Answer to:
Can one make a checkmate after he has been checked? I ask because I was playing chess in my computer and I checked my opponent, later on the next move, it moved the queen to attack my king resulting in mate w/o putting his king to safety, is this legal?
If the computer is in check - then it has to move out of check.
This could involve moving its king or blocking the check with a piece.
Either of these two moves might cause you to be check mated. For example his king might be blocking one of his pieces from attacking your king - by moving his king out of the way - he then calls check - or maybe in this case check mate.
Also by blocknig the...
Answer to:
In the game of Chess, when their are only two kings left on the board is that a draw?
It is a draw - it is stalemate. Neither side can possibly win. (If clocks are being used - then a player can not lose on time if his opponent does not have sufficeint pieces to win - so running out of time in such a position results in a draw.)
A king and a bishop against a King is a draw
A king and a Night againt a King is a draw.
A King and a Rook against a King is not a draw - mate can...

Answer to:
In chess if someone moves there queen and calls check but has not removed their hand from their queen when they discover that moving there will put there queen at risk can they change their mind and move to another spot even though they called check
Until they take their hand off the piece the move is not "set". Therefore they can move the queen to a different square. Saying check is irrelevant. They do of course still have to move the queen - provided they can do a legal move with it.

Which boxer used to enter the ring to tina turner's 'simply the best'?
Chris Eubank - who was a wonderful showman. A great boxer that was probably too sensible to be a boxer - in that he avoided dangerous fights as much as possible. You can play online for free on many sites.
Yahoo.com, chessbase.com....
There are good games on consoles - e.g. the Nintendo ds which also has a chess tutor mode. Much better than buying a dedicated chess teaching system.
If you want to play peole for real - llok for a local chess club - most clubs will be happy to teach you how to play. I know we are desperate for members lol.

In normal chess - no - the rules of chess state that you can not move into check (if the only move you can make is to be in check then the game is a draw - stalemate).
They also state you have to get yourself immediately out of check if an opponent puts you in check. If you cant get out of it - i.e. you are in check and any move you do leaves you in a checked position - then you are check...

Theory: A government (either the UK or US) exaggerated the risk of a recession to distract from something else, and underistimated the effect that panic would have on the economy. Is this possible? I know nothing about economics so I'm just wondering
Seems extremely unlikely.
If you want to distract from some bad news - you dont do it with some bad news thats worse - it just compounds your unpopularity.
If something awful happens then you can try to hide your bad news in it - but manufacturing it is never going to be a good idea.

What is the probability of getting no sixes if you toss three dice.
For each dice it is 5/6. So to get none in 3 die then it is 5/6 * 5/6 * 5/6 = 125/216 = 57.9% of the time.
There are 216 combination.
1 of which is 6,6,6
15 of which are 2 sixes(661,662,663,664,665 - 3 times)
75 of which are just one 6
125 of which is no sixes
So 0 6's = 125/216
1 6 = 75/216
2 6's = 15/216
3 6's = 1/216
So its much better than 50:50...

What board game would you rather play: Scrabble, Monopoly, Life, Risk or Candyland.
Risk is my favourite game (I dont know Candyland).
However Risk is not played by so many people as Scrabble for example so it does depend on who is available. It also takes a lot longer (normally).
Monopoly is great cos it appeals to all ages. OK kids can play scrabble but unless they are super bright - it is not much fun playing with them.
So Riskm then Scrabble then Monopoly ... but I...

Why are so many chess masters Russian?
In Russia, Chess is held in much higher esteem than in the West. The top players are like pop stars. The communists encouraged chess as a way of showing that they were superior to the west.
The Spassky v's Fischer being viewed as East v's West. (Unfortunately for the US Fischer was a great chessplayer but held views that did not fit with US policy).

My moneys on you. You look younger and fitter and Im not that good at fighting. But warning - I would cheat, hit below the belt or do whatever to avoid getting hurt. This also means I am most likely to run away! (a wide yellow streak).
I have some big friends too. They would not take nicely to someone hurting me.

My 4 teens want to have Saturday night free to themselves even though it's the only night me and my hubby can go out,so i need them to babysit my baby quads. They have Friday night free to themselves and the only other time they babysit is for 2 hrs a week
I would be very surprised if all 4 teens want to go out together. Cant two help look afte the quads one week and the other two the next week and so on.
Or at the very list each pair does one weekend in month - giving you two Saturdays a month.
Leaving one teen with all 4 quads would be unfair.
PS 4 teens and a set of quads - good for you for having the energy to want to go out!

Well I can think of a few reasons why they are the same.
1) economies of scale - why have two differnt designs if not necessary. Especially when it comes to repairs etc.
2) I wonder where cross dressers go / transvestites and do they lift the seat if ....

Both should hold equal status - but there are a lot of bigots in the world. The Christian Fundamentalists want to ban the books etc. because of it... I don't think JK Rowling will lose too much sleep as she already has a lot more money than she needs and many Christian Fundamentalists didn't like the idea of wizards anyway.

The gorrilas.
I cant imagine that the badgers would figure out how to use the guns or work them with their paws but the gorillas would be able to kill the badgers just using their physical strength.

Quick answer is yes but less likely than penetrative sex.

How do you score a hand with 4 4's and a 7?
Im guessing this is cribbage (crib)
With all four fours you have 6 pairs and 6 sets of 15 so a total of 24 points:-
4C 4D for 2 (a pair)
4C 4H for 2 (a pair)
4C 4S for 2 (a pair)
4D 4H for 2 (a pair)
4D 4S for 2 (a pair)
4H 4S for 2 (a pair)
Then we can the 7 to each pair to make 6 lots of 15:-
4C + 4D + 7 = 15 for 2
4C + 4H + 7 = 15 for 2
4C + 4S + 7 = 15 for 2
4D + 4H +...

Its a rook.
When you move the king two squares towards the rook and the rook jumps over it - thst is called castling or to castle.
So Castle is a verb rather than a noun.
However a lot of peopel call it a castle an I have never heard someone correct someone else for doing so.

In Maths - whats the difference between "to 3 decimal places" and to "3 significant figures"?
Both are to do with rounding but one is more to do with after the decimal point and the other before.
Decimal places refers to the number of numbers after the decimal point. So rounding is done to that level.
E.g. 12345.6789 to 3 Decimal places would be 12345.679
Significant numbers is rounding but before the decimal place. So 12345.6789 to 3 significant numbers is 12300

I would not get to upset with him on this. Normally a man touching another womans breasts I think I would count as cheating but given the context - I think you should give him some slack.
The peer pressure would have been very great - and it would have been more "jocular" than sexual.
Can you imagine how his friends would ahve treated him if he had not touched them. Where one drawa...

Does anyone have any hard facts on the cost of wear & tear of shutting down PC's every night vs. leaving them on & using electricity?
I would recommend shutting down your computer if you are not using it. This not only saves electricity but is green - saves carbon... and saves you money.
Also for security - re hacking - see later.
I have owned a large number of PCs and by the time components start to fail, they are normally ready to be replaced. I have only needed to repair one so far.

Does anyone else think its a little outrageous that actors are paid so much when there are people out there risking their life working to save other peoples lives.
Its the difference between a job and a vocation.
Actors sports stars get paid according to how much money they can make for the film makers / clubs.
Certain stars can almost guarantee box office success. So companies will pay them an amount that still enables them to make a profit.
For many of us in normal jobs - it is still the same - just a lot less pay. The company pays you a rate at...

YES
Australia I think will start to act fast. THey are in a terrible drought and all the politicians seem to be getting the message.
The US - will probably take longer. Bush wont listen, but others will. However a lot of Americans still seem to need to be convinced. Even if the evidence seems over whelming to me.

Casual players dislike when their opponents force a draw near the end of a one-sided chess game. How do advanced or expert players feel about it?
Its part of the game and one of the easiest bits to learn to improve your game. E.g. A rook and pawn against a queen will be a draw provided the king is next to the pawn and the pawn protects the rook, preventing the opponents king getting near your own king. There are many more. The skill when you are down is trying to maneouver your opponents to let you get the draw.

A cat.
Both cats and dogs can be ill treated but overall cats are not treated badly as often. They are also held in great diety in some cultures. (Ancient Egypt - it was a capital offence to kill a cat...).
People dont expect much form cats (OK maybe catch the odd mouse) but dogs often have to work. Guard, help the blind / deaf, sniff out drugs, fight (terrible),...

Answer to:
Yesterday I encountered a chess position in which I did not know if a move was allowed. As you know, a king is not supposed to move into check. But what happens when the piece giving check is pinned itself, and therefore unable to really do anything?
It does not matter whether the piece is pinned or not. A king is not allowed to move into check, (or through a position where it would be checked if castling).
The easiest way to think of it is that the game is over once a king is killed. The fact that the other king could then be killed is irrelevant.
So you cant move a piece that is pinned out of a pin, but it can still be used to check or...

Small amounts of course have very little impact but if we aggregate them all up - its a bit like the reverse of govenrments printing extra money.

Basically the flank files flank the center files.
A file is a vertical column of eight squares.

But its not much fun.

Love may not cost. But the break up of love does. Both emotionally and in my case financially. Who do you think was / is the greatest football (soccer) manager of all time and why?
I agree with smart9426.
Brian Clough was an incredible manager. He managed many "small" clubs and made them great clubs. With Derby he acheioved great things but it was with Nottingham Forest that he wins the greatest admiration.
He took a team, that people like me from the south coast had ont heard of, up the divisions and on to win the European Cup - not just once but twice and...

But unnnatural causes I think will be beyond us.

Why can't we sit around a table and ask questions and have them answered. why here?
Some questions people would not be able to ask face to face. Questions of a sexual nature for example.
Some questions would cause such heated debate that there would likely be violence. We can argue on here, but no one can take a swing.
Some people around a table would tend to dominate the conversation, not letting others speak. Here it is how fast you cant type and lots of others can...

Why do people sing or hum "dumb, dumb^ de^ dumb^" when they anticipate the marriage of a friend or family member? (snarky question) :)
That is Mendelssohns wedding march which is played at nearly all weddings.
Queen Victoria made it popular when she married Prince Albert in 1858 (it was originally composed for Shakespeares A Midsummenr Nights Dream in 1842).
I dont know if its just me but it can sound very downbeat almost like a funeral march especially if you lower the tone.
Maybe thats just my negativity lol :)

Yes it is.
If we go back 30 years ago the Phillips curve would have implied no. Basically he looked at inflation and unemployment over a period of over 100 years and mapped them on to a graph and found that as inflation increased, unemployment decreased.
It was quite a stunning find and so economic policies changes in order to take into account this affect.

If you have been on the pill for two years then the probability of you getting pregnanat is very very small. (Well under 1%), even if he did come unside you.
However, if you have been sick (as in vomitting) in the last month whilst taking it- that would increase the risk. Basically you could have sicked it up before it was absorbed.

One testicle should do. Six months is not long to wait. I know that doesnt help.

Do you think that religion does more harm than good?
I think it does do more harm than good. That doesnt mean it is all bad.
Anything that teaches, I am right and if you do not agree with me then you are evil - is itself evil in my opinion.
Basically, most religious people believe that they follow the one true God and everyone elses relgion is false. This means no matter which one we choose as right - the majority of people are following a...

I would like to think I play it very well. But there are always people better than me. I play for my Town and we are in the top league.
But I am assuming that is not what you meant. If you are asking how do you learn chess, then my recommendation would be to start from the end then go to the beginning and let the middle figure itself out.
Why start at the end? Well you need to learn how...

I think anyione who has wathced his program will be saddened by his death. He did get a lot of criticism for some for being the star of the show rather than the animals themselves, but for epople like me it made the program so much more entertaining.
He was a larger than life figure and will be very much missed not just by his family but his friends worldwide.

Would the world be a better or worse place if the internet was never created
The internet has many problems. Perverts praying on young children. Cybercrime etc.
However, these disadvantages are nothing compared to being able to talk online to your family 1000s of miles away with video. Or for being able to play games against people all over the world. Or finding answers to questions in answerbag.
Or sending information really quickly, rather than having ot wait for...

The Brontosaurus. Just imagine how much meat you would get from one of those. I almost put how much milk until I remembered that they were not mammals.
They also look so friendly compared to most of the other dinosaurs. They dont fit the "terrifying lizard" title which is what dinosaur means I think.

Who is the most overrated writer ever?
Probably Shakespear.
The complete works of Shakespeare is probably the greatest book ever written (if we exclude religious books to avoid arguments).

Not because the stories attributed to him are not fantastic. Just becuase, there is a lot of doubt as to whether they are all originally written by him.

I once heard that "Pro Life" people should be called "Pro Birth", because all the care about is the delivery of the baby. Once they are born, they don't give a s**t about the newborn baby. I agree with that...Any Opinions?
Im actually pro-choice. However, I dont agree with your presumption. Most pro-lifers Im sure are worried about the child after the birth. Some groups spend a lot of time, money and effort tryign to find new homes for women who do not want their child but are persuaded not to have an abortion.
So although I believe in choice - I think you are being very hard on pro-lifers.

Technology advances in jumps. If you look at your computer screen, we went from monochrome (orange, green or black and white) to 8 then 16 colours.
Each step has normally been a doubling or a multiple to the power of 2.

Which remade movie is better than the original?
Best example : - Silence of the Lambs - was way better than Manhunter (although Manhunter was still good).
Lord of the Rings.

How many times does your heart beat a year?
None - Im dead. Well I feel like it with this cold.
But when I was alive - then the average number of heart beats is 72
So 365 * 24 * 60 * 72 = 39,420,000
So 40 million is a simple round number.
Very fit people have lower heart rates. It also slows down as we get older. So babies hearts beat faster than old people...

I often speed. However if I get caught - I accept it. I only speed on motorways (not that that is any good excuse).
29mph in a 20 zone sounds dangerous to me. Of course it does depend on the time of day.
But your attempted excuses are not going to make any difference.

Favourite scene - pass. I lvoe the series but not one of my all time favourites.Frank is my favourite character. He does and says some of the things I would like to do or say sometimes. At the same time I am horrified at him.
His relationship with Marie is the best part of the program.

Why don't more people take advantage of the "five minutes" of grace and correct their crazy questions so they at least make some sense?
I bet most people do. I am horrified when I look at what I have typed and normally fix it straight away but always after I have posted - I never preview. Thats because I hate even more spending ages writing an answer - only to find by the time I have posted it - someone else has posted the same thing. It looks then like one of us have copied the other.
So I like to post quick and fix afterwards.

Answer to:
How would I write this formula to get the total price with tax?
A1=5.00 (price)
A2=3 (quantity)
A3=total with 6% tax
Depends on whether the price includes the tax or not.
So first - includes - so we need to calculate price without tax.
(A1 * A2) / ( 1 + T ) = A3
Where A1 = 5
A2 = 3
T= 0.06 tax
So 15 / (1 + 0.06) =A3
15 / 1.06 = A3
So the price excluding tax is 14.151 to 3 decimal places.
NOW assume Price EXCLUDES TAX
Then (A1 * A2) * (1 + T) = A3
So 15 * 1.06 = A3
So A3 = 15.9

If you have one of the newer wide screen tv''s do you need a camera that records in wide screen format in order for the picture to take up the whole screen? What if you have some tv's and computer that are not widescreen? would W.screenpictures look funny
Most wide screen TVs can expand the picture (making you look fatter) when sent a 4:3 picture.
Or they can zoom in so you lose the top and bottom on the screen but the screen is full.
Sometimes you cna choose a little imbetween the two.
So you can be a little more careful whne visoing - taking into account a little will disappear off the top and bottom if you are really worried about it.

However, I know where you afre coming from becuase many are easy to type straight in t ogoogle for example and get an answer.
THe internet is great for finding facts (not so good for opinions). A lot of the time I think people are trying to find what people think rather than the true answer.

Answer to:
What makes a good game? (your opinion)
The best games combine luck and skill.
You want your chances to improve as you get better at playing the game, but also need enough luck to make the result not easily predictable.
Each game should be different (the luck implies a certain amount of randomness).
Chess is a game of skill - but even that has some luck involved in it. Does your opponent know this particular openning? Do you...

Is it wrong to take the life of a very sick or old pet?
The other side of the coin - is it is wrong to let an animal suffer.
When an animal is in great pain, with no possiblity of improvement leading to no quality of life, then it is cruel to let its suffering continue.
Of course the extention to that is - Is it wrong to let humans suffer?.... That is a much more difficult question as so many other factors come in to play, but I will leave my...

My kids are always mis-quoting common phrases like saying "A Fragment of my Imagination" instead of a figment of my imagination. What is the funniest mis-quote you have heard?
Not really a misquote - more a badly thoguht out set of words.
We had a boss whose name was Stepford, but a colleague kept spelling it Stefford.
One day they were arguing and the boss said "Oh and by the way there is only one f in Stepford".
(one f'in)
My colleagues response "Believe me we know - there could never be two of you"

In the James Bond movies... Bond's boss has teh title of "M". WHat does M stand for?
Good question - difficult to get a good answer Im afraid.
Depends on which books you read.
The head is Barbara Mawdley in some books.
Sir Miles Meservy in others.
In the latest Bond film Casino Royal - Bond alludes to it being a strange name.
Ian Fleming did base his characters on real life people. Hence the Mansfield Smith-Cumming reference in other answers.

Lots.

For most networks in the UK, if you dial your voicemail number, it will start to play your voicemails.
If you have none or if you do then wait until you get to the end, it will then give you a menu. One of those options will be to change your voicemail settings / change you voicemail message.

Could a black hole be better described as a "black sphere"?
No, not better.
It may be more like a sphere on the inside but the colour is unknown.
The reason why we call it a black hole is because gravity is so strong than light can not escape from it.
So I think hole describes it better than sphere.

Digital billboards, are they an unnecessary distraction to motorists?
If they contain a lot of writing that motorists are likely to read then maybe. If they keep changing so the observer has to wait a few seconds to see the advert they had started to read and were interested in reading then they could be bad. You darw not look away in case you miss it again...
However, in most cases billboards are not a distraction and digital ones are ok if they are sensible....

What age do you think is a good age for a female to have children healthily?
As a woman gets older the risks increase with child birth. Both for the woman and the child.
So the best age is probably about 18.
However that is young to start a life of commitment and having a baby is not just for Xmas!.
At 18, we are not normally financially self sufficient enough to start a family etc.
In then end when suits the woman is the best answer.

Cheating is only cheating when your partner does not know about it and would not approve.
If you are both involved then you are swinging.

Yes but not always.
People that are very beautiful tend to be treated by other people differently which has a knock on affect to their behaviour. They are more used to getting their own way. People will be naturally drawn to them... so they can be a little more selfish...

Answer to:
What is the easiest way of testing if a number is prime or not?
Apart from looking it up on a website.
The simplest way to check is to see if it is divisible by any of the prime numbers up to its square root.
So for 401 for example, you need to test it with 2,3,5,7,11,13,17,19
So it is therefore a prime.
Obviously it helps if you know the prime numbers up to its sqaure root.

Do you really really really want to correct people's grammar and spelling on here but fear you will look like the epitome of a pedant?
I think there are more important things in life than worrying about grammar. I know some people do find it very irritating. I rememember being on a document writing course and one guy saying how it is important to know the difference between using a : and a ;. The rest of us just looked at him as if he was mad.
Having said that, poor grammar does make some one look a little bit less well...

Why does anyone consider post-marital sex to be better than pre-marital sex with contraception?
A lot of forms of contraception dont affect sex - pill, coil etc.
So I assume you mean something like condoms.
I always find that putting a condom on breaks the mood a little so I prefer not having to wear one.
So that would be a plus in to post marital in your question. (Not that most of us dont still use contraception after we get married).
Next part is post marital sex better than...

Is Jesus , God? If so, any proof?
Im an atheist but I am not anti.....
I doubt if many Christians will say there is proof. The Bible does state that Jesus the son and God the father (and the Holy Ghost) are in fact just one.
As with a lot of religions - it is more about faith than proof. They decide that the Bible is true based on their observations of the world and their interpretation of the Bible and the well being that...

Suns Studio 11 is now free. It not only is for C++ but C and fortran. It is very good.
That was the good news.
It only works for Solaris (best OS there is) and linux - on x86 and x64 and in the case of Solaris - Sparc as well. The bad news is you probably want it for windows, which it does not run on.

What happens when the piece you want to move rests on two squares
If it was a proper match, then both players are meant to record their moves. The clocks would be stopped and the adjudicator called over. He would then be able to use the recorded moves to see wher ethe piece should be. The person whos fault it was on the incorrect square would then normally have a time penalty imposed. This oculd either be time off of their clock or time added to their...

Which do you like more: rook or a bishop in chess?
In most books the rook is rated as worth 5 ponits and the bishop as only 3.
The rook becomes a lot more important towards the end game.
A rook in an open file can be used to stop your opponents King from moving across the board. A bishop cant do this on its own.
A rook is not limited to only half the board. (unlike a bishop which if it starts on a black square can never move off of that...

What are the principles behind card-counting?
Card Counting at the Blackjack table can give you a mathematical gambling advantage of 2% over the casino. Basically by using the information of what cards have gone before you can improve your chances of winning hands.
Basically, you keep a relative score of high cards v's lower cards. So in the simplest form +1 for a 10, J Q or K, and -1 for 2 3 4 5 or 6

First why do you think gravity is a weak force? The planets revolve around the sun due to gravity. Any force pulling a planet like Jupiter in orbit - doesnt sound weak to me.
If something was being leaked to aonther universe, then either it would be dissipating in our own universe - so we would end up with less and less of it would have to be being...

What is the standard time constraint for an official chess game?
I have entered lots of tournaments and the time always seems ot vary a little.
In my current league, we have to play 36 moves in the first 75 minutes. After the 36th move for black, an extra 15 minutes is added to the clocks. All moves then have to be completed before the time runs out. This is much better than having to go to arbitration....
This is the rules for our league, but it does seem...

It would have to have network connectivity to the earth of course -so I could use it to dial home and download new games. Not much ponit in playing games on the web as the response times would make it impossible - unless its something like chess.

When you are in the last seat before the bank, is it usual to consider the other players' winning options?
No matter how badly the other players play - it does not affect how the dealer plays. The dealer has to stick on 17 or above and hit if below.
So what others do does not affect the dealers play.
If you are the last player then you have the advantage of seeing the other players cards be played. so if for example there were 3 other players and they all split aces.

The Bible is stories handed down for generations.
I think we can assume that this particular story got exagerated a little. A man of 6'9" that long ago would have been a collosus. People were much shorter just 200 years ago let alone > 2000 years ago.
As the stroy got retold by word of mouth before it finally got written down, Goliath would have grown and grown!

No the passport does not.
However, the US does keep records on UK criminal convictions. Whereas most convictions expire after a few years in the UK, e.g. you would not have to declare them when going for a job etc., they do not expire as far as the Visa Waiver program is concerned.

The rook (castle).
In most books, they will say that a Knight or Bishop is worth 3 points and a rook is worth 5.

A simple advantage is that it can be put on an open file or row and prevent the oponents king from moving into that file and therefore across the board.

Answer to:
If u get more than one pawn on your opponents side what happens? do you only get one queen back? or do u get a rook for the second pawn
You can swap it for a Night, Bishop, Rook or Queen. This does cause an issue as there is by default only one queen for each side in a chess set.
If you have captured a rook, then an upside down rook is normally treated as a queen. Sometimes people put the pawn on top of the upside down rook. In theory to avoid this issue, every chess set would need 10 Knights, 10 Bishops, 10 Rooks and 9 Queens...
Answer to:
In chess, can kings move twice on the first move?
As mentioned by others castling involves moving the king two squares towards the rook and the rook then jumps over it.
There are several caveats. You cant castle is you are in check. You cant castle through check. You cant castle if the king has moved or if the rook you want to castel with has moved. You cant castel if their is a piece in the way (e.g. Night on queens side).
By the first move...

How do blind players play chess on a chessboard?
Well answered by idoun1. Some additional bits:-
Blind people also have special clocks - where they can feel how much time is left. The clock is normally sat between the two boards... see later. (No glass)... The clock faces away from them - so they can put their hand over the top and feel the time... So as a non blind person - I cna see the times normally.

Answer to:
Is it possible in a game of chess for both White and Black to have 9 queens each on the board?
It is possible.
Note each side can only perform a maximum
of 6 captures. (The rooks, the knights and the bishops). If you take a pawn or a queen then
you will have less than 9 queens. You cant take
a king of course. Each side will need to do a minimum of 4 captures - so we can do it...
If we just think of the "a" and "b" columns for a minute. If white moves his pawn...

Is there a specific strategy for the game of Risk?
It depends a little on the number of players.
Australasia is the easiest continent to take or keep as you only have to defend it from one point (either Siam - just above it or Indonesia - furthest North point in it) and also becuase it takes a long time for someone to take Asia (as its so big) and build up a big forces to attack you.
I like Australasia when there are more than 4 players....

What are the major differences between Visual Basic .NET or C# and JAVA?
Java and .Net are very similar. However the most significant difference is that .Net is proprietary in that it only runs on Windows platforms (invented by Microsoft). Java was invented by Sun Microsystems and is now Open Source. It was designed to run on any computer - not just windows machines. So not only will Java apps run on Window machines, but unix servers, mainframes etc. Nearly all...

Which planet was the first to be discovered?
The first planet to be discovered was our own - earth.
However - I assume you want to ignore that one.
I would guess that Venus was the next one as it is clearly visible with the naked eye (it appears like the "first star" in the sky - of course it is a planet not a star).

I turned my grill on and a flame came out and burnt all my eyelashes off my face. Will they grow back, and if so how long will it take?
I had a friend who blew off his eyelashes - but they soon grew back - but it did look wierd.
My wife is one of thsoe women that spends ages plucking her eyebrows and then drawing them back with an eye-liner - so you could always try eye-liner until they grow back.
Answer to:
If someone were to fire a gun at you and you dove into water would you be safe?
Safe - No
But a few things that help.
1) Light will be defracted - so if the shooter aims directly at you under the water as he sees you - then unless he is directly above you - he is likely to miss becuase the light will be defracted. You will not be where he sees you. (Science class - take a straight ruler and place it at an angle into a bowl of water - it looks like the ruler is bent).

I lost my virginity a few days ago, and I have been on birth control for nine years almost. The guy I had sex with didnt use a condom, but pulled out. I also forgot to take my pill four days in a row. Is there a good chance I could be pregnant?
A good chance - NO
A chance yes. Basically as you didnt take your pill correctly, you are relying on a) him withdrawing in time (he may still have ejaculated a little before he pulled out) and b) how fertile you both are. (Being on the pill for 9 years could ahve decreased your fertility. Also the older you are - less fertile but Im guessing yuo are under 30 - which is still very fertile.

Besides Concorde, what other supersonic airliners exist, or used to exist?
The Russians built a Supersonic plane that was bigger than Concorde - often called Concordski (I beleive they may have stolen the plans for Concord - they look very similar and it was during the height of the cold war). Its proper name was the Tupolev Tu-144 and it made its maiden flight in 1968.
Unfortunately it crashed at the Paris air show in 1973 - which lead to it quickly being scrapped....

What is the purpose of a ping?
The previous answer is correct. Putting it less technically, a ping is a message sent out from one computer to another. The other computer then sends an acknowlegement back - a bit like ping pong.
If we dont get a response back then either the other computer is not up and running or there is a problem with the connections between the two computers.

Is honesty always the best policy?
Overall honest is the best policy in most cases.
But little white lies are probably also important.

If someone is about to kill me but grants me a last request, what are some things I could ask for that would result in my escaping the situation?
Not a serious answer, but focusing on time,
If you have a chess board near by, then ask them for 1 billionth of a second extra to live for the first chess board square, then double for the second square - so 2 billionths of a second, double that for the 3rd, 4 billionths of a second, and so on. By the time you reach the 30th square you will be adding a second to your life.

What is the difference between an internal IP and an external IP?
Carsomyr gives an excellent answer.
However in simpler terms:-
An external address is like a telephone number that anyone can phone.
It has to be unique (and should be allocated to you).
(Imagine if two people had the same phone number for completely different houses - who would get the call - similar problem would occur with computers with the same external number).
Using that IP address...

Can I run Solaris 10 and Windows XP on the same computer?
You do not need two hard disks. You can install both on the same disk but first you must partition the disk (using something like partition magic).
Once you have installed both Windows and Solaris you will then be able to switch the computer on and choose which OS you want to run.
If you want to run both at the same time (i.e. switch between Windows and Solaris without rebooting), then you...

What is the fastest possible checkmate in chess?
The fastest checkmate in chess is fools mate - two moves as said above.
(Four moves if you count each moves for white and each moves for black as
separate moves).
White has to move the two pawns immediately to the right of the king for his first two moves from his point of view (left from blacks point of view)
Black moves his kings pawn forward.
Blacks second move is the queen moving...

A quick answer that will help in some cases but not all (it really depends upon the application and the operating system):-
1) Check the floppy disk is not write-protected (you should not see a hole in the place where there is a little sliding thing - very technical - lol).
2) Or it may have been saved as read-only.
One possible simple way around both of these (but it does depend on...

Unfortuanely he never got married and never had children. So that makes the answer a bit short.
He did like women - and many liked him - a nice quote from him:-

Answer to:
How can I improve my ELO rating in chess?
Your ELO rating will improve if you win a match and decrease if you lose.
The amount it increases or decreases depends on how high your current rating is compared to your opponent.
If you beat someone who has a rating much higher than you, then your rating will increase much more than if you had played a much poorer player.
Similarly if you draw.

In the dealers seat. That way you go home with you pay cheque and hopefully some tips and wont have lost any money.

As Bucky rightly said "There is no correct answer to this".
Apart form the results differing form application to application - some apps and some O/S will only run on some computers.
For example HP-UX will only run on computers with PA-RISC cpus and maybe a few rare others, whereas Solaris will run on Sparc, Intel and AMD.

If a strange dog is running toward you, should you run or stand your ground?
If you run - then the dog is likely to run after you. Police dogs etc are trained to attack people when they are running away. They can also be trained to attack you when you stay still.
Dogs can also be very brave - so the fact you are probably bigger than the dog is unlikely to act as a deterrent.
I would recommend standing still - with your arms lowered - but ready to move up fast. A dog...

If you were in a falling elevator and wanted to minimize the impact of the crash landing, would jumping inside the elevator just before impact help you?
It all depends how fast the elevator is going and how well you can jump.
If you were on a train doing 100 mph and you ran from the front to the back as fast as you could run - and jumped off - you would almost certainly die (becuase the 30mph you might reach would only decrease your overall momentum down to 70mph.
It would be similar for the lift falling, as it drops it accelerates, and just...

What is a terabyte?
The answer depends on whether you are asking a computer salesman or a storage administrator.
A storage administrator would normally use the number previously given - 1,099,511,627,776 bytes.
However most disks are advertised in sales speak.
So 1TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes - or about 10% less.
A lot of people talk using these rounded numbers
Once you format a disk, even less becomes...

Does ice weigh more than water?
Quirkies answer is absolutely correct - but a simple way of answering this is by observation.
If you drop an ice cube into a glass of water, it will float at the top, rather than drop to the bottom of the glass. If the ice cube was heavier, than the water, then gravity would cause it to sink. Similarly a frozen pond may not be frozen all the way down - it may be on top of water.

How many en passant movements are allowed in a chess game?
8. One player has to move a pawn forward until it is place to be able to take en-passant. Opponent moves pawn forward two - it is taken en-passant -those two pawns are now out of the equation. One has been taken and one has advanced to far now to perform another en pasant - so 1 en passant done.
This process could be repeated another 7 times (8 pawns each), so therefore the maximum would be 8...

Is Solaris open-source - well right now - No.
Will it become open source - almost definately.

So it looks like Solaris soon will be open source

Is it true that a bigger fighter has a more powerful punch?
I'm no expert but ...
Well some small boxers have a great punch - but if we think of it in terms of physics. :-
Force = Mass x Acceleration.
So a bigger fighter is likely to be able to put more weight (mass) behind the punch.
A bigger fighter is likely to have longer limbs, so this is likely to increase the acceleration.
Note although smaller fighters seem to punch much faster, this...

It is one of the most secure operating systems you can load on...

Apple computers seem to have much slower processors than PCs in terms of megahertz. Does that mean they're slower?
This is going to get a lot more interesting in future when you will increasingly see slower processors being able to do much more work than faster processors.
Basically performance is not just dependant on how fast (MHz) your CPU goes at but also how efficiently the transistors on it are used. Technology like Instruction Level Parallelism has been used in the past to improve performance...
