They're strong enough and fast enough to go straight through some pretty big fish. I'd imagine the range is somewhat less than is depicted in the movie. Hyrdodynamics and resistance make them a pretty close-range weapon and you have to really sneak up on the fish to where the spear tip...

My last roommate was a 6'3" lout who slept on the couch even though he had a room and had numerous bacteriologically unsound hygiene habits. I always swore he was marooned there in Harrisburg by a Viking ship. He was too uncouth to live among Vikings;)
