Ignatieff supported Harper, now he's talkin' tuff. Layton was gung ho, now he open to a deal. Will Harper continue to walk on air for another year or two?
Say what you will about Stephen Harper as a leader (he's terrible, etc) he is a master at parliamentary games, playing opposition parties off each other effortlessly. Because it takes all three opposition parties working together to bring down Harper's government, he only ever needs one partner to dance at any one time. With the Liberals now gunning for an election, you would think...

Mr. Shinohara immigrates Gavrilo Princip's family to America in 1900, so nobody assassinates Archduke Ferdinand 14 years later and starts World War I. What happens differently in Europe?
World War 1 happens anyway, triggered at a later, but inevitable date. Perhaps the Archduke Ferdinand lives out the remainder of his life and dies peacefully of natural causes. Pre-war Europe was a dry forest, waiting for the smallest spark to erupt.

How come Harper and Martin faced threats from non-confidence, while Mulroney and Chretien didn't?
Brian Mulroney and Jean Chretien were blessed with what today seems impossible: majority governments. That is to say, their respective parties controlled more than half the seats in the House of Commons, meaning that they were never in danger of being toppled by the opposition parties.
Since Chretien stepped down, no leader has been able to muster enough support in an election to command a...
Answer to:
Are there many immigrants in Canada? Where do most come from? How well have they integrated into Canadian society?
Immigration is one of the most important topics in the discussion of Canadian history. Canada is, similar to the United States, a nation of immigrant. Where these immigrants have come from has changed significantly in the last 150 years. Originally comprised of people of British and French backgrounds, Canada was soon welcoming Americans (Loyalists) after the War of Independence. Beginning in...

Canadian firm Magna is buying GM's European arm Opel & Vauxhal. Does Canada have any history making cars or is this a first for them?
The Ford Motor Company of Canada was founded in 1904, so you might say they've been doing it for a while. Ontario has traditionally been the centre of Canada's automobile manufacturing industry, mainly in cities like Windsor (across from Detroit) and Oshawa. Ontario has been hurt badly by the recent collapse of the auto industry.

Which campus of the University of Toronto is more well-known: Scarborough or St. George?
The St. George campus is the UofT's oldest (1827) and most well known campus. It contains the university's most iconic architecture (e.g University College, Robarts Library), the largest number of students and a highly visible downtown location. When people think UofT, they aren't thinking Scarborough.

Do you have any special "house rules" for when you play Monopoly?
I recently played a game with people who went by the book and it was a little disorienting. My house rules: money collects for Free Parking, no auctions, and only counting cash on hand in determining net worth for income tax purposes (speeds things up). I'm sure there are more, but these three got me in trouble.
Answer to:
What do you think of this "coalition" in the Canadian government right now? Isn't this just mutiny? Can someone explain this more in detail to me?
The proposed coalition government put forth by the Liberal and NDP, with support of the Bloc, is absolutely in no way undemocratic or illegal. It is how our parliamentary system works.
Stephen Harper won the last election, but with only a minority government. The onus was on him to work with the other parties to move ahead. That is how minority governments work. If you want to survive, you...

Answer to:
What differing conceptions of freedom did white people and slaves cultivate in the pre-Civil War "Cotton South"? How did the cotton economy-and its brutal slave labor system-dominate the lives of both white and African-American southerners?
Many slave owners held a paternalistic view of their slaves, and believed that their slaves were treated well and that they were better off as slaves than they would have been otherwise. When plantation owners began returning to their homes following the Civil War, many were surprised to find that their formers slaves had not held such rosy view of their time in the fields.

How did the 3/5 compromise over slavery affect America in the 18th century?

Answer to:
What regions of Canada are most diverse ?
Why are these regions diverse?
Where do people choose to immigrate to most in these reions and why?
Canada's large urban areas (Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver) are the most diverse in the country. Toronto is (arguably) the most diverse city in the world.
Immigrants often choose to settle down in major cities to be close to preexisting immigrant communities which helps minimize the culture shock and provides social outlets where otherwise new immigrants might find themselves isolated.
Answer to:
Was there a Canadian revolution?
Most notably perhaps were the Upper and Lower Canada Rebellions of 1837 and 1838. In typically charming Canadian fashion they were both short and orderly but had long term consequences. You could make the argument if need be that they were an important early step on the way to Confederation in 1867.

How can people honestly believe that the Holocaust DIDN'T happen? Did 35 million or more people just suddenly disappear between 1939 and 1945?
Holocaust deniers are generally neo-nazis who believe that the only real road block to re-establishing Nazism as a viable political position is the continuing lingering memory of the Holocaust. They understand that as long as their ideology is tied down in memories of genocide, they won't be able to get anywhere. Fascist Nazi ideology is still (thankfully) a non-starter in the west.

Yes, absolutely, emphatically, yes. The Leafs are no good and the best thing to do now would be to blow it up and rebuild, because the playoffs are not going to happen for Toronto whether Mats Sundin plays or not.
Of course the larger problem is Toronto's embarrassing management situation, and until that's resolved (sometime in 2015) don't expect any steps forward.

It's looking like Nashville is going to leave sooner or later (another season or two) and it's awful but one of the front runners to house the Predators is Kansas City. Toronto deserves another team, and Winnipeg could support a team, and Seattle would probably work and even Las Vegas would be fine as long as it wasn't Kansas City

Soccer fans can get satisfaction simply from a well placed pass, a close shot, or worst of all, the zero-zero tie. Can you imagine a 0-0 game being recapped on ESPN? Soccer just...

What do you think about the Saddam Hussein verdict and sentence?
Marshall McLuhan once said, "Convictions depend on speed-ups; justice requires delay".
They got Saddam all right, but so what? On the 30th of December, they executed him, after a hasty excuse for a sham of a trial. Was Iraq really any different the next day? What did executing him accomplish, other than proving the ineptitude of the Iraqi justice system and sowing the seeds of...

What do you think about people who eat fast food everyday trying to sue the fast food companies because they have become obese?
Well, ok, the consensus seems to be overwhelmingly against our litigious fat people, and for the most part, so am I. It does smack of opportunism and greed, and it would perhaps serve as an endorsement for abandoning personal responsibility and sound judgement by we the consumers.
However, there is something to be said for corporate responsibility. Yes, we may have a choice whether to eat...

What is the explanation for the winter paradox, that is, the weather keeps getting colder even after the daylight hours get longer?
During the warmer months, the earth absorbs heat from the sun, and then slowly releases it. Because of that, we don't begin to feel the full effect of the decreased sunlight until a few months after the fall equinox, and conversely, we don't begin to feel the full effect of the increased sunlight until a few months after the spring equinox.

Not that I shop at Wal-mart mind you. Just thought I'd make that clear.

I do agree with it... but I think it's more because I'm currently receiving it, then because of any deep rooted political beliefs. Though, I'm fairly confidant that if the government wasn't forcing my fast food company to pay me my $7.75/hour (that would be in Canadian dollars), that number would be somewhat lower.

According to Karl Marx, what are the pre-requisites for socialism and communism?
I was learning about Marxist theory a few months ago, and my memory might be a little fuzzy, but here we go anyway. Before a society can advance to communism, it must first have a bourgeois class and a working class. Because of the inherent flaws in capitalism (so says Marx), the workers will be continually alienated and marginalized, while all the wealth will be gradually consolidated in the...
