About me: To see my recent Activity, scroll all the way to the bottom of the page, and scroll up. For Q&A reference sections, FIND "Relationship Advice and Information", "Disciplining Children", "Other Stuff", "FUN!", "Answerbag Questions & Answers" headings.

NOTE: Links below are in "AB Blue" and may be a bit difficult to see. (Sample link) Each clickable link should also have an "(NW)" following them. Clicking the link will keep the opening page in THIS window (meaning your browser BACK button will work). Clicking on the NW will open the link just before it in a New Window (meaning you can close the window and return right where you were in my profile).

BillAbout me: To contact me (as a CL or otherwise), send an email to me at ab-AT-orangefrogproductions.com (remove the dashes and change the "AT to "@".) OR, message me. Far as I know, I'm the ONLY BigDaddyBS here. OR you can go to my AB User Guide - Policing the Site (NW), scroll down to the table of CLs, and click the link for the CL you wish to contact.
NOTE: Since Answerbag changed December 11, 2009, SOME of my AB answers and advice will not be correct. Because of the ongoing changes, I'm not going to edit/change it until things settle down. If you can't find the answer you want, contact me.

My username came about from playing video games back in the day. My kids had nicknames and I didn't want to use MY name (I was Daddy), and I'm tall (6'-9") and ... let's say "big boned", so I became "BigDaddy". When I got to the internet, I found someone else already used that name, so I added BS (my initials) to it to become BigDaddyBS. NO... The BS does NOT stand for "Bull-Sh*t" (although some may think I'm full of it! ;-) )

I'm into genealogy and local history. (Though with AB, haven't been keeping up with that, very well.) I have two boys, one in Lafayette, and one in Danville, IN, currently with his mother (my ex). (I'm centrally located). I met my current (2nd) wife online - She lived about three hours away. She came and visited a few times, then moved up when I had another operation on my foot. A little over a year later, we got engaged (see "The Bestest Birthday Ever (NW)" for details), and were married Christmas Eve, 2004. She has 3 kids from prior marriage: 2 girls, 1 boy (all over 20), and now, one granddaughter. (I'm a step-granddad.)

I have diabetes, and neuropathy in my feet. I've had infections and lost all toes to amputation. I can still walk, but am not supposed to for any length of time to prevent ulcers and infections. I have a wheelchair to get around the living room, kitchen, and deck, and a scooter for getting around elsewhere.

Late 2003, I tore my quad tendon from my kneecap. Sugery in Early 2004, Rehab through most of that, and at this point, I can only bend my knee a touch over 90 degrees for a while. I drive a van with hand-controls.

We have 4 dogs (3 black lab mixes and 1 rat-terrier/spitz mix) and 1 cats (indoor). Pics are supposed to be here (NW), how they were named here (NW), how well they "listen" to me (NW), and how they act (NW).

I like helping people out or making them laugh on AB, and getting responses (comments) that my answers were funny, good or make sense (validation of my ideas, I guess). Here's more about me and my "qualifications" to be an AB answerer (NW).

I also research Scams, Shams (infomercials), and Flim-Flams (Rumors, Urban Legends, and Trivia Lists) and post them and my findings on my website (NW).

I played guitar and wrote songs for years. Once I had my kids, I couldn't get them to leave my case OR my guitar alone, so I kinda put them away. I still have a 12-string (my favorite) and six-string acoustic, and a Fender Strat I have hardly ever played. (1974 Yamaha FG-160 (6-string acoustic), 1977 Yamaha FG-512 (12-string acoustic), 1994 Fender Stratocaster Squire [Series?] (6-string electric)). I worked with a couple of bands (sound and lights), and with a couple of them, sang harmonies from the boards. One of these days I REALLY have to get my guitar back out. Here's an answer on picking a first guitar, and some of what you will need to learn to play guitar (NW).

I like photography, and think I'm a decent photographer. I take a LOT of digital pictures and save them all - Well, most of them. I've learned to edit them, cropping the shots to what I want, and in some cases, cleaning them up a little. Here's an answer associated with photography: What is the best kind of camera to buy? i have a baby that i take pictures of every day, i go to a lot of different landmarks and take pictures while we are there, i don't want blurry or too much shadow pictures, i want them to look professional(NW)

There are a couple of people on AB that I have known a VERY long time - WELL before AB. The first is my son, Lazerus1500 (b:1984 - I don't like putting ages, since they change every year! LOL), and The Chief, who I met and worked with back in Lafayette in the early 1980s. Laz has a VERY sarcastic (and usually funny) way of answering questions. He actually has found a way to KEEP from being completely addicted to AB... One of these days, I'm gonna ask him about that!

The Chief... Well, he's about as straight-shooting as they come. Retired from the Navy, as a Chief Petty Officer, he always has been opinionated, knowledgeable, pretty objective (like me), and NOT afraid to say what he thinks. He knows or has opinions about a LOT of things, and, if you can intelligently argue your point, he will accept everything you have to say as your opinion, and be happy with that. He's like me in that everyone can have opinions, and we won't try to convert you to ours, just explain our view. If you don't like it, oh, well... That's YOUR opinion. If you do, cool. You will not be DRed because you disagree. You will soon be ignored if you are disrespectful, though. ;-) Here's his profile - http://www.answerbag.com/profile/?id=391040 - Read about him, from him, yourself.

Friends Requests
If I haven't had any dealings with you, don't ask to be a friend. Know that I will ALWAYS check at least your latest questions and answers, and maybe your ratings, before accepting you as a friend. (I have yet to deny anyone (This has changed, recently. I've denied a few with whom I have had NO other interactions with - one hadn't even asked, answered, or commented on ANYTHING). Please know that a rejection does NOT mean I won't ever be your friend. If you wish to try again, after we've had a few dealings on AB, then go ahead, and I will PROBABLY accept, then., and the only way you will be removed from MY end is if you do it from YOUR end. It's not that I'm trying to build up my friends list... It's more that I "lose" friends with difficulty. Don't get your panties all in a bunch. As you will read in some of my answers and comments below, I can be friends with both sides of an argument. I do NOT always try to reconcile them unless I, personally, see them raging at each other. And PLEASE NOTE: I CANNOT CHANGE ANYONE HERE or on my friends list. If they want to change, they will.

A poem © 1992 by Paulette Kelly

I Got Flowers Today

I got flowers today.
It wasn’t my birthday
or any special day.
We had our first argument last night,
and he said a lot of cruel things
that really hurt me.
I know he is sorry
and didn’t mean the things he said
because he sent me flowers today.

I got flowers today.
It wasn’t our anniversary
or any other special day.
Last night, he threw me into a wall
and started to choke me.
It seemed like a nightmare.
I couldn’t believe it was real.
I know he must be sorry
because he sent me flowers today.

I got flowers today,
and it wasn’t Mother’s Day
or any other special day.
Last night, he beat me up again.
If I leave him, what will I do?
How will I take care of my kids?
What about money?
I’m afraid of him and scared to leave.
But I know he must be sorry
because he sent me flowers today.

I got flowers today.
Today was a very special day.
It was the day of my funeral.
Last night, he finally killed me.
If only I had gathered enough courage
and strength to leave him,
I would not have gotten flowers today.

Disciplining children - What I believe
When you were a kid (living at home) did you get spanked or otherwise physically "punished" (including beaten) when your parents thought you did wrong? Do you think those spankings/beatings/punishments really made you a better adult? - http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/2189823

When our 2 1/2 year old throws a fit, my husband think there is something mentally wrong with him. You can't even try to reason with him(our son), he just sceams louder, should I be worried? I am a single mom and have 3 kids. Tyson is 6, halie is 5 and trinity is 2. I spank tyson and halie, and when trinity is older I will spank her too. It usually works. Do you think it's okay to spank? - http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/1567196

Newbies/Noobies: NOTE: When AB runs slow, don't hit the SUBMIT button on a new question or answer more than once. It will submit the question more than once, and duplicate questions is an AB no-no. ;-)

ALSO, If you include a link in your answer, and include the http:// , make sure there's no punctuation immediately before or after the link (ie: "(http://www.example.com.)", especially afterward. When AB makes it an actual link, it will "suck in" the punctuation marks. Make sure your link is surrounded by spaces. And don't just put something like "example.com". Make it a link.

NOTE: Trolls CANNOT be defined because of their + ratings given -I saw an ABer with 0% who was still quite active. They were not a troll. They had simply never given any pluses or minuses. Think about it... As long as SOME users have been here, if they do not use the point system at all, they'd be at 0%... If they rate a few up and a few down, with the majority as uprates, that could account for the a "+ratings given" of 50% or so, but 5-8 or so DRs do NOT make them a troll. It's the ones we KNOW are rating - which is actually impossible to do. I thought the same thing with a user whose rating was around 70%... I'm rethinking. If they don't rate everything, then how could you TELL they are trolls? - I think we have to change the definition of using that "+ratings given" to define a troll, in some cases.

So what is spam, anyway? - from http://www.answerbag.com/blog/comments/126
"No, not the canned meat product. We've had a flood of posts from people who have authored eHow/weHow articles (full disclosure: eHow and weHow are owned by Demand Media, just like Answerbag) who include links to their articles in their answers, and Answerbaggers have been clicking the spam flag button so often on these, the pixels are wearing off the screen ;).

So what's our policy?

1. Answers must be self-contained. If what's posted is only a link or doesn't address the question directly, flag away (except in those rare cases where the question specifically asks for just a link).

2. If the answer does address the question, it can also include a link for more information without being spam. For example, people summarize and link to wikipedia articles all the time. That's fine.

3. Regardless of the content of the answer, if the link provided isn't what it purports to be, flag it as spam or nonsense and we'll review it.

We use the above policy to decide which spam flags to accept or reject--and we've approved most of your flags on the eHow/weHow posts, because some of those posters haven't learned rule #1.

But we're always open to refining our policy. What are your thoughts about the essential ingredients that make spam spam?" (from AB-Rich's blog)

Moderating "Wrong Category" (My thoughts)
Moderating "Wrong Category" (My thoughts)
There are many times users will enter questions in the wrong category, for various reasons... The question actually falls into a couple of categories (usually an "Outside the Bag" subcatetory and an "Inside the bag" subcategory)... They can't find the category (use the search routine)... They don't KNOW there the category exists (again, use the search routine or use a higher-level category)... Or, they're just too lazy to look and pick the first category they find. THESE are the questions that should be moderated into a category WITHIN an Answerbag Category.

Some are not so obvious - For example: A "First thing that comes to mind when ..." question, unless it's an abstract thought, should go into (and will possibly get more answers in) the category of the subject mentioned, NOT in the "First thing..." subcategory of "Outside the bag". Some are VERY obvious, like "What do you think of Elton John" in the philosophy subcategory - and SHOULD go into the Music Genres and Artists (if not his own) subcat.

Be somewhat judicious in changing categories, though. Sometimes, older users know EXACTLY where they are putting a question, and get POed if they are moved (though it requires staff accepting the flag to do the actual move).

And, of course, there are those who put questions in wrong categories, setting someone up to get points. There is, of course, little to no way to prove this, but it happens, I'm sure. (In fact, SOME may be doing it in a sockpuppet account to boost their regular account or vice-versa!) - And no... Mentioning this isn't saying anything that people haven't thought of.

What do you think about reducing mod points from five to three, to help curb over-zealous "duplicate" and "nonsense" flagging? (Recategorizing would stay at five) - http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/1692346

You post a pic in an answer, not a question. If it is an integral part of the question, note that the picture(s) will be posted in your answer, then, once the question is posted, go back and answer your question.

1) Pictures MUST be on your computer.
2) Enter whatever you wish in the answer box.
3) Below the answer box there's a button UPLOAD IMAGE
4) Browse to your picture
5) Click Upload.
6) Do 3 & 4 for each picture you wish to upload.

NOTE: The community leaders are: (see the table at) - http://www.orangefrogproductions.com/ofp2m_faq_ab_policing.shtml#cl

Try to resolve personal issues yourself. Be as diplomatic as you can in comment threads. BOTH parties can be Penalty Boxed (PBed) if it really gets out of hand.

If you are having issues that require a CL's help, you notice spammers or offensive questions/answers/comments, copy the shortcut (use the URL bar at the top of your browser, or, if it's an answer or comment thread, on a PC, right-click on the permalink for the answer (in the header info), and COPY SHORTCUT. This will put it to your clipboard, and whichever way you contact them, you can CONTROL-V to paste it in your message.

You should first try to find them online. Go to their profiles, and look at their Activity Summary. If they have been active in the last few moments (less than five), click on that question, and comment that you need a CL and point out the question/answer/comment (paste the URL there).

If THAT doesn't work, use their email. NOTE: Cut-and-paste their email address into your email TO field, and if there are spaces, remove them. I'm not sure why, but AB tends to break some links that don't get translated (ie: Questions and profiles) and email addresses. (Maybe it has to do with length, and maybe the way it's stored?)

As a last resort ONLY, try the most recent blog at http://www.answerbag.com/blog (at the top). Click ### Comments, and enter a comment that a CL is needed at whatever question/answer/comment you need them at. (See note from Rich, below).

SOME CLs will respond quicker to emails, and some quicker to comments.

Only hit ONE CL, if you find them currently online.

RICH'S NOTE FOR THE BLOG: - "Please submit reports about individual threads or users via feedback, not the blog.

Complaints about penalty-box sentences should be also be sent to feedback, though I am aware of the irony of asking folks who have transgressed site rules to abide by them ;). Understand that all CL-imposed penalties get reviewed by me, and CLs don't have access to people's activity history at the same level of detail as I do. So in those rare instances where we do p-box someone, CLs' penalty recommendations tend to be much more lenient than mine. Galeanda's post is exactly right ("There is a big difference between someone that has never been PBed before and someone who has been there repeatedly and even had their sockpuupet in the PB. And some people calm down and behave after a warning whereas some continue till they get back in the box."), and creating new accounts to complain about original accounts being penalized compounds the problem: using AB in a self-serving manner, rather than respecting the community.

Also understand that we can only review what gets flagged or reported. "You let this stand, but not that" assumes we've reviewed both, which is generally not the case."

Rejected questions/answers or Moderation - If you get an email that a question or answer you asked, or a moderation you made, was rejected, and you feel it is in error, you can ask for its reinstatement in a couple of ways:

1) Reply to the email. State your arguments as succinctly as possible. Rich or someone else on staff sees each of these emails, and will double-check. If you receive a response, be happy. They get (I'm sure) HUNDREDS of these requests, as well as all the flags they must review, all the CL notes, all the... you get the idea.

2) Go to the question in question (use the link in the email), scroll to the bottom of the page, and click FEEDBACK. State your case (it's a small box, but allows a LOT of characters), and submit it. The same people will see it.

Remember, though... If you get a question that was flagged reinstated, it COULD be flagged by the same or another user... immediately, or in the future.

Do you respect the decisions that the AB staff makes? Really? If they were to make a decision right now, that affected you, how would you feel? Would you accept it and move on, or question their practices? (Please elaborate, there are a lot of variables) - http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/4210262

What are some things I've learned and figured out about AB?
Remember! Answerbag is a social place. People will ask questions, answer them, and discuss in the comment threads. There will be those with strong opinions. There will be those who believe THEY are right and anyone who doesn't believe in what THEY do are wrong. And some will become vehament about their beliefs. If you can't see both sides of an argument, you will proabably be one of them when YOUR beliefs are attacked.

Let it go. Ignore those who don't discuss but attack. It's hard, but it gets easier with practice. If someone attacks your beliefs and refuses to back down to a discussion, leave the comment thread - UNSUBSCRIBE. There's NO REASON to put up with it, nor is there a true reason to fight back. Remember that in sports and other places, the one who returns fire or punches is usually the one who gets in the most trouble. The same is usually the case here.

I'm not saying you don't have the right to defend your beliefs. And AB is a GREAT place to DISCUSS them, respectfully. But when someone obviously loses that respect and lashes out, leave them thrashing at nothing.

Oh, and for those who feel that DRing people and attacking them is great fun, you need a new hobby. Bullies are not tolerated here. The CLs and staff and many long-time users have declared war on intolerance. Take a look at your "+ ratings given" at the bottom of your points box. If it's below, say 80% or so, you have given a LOT of Downrates (DRs - "Not Helpful"s), few Uprates (URs - think "thumbs up"), and everyone who looks at your profile knows it. It is NOT a "badge of honor" to have this known about you. It makes people believe you are a troll or an AB stalker - One who follows certain people around, DRing their questions and answers, usually without leaving any type of comment). People will avoid your questions and answers, and you will probably lose a lot of friends if this percentage keeps going down. Rethink. Isn't it better to argue a point, leaving the points alone (No DR or UR). You can get the recognition you so strongly crave if your arguments are good this way.

And for those who are DRed a lot, by trolls, kids, or jerks - Who cares. Yes, it may hurt your Q & A percentages, and some of your Qs and As may end up in the negative (usually not for long... MANY others pay attention to this, and if they are good, you will eventually be URed). The points do NOT count against your points for levels - You will STILL go up in levels based on all positive points you have received. I don't get POed about it, any more. If I feel my answer was good, then I just put a comment to the DRer there... Something like "DRer - Explain how this answer does NOT answer the question, or how it is NOT helpful". If nothing else, when those positrollers (people who visit others' qs & as and give points away to them) see it, they may or may not up the points. Who cares. At least you have made your comment, and let it go.

ALSO NOTE: NO ONE but staff can tell WHO DRed you unless the DRer TELLS you they did. (Even then, someone may take "credit" when all they really meant was "I don't like your Q or A". You can't even go by the times, because someone may be commenting at just about the same time a "drive-by" DRer hits your Q/A. If you get a whole lot of DRs, report it to the CLs who will report it to the staff. You can also take a screen shot, and include it in an email to admin@answerbag.com. Give them the time-frames, and anyone you SUSPECT may be DRing all your stuff (and maybe those who answered YOU). There's nothing YOU can really do, but this. Again, if you retaliate, YOU could be caught and PBed, too. Besides, since there's no real way of you knowing if a certain person or people did or not, you could be wrong.

AB is a place to ask questions. It's a place to get answers. It's a place to have some lively (not nasty) discussions on numerous topics. And, it's a place to have FUN. Try it like that. You might find you like it a lot more than you thought you did.

BTW: Did you know you can revisit your old questions and answers, and give points (to a max of your level) even if you gave them points when you were lower level? I just found that out. COOL. Time to revisit MINE! ;-)

If AB shut down, what would be the last thing you'd want to tell your fellow ABers? - http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/3054898
