yes, better? that's debateable. All I know is that there are a lot of parents who let their kids walk all over them.

What's bad about having 2 checking accounts in a bank?
Nothing at all. The only difference it might make is if the bank charges for the account or transactions etc if you have less than a certain balance. It's easier to keep the balance at the right level in one account. However, if there are no such charges, or if you can easily maintain the minimum required balance, then it shouldn't be a problem.

How much does a parent's political viewpoint influence his/her children? I grew up in a family that thought a certain way, and so do I...the shocking thing to me is that my son, who is much smarter, feels exactly as I do politically! What do you think?
I think that parents views on anything, including politics and religion can have a huge influence over the opinions of their children. If you are brought up hearing only one certain viewpoint, it can almost be like brain washing.

How can one get motivated to get back out there and workout?
I would suggest working out with a friend or a personal trainer. Set yourself some reasonable goals, that are easy to achieve, that way you will succeed and feel motivated to continue, For example if your goal is to lose weight, set yourself a goal of a couple of lbs a week, rather than 20lbs in a month! If your goal is to get fitter, set the goal of being able to run for a couple of minutes by...

However, I would attribute this to the fact that the USA is such a large and diverse nation that they generate a lot of news within their own borders. It's natural for children to explore, so you probably did overreact a little. That being said, it's alos natural for you to freak out a little. You really need to talk to your four year old about appropriate and inappropriate touching. You should probably apologise to your friend, and explain that the shock made you just react rather than respond to the situation. She's a parent...

Aside from actually going to a dentist, when do you know that you just need a filling, or if you need a root canal (pain wise)?
Pain is a good indicator. If you need a root canal the pain is often far worse, often caused by an abcess. It's usually the sort of pain that isn't helped by regular pain killers.

Yes, I cannot resist the temptation to say, turn here, brake etc. I drive a truck and my husband drives a much smaller car, so he's not used to braking early - we always race up to the light and go through the windshield as he stops! So, I cannot resist!

What's a good duck recipe?
Not a recipe, but I notice that nobody has mentioned this. When you cook a duck you should pierce it all over and rub it with salt. This helps to relrase a lot of the fat. This should be done no matter what the recipe is.

Embrace 40! I turned 40 two years ago and I am enjoying my 40's. My children are finally both in school full time and I have time to do things for myself. Do something new for your 40th. I went skydiving!

At what age is considered too old to begin ballet?
You can start ballet at any age. I used to teach dance, we had a lady who took her first ballet class when she was in her 70's. Now, if you are talking about a child who wishes to become a dancer, then the earlier they start (after the age of three) the better. However, with determination and commitment as long as they start before their teens they can do well.

So my 5 y/o niece busted up her face on the monkey bars at her school....half her faced is brusied and broke her front tooth. I think school should replace all kind of metal bars on school play grounds...what do you think?
No! If the school started replacing or removing anything that could possibly cause injury, there would be nothing left for the kids to do at recess. We all grew up playing on metal play equipment and yes, sometimes we got hurt or scraped our knees, but we all lived to tell the tale. It's part of growing up!
