If welfare is effective and most recipients eventually get off welfare, why aren't they required to repay once they get on their feet financially?
I don't agree that welfare is effective, but in fact, when folks get off the welfare roles, they are subject to taxation...which pays for welfare.

In "The Fountainhead" Ayn Rand promotes self-interest as being good . In the movie "Wallstreet" Gordon Gekko's mantra is "Greed is Good". So justification for selfishness and greed is presented in artistic form. How much do people buy into that idea?
Self-interest is what all healthy egos have, at least in moderation. Greed is an excess of self-interest; often encroaching on others (at others' expense) which is not good.
Philanthropists and clergypeople and social workers and community activists have self interest too.

Why has malpractice insurance gone sky-high these days for doctors?
The credit crunch has affected the availability of liability insurance of all kinds.
Ins Cos don't really want the exposure at all(they'd rather not sell it) but if they can get paid outrageously high premiums, they do.
Generally, we have become sue-happy. Med-Malpractice insurance claims rarely are for less than millions.

It's easier to get in there and mix it up,often with mixed results.

Galeanda & others covered it with one addition. Horses are not as smart as dogs. Their ability to smell does not translate into the ability (or the ability to be trained) to communicate valuable information to humans, to retain information, to follow through.

It means that the mammogram results did not show enough detail to satisfy the tech & they have tried their best with their existing equipment and don't want to keep trying to get a better view.
They really have you over a barrel here. The threat of cancer and the option of early detection is hard to ignore. The vast majority of needle biopsies come back negative. I hope your...

"Experts" often contradict one another. You can find an "expert" to support any position. So, how do we ever know whom to believe when we point to the "experts"? Maybe we need to know whose payroll they are on. What do you think?

I make sure it's what THEY WANT, not what I think they should have. If I'm stuck, I might ask about a favorite color or something indirect that might help me choose. Most of the time, folks will tell you what they want/like....

You must maintain a balance between sodium and potassium at all times. Without balance you can die. While you're at the store, might as well pick up some parmesan cheese ---- Empty contents into pot of your choice (except for large sprinkling of cheese),stir, simmer repeat until hot. Serve with remaining cheese on top....

You're a restaurant owner. Someone makes a pretty expensive carry out order. He picks it up. An hour later his wife comes in with a major attitude, saying she wants her money back because her husband ordered the wrong thing. What do you do?
How badly did the restaurant owner want to retain this customer and this business?
You could always explain that your restaurant was not responsible for her husband. Perhaps if she had chosen a spouse more carefully, this situation could have been avoided. LOL

On Afghanistan, the more I read & hear about it, the more I don't have an answer. If we withdraw, Pakistan might fall to the Taliban and get a stronghold in that region - upsurge in terrorist threat but U.S. military lives will be spared.

Sleepover ... regardless child's age, are you for or against? why?
My daughter is 12, and I find all kind of excuses not to allow sleepover. I wanna hear your opinions. :)
For it, with provision that parents at least have met, you know their address and phone # and are informed about supervision, going outside the home, etc.
It's important to experience social situations and it's also important to let child know - is still young and needs supervision & your parents are protective of your well-being and safety.

Consider that, in a democracy, many people choose not to vote, or vote for the least repulsive candidate - the rep VERY rarely represents a majority.
So we put these people in office & hope for the best. We blew it in Congress. It appears they all are vested in maintaining their power/position and personal wealth BEFORE looking after the best interests of their constituents. {{sigh}}

Why are women more prone to suffering from stress and depression-related conditions than men?
Hormones are different, for one thing. And a by-product of that also is that women tend to express distress verbally with words cries, call for help, men tend to express physically by exercise, running, punching bag, aggression, distraction, working off the frustrations rather than confronting source.
So I'm saying that they suffer equally but express it differently.

Assuming you used protection, I don't think it's crucial to tell her you cheated - esp if it's to clear YOUR conscience. Would you say anything if you were being waited on by a sales clerk and she was coughing and sneezing into her hands while handling your sales transaction?
If anything it'd be, "Gee, nasty cold you've got there." I would step back from her. I wouldn't accept anything s/he had handled. If I was desperate for whatever was being sold, I'd ask if there was an AVAILABLE clerk to handle my transaction.

Im fed up with single life, Anybody else feel this way? All my friends are now in relationships, im the only single female left out of them all, why is it so hard for me to find somebody?
I'm single for a long time. My life is full but sometimes I get the feeling it is not complete. Often I look at friends, neighbors, etc who are married and realize that my life is different than their's.
I'd like to have someone to come home to, a partner, someone supportive , in my corner, someone to share my life with. On the other hand, I'd be giving up a lot of...

Does your checking account balance each month? Or don't you really worry that much about it?
I never balance my checkbook. I do keep track of cashed checks and deposits though. To me the amt of work/hassle in getting it to balance is not worth it. The downside is that if the credit union makes a mistake , I will have an impossible time showing proof.
These day, with online access to my acct, it's possible to catch things quickly. So far so good.

We all try to influence people in one way or another for one thing or another at one time or another. Do you use the "hammer-over-the-head" approach or the subtle "variations-on-a- theme" approach?
If I'm getting paid to do it the other guy's way, I'm fine with that. I don't want to influence you; I don't want you to influence me except by maybe exposing me to different ideas and choices.
Good (or for that matter, bad) example is the best teacher.

Grandmother arrested for buying cold medicine, war on drugs out of control?
It seems to me that since the Patriot Act, etc. the govt as a whole has inflicted itself into our lives on all levels. They can monitor credit card activity, library books we borrow, etc. all without a warrant. I don't think it's just about drugs and granny stocking up on decongestants.
It's a sense that the quality of our life has decreased or minimally, has been redefined.

Umm. It's my understanding that every country has its own immigration laws that manage/limit immigration. You are normally required to have a visa (there are always exceptions though) , which allows you to ENTER, but usually not to stay past a certain time (i.e. 6 mos.) or for a specific purpose (i.e. work, school, tourism).

Can anyone show me a site where someone has actually checked the party affiliation of the folks in the town hall debates? Or has anyone even asked folks what their party affiliation is? How do we know they are right wingers? Are we just assuming this?
All sides are busy trying to demonize their opponents. I think people are afraid and don't want Obamaplan in any form. I think the townhall meetings are doing exactly as intended; allowing ALL people to express themselves - in all ways. It's just not what the current administration wants to hear so they are criticizing the messenger of negative feedback.

President the foreign policy leader for the United States with an important political, military, and economic role in the international arena. If there is collision between the president and Congress, can Congress restrain president in foreignpolicymaking
Yes, that's what happened after WWI when President Wilson came back from Europe with plan for the League of Nations, asked Congress to rubberstamp it without review. United States did not join the League. Opposition in the U.S. Senate, particularly from Republican politicians Henry Cabot Lodge and William E. Borah, together with Wilson's refusal to compromise, ensured that the United...

Do single women often seek attached men?
Commitment-phobic women, low-self-esteemed women who don't think they deserve a man of their own...gold-diggers who want no possibility of a legitimate stable relationship...yes.
Not every single woman fits this category. Many are not looking at all, have single men friend(s), haven't met the right guy yet, etc.

Some of your back discomfort, etc. may not be a direct result of breast size but of growth and bodily changes in general. I'd wait. I'd consider breast reduction an absolute last resort.

What if you discovered everyone upon whom you looked down as being inferior you should have been looking up to as your role models? How would you begin to make amends? Your soul is at stake here..you can't just shake it off. What do you do first?
OK - This has happened to me more than once, I admit it. First I keep my trap shut and listen and observe and hopefully, learn. Good people, wise people - are often patient and forgiving too...or maybe they choose to have bad memories sometimes and will give you another chance. Make amends by your actions from that moment forward.

I betcha the NRA loves it when people show up at gatherings with guns strapped to them in plain sight. Is that a good thing do you think? What could it hurt? I mean, a battle breaks out and ya already got the militia/posse/lynchmob there. Right?
As long as guns are not fired, no one is shot - this will blow over. If someone (an innocent) is hurt, then this will do great damage to the NRA.
To my knowledge, no laws are being broken.
I think it's meant to send a message that people are feeling threatened and will use (legal, per the 2nd amendment) methods available to them to express it.

My theory is that alcohol alters your brain to make you believe things about yourself that aren't true. Like that even though you know the law and have had too much, that it's OK if you go ahead right now and drive anyway. The drunk in you says you're special, you have better driving skills or whatever.

I get these crazy headaches, they almost feel like miniture fireworks going off in my head. The pain is sharp and acute and moves around to various parts, mostly in the parietal region (closer to the occipital). What could cause this?
See - the problem is that many many things can cause headaches. I found out I was sensitive to salt and to certain foods. When I avoid those things, no headaches. Tension, sinus, allergies, drug sensitivity, brain tumor, aneurysm and more.
.
See your doctor to rule out some of these.

My husband is a great man, and he is so good to me. There is only one problem...he is very insecure about our relationship. He gets mad when other men look at me and asks all kinds of questions. It really bothers me. What should I do?
He's insecure, jealous...a bit immature. You can be supportive and reassuring but if that's not enough, suggest counseling. If not addressed, this issue can not only break your marriage; it can make your life miserable. Do not delay.

I just receieved an email from an online application I filled out for McDonalds. They said I was overqualified for the current openings they have. What is that supposed to mean. Do you have to be a moron to work there?
I think to be qualified you have to express that you are very willing to do anything they ask and are motivated and will work hard and follow orders.
"Overqualified" might just be a polite way to say that you aren't making the right noises they want to hear.

I don't think the issue is racism. I think Prof. Gates had a moment where it occurred to him that this is an opportunity for him in his life work re police profiling, etc... This may be his 15 minutes of fame. Well, I hope this worked out for him.
I don't think it had anything much to do with the officer; it could have been ANY police officer...

They want completely different distribution methods, methodology, benefit levels, decision-makers, pricing incentives and medical underwriting methods. They will never merge plans. Even now Obama is talking about...
