Answer to:
Can a dog be knocked out with a punch?
yea, I actually know someone that did it to his dog... lets just say I'm not a fan of him, and regardless of how hard he begs, he is NOT allowed to watch any of my dogs... or even be alone with them for that matter.

Answer to:
My dog is 4 weeks pregnant can you tell me at what stage can you feel movement from the babies
Generally you can feel them move at 7 - 8 weeks really well. If you can get your dog to stay really still and calm, you might be able to feel the pups at 6 weeks.
Answer to:
My dog is about 35 days pregnant and when she pees; there is a clear mucus liquid. Should I be concerned? or is this normal?? I have been trying to look it up but cannot see anything regarding this sign.
In my experiences this is normal, just as long as any discharge that she has doesn't smell bad or have blood in it everything should be fine... Of course only a vet can know for sure, but everything is more than likely OK.
Good Luck..
Answer to:
My dog got dun on the 1st of december i dont know if she is pregnant but when i touch her nipples a clear liquid comes out! is she pregnant?? please help
If your dog finished her heat on the 1st of December she would have already had her pups if she was pregnant. She would have to have been in the flagging stage of her heat sometime from Dec 2nd - Dec 9th if she was due today (Feb 3rd).
So I doubt that she is pregnant.
Answer to:
If my dogs mother was bred on 3-6-2003 approximately when would my dog have been born and how long after birth are dogs typically taken away from the mother?
A breeding on March 6th would have produced a litter born between May 1st and the 8th. The suggested age to let the pups leave their mother is 8 weeks old which would have been June 26th - July 3rd, but I have seen plenty of people send them home earlier than that, anywhere from 5 weeks (although some people will send them home even earlier than that).
Answer to:
Do any of you show your dogs in conformation, agility, obedience, rally or luring (or others)? If so, what breed do you own and how long have you been competing? Do you compete in AKC events or non?
I show my dogs in Conformation. I have American Pit Bull Terriers, they are shown in the UKC, and I have an American Bulldog (I don't show her yet, but I am wanting to start, she would be shown in the NKC). It is a lot of fun, I really like it.
I would LOVE to do Luring with my dogs.. I think they would love it.. and just think how good they would sleep when I got them home :)
Answer to:
What is a good family dog, that doesn't have bad issues: Medium size, cute, not chiwawah (thats not how you spell it) something different!
I know your gonna think I'm crazy, but American Pit Bull Terrier. Make sure you go to a REPUTABLE breeder (do not just browse through the paper and by the first one you see. Do some research, meet the parents, look for a less dominant one. The biggest issue with the breed is that it can be dog aggressive, but if you go to the right breeder you can get a dog that won't have that...
Answer to:
How can you get your dog to behave at the door?
When someone knocks on the door, put the dog into a sit and tell them to stay. Then answer the door. It helps if you have someone come over specifically to help you address this behavior, you can have them knock on the door and then you put the dog in the sit-stay, then start to open the door, if the dog moves, you close the door and put the dog back into the sit-stay and try to open the door...

Answer to:
What can I spray on my dogs that will keep them away from each other while the one is in heat? I have one female and 3 males! Is there anything that will be disgusting to them?
No. There are some sprays that some companies sell, but they will not prevent pregnancy! You will have to keep them separated. I suggest crates in DIFFERENT rooms, you practically need a bank vault to put her in, expecially with 3 males. Be VERY careful, males are very determined when a female is in heat and they can do amazing (and destructive) things to get to her.

Answer to:
Does anyone know how to help a shy great dane get over her fears?
A place with a decent amount of people and LOTS of treats (like her entire days worth of food, instead of feeding her).. Reward her while people walk around at a distance from her, so she can associate people with good things. Then move closer and keep a positive attitude while treating, especially praise her when she doesn't act scared with new people walking by. Work your way closer...

Have a spayed dog about 8 years old she stopped eating and has a vaginal discharge that is pink and mucus. No vet till tom any thing I can do to help her. Or what might be wrong.
The discharge sounds like an open Pyometria, but if the dog is spayed that shouldn't be possible. Do you know if she was fully spayed or if she just had her ovaries removed (which is not standard, but can be done). Does the D/C have an odor? It's deffinately something that the vet will need to check into.
In the meantime try to get her to eat a little something, maybe some boiled...

I have just got a beautiful 1 year old lab however she does not fetch, she runs to the toy and sits down, if i call her back she leaves the toy. Any tips please?
That sounds like some AWESOME training!! You might want to think about how to maintain the ability to tell her to do that, that way she can fetch or leave it alone...
Answer to:
I thought my puppy was doing alright in the house training department, now he seems to be going the other way! and it is so frustrating... any tips?
Just keep up your training! I know from experience how frustrating this is.. I actually posted the same question a few months ago, I was so frustrated! I had mine trained and she relapsed several times.. I think she is good now, lets hope.. But I just had to stay on top of her and keep it up.
Stay strong and good luck.
Answer to:
Do you treat dogs like people and/or vice versa?
Well the dogs are treated differently... I don't expect them to clean up after themselves :) it would be nice if the could! But I do love them like my kids and they are given everything I can afford to give them, they live in the house with me, they get love, they get in trouble if they are bad.. but they tend to get corrections rather than punishment.
I think I treat my dogs better...
Answer to:
Today on robin she told about a dog that saved a family but pitbull was never said but if they get in trouble the name pitbull is spoke 5 or6 times why do they do that they never get credit for anything but baddog.
you should call the show and complain.. either that or if its a call-in show call next time they are talking about it and ask what breed the dog was so they have to say it:)
It's wrong what they do to the breed. I had one of my pups out at a christmas event for dogs the other day and some weiner dog just went off on my pup for no reason! Everyone looked at my pup like he had done...
Answer to:
Has anyone had their elderly dog lose fur due to skin mites? My 14 year old dog has recently begun to lose fur from his back legs. The veterinarian said it is due to mites which his immune system is having a hard time coping with due to his age.
Usually this is treated with daily, weekly, or monthly ORAL doses of 1% injectable Ivermectin.. I can give you more info if you want, you can get it online, or at a local farm supply.
Answer to:
My vet said to bring in my animals if the outside temperature is 25 degrees or lower. Are you remembering to bring you canine friends inside out of the cold weather this winter?
My dogs are always inside :) They hate even going out to the bathroom when it's cold or raining, they're a lil spoiled.. When I open the door to let them out they look at me like "WHOA, You want ME to go out there?!? Have you lost your mind lady?" lol. Oh and don't let them not have a nice warm blanket fresh out of the dryer, you would think they were being abused...

My dog opens doors by the handle, and then closes them behind him with his nose. He keeps locking himself in the bathroom, then ruins the drywall trying to get back out. Why would he do this? What can I do to stop it?
how about finding a way to make it so that the door stays OPEN, as in so he can't close it. Maybe a hook and loop type of latch so that people can still close it when they need to, but you can make sure he can't close it when you aren't in there... He can't possibly lock himself in there then :)

My puppy sometimes drag his butt on te floor. why do dogs do hat?
I would get him checked for worms and other intestinal bugs like coccidia... I tend to doubt an anal gland problem on a PUPPY, maybe for an older dog that would be an issue.
Answer to:
Does it benefit dogs in some way to participate in dog shows, or are they just occasions for humans to indulge in their obsessions?
I show my dogs, for the individual dog.. It doesn't benefit them other than giving them something to do and they usually love it.
It benefits the breed as a whole. The dogs are judged on a breed standard that includes the dogs structure, appearance, and temperament. The best dogs win titles (Champion, Grand Champion, National Grand Champion, Etc) these are the dogs that should be...

I JUST GOT A PURE BREED MALTESE DOG FROM THE SPCA. HE WAS VERY SKINNY. I HAVE HAD HIM AT 3 DIFFERENT VETS.. THE LAST VET TOLD ME THAT I SHOULD FEED HIM WHATEVER HE WANTS. THE ONLY THING HE WILL EAT RIGHT NOW IS CAT TREATS AND MEAT BABY FOOD.ANYTHING ELSE?
Have you looked into raw feeding?
Either that or try cooking up some chicken, ground beef, and other meats... I haven't found a dog that will turn up real food. Kibble ("dog food) isn't very interesting or the best for the dog. Also try cooking up some oatmeal using some broth (chicken, beef, etc) in place of water and see if he'll eat that.
Answer to:
My 14 week old puppy bitch has a discharge from her vulva is on second lot of antibiotics it is lot better but not completely gone what can it be vet says uine infection
i agree with your vet, thats exactly what it sounds like.
I hope you aren't planning on spaying her right away... The best way to get rid of the infection is to let her go through a heat. You can spay her after that, but it would be best for her health to let her go through a heat, at least give it a try. As long as you don't let her get pregnant, no harm can be done by letting her...
Answer to:
My dog, had a mucusy discharge yesterday, she's very tired and not moving much, nd has milk leaking is this the early sign of labour or could she have complications?
yes, these are signs of labor. You probably are already having puppies right now, if not they will probably be on the way very soon. Make sure you stay with her at all times to make sure there aren't any problems.
Answer to:
My beagle has had demodermic mange for a year and we still can not find a way to get rid of them, we have tried about seven dips, many anti-biotics, shampoos and nothing is working! help
Demodectic mange is a natural mite that ALL dogs have.. The problem with a dog that is actually breaking out from it is that dog has an immune defficiency.
It is usually treated with Ivermectin given daily by mouth for about a month (your vet should know about this) if your vet doesn't know.. how much does your dog weigh?
Also, to try to help the dogs immune system strengthen up.....

I have a 1/5 year old male min pin. He is disgusting. His urine smells really bad and he has diarrhea all over his kennel 2-3 times a week. What is this?
I had 2 males that have done that. I switched them to Raw feeding and I also experimented with feeding times.
I found that with my dogs the raw stopped the diarrhea, and feeding in the morning stopped them from going in the middle of the night. I still have 2 younger dogs that I can't feed after 4pm or they WILL go in the house in the middle of the night. The odd thing is that when I...

Ok, now that my Jack Russell is pregnant, she wines constantly. What is going on? I can't do anything to help her. Anyone have any thoughts?
Take her to the vet! In the meantime - make sure she has all the food and water she wants, also start thinking about her whelping area and box. Make up a temporary box right now with lots of soft blankets, that might calm her down.
When was she bred? How long has this been going on? She might be in or going in labor, a pup may be stuck. You never know, especially with small breeds.
Answer to:
I have a prego mini dachsund..I don't know her exact due date but shehas breathin heavy and restless at night and sleeps alot during day.she is runnin fever and lickin her butt alot..can anyone help me with what may be wrong with her.
she might be going into labor. Do you know when she bred? or when she started her heat? I can figure out a due date if you give me either, but a breeding date would produce a more acurate estimate.
Answer to:
How do you get your dog to walk on a leash with out pulling you around? we have TWO pitts (very loving) and i am about 120 lbs.
I weigh 110 lbs and I have 4 Pit Bulls that I walk together. With multiple dogs of this strength they have to listen in addition to not pulling.
You should start by training each of them sparately, Luckygrrl provided a good technique. Prong (or Pinch) Collars work well too, as long as they are fitted correctly. The collar should be up high on the dog's neck, right behind the ears....

Answer to:
6 day old puppy how much ounces do I feed her ? her mother passed away
I was told that you weigh the puppy in ounces and then give that much puppy formula in cc. So a 5 ounce pup would get 5cc every two hours, a 15 ounce pup 15cc, etc.. If the pup isn't getting enough it will probably cry a lot and it won't settle and go to sleep, although it will cry if it is too cold as well. Make sure you keep the pup warm because they can't digest their food if...

Two pups (1 Male, 1 Female) from studding out the male

Why does my 2 month old chihuahua baby whinnes and crys at night when in the crate to go to sleep? I've had him for 9 days now and Im trying to get him used to the crate for sleeping and such. I think he misses me when im gone .
What do I do?
DO NOT take him out when he whines! It will only encourage him to keep doing it because he is getting the desired results (getting out of the crate) when he whines.
Make sure he has something soft to sleep on in there. I used to put a blanket in with my pup and then I would put a stuffed animal in the dryer for 10 min or so, and put that in the crate too. The warm toy will ensure that he...

My puppy is only 11 months, she will be a year old in a week. She isn't spayed and she was in heat about a month ago...now her lower nipples are so large and have some kind of "build up" inside. I know for a fact that she is not pregnant. What could it be?
Bitches often go through false pregnancies after their heat. Watch her closely, because it sounds like she is producing milk... which because she doesn't have puppies will not get drained out and could very easily lead to mastitis, which is a VERY SERIOUS infection. If you feel any hard lumps anywhere in the area, or if she refuses to drink or eat, or if she becomes lethargic (stops...

I have an AKC female boxer who just finished her cycle. The end of last week she may have locked up with my neighbors mixed breed. Will this ruin any future litters or having future litters registered with the AKC?
No it will not "ruin" her. As long as she is bred to another registered dog, the puppies who are produced by 2 registered parents can be registered.
Answer to:
What is a designer Dog?
They are the fancy mixed breeds such as Labradoodles, Goldendoodles, and other similar breeds. "Designer Breed" is basically a fancy way of saying a MUTT that "Breeders" came up with to make their mixed breeds seem better than others. The only thing that makes them different than the other mutts out there is that normally both of the parents are registered (a registered...

I think it could work, make sure she has a covered area incase it rains or something.
Also WARNING, the bully breeds are notorious for being stolen! This is true throughout the country so be aware of this risk, you could come home and find your dog gone. I always leave my dogs inside, they have crates, I also have an ex-pen so I can make a "yard" off of their crate all in the...

Hi I have a year old male labrador ,he still wets at night but is clean at day can someone help me solve this as its driving me mad getting up at 4am!!!
I would try taking away his water 2-3 hours before bed.
Let him out, pick up the water (let him see you taking it), then 2-3 hours later.. right before you go to sleep let him out again and as you go out tell him "Good night" or something that will mean the last outing for the night. Once he figures out the routine, he should stop. This is how I train my pups, I don't have...

5 y/o male, neutered boxer, never aggressive until about 8 months ago. Doesn't snarl, show teeth etc. Just randomly attacks other dogs. Why?
You should take him to the vet and have some tests run on him. Thyroid problems can cause aggression. I am sure there are other medical reasons that can cause aggression. Seeing how this is a recent issue and not something that he has always done I highly suspect a medical reason, I can't really see any other explanation. Temperament change that fast doesn't make any sense, unless...
Answer to:
My dog stayed tied with her mate for 5 minutes. Could she be pregant?
The length of time they are "tied" doesn't really matter. What matters is the timing in your female's heat cycle. As long as your female's eggs were fertile during the 24-36 hours following the breeding. It is all about the right timing, not the amount of time (Quality not Quantity) :)
Answer to:
Will a stafforshire bull terrior get on with cats if the staffy is a puppy when they are introduced?
Yes, I have seen plenty of them getting along just fine with cats. Just make sure the cat is ok with dogs because if the cat is scared and hurts the pup it may cause the pup to not like cats.

I have yellow lab and she will be a year old November 29, 2008 and I am wanting to breed her. What is the best age to breed her?
A dog should not be bred before 2 years of age. Let her go through a few heats and mature fully. That will ensure a healthy litter, a healthy momma dog, and will reduce the chances of your female rejecting the litter. 2 years is the absolute youngest, I like to wait longer... My first litter, the mom was 3.5 years. Not to mention, breeding on the 1st or even 2nd heat would be like a human...
Answer to:
When is a dog considered 6 mos old? I mean... My Dane was born 4-23-08. On 10-08-08 he will be 24 weeks which is 6 mos at 4 weeks per month. But technically six months would be 10-23-08 because of a couple months having 5 weeks.
It would be the full 6 months, not weeks.. at least I know thats the definition for the UKC as far as conformation showing goes. Meaning 10-23-08 for your pup. I think it is generally considered to be by actual full month in most settings, I always define the difference between 12 weeks and 3 months on my pups, even if its only 2 days.

Can you give a dog a human pregnacy test?
No, human pregnancy tests work by detecting human pregancy hormones. Those hormones are not produced by dogs.
It is a funny visual though, I could just see you chasing your dog around the back yard with a little stick, trying to get her to pee on it.. LOL
There is a blood test that can be done on dogs, but it isn't very reliable and by the time it MIGHT work, you should be able to...

How many litters can a Maltese have
CAN they have...
That all depends, they CAN have a litter every heat (2x's a year) until it kills them at a fairly young age. This is what puppy mills do and it is very difficult on the female. If you care about your dog and her health this is not what you should do.
I suggest waiting 2-3 heats between breedings and never breed before 2 years of age.
There isn't a set...

Will doing multiple xrays on a dog while pregnant harm the puppies?
I seem to remember reading somewhere that multiple xrays should be avoided if they are not absolutely necessary. Can you litterbox train a small dog like a cat?
I train my puppies to go in a box with wood chips (Aspen) and it works quite well. Some of the pups refuse to use it after 9 weeks old though and insist on going outside. But if you keep it really clean and away from where the dog has to sleep it might work. It's worth a try.
I do want to add though that dogs are not like cats. Just because your dog doesn't have to go outside to...

What dog food is the dog fed? If it is a grocery store brand (meaning ANY brand that can be found in a grocery store), that may be the reason. If the dogs food isn't worth a darn, your son's poo might just be better quality than the dogs food.

I first suggest a vet visit! There might be something wrong and fixing the problem should fix this issue.
This dog should have NEVER been bred this young! I am tolerant of people who breed dogs without showing or who breed (or allow) mixed breedings or even dogs without papers. But there is absolutely NO excuse or reason to breed a female before 2 years of age! It wouldn't suprise me...

Answer to:
How long does dog birth take
The actual birthing process starting from the birth of the first puppy, depends on the size of the litter, and the female.. I have seen a 30 min. process, 2 pups. Have also seen 10 hours, 8 pups. I have seen up to 12.5 hours, 8 in one and 9 in the other.
I think the most important thing is to know what the signs of problems are and act quickly if you see any of those signs.

Answer to:
Roughly when should a bitch have her first heat cycle and can you then breed off her the first heat cycle or should you wait for her second ive got a labrador
When to expect a first heat depends on the breed, since you indicated that... anywhere from 8-12 months. You should not breed a dog (especially a female) before 2 YEARS of age. Even then, most labs that I know tend to be "puppies" until 2.5 or 3 so I wouldn't breed until she mentally matured. At the very earliest a 2nd heat, but you can stunt her growth if you breed her too...

You cannot make your Pit Bull bigger or "buff" by doing anything. It is a complete myth that you can do this. People try doing barbaric things to their poor Pit Bulls like walking them with HUGE chains around thier necks that bang into their legs, it won't do anything for the dog except hurt it.

Put her on a leash when people come over and make her sit next to you, ask your guest to ignore her, don't look at her, don't talk to her, don't pet her, only allow your guest to pay attention to her when she is sitting and calm. As soon as she starts getting hyper again immediately have your guest ignore her again. She will learn that she only gets attention when she is calm.

Can a male chihuahua mate with one of his female chihuahua puppies after mating with another famle chihuahua outside the bloodline?
If you are asking will he or is it possible, Yes it is... Is it a good idea? No. It is never a good idea to breed dogs this closely related. Only eduated breeders with full knowledge of thier bloodline(s), history of the dogs, and FULL health testing should even think about a breeding this close.
I would advise you to keep them away from each other when she is in heat or spay or neuter one...

I say he'll get used to a crate! put a blanket that you don't care about in there, they are cheaper than couches and will keep him occupied. You could also put bones, and toys in there. There are a few ways to get him used to it. One way: put up the crate in an area of the house were you hang out (like the living room) make it comfy, and then don't make a huge deal out of it. If...

I've always disliked pitbulls because of their agression towards dogs and the fact that a lady's pitbull attacked my dog loving 6 month old puppy at a DOG PARK. I really don't want to predjudice the breed, so can I hear some of they're good points?
Registered, well bred American Pit Bull Terriers, are EXTREMELY human friendly and have excellent, stable temperments, and any good owner will be able to predict their dog. The biggest issue is that there are TONs of people breeding pits that don't know the first thing about the true, correct American Pit Bull Terrier. These people get a "pitbull" for $200 off the side of the...

Hi i have a pregnant boxer dog she is due in a day her mucas plug came out 9:30am this morning and she has been doing the odd scratch but ate her food and hasnt been panting , her temp is 98, i just wondered if any one thought she was in labour thnx.
If her temp is 98.. keep an eye on her, she should start having them sometime within the next 24 hours.
Answer to:
My dog is due to have puppies any day now. She leaked some clear fluid yesterday and today she had a little bit of yellow mucus coming out of her. How long before she should have her pups? Estimated?
Take her Temperature... It is MUCH easier to estimate labor from the temperature. Her temp will drop 12-24 hours before labor begins. Another way to tell if she is within 24 hours is if she refuses to eat. The yellow mucus that you are seeing is the mucus plug, it starts 1-3 days before labor (1-3 days is a much larger variation than 12-24 hours, that is why I suggest using temperature),...

My 14 month old pomeranian got humped all day by a 8 month old male pomeranian whos larger and the second day shes not eating or drinking anything. Is she pregnant or sick?
Was your female in heat?? She would have to be in heat in order to be pregnant. Is she spayed? A spayed female cannot become pregnant.
An 8 month old male in most breeds is deffinately capable of breeding (although no dog male or female should be bred this young.. there is no way that he or she could be FULLY health tested, or the temperment correctly judged so young).
Not eating...

Hi my sons staffy bitch is about 66 days now when should i think about seeing a vet as i was told they have the pups at 60/64 days by one and 60/67 by another getting worried as i am looking after her
Are you absolutely sure that she is pregnant?
66 Days today gives a Breeding date of June 11th, is that correct? Was that the ONLY date of breeding? If not what are the other dates of breeding? How many days into her heat was she?
A dog's sperm can live around 3-4 days inside the female so the actual date of conception might be off (thats why you have been told so many...

My dog just had puppies 2 weeks ago and one of boobs is hard and swollen, but milk is still coming out normal. Is it something serious?
This sounds like a very serious PROBLEM!! It sounds like mastitis which can KILL your female! It gets bad FAST, if you haven't already please take her to the vet, even if it isn't mastitis I would much rather waste a trip to the vet and find out it isn't mastitis than not take her and find out the hard way (loosing your female).
Trust me I have dealt with this stuff before, I...

Our dog pooped on the stairs after we kicked him out of our room. Usually he lets us know he wants out, and he's good about holding it. This time it was earlier than usual and we heard nothing from him until we came down. What could be causing this?
Well I am guessing that it was probably spite... especially if he only does it in situations like this. I have a female that will only go to the bathroom in the house if she gets mad; ie. I lock her in the bathroom, or I leave with 2 of my other dogs and leave her here (even though I have 4 so it isn't like she is alone).

Iv tried everything to get my 4 month old labrador to toilet outside and he still does it in the house, i could keep him out for 2hrs and the minute hes in the house he goes. When a take him back out to finish off he doesnt do it can anyone
I know how frustrating this can be! I have been there. Take treats with you and take him for a walk until he goes and then get real happy and tell him how good he is and give him a treat. Just the treats and getting really happy would work by itself I just don't know any other way to get him to go to potty, they cooperate better when you are out with them and they aren't thinking...
Answer to:
My dog mated with a female dog today, does that mean she's pregnant? they were locked together only once but for 10 minutes.
The length of time that they are tied doesn't matter, all that matters is that it happens at the right time in her cycle and the male has to have live sperm.. if the timing wasn't right or the sperm wasn't there then she wouldn't be pregnant, but if all the stars aligned then she would most likely be pregnant.
Answer to:
Is it okay to breed dogs from the same parents but a different litter?
Well yes they can breed, but they should not. A breeding like that takes a lot of research and health testing, is VERY expensive (because of the testing), only very experienced breeders should even think about attemping a breeding like this. A lot of people have created a lot of problems in our breeds by doing breedings like this when they don't know enough to do it correctly.
Answer to:
My vet doesn't seem to concerned about my dam, but I am a first time breeder. I am worried about her anyway. Is it normal for a dam to have postpartum discharge brown in color? Should I only be concerned with black or green discharge?
Yes the discharge is normal and will last up to 2 weeks.. I would only be concerned if her temperature was high (dogs naturally run higher than humans so take that into concideration) or if she was acting like something was wrong ie. yelping, or acting like it was painful to move, not eating, not drinking.

Answer to:
Does anyone have a general idea of the cost per puppy if my dog is pregnant? (shots, vet care, etc..)
It came out to be about $100 per pup my last litter, but it really depends on what type of food you feed, what breed (large breed or small), your particular vet and how much they charge for the shots, and the laws re: pet sales in your area (where I am it is required that each pet that is sold have a health certificate, and to get the Health cert. the pups have to have more than the normal...

My lab is very close to term (60) days or so. She is being very calm, to calm as this isn't like her. She is also discharging a small amount of clear mucus. Are these early signs of labor? She is only carring two puppies according to xrays
Take her temperature... it sounds like she might be close but temperature is a much better way to judge. if it is 98 (you are looking for 2+ degrees lower than her normal temp, so you might call the vet and ask them what is was last time you took her in) then she will be having them within 24 hours of when it dropped.

I would say go ahead and look online to see what you can find, just a couple of things that you should look for (or avoid):
Avoid websites such as puppy finder or similar "puppy ebay" type of sites.
Check out actual breeder websites (or kennel).
On these sites look for
AKC registration
Championed Breeding stock
Health Tested breeding stock

We just got a 9 week old labrador retriever. We've had many dogs before, but this one is different. She constantly pees. Is this something she will grow out of, or is it a medical problem?
Some puppies do have a problem with this, I think it has a lot to do with the breeding... I have had pups (from questoinable breeders) that havn't been able to be trained regardless of what I do until about a year old and even then they are prone to "accidents", on the other hand I have had registered pups from EXCELLENT parents that practically train themselves at 7 weeks and...

How often should a nursing bitch feed her 3 week old puppies? Mine is feeding hers about twice a day. they seem hungry but are very healthy and growing well.
3 weeks is when I have to start weaning my litters... Mom starts loosing interest, I start mine with raw ground beef (you could cook it if you wanted), but there are other options. You could use a canned puppy food, or soak a dry puppy food until it is the consistency of oatmeal... with either one I suggest mixing in a puppy milk replacer, both for the nutrients and they like it and are more...

Is it safe for a dog to eat the bone from a T-Bone steak?
Never give your dog ANY cooked bones.. I give my dogs Raw bones, but a t-bone is a little small (i guess it depends on the breed). If your dog is going to crunch right through it, I suggest raw with meat on it to help cover it, if you have like a little chi or something then you could give it without meat, just make sure your dog isn't taking bit chunks of it off at a time.

Is she even in Heat??? and if so is she in the right part of her heat? A female will only breed if she is in the right part of her heat, don't try to force a breeding anyother time, you would hurt her. If she is in the right part of her heat she will flag or stand for the male, if she is standing you can guide the male to assist but dont try to force anything.

I would say that the answer depends on the dog. But you won't hurt her by moving her. If she is a young mother she probably wont appreciate being moved after pups are born though until they are at least 4 weeks.

I would suggest getting her spayed, most small breeds are at a high risk of having problems with pups that are too big (I have been through it personally and it is HEART BREAKING, stuck pups, yelping mom, pups that cry all night and then die the next morning anyway...). Plus with her being smaller she could be at a higher risk.
It really isn't safe to breed a female before 2 years of...

Love them and show them that they can trust you and all humans, don't try to train them to do anything... they will naturally protect you and your family should anything ever happen. I am no expert on large dogs but I do know that you have got to be very careful with diet especially with large breed pups! You could get a crate and that would stop him from going all over your house, atleast until you can get him trained to use the pads.
In my opinion, pads are a horrible idea.. you are essentially teaching your dog that it is ok to go to the bathroom in the house, he just has to find the right spot. But if you are insistant on using them, the only way to train him to use them is to use them...

It's really difficult to tell for sure without taking her to the vet at this point.. the vet can do an ultrasound to tell, but you won't be able to feel them until at the earliest 6 weeks. The signs you are describing are seen in pregnancies, but are also seen in false pregnancies which are very common.

They say that you can't hear heartbeats with just a stethoscope until 6-7 weeks gestation. The other way you can try to tell is whether you can feel them yet or not. You can just barely feel them moving at 7 weeks, then they get really strong for about the last 10 days of pregnancy (you can see them moving through the skin without touching, in the last 10 days).

This is normal for male dogs to a certain extent.. A lot of it can mean an infection. Normally it is just a natural process that actually prevents infections by helping to clean out the inside of the sheath so that bacterial doesn't grow in there. In addition to what Gabby said, if you check her temp twice a day.. it will drop 2-3 degrees below what it normally is 24 hours before whelping begins. Can a "fixed" female dog get "un-fixed"?
No, it is not possible to do this, when they spay a female they take the uterus out. They obviously wouldn't save it so it is LONG gone. If she is spayed there must be a reason. Either she isn't breeding quality, she is retired (either for age or a medical reason). So even thinking about trying to do "un-fix" a female isn't a good idea.

If your dog has been panting and whining for 3 days something is WRONG!! she needs to go to the vet ASAP! normally they only do this for a MAX of 24 hours and they don't normally whine at all unless something is wrong (most likely a stuck pup). She may be, breeding and pregnancy is all about the wait game... day 13 is a pretty good day (assuming she started flagging on day 9 or 10 like most females do), the length of the "lock" has nothing to do with whether she will take or not, it all has to do with timing. Sperm lives for about 48-72 hours inside the female, the female's eggs are not ready the entire time that she...

Maltese matted in middle of april she has a temp that varys from 37.3 to 37.8 for the past 3 days always licking her vulva, sleeping then getting up and down, not eating much, digging & scratching at her bed how far is she from labour
Well I am willing to say not within the next 24 hours, her temp will drop to 98.x (or so) I did the conversion on 37.3 and 37.8 and that puts her at 99-100 average temperature, which is what I have found to be the normal temp. for dogs. 98 was comming out to be 36.x (aproximately). So once her temp drops labor should start within 24 hours.

She should be eating around 4X's her prepregnancy amount of food, and it is a good idea to switch her to puppy food, but extra of her normal food is OK too especially since changing her food now would most likely cause stomach issues. Just give her all the food she wants. If that doesn't help, then try soaking her food in water to break it down for her, that way she can digest it...

Glad she is OK!
Answer to:
My toy poodle is close to whelping and has started leaking a snotty looking substance from her vagina. What is this and is it normal
Yes it is normal, it has several purposes which include lubricating the birth canal. The best way to know when she is going into labor is to check her temperature 2 x's a day at the same time every day (ex: 12am and 12pm every day), once it drops about 2-3 degrees below her normal, she should have pups within 24 hours. Other ways to tell that she will be having pups soon is to watch her,...
Answer to:
Do jack russell puppies need their tails docked? If so when is appropriate to do so and is this actually necessary? Does it lower the value of the puppy?
Tails are docked no later than 3 days old, same with dewclaws. Jack Russells do have their tails docked but its not a full dock, I am not positive of the length but it is a half or so...
As for the "Value" of the pups. I believe they must have thier tails done if they are to be shown, so technically speaking you wouldn't have any show quality pups. Plus a lot of people...

My dog is due today and she (from what I can tell) lost her mucus plug. Her temp is 98.4, is that low enough for labor to start or do I keep waiting for it to drop below that? It has gone down 2 degrees in the last 3 days...
2-3 degrees below her normal is what you are looking for so.. sounds to me like you should be having some pups here soon, seeing how this question is 23 hours old, it wouldn't suprise me if you are whelping pups right now..
Good Luck and keep us posted!
Answer to:
Is your dog inbred if the mother and father have the same grandmother? Is it close enough to cause health risks or genetic deformations?
This would actually be considered Linebred, not inbred (at least in breeding terms).. as for causing health risks or genetic deformations, it depends on the health of the dogs that are being line bred. Even inbreeding doesn't create these problems, but it does concentrate all of the genes, both good and bad. Generally though the breeding you have described would be considered a very good...

I have a Yellow Lab that we bred. We have another week before we are expecting. I am not sure if she is in fact pregnent. Is there a possiblity that she could only ave 1 or 2 pups? Her nipples are enlarging but her abdomen hasn't gotte
It is possible, but you should be able to feel some pups by now, they should be quite active. You should start taking her temperature 2x's a day though if you think that she may be expecting because you will want to know when she is going in labor if she does have anything. Here is a temp chart http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/breeding/tempchart.htm
it will make your life alot easier if...

Who pulls more american bulldog or pit bull?
If you are talking about in weight pull... the only site that lists the dogs of all breeds by their weight class (meaning the dogs are listed by weight and then their breed is also stated) is the APA (http://www.weightpull.com/). From looking at the results from their pulls for this year I am seeing that Am Pit Bulls (the real ones, that weigh around 35 lbs.) are pulling up to 130x's...

Can my landlord keep all $400.00 of my pet deposit?
Take a look at your contract but Tempter is right, normally pet deposits are non refundable and therefore are more of a charge than a deposit. Why they won't refund it if there isn't any damage or pet odors, is beyond me..

(I know this is an old question but incase it helps anyone else...)
This happens in some females about 1-2 weeks before whelping (my female did it). So sounds like your 2 week estimate is just about right.. 99 temp might be normal for her at the time of day that you checked it. If you want to be sure your best bet is to check her temp 2x's a day at specific times, example: right when she...
Answer to:
I have a chihuahua and she mated on 03/24/2008, and we had no since of her deliving soon. how long should I waite to take her to the vet
Well your dog is at 63 days.. gestation can range from 58-68 days (some say as long as 74 days). Have you been taking her temperature 2X's a day? I would give her a few more days as long as she isn't acting like something is wrong and you aren't noticing any problems. Has she gone off her food? this can be one of the earliest signs of labor. Also did she only mate the one day?...
Answer to:
Why do dogs roll in dead things?
You must have a terrier...? I am guessing a Jack Russel, Rat Terrier, or may be a Fox Terrier? I know these type breeds do it because they are trying to cover their scent, it is natural instict to them.. they are hunting breeds. If you aren't dealing with a terrier then I am not sure why, but it still may have something to do with the history of the breed.

I have been told that to calm a dog down its good to let them have a litter of pups. Has anyone else heard this?
No I haven't heard of it but I can tell you from experience that this is absolutly not true, and I don't believe it for one second. My male has been studded out before and when one of my females goes in heat he still drives me nuts and whines the whole time, and acts like an a$$... so doesn't help the males. I have a female that was PERFECT, I mean this dog was 100% trained and...
Answer to:
How long will my poodle be in season and when will she accept a male for breeding
your female should accept a male for breeding starting at 9 days and should continue to accept him for about a week..
You honestly need to research breeding and whelping... if you have to ask this question you are not ready to breed your dog yet. Do you know the signs of labor, how to tell if there is a problem, what to do in the event of a problem (each problem has a different way that it...

I would say that you should just go out to your car and tell him to get in (then put him in there if you have to) and once he is in give LOTS of praise and a treat. Don't go anywhere yet, just get him used to getting in and out of the car.. spend about 10 min. a day just having him get in and out of the car using treats and praises. Then after a week or so maybe drive around the block,...

I have a 9 week old female chihuahua that is already showing signs of aggression. I've only had her 2 weeks and this problem started right away. She will growl and try to bite me and my children. What can I do to stop this before it gets worse?
To be honest if it has started this young it sounds like it is genetic, no puppy should be aggressive. Where did you get this puppy? Did you get to meet the parents, where they aggressive? Do your best but if it doesn't work out in the end understand that this may very well be a problem that runs deeper than you can control. This is what happens with pit bulls and is why they have a bad...

When we got our 4 yr.old German Shepherd spayed. She never came out of surgery. We are devastated. What could of been done to prevent it.I feel as though I killed my best friend. I thought it was in here best interest so she wouldnt have problems later.
I know the older that dogs get the harder surgery is on them. I would suggest that either you spay at a young age while their bodies can handle it or just don't spay her (of course there are potentialy fatal risks with not spaying too). Thats really all that could have been done on your part, other than that it is really on the vet and the veterinary staff. Did they do any blood tests...

Does anyone know of a homemade treatment/preventative for hot-spots? My poor dog gets them at least once a month and he's so miserable. Trips to the vet are just stressing him out beyond belief.
I have heard that a 50/50 mixture of Apple Cider Vinegar and water helps to clear up hot spots, its not expensive so its at least worth a try.

Answer to:
How will I know that my dog is in labor?
The first sign that most people notice is the non-stop panting and the nesting behaviour (digging in the blankets, or she might decide that she wants to use your closet and take a towel or something and start shredding it up in there... or where ever she deems is a good spot with whatever she decides feels would make a soft nest in that spot) At this point you would want to get her to the spot...

I would say you are fine, the milk leaking may actually get worse before she delivers, my female did it too. Her body is just getting ready, trust me she will need all that milk, pups nurse like crazy when they first come out, thats all they do for the first several hours...

What questions should i ask before buying an american bulldog, and how can i tell which ones are going to be the biggest AND BEST LOOKING
You need to make sure that the parents do not have hip dysplasia, I have seen quite a few ABs with HD lately, you also need to ask yourself if you have a high enough fence for one (these guys tend to be quite athletic despite thier size and can normally clear the average fence). In order to find out which will be the biggest you have to look for the biggest parents.. your best bet would be for...

I would say your best bet would actually be a combination of answers already provided.. Wash them with dawn dish soap (make sure you leave the soap on them for at least 5 min. and use as little water as possible until you are ready to rinse.) After the bath spray on a 50/50 mix of ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar) and water.. then go through with a flea comb. I would do the ACV and flea comb everyday...

My yorkie has four 2 week old pups. how soon after can she come into heat again and i have the male dog at home as well and dont want her getting pregnant so soon again?
I would say that she will be comming back into heat around the same time that she would have if she had not had a litter.. or it may be delayed by 2 months. So start looking for a heat at the normal time that she would have come into heat without having had the litter and just be prepared.

Are you friends with any of the people that got 1 of the pups? maybe you could take your female to go see them so she will know that they are deffinately not in your house. She will see the pup and maybe understand that "this is where my puppy is, and this isn't my house" so when you take her home she should get the idea.
If not then I would just let her deal with it, she...

Can a dog become pregnant if you get the two dogs separated once they are connected?
well if you pulled them apart you need to get your female to the vet ASAP! you could seriously injure HER and the male (but if I were you I wouldn't be giving 2 flying flips about any roving male, that the owner obviously wasn't watching!). But your girl needs to be checked... when the dogs "lock" 2 things happen. 1) the male becomes engorged (swells) 2) the females muscles...

I need a guard dog. A big scary looking dog who will attack if he needed to. Money is no object. Any ideas?
I would go for an American Bulldog (the standard type is my favorite) they are inherently very attatched to their owners and therefore will protect you.
Breeds such as Mastiffs, Dalmations, Chows, Dobermen, Rottweilers, and German shepards are all breeds that either are or at one time were used for protection purposes. I have also heard that Rhodesian Ridgebacks require an owner that has a...

A lab is big and strong and can be "difficult to control" if it isn't trained, are they gonna ban labs too? Maybe while they are at it they can ban EVERYTHING that is POTENTIALLY dangerous, I mean seriously what next... you better watch out, next thing you know they will be...

Try playing with her about an hour before bed then take her out to potty, pick up her food and water, wait an hour and take her out one last time for potty then put her in her crate and tell her good night, give her a big fluffy stuffed animal to curl up with. That is what I do with my pups and they LOVE the stuffed animal, especially when I throw it in the dryer for a few min right before I...

I know this is a little late but are you sure they are breeding, or are they just humping each other and you assume that means they are mating? in order for her to get pregnant she has to be in heat (or on her period). She is too young to breed and I suggest that you do some research before you do breed because if you are allowing them to mate with her being under a year, I would say that you...
Answer to:
I have a female pom that has given birth once already. she is in heat again and I think her daddy may have gotten her pregnant this time. The first time they were completely seperated. if she is prego, will the puppies be ok?
Yes your puppies will be fine, assuming that this is the first generation that inbreeding has happened (meaning that none of the dogs in the pedigree came from an inbreeding). And assuming that neither of your dogs have any health or physical or MENTAL issues (this type of breeding is used in a lot of Pit Bull breedings and for many generations and that is where unstable temperments pop up)....
Answer to:
I have a pure breed boxer and i think that she got pregnant by a mut. but i also had her mate with a pure breed boxer male. If she is pregnant by both will some of the puppies be pure breed boxers.
You will have to do DNA testing before you can register the pure bred Boxers, but yea it is deffinately a possibility.

Did you give your dog a bone to chew on that day or the day before this happened? If so Bone will do this, I raw feed my dogs and if I give them too much bone thier poo will literally be like a powder when they go. Make sure he/she has water! If it is from bone there is nothing really to worry about, I would just make sure that you don't give bones every day.

My dog had puppies about 5 weeks ago and i dont know the appropriate age to wean them off. her belly is red swollen and hotter than normal. could something be wrong?
yes, it sounds like something is wrong... if you haven't by now you need to take her to the vet. The pups are beyond ready to start weaning. The best way to get them started is to get some of the puppy milk replacer and make some of it and then soak some kibble in it until it is a consistency like oatmeal. Then over the next week or two just gradually soak it less and less untill they are...

He is no doubt in pain and if you are trying to touch him you may be hurting him, it is natural instict for a dog to try to stop you from hurting him. You shouldn't worry about the snapping, if he was trying to hurt you he would, just snapping is dogs language to let you know that he can't handle it. You might want to talk to the vet to see if you can get some pain meds for him so he...

Is it ok to smack a pit on the nose as a puppy to not be so aggressive, and is it ok to smack the bottom when potting on the rug? I guess what is the best way to raise a pit in a none agressive envorment?
I raise, train, and occaisonally breed pit bulls.. so I understand what you are dealing with. As far as the pottying goes, pits aren't any different than other dogs, they tend to be quite intelligent and learn rather quickly. The biggest problem with potty training has to do with how a lot of "breeders" "raise" their pups, they throw them outside in a kennel and hose...

I wouldn't bother with more heartworm prevention, if you look at some of the heartworm preventatives the active ingredient is ivermectin so giving more heartworm prevention would put you at risk for overdosing (don't freak though I have read studies that were saying that dogs could safely handle 1000x's the recommended dose, except collie breeds). But it seems to me that...

How many times should my dog mate while shes in heat to make sure she becomes pregnant? And what day of her being in heat should I mate her?
I breed my females at the most every 36-48 hours staring day 10 (1-2 days after she starts flagging) until she will no longer allow the male to mate her, usually ends up being about 3-4 times.

I agree with "DVM2010" just wanted to clarify something... "Dogs can become pregnant even in their very first heat, so be careful if this is NOT what your goal is"... Even if your goal is to breed NO DOG should EVER be bred on her first heat! For physical and mental reasons, it would be the equivalent of a 13-year old having a baby, possible but not a great idea.

At what age can bitches safely have their first litter?
SAFELY have a first litter after 2 years of age. By 2 her body will be ready to handle the tremedous stress of a litter (even a 2 year old ends up looking like a skeleton after giving birth), carrying a litter is very hard on female. If you breed before 2 her growth may be stunted and it could actually cause health problems.
The other issue conserns the mental preparedness of the bitch....

yes.. Mastitis is a very real concern, my dog got it and I was placing pups on her. I thought I was getting every nipple but apparently I wasn't, I felt bad because it was very painful for her. They do hit a stage of morning sickness in the early stages of pregnancy. In addition to adding an anti-itch (or if she already has cuts you might want to think about Neosporin) You should clean off her entire stomach (all of her nipples) at least once a day. It is a good idea to clean her off even if she isn't iritated because her pups will be putting their mouths on that area soon and you don't need them sucking on an area that hasn't at least been...

I would put them together once every otherday (the sperm lives for 48-72 hours) until she won't allow him to breed her anymore.. thats how I do it anyway. It sounds like you are dealing with dominance issues. I am thinking that the younger one is challenging the older one for dominance. The best solution is for YOU to assert dominance and establish that they are BOTH subordiant. There are different ways to establish that you are dominant and it ranges from making them obey you to taking them on walks to making them work together to please you....

I got a new puppy. I think they told me he was 5 weeks old, but I've been told he looks more like 8 weeks. He is a rottweiler, lab, german shepard mix. He REFUSES to do ANYTHING when I put a leash on him. What can I do? Also, any advice fora 1st dog owner
I start playing with them in the house (just sitting on the floor and wrestling or something, occaisonally getting up to run across the room) first with a collar on, after a while I add the leash and keep playing and I will grab the leash once in a while during play, especially during the run across the room. The next day or later the same day we play for a little inside with the leash and...
Answer to:
Should vasectomies be offered as an alternative to neutering?
Yes, I think it would be a great idea... so many people refuse to get their dog neutered because it is so permanent. Offering a vasectomy would be a great alternative and the dog wouldn't be able to run around and breed to just any female, it might help reduce the number of accidental breedings.
Answer to:
What is your opinion on docking and cropping?
I personnally CAN NOT stand floppy ears, looks too much like a mut! I work with pits though so that might have something to do with it.. I really hate it when people buy a beautiful pit pup and then don't get the ears done, they completely ruin the dog for LIFE if you don't get it done young then the ears will never stand correctly, in my opinion if you don't want to get ears...

Mine started licking up some puppy replacer milk at 3 weeks... I mixed in raw ground beef after 2 days and then for fun when they were 3.5 weeks I added a raw cicken quarter with slices in it so they could get through the skin. How Many Different Breeds Are There Of American Pitbulls?
The American Pit Bull Terrier is ONE BREED, the problem is there are many different BLOODLINES. That is why the AKC won't register them... No one knows what exactly is the true APBT. The reason is that instead of one person creating the breed like Poodles, a lot of different people were interested in creating an APBT and so the breed was never really able to become very specific so we have...

I have a pitbull and he did the nasty nasty with my friends female pitbull.... that same night my friend let out my other dog (saint bernard) and he also did the nasty nasty with the same female pit... wat will happen? my pit did it again 2 more times
Some of the puppies will be Pitbulls and some of them will be pitbull/ st. bernard mixed... You should get DNA testing done on all of the pups (even if it looks obvious, sometimes you'll be surprised at the results) so that you will know which ones are mixed and which ones are not. Other than that, I highly suggest that you watch your dogs closer, the last thing this country needs is more...

What breeds of dog are ilegal or on a special dangerous dogs list?
Usually are on lists: (I don't know why though... most of the dogs of these breeds that I meet are good, they can be bad, jsut depends on the owners... labs can be bad too)
Rottweilers, Dobermans, Pitbulls, Chows, and German shepards
Not on the lists but normally should be:
Chihuauas, and Labs (I am sure there are some I am forgetting.)

If you cross a Labrador and a Poodle you get a "Labradoodle". Which two breeds should NEVER be crossed? What would you name that new breed if they were?

I would name it "A Nightmare"

My mom insists on feeding my dog human food and overfeeding my dog with treats. I know this is unhealthy and I tried talking to her but she won't listen. Is there anything I can do about this?
Teach your dog "drop it".. even with food, or just walk up to the dog and take the food away from it. My mom and my grandmother tried to give my dog food for about the first year even though I would tell them not to, so I would tell my dog to drop it or I would go get the food from her and tell her "NO"... Now they ask me if she can have it and if I say no, they don't...

Is it normal for a dog that is pregnant to have a discharge she was mated 2 weeks ago?
My female did have a discharge early on, it was a little milky in color but had no odor. She had 8 very healthy pups.. My rule of thumb is if there is no odor your fine.
Answer to:
Is it normal if my dog eats his own poo?
Well... what does "normal" mean to you, are there other dogs that do it? Yes Should they do it? NO
Usually when a dog eats its own poo it is because the food you are giving it is either too hard for the dogs digestive system to break down (meaning there is a lot of stuff in it that the dog doesn't need).. or the dog is starving (either for nutrition or just for food)....

A breeder bought a puppy around to my house today for me to look at. The puppy was weak, and was in poor condition. She keeps texting and calling me asking if I want the dog. I feel so sorry for the dog, what should I do? Also the puppies to young to go!
Well this is obviously not a reputable breeder... If the puppy is UKC, AKC, or any other registered, then I like the advise that Redhawk gave as far as calling up the registry with name and address and taking the correct officials out there to investigate.

I have a pitbull that just has come into heat and has been bleeding about 8 days now. How many times does a dog have to latch on to her in order for her to become pregnant?
To answer the question: Just once, what matters is the TIMING.. if you don't catch the right day then it doesn't matter how many times she was bred, you could tie her 1,000 times (major exageration) and she wouldn't get pregnant. I think my 2yr old pom is pg is there any unusual symptoms they display in the first few weeks?
Some dogs get clingy, or may become more protective over "their area". But these may also be seen in a false pregnancy (mine shows them during false pregnancies).
About two weeks after breeding you might start to see a vaginal discharge; it should be odorless (some people say it should be clear but my female had pus colored, I say as long as there is no odor you are ok). This was...
Answer to:
I have a 7 pound female and she was bred to a 10-12 pound male...is this ok? Will she have problems during birth?
it is very possible for any dog to have problems during birth, especially the small dogs (or dogs with big heads like pugs, bull dogs, etc.). The only way to know is to go get an x-ray done when she is 48-54 (there is a wider window than that to get it done but this is when I like to do it), ask your vet when they like to do the x-rays. The vet should be able to tell if the pups are too big...

Would YOU pay extra for a puppy to be house broken before it came to you even if it meant the puppy might be a few months older? How much extra?
I actually already do this :) I buy puppies that are older (usually because they didn't sell or because the breeder thought they would keep it and then decide not to) they are usually 4-5 months and already house trained, leash trained, some basic obedience, etc. This is the only way I buy my dogs.. I can't stand to deal with the entire puppy stage, dealing with it from 4 or 5...

One of my new born puppies (the runt) seems very weak. I keep finding her seperated from the rest. I believe she will die soon. I am going to feed her puppy milk by bottle. Should I feed her and place her back or keep her seperate from the rest?
I personally would keep the pup away from the litter if it keeps getting pushed out because if it cant stay close to the litter it may (will) become chilled and then it will die. Every couple of hours I would take the rest of the litter out of the box and allow the pup to nurse from its mother, if you can leave a few pups from the litter in while the runt nurses and not have them pushing the...

How long do newborn puppies nurse? when are they ready for puppy food?
Go get a puppy milk replacer and soak the dry food in it to make a nice mushy food. You can offer them this mixture at 3.5 - 4 weeks and once they start licking it up SLOWLY give them a thiker (dryer) consistency and by 6 weeks they should be able to handle it without it being soaked in the milk. Oh... keep mom away from the pups for about 1-2 hours before you offer the food (when they are 3.5...

Your gonna have to get something for him to stand on and then your probably going to have to sit down and let the female stand over you (so that her front legs are on your left and her back legs are on your right, or the other way around) if she wont stand still... If you can get her to stand still then you can just stand behind the male and make sure he stays on whatever it is the you decided...
Answer to:
Do you think it's gross when your dog licks him/herself? Do you tell them to stop?
Yes I think it is gross and I used to tell my dog to stop, but I have learned that I shouldn't stop them for a few reasons.
1) Licking keeps them from getting urinary tract infections
2) If I tell my females not to then when they get pregnant and have puppies they may not clean themselves and their pups.
So what I do now is tell them to go in their crate or in the bathroom to do...

Sounds like you will be having puppies within the next 7 days... Start taking her temperature and when it drops about 2 degrees she should give birth within 24 hours (probably before, but 24 hours is max.) Make sure to make her up an area now and go put her in it and feed her around there and make sure it is in a place where she will stay in it... A lot of people say "put it in a dark...

Some Males will harm the puppies... and sometimes the female will kill her puppies if she thinks that they are in danger from the male, or she may attack your male.
I would suggest that you separate them just to be safe because once you find out how he and the Dam will react it could be too late. I wouldn't mess around with introducing the male and the pups until the pups start to...

It could be the heat.. Sometimes when it gets hot outside their appetite drops a little. If she is eating but just isn't eating as much as usual it is probably just the heat. But if you notice any attitude changes or she starts loosing weight then don't hesitate to get her to the vet. Also if she has any diarrhea or is vommiting or has a temp, I suggest taking her in to let the vet...

Your buying another dog; do you adopt from the pound or buy from the pet store? ( be honest! )
Neither... I would go to a reputable breeder, but I have a thing for purebreds... I am not such a big fan of the mixed breeds.
If I HAD to choose between the two though, I would NEVER go to a pet store, those puppies come from puppy mills and the poor parents are kept in terrible conditions. I would feel like I was supporting them if I bought a pet from a store.

Get a crate and put him/her in it when you are not home or are not watching him/her.
Then get some bones and when you are watching him/her and he/she goes for something he/she isn't supposed to correct him/her and give the bone and praise for chewing the bone... anytime he/she chews the bone, PRAISE!

My Chihuahua is pregnant and im not sure when she got prenant, How will I know when the time is close?
If you know when she went into heat, you could calculate it from that.
If you have the date of onset of heat:
First day of bleeding + 10-14 days = aprox. date of breeding
Aprox. date of breeding + 60 days = a really good estimated due date.
or if you want you could just post a comment with the date that she started bleeding and I can calculate an estimate.

I think this situation will be fine! It is excellent that you got your puppy so young, at least seeing how you have a small dog already. I may be too late in anwering this but every breeder has their own opinion on this. I personally allow the male to breed to the female everyother day for as long as she accepts him. At what stage can pregnancy in a dog be determined by X-ray? I live in Greece and the vets do not have scan facilities. My younger dog (pedigree Lab) had a short joining with a male brought by her breeder 57 days ago. The vet says she 'may be' pregnant.
X-rays can determine pregnancy at 45 days or after... so if she is at 57 days and nothing was seen, she most likely isn't. Sperm can live in the female for around 3 days so you could be 3 days off on the day, but that isn't enough to put her before 45 days if you calculated 57 from the time of breeding.

Both great answers, just wanted to add...
Your dog may see you as "Alfa" meaning the leader of the pack and your husband as just a pack member (or someone to play with). With wolves, no one messes with the Alfa, its not tolerated.. but the pack members are game. So maybe your pup is showing you that your dominant and she respects you.

From my experiences, you were told right. Especially with the small breed dogs. If you go with a larger male there is a very high chance that the pups will be too big for your female. Trust me you don't want the pups to be too big, you will end up having to pull them out if they get that far (which will hurt your female, but you would still have to do it) or she would have to have a...

Well if it was me I would treat him like his mother or his litter mates would have if he hurt them. Yelp and bite him, obviously you don't bite so you would yelp and smack him. Don't feel bad about it either... his mom would have done it but she would be alot rougher than that Also I am not telling you to yell and scream and slap him several times for one offense. Just when he nips...

What do you do if your dog has complications while she is giving birth, besides going to her veterinarian?
when I was younger we had a Jack Russel who was giving birth and she got as far as getting like a quarter of the pup out so we had to pull the pup out. We waited for a few min. first to see if she could do it herself but that was a bad idea on our part, by the time we got the pup out (a little girl) she had pretty significant brain damage... she didn't even know how to suck so we had to...

My dog is obsessed with the mail. If she gets to the mail she tears it up. We put a box below the mail slot to catch the mail but then she chewed through the box. Now all she does all day is sit in front of the mail slot waiting. What should I do?
I saw this on "It's me or the Dog" on Animal Planet...When she heads for the door to sit in front of it yell "no" or "ahh...at" she should turn around immediately. If she doesn't stop to your voice it's time to bring out the heavy stuff! Get two metal pot lids and bang them together in place of using your voice, but DO NOT look your dog in the eye,...

My 4month old dog has been throwing up yellow-green foam! i took him to the vet today they said he could hav parvo they checked him and it came out negative. He doesnt eat, or drink. Whats wrong? He used to be a playful pup and now he just lays and looks
I'm no medical expert but ususally that yellow-green foam is stomache bile... and if your pup is throwing it up, that is because he has an empty stomache. Now as to WHY he isn't eating...? Maybe you changed his food? I don't know...
Also did your vet check for cocidia? Intestinal worms? blockage in the intestines?
Good Luck whith this one sorry I can't help more, and I...

It is day 11 after my dog started, today i took her to the sire she would not allow him to mount, what should i do i think the sires master thinks he may be wasting his time, why wont she allow this what should i do will she ever allow it,have i done wrong
Your female may be a picky breeder and may need to know the dog that is mating her before he mates her, their not all hoes! LOL or she may not be ready until later in her heats, she may wait until day 14. I would keep taking her to the male but don't let him try long or she may start to see him as a bad thing, if she doesn't stand for him the first or second time he licks her then...

What is the best "potty training" technique, or secret. My puppy just doesn't "get it"
First-Get a crate! If you get one he/she can grow into make sure you have a divider, the idea is to make sure that if your pup goes to the bathroom in the crate he/she will have to be really close to it, or even it, if your pup is in it he/she will really hate it... your pup will learn very quickly that the bathroom in the crate is not good! This will help because everytime your pup goes to the...

Ihave 2 blue american pittbull terriers and one is ukc and the other is american dog breeders association i would like to know if i am able to breed them they are from diff. parents
YES... you can breed them and have them registered, The UKC accepts ADBA registered dogs as long as you have a pedigree so you will have to register the pups UKC.. you can just register the pups or you can register the ADBA parent with the UKC and then register the litter.
The ADBA sometimes accepts UKC registered dogs so while it would be more difficult you could do the same as above but with...

Has anybody ever helped a male dog mount the female? or help stimulate the male? If so how did you do it?
Just let him try to do his thing and then (this is the nasty part, think of it as a necessary job) just grab his "thing" and aim him at her, he should thrust himself. If he wont thrust this wont work, and I don't know how to make him thrust. If your having a problem with her being too tall try putting her front paws up on some steps, the first or second stair, it will lower her...

Im at the end of my tether, my labrador is wrecking my home because he wont stop chewing, im on the verge of giving him away, any advice to stop him chewing?
First... GET A CRATE! if you crate the dog when you are gone he can't possibly mess up your home, if he is that bad you should probably crate him at night too. If you feel bad about him being in a crate get one size up from his suggested weight and he will have plenty of room.
Second... buy LOTs of natural bones (NOT RAWHIDE) too much raw hide can block your dogs system and then...

Answer to:
Is it better to have the male dog come to the females house when you are going to breed?
When it comes to dogs.. the female should go to the male! Even when I tried to have AI done one time and the male had to go to the vet for collection, the male produced no sperm. If the male is not comfortable in his surroundings he may become temporarily infertile! The vet told me it is normal to have this problem with males and thus the reasoning behind female goes to male.
Answer to:
My dog is 4 yrs she has never been mated i would like to mate her now i have found a sire and they have met on a few occassions, however she has not allowed him to mount her her first bleed was 09/06/07 am i a little early to mate. when is right.
I am assuming you mean day 1 was June 9, 2007? the answer is she will only start standing for the male 9-10 days after she started and she will not stand afer 14 days. So... today! take her to him and if she freezes for him, then she is ready... let them mate probably 3 times, not more than once a day though, try 2 days in a row then 1 day break and then once more and you should be having pups...

What is your favorite dog breed?
American Pit Bull Terriers!! They are great. They're excellent dogs when trained right and I think they are really good with kids because they don't really feel it when Baby pulls a tail, ear or steps on the dog to climb on the couch. They're soooo lovable! I own 3 Dyme (10 month Blue brindle female), Bala (3.5 yr. white female), and Patron (2.5 yr Blue Brindle male)

Which breed of dog is the most populer right now?
I know I'm a little late to jump in on this, but if you ask me... it's the American Pit Bull Terrier. Think about it there isn't a day that goes by that you don't hear about them between the media trying to tell everyone how "mean" they are and the supporters who are constantly trying to show the good side of the breed.
