In a hypothetical culture absent of gender stereotypes, is developing an internal gender identity important for children?
I think young children should not be encouraged to identify with one gender or another. Toys and clothing could be warily unisex so that children will be able to explore the full range of their gender, meaning that females will be able to explore typical male play and etc.
It would be interesting to see how young children would benefit if society did not treat the two, and the in between,...

I have had fifth disease for several weeks and am trying to find some thing which can be succesful at getting rid of or easing the symptoms of the rash.
If it itches lanacane and calamine lotion can help. If its built up and needs to be thinned hydrocortizone will help and Neosporin will help keep it bacteria free. Yet,if it is a really nasty large rash, skip all the over the counter lotions and go to the dermatologist: you may need a prescription to cure it.

It's obvious this situation is making you miserable.
His age and position is probably part of the turn on for you. It has to be quite an aphrodisiac. But at what cost? Not to mention his wife. But your the one asking the question. At what cost is it too you? Is it worth your self esteem and self respect. You have the power here, use it and end it.

I recently broke up with my boyfriend and now i want him back but the thing is that when im with him i dont want him when im not i long for him WHYYYY? am i falling for him?
Because you want both: to be with him and to be free. To be back with him is tempting because it is something you know. Even if it wasn't good, you still knew what to expect and derived security from that. Let your feelings and emotions ride and don't try to fix things. You need space and time to get some clarity.

Do you believe that if you want something bad enough you'll get it?
There is something about the tenacity that comes with passion and drive based on a belief that you will achieve your goal. I also think that what you put out in the universe comes back to you, so in a karmic way if you are pure with your intentions you will get what you deserve. Though I have to stress it may not be what you think you want or need. You may learn that what you wanted was not...

I think that there are many cities where homosexuals can be quite supported by their community.
Yet many people discriminate on the base what they think is the racial profile of a Muslim. And that is harder to avoid. It is very sad, for non extremist Muslims (and there are more of them then the jihadist's) are practicing a noble faith.

I have only ever seen that response from believers when the church they belong to is extreme, often evangelical. When technically does an affair "begin"? When you start "talking", when you start kissing or when you "do it"?
It all depends on the situation.
Sometimes one will have an emotional affair with another that never becomes physical. Yet the damage is still done to the relationship because the couple are no longer sharing their thoughts and emotions with each other. That is a necessary part of a healthy relationship for most.
A kiss could lead to a continued physical affair. Or a kiss could just be...

Ask a professional first before you decide what to do. A psychologist, social worker, clergy. What every you do you will have to do it carefully and make sure the girl is supported so that she can properly deal with it. If the girl is young she will not have developed the coping skills necessary to deal with this information. DO not do this alone.

How long do you actually spend brushing your teeth? Do you do everything the dentist tells you too, ie(floss and use mouthwash also)?
I brush for about a minute. Too quick I know. No mouthwash.
I started flossing nightly about a year ago. It took a long time to make it a habit. What finally worked was to have floss on the the coffee table and floss while watching TV. My boyfriend does that too now. We don't do this in front of company.

I think U.S. schools should require children to take a foreign language starting as early as first grade. It would be nice if there could be choice between two or three languages like in high school, but that may not be practical. I suggest Spanish and Japanese.

If one was George Bush they could never have the opportunity to stop being George Bush. A janitor, if they wanted a different job, has their whole life to work on changing their circumstance.
But as to your question: if I had to pick one or the other for the entirety of my life I would pick a janitor for at least its honest work.

Do you think jail can turn a "good" person bad?
I think it has been shown that warehousing criminals together is not helping to re-educate them. When a good person has comitted a crime what needs to change is their whole way of living. There is not only criminals teaching other people to be better criminals, but drugs, and sexual/physical/mental abuse. The prison environment is not conducive to change.

I was on the pill for about a week, used a condom. I had been off my period for 2 days. I hear you have to be on birth control for a month or so for it to be effective. What are the odds that I'm pregnant?
Take a pregnancy test to find out rather than trying to find out if its possible. It will end the torture you are doing to yourself in your head (Am I or Am I not??). I would think it would be very unlikely that you are. Yet no birth control is ever 100% effective(except abstinence, which is not a realistic choice for many).

That's an interesting thought. When I see fashion layouts and covers they women are often portrayed as very sexy. Since these women do not have large breasts the sexy look comes through in the face. The come hither look and the pout.

The questions I have the hardest time with is when people ask for advice in the third person. For example, "How do you know when you drink too much?" Then I'm not sure if the person just wants to know people's views in general, or if I should...

Answer to:
Why do I always think in a negative way?
Because thinking differently takes practice. You have to be conscious of when you are thinking negatively and then examine the situation to see if your negative view is valid. A lot if negative thinking comes from thinking errors. There is an old book that is a great tool to help change your cognitive behavior for the better.
Felling Good by David Burns. It lists all the thinking errors and...

People who are good advocates. I enjoy being inspired and am always awed how one person with a vision can motivate others.

I think when we are in a relationship, you see a lot. And on occasion you may see something that makes you think ewww and you push it out of your brain because you love your mate.
But if you are having problems in your relationship you may not have a strong enough bond to push those thoughts out of your mind. I doubt that it is ever really only about the physical appearance that makes...

My wife cheated on me and confessed on our 3 year anniversary. She says she loves me and wants my forgiveness. Is it wrong of me to tell her to hit the road?
I think its odd that she didn't have enough restraint to tell you on a different date than on your anniversary. Yet maybe she felt hypocritical remembering your union when she knows she hasn't been faithful.
I suggest you try to get some space so you can think through how you want to proceed.

After asking a Question do you think you should go down the List making sure it is not a Duplicate Question before clicking Sumit --?
I try to check to see because I don't want to break the spirit of answer bag. If it is a duplicate I will answer the original in order to bring the question back. Or if I mean something different I try to reword it.
I do find it sad when good questions die and get buried, and then don't get resurrected but just resubmitted.

I'm suspicious when they try to package it and sell it to an audience, such as with the movie What the Bleep do They Know. But that doesn't necessarily invalidate their ideas. Personally for me I think its interesting, but more debate or if possible evidence, needs to be found before I can see the metaphysical through a quantum theory lens.

A scream would contain a lot less information than a thesis, but it grabs ya. It also is an expression of one's humanity; you have to be able to feel in order to scream. Sometimes arguing, presenting and representing the good fight with writing doesn't work.
It also would evoke a visceral response from people, which would be hard to do in a thesis.

DO you think that people that copy DVDs that they rent just for their own personal use are bad? Why?
No way
#1 Some rental companies, such as Blockbuster, give nothing back to the community and have horrible customer service policies. It makes people want to rip them off. Not ethical, but true.
#2 Society and culture is changing. Books, TV, Movies and Music will become available to us when we want, where we want, and what we want. This is the future. Piracy is what is fueling this...

Who is your favorite artist?
Mark Rothko
Seeing his series of red canvases at the Tate gallery in London was an experience. They are large canvases whose gradation in color (red) throughout each canvas creates an abstract sea for the viewer to enter.
It felt like a religious experience

Answer to:
Are you scared of driving a car?
It used to freak me out. But one thing you have to learn about fears is that you have to nip them in the bud before they become a problem.
For example I started to worry about driving over bridges worrying they would collapse. Then I thought about how much it would suck if I worked myself up so much I couldn't drive over bridges.
So I used a lot of relaxation tricks like...

Answer to:
Is there any good way to go about convincing a friend to not join a religious cult?
If your serious and this is one of your friends, bite the bullet and tell her/his parents. Unless they are cult members too. If this is not an option are there any people whose opinion that your friend would respect.
Another idea is to contact a professional and do an intervention.

When you cross to the Canada to US border by car, do they search your vehicle?
They can. A lot of that depends on if you look suspicious. My friends had their car searched because one of them did not have a passport or birth certificate. SO make sure to have proper documentation.
I also suspect they search vehicles randomly as well to discourage drug and weapon trafficking.

Do you believe in the flying spagetthi monster?
My father was a staunch atheist. Growing up I once remember him pointing to a spider who had maid a cozy web in the corner of the room. "Prove to me that that is not God," he asked.
I used to have nightmares that I would go to hell because my family did not believe in god, and of course all my friends families did.
Yet over time I cannot call myself an atheist, but believing in...

Girls: Have you ever made your best guy do "girlish" things?
My boyfriend has beautiful long lashes. They hit his sunglass when he wears them. I have wanted and asked to put mascara on them just once, but he will have none of that.
If you love your man its not right to force him to do things he doesn't want to

My boyfriend just broke up with me, he told me he needed some time to clear his head, but he is always breaking up with me and then comes back..we just got back together a week ago and now he broke up with me today...we been together 3 yrs
Sounds like a roller coaster. If this back and forth is hurting you more than helping you then start the process of grieving and let him go for good. You will be happier in the long run.

Answer to:
If I have a right triangle that is 10 feet on the base, and 4 feet high, how many degrees is the angle opposite the base?
Side a=10
Side b=4
You want to find the the angle E.
In this case, you know that leg a has a length of 10 and leg b has a length of 4.
To find angle E, we can use the relationship that:
tan E = a/b
or, solving this equation for E, we get that
E = tan-1(a/b)
or
E = arctan(a/b)
Plugging in that a=10 and b=4 we get that:
Angle...

Do you consider homeless people as lazy?
No. The majority of homeless are mentally ill. In the 80's when mentally ill care was deregulated many people who were institutionalized were then released, landing on the street without a safety net. This is a complicated unfortunate situation with no easy answers. I'm not sure if institutionalization is the answer.
It is nearly impossible to improve your situation when you do not...

What do you think of this statement? Repetition is a form of change.
When you repeat something is there something new in the expression by the act of creating it again? Even if the action or the result looks, feels, appears the same.
The doublespeak nature of the statement was why I asked the question. This statement reminds me of a koan. The more you grapple with it the less sure you are of an answer.
To give credit: I borrowed the statement I used in...

What's the ACT test?
I bet your talking about the American College Test. It is a college entrance exam similar to the SAT. When you apply to college it is important to know which exam they accept. I remember from when I went through this process, generally speaking the SAT was required for most West Coast colleges and the ACT was required for East Coast colleges.

What book just blows your mind?
The Wind-up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami
It has a wonderfully absurd plot, yet the mystery in the narrative is as compelling as any "traditional" plot. There are a few stories within stories and at three seperate times in the book, people spend time at the bottom of a well. If you like the writings of Paul Auster, Witold Gombrowicz or Kazuo Ishiguro you will love The Wind-up...

Why is there a space between Lyons and Spakowski?
The space you refer to is on a Cop of the Year award plaque between Lyons ’64 and Spakowksi ’66. Originally there was a name in that space, Robert Milano, who was awarded the title in ’65. Milano was framed for a murder and killed himself. Because of his guilty status his award was rescinded and his name removed from the plaque, leaving a space between Lyons and Spakowski.

What are your thoughts on graffiti and tagging?
I appreciate both for they are one way a person can express themselves without going through established channels. Art Museums and galleries, even those that show cutting edge work, are still products of the culture that establishes what is the norm.
Unfortunately not all taggers are concerned with their work as art and see the artifact they've left behind as an indicator of status and...
