I have 2 kids with my wife, married for 8 years. She's been my long time girlfriend and all in all we've been together for 16 years. I never loved her and we both know it. Is it a sin against God to love love someone else?
I don't know what God views as a sin, and I don't think it's relevant to your responsibility.
If you never loved her, WHY did you stay with her 16 years? If you were going to break up you should have done so long ago. If inertia has been this powerful during your young years, I don't see you doing anything decisive at this phase, especially since you made a promise to...

Why do Airline's and their staffs treat the flying public like scum? Do they really want to chase us all away and with us, their jobs?
I don't think they DO that. They generally preserve their equanimity while working under a tremendous amount of pressure, and airlines looking for things to cut often intensify that pressure by making fewer people do more work. Also, airline staff are the "face" of the airline - the public sees only them - flight attendants, gate people, etc., and they are the ones who have to...

What's the difference between a portmanteau and a contraction?
Contractions are combinations of two words, usually a noun and verb or pronoun and verb, that drop out one or a few sounds and replace them with an apostrophe. They're formed on a fairly regular pattern, although there are exceptions.
Portmanteaux ("portmanteau" was a word created by Lewis Carroll in "Alice") are words that are smushed together according to no...

Yes. I do most things myself. If I'm doing something, I know how I want it done; I don't like giving directions to people and I'm not good at doing that. That means I don't ask for help much. BUT I am very lucky in that I have lovely family members who see when I need help, and they help me even if I don't ask.

I think he HAS led an admirable life. Does one lapse finish a person for good? I don't think so. He's a human being, and perfection is not of this world. All his other strong points remain: Modesty, dedication, hard work, kindness to others, and so on. Leave this to him and his wife to work out.

Friend of mine got expelled from her graduate program yesterday both due to the amount of stress and part laziness. I want what's best for her while I still think it's good for her to fight for staying at the program. How should I approach this to her?
It sounds as though the program wasn't right for her. I'd leave the matter alone. It takes motivation to earn an advanced degree and hers wasn't sufficient. Consider: Not everyone gets admitted to a graduate program, and if she was not cutting it, then her space in the program needs to go to someone who wants it more and will do the work, and meanwhile she might find a path that...

What's the junkiest car you've ever owned?
A Volkswagen Rabbit. It had been a demo at a dealership, and although the mileage was low, it had been abused. We had nothing but trouble with it. Once it stalled in the middle of a busy intersection. And when the weather got hot (we lived in Phoenix then) the interior reeked of hot plastic. Hated, hated that car. Got rid of it as soon as I could afford to.

Of course. But let's distinguish between guilt and regret. The law might not assign guilt to this act, but the killer (me) would still have taken a human life. To have to kill, even in self-defense, would certainly be a life-changing act for the person who does it.

I think older people have figured out how to get control of more things that could annoy them, both internally and in terms of actual control. They've figured out that life and happiness are right now...

If you had to teach us here something, what would you teach?
That most of us make the best decisions we can, given the information we have at the time of the decision. Sometimes we screw up, and sometimes we get better information later and wish we'd decided differently. BUT if we honestly decided according to our best lights and later find out we were wrong, we forgive ourselves and don't beat ourselves up. A LOT of people torment themselves...

Being a catholic, i disagree with what Halloween as it is a mockery of what it used to be, a day to remember those no longer with us. It makes me angry with "Trick or Treaters". When and why did the current Halloween tradition become popular?
October 31 is all-hallows-eve, not THE day when we remember those no longer with us. It has traditionally been a night when scary spirits are out and about.
November 1 is All Saints' Day; November 2 is All Souls' Day. Both those days are linked to remembrance of loved ones, not October 31.

Is it rude to answer a question with another question?
It can be, but it isn't, necessarily.
Sometimes a question is unclear and you ask a question to get the person to clarify it.
Sometimes the question is intrusive or impertinent, and you ask a question such as "Whyever would you ask a thing like that?" (which is much less rude than saying "Go to hell.")
Sometimes a question leads naturally to another question...

Have you tried Pepcid for the gastric reflux? It's over-the-counter now, and most drugstores offer their own generic version of it, which is much cheaper.
People with gastric reflux disorder generally take Pepcid (or its generic) once in the morning and once at night.
It might let you eat some of the higher fat-content foods without the reflux problem.
Good luck!

I might speculate about causality.

A hard freeze is unlikely, although a couple of winters ago we had one that killed some tender plants - a young hibiscus and a couple of jade plants....

Entertainment. Ours do funny and interesting things. One of them fetches - not to any command, of course - just when he feels like it. They talk. They reduce stress. Is this an extended metaphor? I too spend my days grazing. feasting on every green moment till darkness calls, and with the others I walk away into the night, swinging the little tin bell of my name.
Well, yes, it's an extended metaphor. It starts out well but you don't do yourself any favors by so emphatically "becoming" a sheep. Perhaps instead you could re-savor the sweetness of the grass- and clover-flavored images of the day, or something like that. Also: Why "walk away into the night"? Grazing herd animals generally walk HOME at day's end.

I am searching for two different words. Here are the meanings:
When a person accuses YOU of doing whatever it is that THEY are really doing themselves
When a person diverts attention away from the real issue by shifting the focus on something else
I'd go with projection, for the first one.
For the second, some people use equivocation - they shift the meaning of a word and pretend that what they want to talk about is what you said, only they define it differently so that things work in their favor.

Answer to:
What do you think this quote means? "In practice, such trifles as contradictions in principle are easily set aside; the faculty of ignoring them makes the practical man." - Henry Brooks Adams.
Principles are strong, valued, reliable ideas that guide people in making moral and ethical choices. So, if there are contradictory ones, those contradictions are NOT trifles - Henry Adams is using the word "trifles" ironically and suggesting that this "practical man" acts without serious reference to ethics and morals.
Answer to:
When did the fat buddha emerge in pop culture? Siddhartha was thin
I'm pretty sure the big-bellied Ho Tai image developed in China as a sort of blend between one of their immortals and Buddha. Fat, in countries where food was hard to come by, generally signified good luck and prosperity.

What is Genghis Khan's legacy?
Lots of things, but the one that sprung to mind is: Sauerkraut.
The Mongol horde made it, ate it, and carried it with them in bags as they rode their horses to conquest after conquest - it kept well and was cheap. The conquered found they liked it pretty well, as its popularity in southeast and central Europe attests today.

This is not to offend anyone. But why do some old people ignore you when you say hi or they stare at you like they are pissed off at you?
Hearing and vision impairment, most likely. They might not hear your greeting and they might have to look at you a while to see who you are.
Elderly faces don't have the muscular tightness that young faces do - so while they're looking at you the face might not change or express anything at all. Give 'em time; be patient; you'll BE there someday.

About the only creature NOT at fault was the poor damn dog. The dog's owner needed to keep the dog inside if it barked all the time outside. The neighbor needed to address the issue with the owner and, if that failed, call Animal Control. Slapping the dog was stone dumb. And so the dog paid for everybody's stupidity.

Michelle Obama's inauguration gown was "couture." They're generally one-of-a-kind (or a few, at most) and very expensive.

Answer to:
Have you ever worn darned socks - or darned them yourself - or not have a clue what darned socks are?
Both - worn them and darned them myself. They aren't comfortable, though. Holes wore in places where the sock and the foot rubbed a lot - like at the heel - and darning puts extra thickness right there. It can hurt and cause a blister; also, the hole tends to appear again pretty soon because the rubbing is even worse. Let's hear it for having enough money to buy new socks!

No. I do not see any possible connection between the position of stars and the moment of any individual's birth. I've said this before and been downrated for it, but that can't change what I perceive as logical. I wouldn't spend money or time on astrology, although I would dignify astrology as the "parent" of astronomy - which IS a science.

Beauty is often short lived. Then why does John Keats say that - a thing of beauty is a joy forever?
He also wrote, "She dwells in beauty - beauty that must die." He doesn't say a thing of beauty LASTS forever; he said it is a JOY forever - our perception and memory of a beautiful thing is something we can carry in our memory all our lives.
We treasure what is beautiful in part BECAUSE it cannot last. Instance: We buy fresh flowers knowing that most will be dead in a week.

Do you think that a person who does not change his/her opinion for a long period of time is not learning anything new?
I think most people have opinions on many different things. If a given opinion is well-founded, it might last for a lifetime, during which the same person might revise many OTHER opinions based on new incoming information.
Learning new things sometimes confirms an opinion, too. A lot of people learn continually, but changing an opinion is not a virtue in and of itself.

Also, "Gaite Parisienne," by Offenbach. Same qualifier - it's not from the narrow-sense "classical period," but it's basic classical-music-station fare.

A "conversation" implies that they had made some replies, and if they suddenly change the whole ground situation, then they're clearly messing with me and don't deserve any further attention. I'm unlikely, in any case, in any conversation, to have spent much time talking about my day. I tend to shift...

Do you ever attend school in a "one room" school house?
Yes. Two different ones. District 58 in Cuming County, Nebraska, taught by my own mother. I started school in 2nd grade because I'd learned the other stuff at home. I had third grade in a "town school" (Lyons, Nebraska) and then attended 4th and 5th grades in District 50, another one-room country school. After that, Guardian Angels grade school.

If you see someone is obviously having a bad day, do you say something witty or comical in an attempt to cheer them up? If you are the person having the bad day, do you like when people try to cheer you up?
Witty and comical isn't the best approach when someone's feeling bad. If someone gave me witty and comical when I was stressed out I might make an exception to my normal ladylike demeanor and bite right through their spine where the head joins the busybody.
Better to ask "How can I help?" and assist however they say to do; if they say there isn't really anything I...

They take risks that they shouldn't take, and it's inevitable. Kids have to take at least minor risks; it's how they learn. They have to test limits. But some of what has to be learned is which risks are genuinely dangerous.
So I'm not saying they should not take risks. What makes me nervous is their process of learning which risks could harm them

What happened to harloyn dandridge, daughter of daughty and harold, is she dead or alive and who took
care of her
It's my understanding that Harolyn, who was born severely mentally handicapped, is living out her life in a public institution in Camarillo, CA. Her beautiful mother died at age 42 of an overdose of antidepressants. She cared for her daughter as long as she could and dreaded having to institutionalize her.
Dorothy Dandridge was unforgettable in the movie "Porgy and Bess."
Answer to:
Do you have a gas or electric stove? Which one can you cook better on?
I have and prefer a gas rangetop. (Oven can be gas or electric - no matter.) The cooktop has to be gas, with the ability to increase and decrease the flame continuously, not just low, medium, and high settings.
One DISadvantage of an electric range is that if the bottom of a saucepan or skillet is warped even a little, part of it doesn't come in contact with the heating elements and...

Did the Catholic Church condone the Spanish Inquisitions?
They did. I generally respect the Catholic Church as it is today, but the Inquisition was an ugly time and a low point in church history. Even educated people were dead ignorant compared to educated people today. We have so many "ways to know" today that were unthought of even a couple of centuries ago. (Those who do not seek education today, or who approach education with narrow...

Increasingly, statistical studies in other social sciences - anthropology, archeology (etc.) permit better accuracy. New information keeps coming in as new things are discovered. No. The old-style Latin classes wouldn't be particularly relevant to most of the rest of the curriculum.

What is the fourth wall?
It's a theater/drama/literature term. The audience at a play accepts the idea that they are looking at people in a room (usually) and that one wall is not there. The audience sees a back wall and two side walls. This is an element of unreality that we all accept without even thinking about it, when we're at a play.

Prunesquallor is right, and I'd add only that a few famous and prolific composers' works are also identified by catalog number - Mozart's works have Koechel listing numbers and J.S. Bach's works have BWV (Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis = Bach Works Catalogue) listings.

When I wish my friends happy holidays, I don't wish to confine my wishes only to Christmas.

Are your kitchen knives organized in a particular order?
No.
Also I don't iron sheets and I don't fold lingerie before putting it away in the drawer.

Can you tell me some phrases from your country or even if you are in the United States that you think are rare and only for your area/country? What is the phrase?
I don't live in Boone, California, but those who live there have quite a lexicon of words and expressions used there and nowhere else. Look up Boone or Boontling online for lots of examples.

Have you ever eaten mutton?
Yes, in a restaurant on the Navajo reservation. I found it okay but comparatively tough and tasteless, but most Navajos absolutely love it.

You see a person you find extremely ugly, they are dying, you have a chance to save their life, would you do it? (for the record I wouldn't, but I want your answer)
What a peculiar question. My decision would be based on the rescue's level of risk and probability of success and would have nothing whatever to do with physical appearance.

Answer to:
Did you make your own creche(manger) or did you purchase one?
Thirty-five years ago my sister-in-law Mary did a lot of ceramic work. She made us creche figurines (Joseph, Mary, manger, Infant, shepherd boy, sheep) that I still find very beautiful - ivory in color, with soft brown shadowing. I've seen many beautiful manger scenes and sets, but I've never wanted any except the one we have.

Does it matter to you if Barack Obama chooses to smoke in the White House?
No. The White House family quarters are a private residence. He deserves his privacy. He and his wife and family will decide whether he smokes indoors or not.

Hi Lizalaf.
Ask questions. It's an easy process; the system tells you, after you type in a question, whether it's been asked before - AB tries to keep duplication to a minimum. If people like your questions they'll give you points.
Give sensible and/or clever answers to questions asked by others. You'll get points from othe Answerbaggers if they like your answers (and...

Why does the rail on an escalator travel faster than the steps?
I'm thinking it's because the rail has a wider loop to complete than the stairs do. I don't know for sure, but I'll bet the rail track is lower than the stairs on the underside, just as the rail track is higher than the stairs on the side we stand on.

How would you feel if you found out you were actually a robot?
An android robot, right? (Otherwise you wouldn't ever be in any doubt.) That exact premise drives the movie "Blade Runner," one of my all-time favorite films. Two of its characters may (or may not) be androids, and they run the whole gamut of possible emotions - doubt, anxiety, fear, despair, hope - if you haven't seen "Blade Runner," do.

What did you do last night?
Watched the last disc of series 5 of "Foyle's War," about an English policeman during World War II. It's a very strong series and I wish there were more - but series 5 had the end of the war in it. So: No more war, no more "Foyle's War." And I drank wine with my husband. And I read some more of a novel.

Have you ever eaten a flower?
Sure. Recently actually. I had brought some roses in, and the lavender ones smelled so good that I tasted some petals. They were good, so I ate the rest of the petals.
Every now and then I put flower petals into salads. Nasturtiums are great in salads.

Answer to:
Do you ever worry about the germs that might be on a rented DVD?
No, not even a little bit. We hold the handrail on an escalator, open doors with knobs, use salt-shakers at the food court - and we don't die. We're hardy. Normal people easily fend off everyday germs.

Do you hate it when people wear sunglasses inside?
One hot summer evening in Phoenix a boyfriend and I went into a movie theater. The movie began. I began to wonder whether we'd gotten a bad print of the movie - it was so DARK - and I complained. My BF said, "You know, you're still wearing your sunglasses." And didn't I feel like a weenie!!

really sick of political campaign bullshit.
Then I repeat to myself, "But we change administrations every four or eight years, bloodlessly." That's a GOOD thing.
But I wish it weren't all so dumbed-down and least-common-denominator and smoke-and-mirrors and half-truth. Just a few more days . . . .
