The time may come when you will have to step up and take over for your parents...take away the car keys, involve yourself in their financial affairs, and guide them as they guided you long ago. Are you prepared for that and can you handle that?
The time has come -- it actually started coming 8 years ago when my mother was diagnosed with fallopian tube cancer at the age of 62. Not only was my mother very sick after the surgery and during the five years of chemo before she died but my dad had a tough time coping with it -- he was 17 years older than she and had never imagined he'd have to take care of her, more the other way...

San Diego. The weather's nice. The ocean is beautiful. You can cross the border to TJ if you feel like it. It's a pretty laid back city, but there's plenty to do.

Im 16 coming up 17 and my mum has never gave me any 'talks' about sex, drugs or anything. I dont feel as if i need it or anything, but is it not normal for parents to have these conversations and give advice?
I never got the "talk" either. I think my mom figured that if she signed the permission slip for my participation in "sex ed" class in school, that she was covered, and that I would ask if I had any other questions. Kind of surprising, since after she died three years ago I learned that she had gotten pregnant in college and gave the baby up for adoption. I would have...

What do you say to people who tell you, "Just get over it" when they have no idea how deeply you were affected by what happened?
I've noticed that people seem to say this when 1) they are at a loss as to how to respond to the issue or 2) have heard the issue related multiple times and have no additional advice to give. In either case, I just respond something along the lines of, "I only wish it were that simple," and redirect the conversation because I realize they are either not able or not willing to...

If you truly have a migraine then there's no easing the pain without taking your meds. Your health is more important anyways -- your family would rather have you enjoy Thanksgiving with them than be incapacitated. Looking at a computer screen isn't helpful either. Take your meds, lie down and get better.

For all the gays out there, does it offend you when straight people jokingly say to each other (not in a derogatory way) "you're my lesbian lover" or something of the sort? I hope I made this question clear, I'm not too sure how to explain it.
Wouldn't bug me. In fact, both my wife and I each have an honorary "husband" -- gay guys that we're incredibly close to and would be the closest thing we could imagine to having a romantic relationship with someone of the opposite sex.

If your debt totalled 5000 dollars and you won a sum of money that after taxes equaled 5000 dollars, would you use that money to pay your debt or would you use it on something else?
Depends on the interest rate on my debt vs. the rate of return I could get on investing the cash. If the debt was credit cards then I'd definitely pay it off. If it was a 7% mortgage I wouldn't pay it off because I'm getting a tax credit for my mortgage interest paid. If it was a 5% student loan I would see if there were investment options that would net me more than that 5%...

What would your ideal funeral be like?
My ideal funeral would be to do whatever those I'd left behind wanted. The funeral is to help the living -- not placate the dead. If they want to go on a harbor cruise and get rip-roaring drunk, more power to them. If they want to sit in a church with weeping and gnashing of teeth, fine with me. Whatever they need to help them get closure and move is what I'd want to happen.

How do you spell the name of the autocrat of Russia before the communist revolution in 1918: should it be Tzar or Czar and I don't care what any dictionary tells you either?
I don't think there is ever a "correct" spelling of a term or place name when you're using a different alphabet than the original language of the term. You have to resort to a phonetic approximation, which is then up to interpretation, which tends to change over time. Beijing used to be called Peking -- the name of the city didn't change, just the accepted English...

If a woman likes to have sex with other woman and is married, would you call her bisexual, even though she said she would never have a real realtionship with a woman just sexual.
Hetero-, homo-, and bi- sexuality are terms which denote how a person relates to others in terms of physical attraction and significant relationships with a "mate". Who a person has sex with does not necessarily define their true sexuality. I am a lesbian, but I would not become bi- or heterosexual if I were to have sex with a man. The physical act of sex does not require a deeper...

The doctor will be able to tell that your hymen is broken, which can happen when you have sex, but can also happen with other strenuous activities. Also, if you have a Sexually Transmitted Disease it would be pretty obvious how you got it. You should definitely tell your doctor that you've had sex, because it will help him with his exam. Sometimes I have sperm that is like liquid and sometimes that is concentrated, I get concentrated sperm when I eat good food, so that type of concentrated sperm will make healthy and smart babies, wouldn't it?
Sperm is microscopic -- you can't see it with the naked eye. What you're looking at is semen -- produced by the prostate and used to transport sperm. What you need to find out is if the consistency of semen has any effect on the sperm cells, which are created in the testicles, not the prostate gland.

You may have interference on your phone line which is affecting the speed. It may be in a range that your ear cannot hear, so just listening to the phone line may not let you know whether or not there's a problem. You should have someone come and test your phone lines (especially if you've added extensions in your house without a professional installer).

Normal is a tough generalization. Sometimes none, but the connection and the climax was still worth it. Sometimes one, which can come right away, or really has to be worked at. If you discovered that one of your parents was having an affair with your spouse/partner, who would you be more upset with - your parent, or your spouse/partner?
Eeewwww! Ok, beyond the upset and disgusted part, I would be wondering at the "how" more than the "why". My father is 87 and ailing and my wife is a 40 year old lesbian. Dad would have had to have produced an amazing amount of charm to win her over, and then muster up more energy than he's had in over a year to make something happen. Mom died almost three years ago,...

Which possition in the family do you think is hardest? Oldest hild, middle child, youngest child, or only child?
Definitely oldest. Your parents have high expectations of you and themselves, you're responsible for your younger siblings, you're expected to be the one who's mature all the time, anytime you do something unexpected it's monumental for your parents to cope with, you don't get the benefits of older siblings to clue you in on different teachers and different classes in...

Absolutely. Didn't have one in the house I grew up in (San Francisco Bay Area). Didn't have one in the house I lived in for the last 10 years (Los Angeles area). If you won money in the lottery and took a lump sum, would you have to only pay taxes on it once or would you have to pay every year that you still had the money?
You'd pay when you first won the money (it'd actually be deducted from your winnings by the lottery commission). The only taxes you'd pay after that were on any money you made from your winnings by investing them. If you just put it in the bank you'd pay taxes on the interest income. If you bought stocks or real estate you'd pay capital gains tax whenever you sold...

The mine shaft has caved in. The miners are buried under a mountain. The rescuers are drilling straight down and sending cameras and other sensors when they find an open space, but we're not talking a large diameter hole here. Should the federal government bail out the mortgage industry?
No -- they made an investment based on the concept of risk. When you risk a lot there's a chance it could pay off well, but also a chance it could fail miserably. When you assume the risk, you assume the consequences for either outcome. A bail out would only encourage reckless gambling in the future.

If it's blowing constantly for 8 hours I'd say you're forming ice on the compressor which causes it to malfunction. When you wait a while, the ice melts and the a/c will work again. The secret to air conditioning is that cranking it lower doesn't actually cool the air any more quickly, it just freezes the unit. The best method is to set it for the temp you actually want...

My wife is black, and if someone called her hair "nappy" (unless they were a friend in the context of good-natured joking) she would be pissed. Not because of the critique of her hair (which isn't actually that kinky), but because it conjures up a larger insulting image of thinking she's "less than" because she's black.

What actually is a carburretor and what is its function within a car?
A carburetor's job is to control the mixture of air and fuel for optimal explosions and, therefore, engine performance. Cars nowadays use fuel injectors to accomplish this task, so carburetors are not very common. In an older car you can find the carburetor by lifting the hood and removing the large metal cover in the middle of the engine (which contains the air filter) which is usually...

I don't get her attachment to fabrics. She likes to sew and quilt, but she buys and stores way more fabric than she could ever use and gets very upset if any of it gets damaged. Isn't that the point of job titles -- to convey responsibility and authority? Especially if you're printing them on business cards. You wouldn't want everyone's to say, "Jane Doe, Corporate Lackey". That's why we don't have "secretaries" anymore, but have "administrative assistants" instead.

Is there any way to estimate how much my car insurance will go down when I turn 25?
You could call and ask your insurance broker, but it doesn't usually go down a lot for women -- it's guys who pay through the nose because it's assumed (based on claims data, of course) they're doing stupid maneuvers in their youth. About the only plus to turning 25 in the US is that you can rent a car with no problem.

All four removed when I was 18. The bottom two were impacted and messing up the work of 5 1/2 years of braces so they were all yanked. I've had TMJ ever since and I can feel dents in my lower jaw where the teeth were, but otherwise no complications.

Is it a "member's only" benefit of membership or a "members only" benefit of membership...apostrophe or no?
If you're follwing the phrase with the word "benefit" in the sentence (or implying it) then "member" is -- acting as an adjective -- modifying the benefit, which would make it a member's (for one person) or members' (for all the members) benefit. If you are saying that something is for "members only" then there is no apostrophe because then members...

I have a KILLER mosquito bite on my ankle. It's HORRIBLY itchy. I've been scratching it for about 2 days now. I know I shouldn't be. What can I do to make it stop itching?
I am a mosquito magnet, and react with huge welts when I get bitten -- so I completely sympathize with your plight. My recourse of last resort (i.e. when I just want to remove the body part to make the itching stop) is to put ice on it. The cold blunts the itch sensation, as well as numbing the area for a while. It also reduces the swelling and inflamation a bit, which makes the itch not as...

As biological matter will decompose no matter where it is (the dump or the compost pile), is recycling biodegradable material worth the effort that some cities put into it?
The problem is that once stuff goes into a landfill, it really doesn't decompose -- even if it is biodegradable. People throw stuff away in plastic bags, which (especially when compacted tightly together) permanently preserve and entomb the items within. While future archeologists won't be thrilled, recycling is the only way to reduce the volume of stuff in a landfill.

If it were a blown fuse your lights wouldn't work until the fuse was replaced. It's most likely a poor electrical connection or a short. If you live in an area with a lot of older homes there's usually at least one hardware store that specializes in repair parts that fit the old standards, or general items that aren't found in newer homes. These places are more expensive, but it saves you a lot of time and money in the long run -- especially because the staff knows exactly what you're talking about.

I think the best solution to inane questions/answers/comments would be to not respond at all -- deny the antagonist any satisfaction, positive or negative.

A neighbour has several very tall trees in his garden which overhang my garden and grow right by my fence and house (within feet) the roots of one such tree has now lifted my fence panel and concrete base. What can I do about this solicitors are expensive
I would talk to the neighbor about the problem and ask him/her to split the cost of repairing the fence with you. S/he might be nice and offer to pay for the whole thing. If not (and you really want to be mean), start investigating how to poison the tree via the roots on your side of the fence. At least that way the money you fork over to repair it will be for a more permanent solution.
Answer to:
A business owner pays himself a weekly salary by business checks from the business is this considered his salary?
Since he is the owner, he can take as much or little out of the business as he wants to. He is not an employee, so does not need to be paid as such -- he's paying income taxes on the business as a whole. If he refers to the monies paid out of the business to himself as a "salary", that's fine -- he's the one that who's personal finances are on the line if the...

I have this dream, too. In mine I'm reviewing my semester schedule to figure out when my finals will be held and I realize there's one class I went to once, but never went back and subsequently forgot about completely. I have to take the final cold -- not knowing anything -- and I'm beside myself with stress and self-loathing because I did it to myself and I have no idea why....

1-800-GOT-JUNK does anyone know how much they charge?
It's a franchise -- each franchisee has it's own price list. The charges are based on how many truckloads, or portions thereof, you have to fill. They also have a website that'll allow you to get an idea of how much it will cost in your area, as well as make a reservation. It's not cheap -- but it was well worth it to me to watch two young guys schlep all my crap from my...

My wife left me 9 months ago, she called me asking for help to pay her credit card. She applied for a credit card under my name, Can I sue or do something to stop her from using my name. She doesnt have money for divorce and im not going to pay it.
Depends on where you live. In California you are legally separated as of the day she left, and you are only responsible for debts you personally have incurred since then. I'd go to a lawyer to get the paperwork rolling if you are certain you're not getting back together -- this will help protect your credit. You'll also want to contact your credit card companies (and other...

You have to choose one as a pet -- rat, snake or hedgehog -- which one would you choose? Are you male or female?
Definitely NOT a snake -- don't need to address that phobia. I'm drawn to the hedgehog, but since they aren't native to the U.S. it'd probably be a bit tricky to get one; plus I know nothing about what kind of care they'd require. I guess that leaves a rat. What odes it mean if you have a second cousin twice removed? What does the "second cousin" part mean? And what does the once or twice removed part mean?
The best way to understand this is to imagine a family tree, with all the same generations on the same level. Say your paternal grandparents (dad's parents) had three children. Those children are siblings. The children of the siblings are first cousins (stated another way, your first cousins are the children of your aunts and uncles). The children of first cousins are second cousins....

It depends on your definition of small. If your board is big enough to have committees, and has more members than officers, then it's a good idea in order to keep things on track and not waste a lot of time in board meetings. If you only have five board members, then it's probably more trouble than it's worth.

If you have fallen out of love with your partner because of an incident of cheating and they are working hard to make things right, can you fall back in love?
Being "in love" is a temporary feeling. It comes and go throughout the length of a relationship, but is not the force that untimately sustains it. You need to have an undercurrent of love which is separate from that heady, hormonal, disconnected-from-reality feeling of being "in love" to carry you over in the difficult times. You can still love someone who has hurt you...

Mice are pretty easy to clean. Just unscrew the screw on the bottom of the mouse and separate the top and bottom plastic pieces. If you'll be eating it right away, pick one that is soft when you squeeze it lightly -- but not mushy. It should be evenly soft, as well, as opposed to one soft spot where it's been dropped. If you'll be eating it in a couple days, then pick one that is firmer, but not rock hard. Do not refrigerate -- just leave it on the countertop and it will ripen naturally.

Unless it's someone you know personally (and know they're reliable), absolutely not. You should not rent to anyone without having run a credit check first. Why do they call for a hose pipe ban after its been raining all week
Recent heavy rain doesn't necessarily equate to substantial increases in resevoir levels. Most rain in cities (because of the amount of paved roads and sidewalks) runs straight into the gutter and is not added to the potable water supply. If the snow pack is low or the water table has been depleted it will take a while to be at a place where water is in large supply.

No, no, no. Even if it's true. If I saw that on an applicant's resume I'd chuck it in the waste basket. Instead, emphasize what you've learned through other means than a formal education.

Work in a shop - they have insisted I say at the till "would you like a bag ?" instead of "do you need a bag?" - is this reasonable?
It's reasonable since it doesn't really require any more effort on your part. Think of it this way -- even though 99% of the customers wouldn't notice or understand the difference, think of how happy you'll make the 1% of customers who are grammar perfectionists! Their faces will probably light up at the recognition of correct usage! This happy feeling will encourage...

Do you want to hear thank you after you make a purchase in a store or or you happy with there you go or receipts in the bag?
"Thank you" is nice to hear, not to mention common courtesy. What bugs me is when cashiers are instructed to use your name in that sentence (since it prints out many times on your receipt). I find it annoying when their attempt to be "friendlier" ends up being a constant reminder of how many ways someone can mangle my last name. If we've not been introduced, please...

Why on earth do people spend thousands of dollars each year to take their young child(ren) on vacation to someplace exciting, when the child(ren) probably won't remember, or appreciate, a thing?
My parents took my brother and me on all vacations. Some were to visit family, some traditional tourist spots. I have tons of memories of those trips (some of the ones where I'm riding backwards in the station wagon I'd like to forget) going back to when I was very young (probably 5-ish). I do appreciate that I've spent time with family I might not have seen otherwise, that...

Have you ever herd of the Gosspil of Thomas it is not in the Bible it is a missing text, it was found by early christians in Egypt but never published?
The Gospel of Thomas is not one of the canonical Gospels (meaning it's not officially approved by the church to be included in the Holy Bible). It has been published, though -- and used as text for choral music. It is a Gnostic gospel. The Gnostics were a sect of Christianity that existed in the early church, but were eventually declared to not be following the "true" faith....

Have you ever herd of QUE ? Missing text that was never found of published in the Holy Bible?
Yes, but it's called "Q". It's assumed to be an original gospel source because if you line up the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke there are certain commonalities among the three, despite the fact that they were written by different authors in different styles and for different audiences. I hadn't heard it was going off the air. I haven't watched it regularly since I was in college (late 80's)but I remember my mom watching it (and Another World) when I was in a playpen. That had to be pretty near the beginning of the show -- I can tell you plot lines and characters from ages ago. I'll be sad to see it go.

What is Tribadism?
(from About.com: Lesbian Life) Tribadism involves rubbing your genitals against another person's genitals or other body part. Many lesbians enjoy tribadism because they can involve their whole bodies. Also called "humping", tribadism can involve straddling a partner's leg, pubic bone or any other body part. I found out after my mom died that she'd gotten pregnant in college and had given the baby up for adoption. Big family secret. I've also heard "when donkeys fly", but more often the pigs. My dog has seen a pig fly -- a slice of honeybaked ham accidently flipped off the counter and landed on her back, much to her great joy. And we had just been telling her (and her sad puppy dog eyes) that she'd get a slice of ham when pigs flew!

I grew up in the San Franciso Bay Area -- as it was becoming Silicon Valley. I now live in Los Angeles. I think I miss the weather the most. LA is miserable in the late summer/early fall. It is considered one of the triggers for migraine -- I don't know how common it is among all migraine sufferers, but it is known to happen. Migraines are caused (it's believed) by blood vessels in the brain constricting and then expanding (the expansion causing the pressure and pain), so it makes sense that an orgasm could set off that chain of events.

What was it like living in the 80's?
Oh my, you make it sound like ancient history -- like asking what was it like living during the Black Plague! It wasn't terribly different than now, except for the technological advances. PCs were more of a luxury item, many cars still used leaded gas, microwaves were new as well as VCRs, you actually had to go inside a bank to get cash, and people with HIV/AIDS died from it because the...

Do you think being happy is a decision you have to fight to make everyday?
I've never been able to decide to have a certain emotion. I have noticed sometimes that I seem to be in a better frame of mind than normal and, when I poke around in my brain, realize, "Hey, I'm actually happy!" What I do have to fight is the propensity to focus on the negative which will spiral me into overwhelmed inactivity. I can focus on not verbalizing my negative...

Two big ones which can be either a misuse or a misspelling (depending on whether or not I am giving the benefit of the doubt) that drive me nuts are: 1) affect/effect -- you affect something, and the result of that is an effect; and 2) breath/breathe -- a breath is the thing you take into your lungs when you breathe.

Could you live for a long time in any city of the world, if you knew the language?
Even more importantly than the language would be how the culture of that city felt about the role of women in the society. I "could" live in a society where women are not allowed to be seen without their husbands, etc., but I surely wouldn't "want" to. If I were a man, I think I could live most anywhere without problem -- language can be learned when you're...

I can remember getting a fresh diaper change (cloth diapers, plastic pants) and then toddling out to show off my clean diapers to my Big Brother Jon. Xena, since the "planet" that was discovered beyond Pluto (before the big bruhaha about planet definitions) had this name informally, but then it was changed in the official records. Visa was started by Bank of America, back in the 70's when the bank was only in the San Francisco Area. Master Charge also started at about the same time, but I'm not sure what, if any, bank it was sponsored by. The Master Card company just went public in the last year...

"Put your shoulders back" and "Go run a brush through your hair". Well, if that were the case, then the entire argument against same-sex couples marrying and having kids would be shot to hell. Usually TVs have red, green and blue colors that combine to make up all the others. My first guess would be that your blue lamp/lens is to blame. If you can't tell by looking at it directly, go into the menu of the tv and start playing with isolating the color levels to see if you can tell exactly which ones are working and which ones aren't.

What is the longest amount of time after a food or drink expires, that you will be adventurous and eat or drink anyway? Ex: Unopened milk that expired 3 days ago.
The expiration date on food products in the U.S. is the last date they can be sold by the store. They are still consumable after that point. So if it's in my fridge and it still looks/smells okay, then I'm game. You can get a nice extra zip off of orange juice that's just barely gone over the edge :)

At what age should a girl start to douche?
Ummm...douching is not necessary. I never have, and I don't know anyone who does. Bathing regulary takes care of odor and nature takes care of its own pH balance -- flushing things out artificially has a tendency to muck things up and make one more prone to yeast infections.

If you were offered eternal life but you had to give up your sexuality, would it be worth it? Could you live without expressing such a prescious part of yourself?
The way I read your question, it's not about giving up sex, but your sexuality. So, for me, that would be a "no". I can't give up a part of me -- I can't give up being right-handed, or Caucasian, or an introvert. Even if I never had sex again I would still be gay and I wouldn't give that up for anything.

Absolutely. And until there's an across-the-board evaluation process for all potential parents one can't make the assertion that heterosexual parents, by default, would have increased ability and skills to raise a child properly. I've known a lot of straight parents who had no business raising a child, but by the default of biology were able to reproduce to their hearts'...

It only annoys me because of what I term "blatant heterosexuality". I would love to able to walk down the street with my wife and hold her hand, much less kiss her, without causing a stir. Do you use the terms "gay" or "retarded" to describe things or people you think are dumb, stupid or inferior in some way?
I did in grade school, because they were just words to me -- I didn't really think about what it meant. But now, as an adult, I would never use them -- not only because they're inappropriate, but because 1) I'm gay, and 2) my nephew is mentally retarded. That would be insulting myself and my family!

What is the relationship between height and shoe size?
For women, it's not necessarily true. It's not unusual for a woman's feet to grow (lengthwise) after giving birth. I know my mother was a size 9 when she got married at age 29, but sometime in her 30s grew to a size 11. She was 5'8" tall. I'm also 5'8", but I wear a size 8. I've never been pregnant and am almost through my 30s, so I think...
Answer to:
I'm sixteen. Will I grow taller than I am right now? Is there anything I can do to increase my height?
It's possible you still have growth to come. Both my brother and I were late bloomers (we took after my Dad). At age 16 I was 5'3", but didn't finish growing until I was out of college -- now I'm 5'8" (I'm female). My brother was probably about 5'5" at 16 and now he's over 6 feet tall (he also didn't finish growing until early 20s)....

Have anyone noticed that gasoline prices are lower around holidays? Why?
In many states the refining requirements change from summer to winter. Demand for gas is greater in summer because of vacations and must be refined in a more expensive manner to reduce smog in the warm weather and is therefore more expensive. Winter has 1) less driving and 2) less expensive refining requirements, therefore cheaper gasoline.

Are aluminum cans really worth what each can's top claims in Michigan? The last time I paid attention, Indiana's aluminum scrap metal was 65 cents per pound. What am I misunderstanding here?
The amount printed on the can is the amount that you paid up front when you bought the drink. For example, if I buy a soda for $.65 in California I'm really paying $.60 for the soda and 5 cents as a refundable deposit. When I bring the can to be recycled, I get my 5 cents back, so the $.05 isn't the value of the can, it's just the deposit amount (which could be 1 cent or 1...

No. Unless you cut back on your driving it doesn't make any difference because you'll just buy gas the next day. Also, counting for inflation, gas isn't any more expensive than it was in the 70's -- it's actually been artificially inexpensive for a number of years.

No, but not taking care of your teeth while you have braces will weaken them. You have to be extra concious of brushing carefully and not eating foods that would damage the braces. However, I had full bands for 5 1/2 years and didn't have any cavities...

For a while (fairly recently) there was a theory that red hair was one of the last genetic remains of the Neanderthals that had somehow bred in with what became Homo Sapiens. What happens to the blood in our body when we die?
First, the blood separates into the solids and the fluids. If you were to puncture someone who had been dead what would come out would be watery (thus the reason the soldiers punctured the side of those crucified to test if they were dead yet -- if you got "water" instead of blood the person had died). Eventually, as the body decompses (assuming no mortuary's involved) the...
