Would you abort a baby with Down Syndrome or severe disability? Statistics say 93% of people do. This is a hypothetical question. I had a heated discussion with another pregnant friend of mine. Please keep it polite.
I think life is hard enough when a person has all their falculties intact. I also believe that the disorder comes about becuase of a defect in the egg or sperm cell. A manufacturing error if you will. In my opinion I think it is cruel to force a living being to live a life destined for pain and loneliness. Why are we repulsed by the arrogance of someone, even if it is justifiably backed by his genuine superiority?
Who gets to determine that superiority? Although I think repulsed is a little strong of a word for the emotional response, I think the reason people are put off is because the person usually determining that superiority is the person who sees themselves that way.

My Boxer and I walk everyday. I have noticed his feet and toes are red and inflamed. I wipe them off everytime we come back from a walk. I'm thinking maybe walking in grass there is something there. Any suggestions?
Needless to say, he's probably in a lot of pain (imagine if your feet were red and inflamed) and needs to go to the vet. It could be anything, an allergic reaction to grass, or whatever you are using to wipe his feet, or an infection of some sort. If it is very hot were you are you could have burned his paws. This actually happened to my dog once. We live in the south and I stupidly took...

My ex won't sign our final divorce decree and I'm supposed to get married at the end of May. What can I do? We live in Virginia.
In some states you can get a divorce by default. But you will have to wait a designated period of time (which is probably different in different states). You will need to get a lawyer and find out what the law is in Virginia. I know in Maryland you have to wait a year from the date you were separated and attest to the fact that you have not lived together as man and wife during that time.

Does the fact that your parents fed you, clothed you, and gave you a place to live overshadow any psychological damage that they may have inflicted? Why or why not?
No it does not overshadow anything. In fact, they CHOSE to have a child and the "feeding, clothing, and housing" are obligations they had to that child. The child does not owe them anything for providing the necessities of life since they chose to start that life. The debt lies with the parents to provide care and to nurture the child to adulthood. That is the price of having children...

I think the "twice" should give you your answer. What is that saying "Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me..." But I think you know this. Its said someone who grows up in a 'dramatic' home -- one where fights were a daily way of being-- 'only knows' that to be the 'normal' way to function. Have you overcome this tendency IF this was true for you? What made the difference for you?
Tension was a constant when I was growing up. It took me a long time to realize that I put myself in situations to continue that drama. In fact I thought if someone didn't yell and scream or physically hurt me that they must not care enough. Then one day I got hurt very badly and decided that I didn't want to be in relationships where I was regularly intimidated by someone.

alcohol is a toxin to the body. Toxins are metabolized by the liver. Whether or not enough of these toxins get to the brain to damage it may depend on how much and how often you drink and the condition of your liver. There Is new evidence that alcohol consumption can cause different types of cancer. Generally speaking, cancer cells are just cells with damaged or mutated genetic codes.

Marlboro cigarettes have hit a new high cost in Tennessee. Are the Marlboro cigarettes online at the Cigarette Store, the same as those manufactured in the United States? They are 12.39 a carton, from Europe.
I'm not sure but I think it's illegal to ship cigarettes across state lines and probably internationally. So the cigs are probably made here and sent there, but it may be illegal (for taxing reasons) to have them sent back here to you. Anyone else out there know if this is correct?

Has your life ever been changed by an apparently random occurrence?
In fact I think about this quite a bit. The randomness of some of the things that happen in life that changed the path I was on at the time. I find myself wondering, what if I wasn't there or just missed that person, or said no when asked to go somewhere. It can drive you crazy if you let it, and sometimes I'm not sure it would be that long of a trip (for me that is)!

Is it ironic that Judges get paid more, on average, than teachers in the USA?
Ummm,no. Judges are lawyers. Lawyers tend to be more educated than teachers (4 yrs then law school) and they generally have to have quite a bit of experience before they are appointed judges. But I think I get what you are trying to say: If we had better teachers we probably wouldn't need so many lawyers because there would be less criminals. I just don't know if the choice of judges...

OK hate to be the naysayer here but since those of the Jewish religion do not believe that Jesus was the son of God, it would be counter-intuitive to say he would still be a Jew by their current standards. Either he's a Jew and he is just a prophet (as Jews believe), or he a Christian and the son of God. The only other option would be a really bad self esteem issue...

We have a small ranch house in the southern US with a heatpump/AC and a female with hot flashes (so the temp is usually around 68-70 degrees in here). We do have a lot of trees that block the sun though, which makes it easier to cool in the summer. Our bills run around $100-$110 USD a month in the summer and about $70-$80 in winter.

When I was a kid every thing had to be even. If I had M&Ms I had to eat an even number. If I skipped rope, I had to end at an even number. I was sure if I didn't do this something very bad would happen. I finally got over that one in my late teens.
I'm told I have abandonment issues so I'm guessing that that is a fear I've had since childhood and have yet to shake.

How do you feel about Deer Hunting?
Now watch as I try to deal logically with things that suck... I hate the idea of killing or harming ANYTHING for sport. Yet, I have lived in places where deer hunting was seriously prohibited, to some extent, and I have seen the dead deer on the side of the road who were desperately searching for food on the highway.

Answer to:
How do you get over a death?
They say you go through stages, and everyone goes through them at different speeds and in different order. The stages are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. There is no fixed method to go through them and not everyone goes through them all or even gets to acceptance. You have to work at it, and try to deal with it. Life is not easy, nor is dealing with death...

I hate to admit it, but hubby travels a lot and I do sleep better when he is out of town. I do have an explanation though! I have a bad back and if I stay too long in the same position it starts to hurt. When he is there, and the dogs are there, even our king size bed does not allow much movement. But it's a small price to pay to have him home. (Everyone say awwwwh now!)

Since most shyness is based on insecurities or self-esteem issues, you may want to try conselling, or even better (and cheaper) try hypnosis. You can get every kind of hypnosis download or cd off the internet these days. Try Amazon. com.
Hypnosis may be able to change the shyness that you feel in social situations.

Will the new points system, where you need thousands of points to level up, drive you away from AB? Or are you not here for points?
I think it's a great idea! Kudos for whoever came up with it. This way you still get the points which allows those who need it, to feel some kind of approval, yet the main focus of this site won't be about achieving points to move up levels anymore.

Which works better: liquid fabric softener, or dryer sheets?
I don't think dryer sheets work very well. I am absolutely in love with Gain tropical scent fabric softner. My husband came home one night and after I hugged him I kept smelling him saying "What smells so good?" We could have been a commercial. So, needless to say, he really likes it now also.

On an international site like this why do so many questions assume we all live in North America?
I guess some would say that we are spoiled enough to think the world revolves around us. I think a lot of it comes from the fact that we are such a large country with oceans on two sides. Unlike Europe/UK, most of us here are not used to having different countries so close. It tends to alter your perception of things somewhat.

Does your home have a junk drawer? Have a look, what's in it?
Yes we have one in the kitchen. My husband spent the day cleaning it out a couple of weeks ago. He put all the pens and pencils together in a little box ( there had to be 50) and the batteries, rubber bands, little screw drivers, and all the other doodads in separate little boxes. I give it a couple of months before it's completely destroyed again. But for right now we look organized.

An important question to ask is if he has been paying child support during his 3 yrs in prison. If not, that would give you grounds to fight the visitation. Also on top of your daughters wish not to visit with her father, you also would have the concern of your daughter staying overnight with a convicted felon. IMO a judge would give these points some serious consideration.
Answer to:
Should my wife and I have a child? We are both healthy, financially stable, and live in a good neighborhood.
I think the fact that you're asking this type of question where you are asking it makes me wonder whether you are ready for such a responsibility. You have to make a huge amount of decisions when you have children, and I don't know if looking for a general consensus on the right thing to do from complete strangers is a good way to handle it. My husband has told me that he does not feel appreciated. Yet when I ask what I can do to make him feel appreciated he said that he does not want to give me a checklist (recipe). .. What makes a man feel appreciated?
I think someone would say that if they are feeling taken for granted. So, I would think the best thing you could do is acknowledge the things he does do, even if he has always done them and you've just gotten used to it. You need to sit down and think of what he contributes to the relationship (make a list if you have to), and then you need to let him know that you appreciate those things....

OK since there aren't going to be many takers, here's my thoughts on the subject. We take two really big societal problems and use one to solve the other. When you are not in an argument or in an intimate situation, just tell him that you need to talk to him (privately) and tell him that you don't want to hurt his feelings, and that you really do like him, but that you are disturbed by his bad breath.
I honestly can't tell you how he will take it, but at least you were honest.

How fine of a line is there between genuis and insanity?
Well if you consider that "insanity" aka mental disorders, are determined by repetitive behavior that is different from the normally accepted behavior. And then you consider that being a genius is different from the norm. It's not a stretch to see that many geniouses are considered crazy. So I guess the answer is pretty fine line

I've heard if you take a dish towel and soak it with white vinegar, twist out the excess, and then wave it around the kitchen it's supposed to get rid of the smell. I tried it and thought it worked, but I'm not sure if I had just gotten acclimated to the smell

I have thought the same thing many times. Even if kids lie and say they are over 18, there still would not be all the "Does he like me?" or "Is 13 too young to have sex?" questions. It would be refreshing, and much more enjoyable.

You had an oral contract. It is not going to help you pay the rent but you can take him/her to civil court. If his/her name is on the lease you may be able to talk to the landlord and work something out. If not you can explain it to them and see if they will give you a break. If the landlord won't help your only option until court would be to find the money or find some place else to live.

I suppose you have apologized for sleeping with his friend even if you were briefly apart. It's never a good thing to do. It also depends on how long you were actually apart. What is the most effective way to quit smoking?
I used nicotine gum, then I became addicted to the gum for quite some time (very expensive habit), then I used the patch to get off the gum. I haven't smoked in about 2 years, and haven't chewed the gum for about a year. Hubby read a book called the "Easy way to quit smoking" or something similar to that title (he's not here or I'd ask him), he also used the patch...

Are you more or less religious than you were when you were a kid?
Much less religious. I was raised Roman Catholic. I went to Catholic school for a while did the Holy Communion, and Confirmation thing and I think I believed what they were telling me for a while. The first crack in my belief structure came when I asked one of the sisters to explain who Cain married since the only people there were at the time were Adam, Eve, Cain, and the resently deceased...

They are called positive affirmations, it's a form of cognitive therapy. Supposedly, if you continue to tell your brain something over and over it will begin to believe it. At least that is the theory, and it is a legitimate theory. How effective it is after your formative years, I don't know.

Does microwaving your dish sponge actually kill the germs, or do you think it just makes us FEEL like it does?
Yes it supposedly works, but you have to make sure the sponge is wet. I heard of someone setting their microwave on fire because they put a dry sponge in there (I don't know if it's true, I just heard it, but it does make sense that it would do that). Also, I believe it only needs to be nuked for 30 seconds. Five minutes sounds a little long.

Where does the phrase "hell is paved with good intentions" come from?
I always thought it meant that many people have good intentions but it takes more than that to be a good person. You have to not only mean to do good, but to actually do it.
I've heard many a person after hurting someone use the defense that they "didn't mean to do it". Well even if you didn't intend to do it you still did it, so it counts.

If the skin is broken, put some antibiotic solution on it, wrap it up and take an anti-inflammatory and try not to cry. That's about it...

2 part question to all those who are against Marijuana: why do you condemn it, and what situation have you directly been involved in that led you to your final stance on this substance?
The way I see it you can do whatever you want as long as I don't have to live with you or have any dealings where I need to depend on you. I think we could put all the pot smokers in a big room and let you stare at tv for the rest of your life. This way you could be high all the time and not bother anyone. Do I think it should be legalized? No, I don't. I think we have enough people...
Answer to:
Which is worse, a drunk or a stoner?
Having had the unfortunate opportunities to live with both, they both suck. Pot makes them indifferent, stupid, and extremely boring. I've had plant life with more personality than a pothead. Now drunks are rarely indifferent, in fact they are normally the opposite, getting exceeding upset or angry over little things, yelling, agruing, or crying, they're just a ton of fun. I also...

What type of questions would you like to see more of and or less of from Answerbag users?
I'd like to see questions/answers grouped separately into age categories. I know that's done now but in my opinion it's not done very well. Maybe there could be an AB for kids, and an AB for grown ups etc. Where each doesn't necessarily have to see the others questions. I think it would clear out a lot of the silly stuff.

Appearantly my marriage has issues that i was unaware of... how do i get my husband to open up to me and tell whats really bothering him.
It appear to me that he might feel that there is a very fine line between having a discussion and confrontation. I have been in situations where I thought I was having a discussion, only to find out that my husband felt like he was being forced into a confrontation. I have learned to some extent to try to give my point of view while trying not to appear accusatory, but it's very difficult...

WOMEN: How many of you could change a flat tire if you had to - NO cel phone, no "OnStar," and on a deserted road, but with a spare, jack, manual, etc.? Not meaning to sound sexist at all. I'm just curious. Could you do it?
I changed quite a few flats, rotate my own tires, change my own oil and belts, and I used to adjust my own clutch until my car with the cable clutch died. And just in case you are wondering, I'm not a "Tomboy" and no one would ever classify me as masculine no matter how you stretched the interpretation.
But I do have to admit I know a lot of women who can't or won't...

I don't know if you can repair your relationship. But I do know if you don't try to understand why you lose your temper it will probably keep occuring. So rather than making promises you may not be able to keep, you may want to work on that first. There is a good book called "Taking charge of your anger" by W. Robert Nay that might help. If not that one, there are tons...

Hypnotism... do you think YOU could be hypnotized? Do you think it's real? Is it only for weak minded people? Is it just an act? (for medical, psychological, or entertainment purposes)
I don't think it's something all that magical. It's just obtaining a state of relaxation that is slightly above being asleep. Supposedly, you are more open to suggestion at that point. The reason it will not work if you don't believe is because you have to be able to get to that stage of relaxation, and if you have doubts, this will be much more difficult. I have been...

Hey Anonymous,
If your dad would prefer to be sitting in front of a computer looking at porn instead of attending his 13 yr old daughters play, I think he has a problem. It is not normal under those circumstances. You have a right to be upset. When parents decide to have children they take on the job of caring for that child in every sense of the word including emotionally. You should not be...

In your big toe or on your big toe? In sounds like an infection or possibly an ingrown toenail depending where the burning is located on the toe, or it could be a corn or callous that is irritating a nerve (that one is a guess). If it's on the toe it could possibly be fungal.

You can, you just have to keep looking to find what works for you. You DO have the ability to control your life because it IS your life. It may take some more disappointment, but if you don't try, you can't say that something...

Does reality exist outside what your mind processes as "real"? Do we have mental control over what we see, experience, and define as "real"?
I believe that reality is relative to the individual and therefore we have control over the way we see things, experience things, and define things. Ask two people who experienced the same event what happened and you may get 2 different but truthful stories. This is probably because their perceptions of the event (or reality) were different

It's doubtful that he doesn't care, he may be unable to show his emotions for one reason or another. Well I'm not sure that what your parents give you should be considered a loan to be repaid. By chosing to reproduce you chose to owe a debt to that child. It's not vice versa IMO

I don't think everyone is hypocritical. But when people are I think it may be because it's a lot easier to say something than to do it, and much easier to judge others than ourselves.

My wife's job is requesting that she do some traveling. I have turned down promotions with my company beacuse my wife and I did not want me traveling. Now that it is her job she is considering it. How should I handle this, and not be unfair to her.
It really all depends on how you feel about it. If you feel you will resent the double standard then I think you should let her know. If she doesn't appreciate your side then you will have to do some thinking about your relationship. If you resent it and don't tell her then I think you're risking causing damage to your relationship by not giving her the chance to see it from your...

Why is it ok to have all black events such as Miss Black America when a all white event would be banned immediately? Especially given the fact that, in my example, black women have WON the title of Miss America. I'm confused.
I think it has something to do with being a member of a minority vs a member of the majority. Or the group in power vs the group not in power, which is why there are women's groups that only allow women, but when men have groups of this nature women are always trying to get into them

What does the phrase "We think, therefore we are," mean to you?
I think Descartes was trying to prove that he really existed and was not a figment of his imagination or a trick of some evil God's imagination. He said something to the extent that the ability to think you exist even if you were mistaken was proof that you existed enough to be wrong.
Now I'm even confused and I wrote it!

Does extreme violence in movies contribute to more violence in real life -or- is movie violence just a reflection of what goes on in reality?
I've had this discussion many times. The way I see it, the constant barrage of violence from TV, video games, and movies desensitizes children to it and eventually they believe that it's a normal part of life. Some people believe that there has been violence in novels, movies (since the early 1900's), and early TV and those generations were not all that violent. They have a...

What happens to aircraft that are retired? Cut up for scrap? Are they mothballed - if so where?
I used to work for an airline that put all their old 737 200's, DC9's, F28's and such in the desert. I don't know how long they leave them there. It's weird, but the pictures I saw of all these airplanes just sitting out there was kind of sad.

What options are available when someone you love is involved in an abusive situation that they can't get out of on their own, but your hands are tied because you live very far away from them? Is simply being there for them if they need to talk enough?
People who stay in abusive relationships do so for many reasons. A lot of women have very low self esteem due to very sad upbringings. One of the hardest things for people to understand is why they don't leave or why they go back over and over. I think the women think that if they could just be better that they could get the abusive person to stop. Other women have never known anything but...

Well it seems that those who reelected the man who put them there are ok with it. Personally, if we chose to oust a man from power because he was a despot and then turn around and take away anyone's freedom and torture them for four years without charging them with any crimes, we are becoming what we hate most.

To say that committing suicide is selfish is just as simplistic as saying that it is selfless. The argument that you should continue suffering because to end that suffering will hurt someone else is pretty selfish of the the family/friends of the person. The overall message I've seen here is that it appears that "selfish" is a very large part of the human condition....
