Answer to:
What do you find most embarrasing about the state you live in?
South Carolina has taken bad press to a whole new level in the past few years. We have moms who murder their kids a la Susan Smith and the latest killer of two in Orangeburg. We always have horrible test scores on everything from drop-out rates to SATs. I can't neglect mentioning our famous Gov'nor of Love and his hike on the Appalachain Trail which he found ran all the way to South America....
Answer to:
Is this discrimination? Dress code allows women to wear sandals, knee-length pants, and sleeveless shirts but men can't wear any of those.
it's the trade-off women get for earning 70 cents for every dollar men earn. Men also are usually not allowed to wear high heels, brassieres, panty hose, mini-skirts, or lace panties.

Did any other straight guys out there have a homosexual relationship as a young teen?
Of course, they have. It's called bi-curious and they have either had one and admit it, had one and lie about it, or never had one but thought a lot about having one. Any other answer is simply incorrect. And for the benefit of norton dot dot dot, I believe he doth protest too much which is just another way of saying, norton is likely not very comfortable with his own sexuality whatever it...

I hope that reincarnation is real so that I DON'T have to come back and do it again. I'm trying hard to do it right this time around and feel like if I learn from past mistakes, in this life and perhaps previous ones, then I will have reached that place where I get to graduate!!

How do I stop my kid from spanking and hitting other people? I tried time outs but it doesn't work. Is there a better solution to this?
A good friend who worked with child adoption services said the key to discipline is finding something that is more important than anything else to the child. For most kids in the adoption process, that important thing is good food. Now obviously you cannot withhold food from a child - that would be neglectful. BUT, when the rest of the family is sitting down to fried chicken or beef stew or...

Outrage...that must be rage that is outed, released, set free. So what is inrage...seething hatred? Doesn't that destroy from within?
Anger, rage, hatred, guilt, jealousy, envy are all destroyers from within. I think there is a line in a Don Henley song that says "if you keep carrying that anger, it will eat you up inside". So will other negative emotions. I've never heard of "inrage", Rosie, but it makes a lot of sense!

Does anyone know why some dogs are so affraid of storms? My dog is scared to death and will shake for hours even before the storm even gets here, i think he needs a valuim. He has never been hurt in a storm...
I had a dog once that came from a puppy mill in Kansas and was transported to the east coast in a tractor trailer filled with very young puppies. I believe he was afraid of thunderstorms for that very reason. Not sayin' all dogs that are afraid of storms came from puppy mills, only relating my personal experience.

why in human history are so few enlightened women compared to men..?
If, in fact, there are fewer enligtened women than men, it would probably be simply because women do not normally seek the same degree of glory that is sought by men. And they are not normally credited with such either.

Each state is a little different but the local Bar Association should be able to direct you to the proper agency for filing a complaint. Where I live we have an Office of Disciplinary Counsel which handles complaints against attorneys and their practice of law.

Cat 4 hurricanes are acts of God. Tornados are acts of God. Lightening-sparked wildfires are acts of God. Tsunamis, earthquakes, severe storms are acts of God. God had no hand in this disaster. It was corporate greed, pure and simple. A half a mil $ valve could have prevented this. I hope BP pays through the proverbial ass for the havoc they have created that frankly, NO amount of money...

Do you think rape is on the rise because of the clothing young girls are wearing?
Rape has absolutely nothing to do with what someone is wearing. It is a crime of domination and control over someone else and the victim may be 16 and scantily clad or 75 and covered from head to toe. Try to understand also that rape is not about sex or the sexual act. Again, it is about domination and control.

If your neighbor relates the same information you just did in this question, I would seriously doubt he could find a (reputable) attorney who would be willing to take this on. Too many variables, as outlined by Ringo, for you to be held accountable for something he undertook ON HIS OWN. Don't sweat it until you have been served.

How can one accept the fact that their lifelong dream will never be realized?
Too old, not enough talent, just reality, How to accept?
Dream a new dream. Sometimes we realize that what we dreamed of for most of our life, was not really the thing we most wanted. I didn't realize my dream job until I was 52 years old. If your dream was to be the next Carrie Underwood and you are now 60 years old and can't sing, then maybe your dream was not a dream but just an escape from reality.

I definitely would after assessing the situation. If the person is already engaged in conversation with someone, I would wait until they were alone and introduce myself. Chances are the correct answer to this question will vary from state to state. I would suggest contacting an attorney (or Legal Aid if you can't afford one) to see what rights and responsibilities go along with that inclusion. And be aware that the responsibilities may well outweigh the rights.

My son's girlfriend is pregnant. She is pressuring him into getting married. She is even threatening to keep him off th birth certificate as far as any legal name. Can she do this!
As long as she is unmarried, she can designate anyone or no one as the baby's father. If your son is wanting to be a part of this child's life, with or without the mother as his partner, you should make sure of two things: 1) he gets an attorney who orders DNA testing to confirm that the baby is, in fact, his and 2) a box of condoms to make sure this error in judgment is not repeated.

Good luck with those customers! Asshats like that are the #1 reason I won't work retail anymore.

Your local newspaper may be able to help you, either in person or on-line. If the newspaper is large enough, it might have archives of their old obits. Mine has them back to 1977 on-line and prior to that time, they can be obtained at the newspaper office.

Why is what happened in this news story, a "bad" thing or a "big deal?" The dude was DEAD! So what? Some bodies are CREMATED, ya know!
Thanks for shining the spotlight, once again, on my state! *embarrassed*
It's a big deal and a news story because it is illegal to desecrate a corpse and that is what the mortuary did. Yes, some are cremated, but the bodies are prepared in a respectful manner for the cremation. A body that is prepared for burial is entitled to the same respect, which this man apparently did not get.

Sometimes people will stay married "for the sake of...

NO! Jealousy is the absolute worst of all the evils in my book. Until you have been on the receiving end of an insanely jealous person's jealousy, you have no idea. Jealousy is not about loving - it is about controlling. I want no part of anyone who thinks because they are jealous of me that makes them love me. Just the opposite, it means they do not trust and consequently, cannot love.

I smoke and I think smoking should not be allowed in restaurants. Smell effects taste. That could ruin your meal. Do you agree?
I agree so much so that I refuse to patronize restaurants that still allow smoking. There are very few in my area now since both close counties have passed smoking bans in all eating establishments even bars if they serve food.
And kudos to you for your stand as a smoker!

I want to bust my co-worker for snooping through my personal stuff at work. Is it illegal in maryland to video tape her without her knowledge?
Video taping is sooo unnecessary. Get a trip switch that will loudly play some wild a$$ music as soon as he/she opens a drawer or cabinet or whatever they are snooping into. And make sure they cannot see where that music is coming from so they can't turn it off.
Like those greeting cards that play music when you open the card? That kind of thing. BAM!! Caught in the act!

Who think if u kill a burglar trying to break in your house is it wrong and should u go to prison
If a masked man comes into my house at 2 a.m., I cannot safely assume he is there to ask me out to dinner. I have been advised by the police to allow the burglar to get FULLY INSIDE your house before shooting him. A person cannot be shot while attempting to burgle, they must be in the act of burlging which simply means they have entered the house, not that they are attempting to enter the...

Is there a way to legally hide some of your income from an ex-spouse because of their greed to increase child support when you are already paying an exorbitant amount.
There are lots of ways of concealing income, none of them legal. It is just as illegal to hide income from a spouse as it pertains to payment of child support as it is to hide it from the IRS as it pertains to payment of taxes. I only know this because the Supreme Court where I work had a case about this very issue a year or so ago.

Oh, my God! Thank you for asking this -- YES! If it isn't her grandboyz she obsessing about, then it's her only daughter who doesn't seem to have a very good handle on child rearing or staying out of trouble. I do think...

I was a vegetarian for a few years. Not for any kind of political statement or anything. I just felt better when I didn't eat meat. Then one day I decided I wanted a big juicy hamburger, and I have been back on the meat since. I don't really eat a lot of it, but every once in a while, I just have an overwhelming desire to bite a cow in the butt!

Quite the contrary! I love having successful friends. It reminds me of the story about growing corn. If your neighbor grows good corn, chances are pretty good that your corn will be good, too. What can I say to someone who thinks that they are always the victim and advice is not what they want? How do I stay calm and not beat the $@#^ out of them upon hearing this everyday?
"If you want to change your life, CHANGE YOUR LIFE!"
Print the above and flash it at them everytime they prattle on about how victimized they are. No advice, no amount of sympathetic listening, no amount of enabling is going to ever make that person refuse to embrace their victimness. It sounds like it has already been adopted as a lifestyle. Good luck with that, friend!

The truth is your question reeks of sexism, but I will give you my answer anyway. Women, and I'm speaking strictly as a woman, don't want to be treated special. We want to treated the same way you would treat any other human being -- with care and consideration.
As for the equal pay, why don't you try working for 70 cents on the dollar and raising a family by yourself. I...

What could life have been like 50,000 years ago?
I would imagine it to have been insanely difficult...warring tribes would be trying to steal your stuff, you would have to kill your own food and eat it raw; if you had clothes, there would be no washers and dryers; you would be limited in how far from your place of birth you would be able to travel. Survival would be at the top of your list every single day of your existence, and anything you...

Someone stole my lunch at work!!! Has this ever happened to you? What did you do?
I used to work in the office with about six other people and a chubby-fingered woman named Vickie. She would sneak into kitchen and take part of my lunch periodically. I finally got tired of this and began labeling things in the refrigerator with skull and crossbones and the warning: "DO NOT EAT MY SCIENCE PROJECT!!" She never bothered my food after that.

I just watched a talk show on abuse..tell me abusers what gives you the right to put your hands on a woman?? Don't you see it as wrong?
People who are abusive [both men and women] feel their actions are justified as they believe their victim is property to be used as they see fit. The abuser sees him- or herself as better than others, knowing better, and often claims they are trying to educate the victim or correct their aberrant behavior.
Wrong? Absolutely, any rational person would view it as wrong.

If I told you my husband walked out in 1999 and that was the last time I saw him and I still haven't gotten a divorce, what would you say?
Like Ripple, I would check to see if he can be declared legally dead. You may not have the money for a divorce, but Legal Aid is available in all 50 states, and could advise you free or for some negligible amount what your options are. Some states, mine included, have a legal hot line that is manned by attorneys where you can call in with questions just such as yours.

20 years old, unbelievably gifted, capable of being amazing at anything and everything, exceptionally goodlooking, extremely intelligent, the list goes on! My question, why when someone is born with the best everything do they consistantly self destruct?
Because all those qualities you just listed do not equate to a good self-image or to a healthy self-respect. Even the most beautiful and talented suffer from self-doubt, and occasionally from self-loathing. Taking the time to develop a love of self is the first step to being beautiful, talented, amazing at anything, and most importantly, self-preserving as opposed to self-destructive.

Yes, I do, but I have a lovely little screened porch out back for my friends who smoke. Please feel free to use it.
Answer to:
Smoking is considered to be a bad habit. Then why some people keep smoking?
Same reason they keep going to the McD's drive-thru and shoving quarter-pounders and BigMacs in their face. People want what they want and the consequences be damned. People are usually their own worst enemy and smoking cigarettes and eating craptastic food proves that, along with all the other destructive behaviors that humans engage in.

How can two people make each other happy, be so perfect for each other and yet have so many problems to change about themselves that they can't be together? It doesn't seem fair.
I believe the answer to your question may possibly lie in their youth. I know my husband and I didn't get our act together until we were well over 40, and even then, it took until we were nearly 50 before we really "LIKED" each other. We have always loved each other, but LIKING each other was different. That and being able to live together without drama.

Are the two kids his? If not, then you have nothing to do except leave. If they are his, you will need to make arrangements with an attorney to file for child support against your common law husband. Then leave.
Don't allow anyone to stifle your dreams. Good luck with whatever you decide.

If you are giving a co-worker rides home from work and he asks to stop at a liquor store and then cracks open the bottle while you are driving and drinks it, what should you say?
I would tell the coworker that the rule is the liquor goes in the trunk until he gets home. I would further ask him to pitch in for some gas money. If he can afford to drink liquor (I can't), then he needs to have his own transportation or at least help out the person who is providing transportation for him.

I believe both to be equally culpable. But having said that, I do tend to agree w/ Anonymous' assessment that the one doing the contracting is unlikely to do so again, while the actual killer is likely to repeat his actions if the price were right. Tough question, but if I were the judge, I would make sure both got sentences that would not allow them to kill again.

It is more about self restraint than about age. Any that she had after you entered into an exclusive relationship with her. Any before you, no matter the number, do not count. An atheist does not believe in my God or any one else's. That is, by definition, what an atheist is: one who believes in no Supreme Being.
I don't think you could call atheism a religion. Religion is defined as "belief in and reverence for a super-natural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe". Atheist don't have those beliefs.

Seek an immediate second opinion. With the brown urine and black stools, I would opine that there is some bleeding higher in your digestive tract. The pain worsening should be an immediate indicator that you need to seek medical attention. If the doctors you are seeing don't know what's wrong, keep on seeing other doctors until one of them can figure it out.
Good luck - I hope you...

Is it ever okay to brag? Can you honestly say you have never done so?
It's not bragging if you can back it up with facts. People used to accuse my husband of bragging about his boxing career. He fought on programs with Ali and beat such notables as Marvin Hagler, and was a team mate of Ray Leonard's. When people would dispute his claims, I would immediately break out the scrapbook that I put together for him with all the newspaper articles, the...

How can someone be considered and called a hero when they are doing what is expected of them? For example, If you're trained in first aid for example, and you save a life using that training, how can you be rightfully called a hero?
Being trained to do something in a classroom setting and actually performing those duties in an emergency situation are two entirely different things as I am sure you, yourself, must know. If the question is who to ditch, I vote for the "best friend" (and I use that term in the loosest possible way). Your girlfriend was dead drunk - I would say it was not her fault. Find a better best friend, and keep your relationship in tact. You, as a couple, can recover from this. Your girlfriend may have some drinking issues that need to be worked out. Would you give up your beloved pet if your fiance issued you an ultimatum to do so? I'm a dog lover. He's not. And it's a dealbreaker for him.
If he didn't like dogs, we would never have gotten to the fiance stage. I seriously doubt we would even have had a second date. The very fact that he doesn't like dogs would be a dealbreaker for me to date him.

What do you think of ignition interlocks that prevent engines from starting until drivers blow into the alcohol detectors?
I think my nephew should have patented the idea twenty-five years ago when he thought it would be a good idea to have a device to blow into before your car would start. He said it would virtually eliminate drunk driving. He was 14 at the time and had just lost a good friend who died after being hit by a drunk driver.

What do you think will happen when the after the Mayan calander ends in Dec of 2012?
The Mayans have NOT predicted a cataclysmic event for 2012. That belief is dictated by the fact that the Mayan calendar (accurate to within nanoseconds for hundreds of years) mysteriously stops on 12/21/2012. Some have speculated that it means TEOTWAWKI (the end of the world as we know it). I personally believe that not to be the case. I believe it simply means the end to measuring time in...

It sounds like he was more than your wife's old boyfriend. It sounds like he was more of a family friend, and I can understand the MIL and wife acting like he had never been away. Get over yourself. She is married to you, and apparently it was you she wanted, not him.

Mint. My aunt had a garden patch with spearmint in it, and when I was little, I liked to lay down and roll in the mint to release the fragrance. To this day, when I smell spearmint (not to be confused with the most pungent peppermint), I still remember rolling in my auntie's garden.

No, because what may be appropriate for one 10 year-old may not be appropriate for someone else who is 15. Maturity levels differ greatly between people, so age restrictions on books don't seem right to me. Of course, the exception would be those targeted at people over 18, those rated XXX for example would never be appropriate for a ten year-old.

So Obama asked Rick Warren to give the Inaugural invocation. (You know, the guy who was quoted as saying "LGBTs will get rights when WE are ready to give them, just like blacks and women.") What's the best way to let Obama know this is a terrible choice
Let's see what he has to say before we condemn the choice. Some have speculated that this is the first of many choices that Obama will make that will be in an effort to bring people of opposing viewpoints together. I don't expect Warren to openly embrace gayness, but there may be some meeting in the middle that we are unaware of. It may not be as bad a choice as it first appears.

Do you have a humorous example of a relative of yours being a pack-rat? (I work w/ a guy whose mother accumulated 800+ used Christmas present boxes, collapsed and stored in bigger boxes according to color.)
When my mom died in 1984, I found a receipt and cancelled check for a 5-piece bedroom suite she purchased in 1939 for $59.95. I'm not sure why she thought she might ever need that again, but she kept it. She also had money sewn into the hems of two coats. It was only discovered because she used a different color thread...

What is your opinion, on woman who do not want to have children?
I think having kids is a very personal decision and one that people who not directly involved should stay out of. Frankly, I admire those who refuse to succumb to the pressure and take a stand to not reproduce.

Let her dig but remind her that you had a life before you were hers and if she finds things not to her liking about that, then she doesn't really want to work things out.

What's the best way to ask for a raise?
Do some homework and be prepared. List all the extra things you do that would entitle you to a raise and write a brief but detailed account of those duties. If there are no extra duties, but you have just been goig above and beyond what is required of your job, detail that. My point is simply to be prepared to present a compelling argument of why you deserve the raise.

What do you think of Clinton being our Secertary of State?
I think Obama is wiser than people are willing to give him credit for just yet. Appointing Hillary to this highly visable and active post is kind of against what people thought he might do given that they had some of their worst disagreements over foreign policy. BUT, he is now her boss, so that changes things a bit.

I openly speak out against Bush, McCain, AND Barack H. Obama... Will I be arrested, detained, and possibly tortured?
If you live in America, the answer to your question is no. Part of the beauty of being an American is that you CAN say what you think without fear of retaliation from the government. Now having said that, and having noted you are in the military, I would think it prudent to exercise some discretion is speaking out against your government. It is not illegal, but chances are pretty darn good...

I would go into a holding pattern. Just wait and see what gets served and in the meantime, let your wife's ex stew about the arrears. I don't know about your state, but here in my state, the father has no control over this issue after the daughter reaches the age of 21. The daughter would have to be the one to take this issue to court.

My husband has no children; he married me with my one child. He tells me that he has no will, yet there are many assets; hmmm. What are my rights to the home we live in, etc... when it comes to siblings. I reside in NY.
Call a local attorney and set up an appointment as soon as possible for you and your husband and have a will drawn up. You will feel better and your husband should, too. This will be for everyone's protection.
Answer to:
When a small child visits your home or office and the parents are offended by you asking the child not to press buttons on expensive equipment (or anything else that might break at the hands of a child) how do you handle the parent becoming angry at you?
I would sternly say to the child "stop that" and if the parent gets bad, I would ask for the replacement cost up front of what the kid is getting ready to break. If I don't have power of attorney when a child visits my home, then take them home right now. SOMEone has to be the flippin' adult...

I also think that clothes indicate the amount of self-respect a person has and no matter how old and tattered the clothes may be, if they are clean and the person is clean, I have more respect for them than for someone wearing designer duds who isn't clean or who just does not care about their appearance.

How far is the nearest library from your home? How often do you go there? Why?
The nearest public library is four blocks from my house. I have not been lately because I'm not reading as much as I once did - vision is crappy and I hate to wear glasses.
Answer to:
My boyfriend always tries to find excuses to let his dog (Staffy) sleep in his room when I am over. He knows I hate it and still does it! She makes the house a complete mess! How do I let him know that his dog is a DOG, not a human being?
The best advice I can give you is do NOT try to come between a man and his dog. The dog will win over the girlfriend every time. If the dog being dirty is an issue, try surprising your boyfriend by giving the dog a bath. If that is not physically possible (dog too big), try giving him a gift certificate to take the dog to a groomer. If the only issue is that the dog is dirty, that should...

What do YOU think is true beauty?
Often attributed to Audrey Hepburn:
For attractive lips, speak words of kindness.
For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.
For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry.
For beautiful hair, let a child run his or her fingers through it once a day.
For poise, walk with the knowledge you'll never walk alone.
People, even more than things, have to be restored,...

Is it sad for you that many people don't care about knowing the names of artists when they listen to music or watch movies?
Nah, it doesn't bother me. When I was younger I knew the name of all the artists, all the songs and the words to most of the songs that interested me. These days not so much. There are so many new artists arriving on the scene daily, it would be quite difficult to keep up with everyone anyway.

Answer to:
Is anybody else tired of children's names that are spelled like the parents are illiterate?
How about this one? A girl named Adnrea and they call it An-dre-a. My friend got in trouble in Human Resources because she sort of made fun but not really of the spelling of her name and asked if her momma really did spell it like on her birth certificate. When the girl answered yes, my friend remarked "well, was she smokin' something?" and kind of laughed, but made her name...

Do you have a home remedy of curing the hiccups? would you care to share it?
I have heard that a piece of red string or red thread wadded into a small ball and placed on the forehead will cure hiccups. I have not personally tested this theory, and cannot vouch for its efficacy, but I do know several people who swear it works. Weird, I know!

What do I do when my husband who says he loves me, still has feelings for his ex? He wrote her and told her that he misses them and that he will always love her. She doesn't want him back, and she hates me with her kids.
I would think you might be eternally grateful that your husband is mature enough to maintain a caring relationship with the mother of his children. He probably does miss them and he will always love her. That should not diminish the love he has for you. He's with you now, not her, so what's the problem?

They did, but it got blown up. I don't think they will try again. Someone might actually make it and wouldn't that be the end of the series?

Do you prefer padded or unpadded bras and why?
I prefer unpadded in warm months, but I like a little padding in winter for the obvious reason that I don't want my headlights poking out there.
Answer to:
I was recently given a speeding ticket doing 60 in a 45. The officer had NO lights on, not even headlights or running lights at the bottom of the car. He also wasn't parked under any lights, leaving him hidden. Isn't it illegal for him to ticket me?
It is not illegal for the police to ticket you when you are doing something illegal. If you are thinking entrapment, you are incorrect on this count.

Ladies: What are your thoughts on a guy bringing flowers along on a first date? Is it romantic, or a little too much for a first date?
Bringing along a nice thought like flowers should never be considered too much unless he bought out the florist and arrived with several dozen roses!
I think it is a very sweet gesture and it would seem obvious he wishes to make a good first impression!

I plan to wear a red blouse and black skirt to an important function this Saturday evening. This may sound silly but what color shoes should I wear?
I would opt for black along with black hose. Use the red blouse for accent and please don't try to match your shirt to your shoes. That is sooooo last year!

I'm 17 and I'm certain I'll never smoke/do drugs/drink alcohol/coffee ever when I grow up. Not even wine at special occasions or anything. I just don't think I need it. Am I in for social issues when I am older? Do people find that boring?
I applaude you for your stand against these things! Who cares what others think? Tell them straight up you believe in a healthy life-style and you do what's best for your body. If they find it boring, tell them to just IMAGINE that your sparkling water is actually vodka and tonic if it makes them feel better!! :D

I really like one of my guy friends. He's so amazing and everything I look for in a guy. But people around school are saying he's gay and it's not one of those rumors that has no base. I can see where they're coming from. What should I do?
I think unless those people who believe your friend to be gay have spent any time in his bedroom, then they know nothing about it. Tell him about the rumors that floating around, ask him if they are true and tell him you have an ulterior motive for asking because you would like to go out with him unless that scenario makes him uncomfortable. He will likely be honest with you. What have you...
