Sam: What are you up to? Sneaking off, are we?

How do you determine if an e-mail that you receive has been BCC'd to another person? I know that you cannot "see" the BCC line in the e-mail that you receive but there must be a way to determine that?? Thanks.
If you put addresses in the BCC field of an email it will be secretly copied to those addresses, and none of the other addresses in the To, CC, or BCC fields will know about it because the BCC field is not displayed on incoming messages.
Note there is a potential security flaw in the BCC feature. According to the conventions of the SMTP protocol, all addresses, including BCC addresses, are...

What is the difference between an 8.6 Base Curve (BC) and a 8.8 BC contact lens?
The base curve is the radius of the sphere that the back of the contact lens describes. One just has a bit more curve to it (you probably can't notice much difference looking at it, but your eye can tell the difference).

A dime has 118 ridges on it how far apart are they?
A dime is 17.91 mm in diameter, so the circumference is:
C= pi times d
C= 3.14 x 17.91
C= 56.2374 mm
Divide the circumference by 118 and you get about .48 mm (but then you would have to subtract a little more to account for the ridges themselves). At least that will give you a rough estimate.

It sounds like mom is the responsible one, and has figured out that $20 is how much they can afford for "fun money". If he truly wants more, they should sit down together and go over the budget to see if an increase is feasible or not.

Hmmm...this one is a bit tougher than the last.
I'm going to pick the kite string so I can tie things together for shelter or a raft (although kite string would probably have to be braided together to be strong enough for anything useful).

I'm pretty easy-going, so unless it was creating a hardship for me (making it too full for my own trash) I probably wouldn't do anything. If it's a sports car, you just gotta have a stick. We have a Mustang, and I love to hear the engine roar when I'm getting ready to shift gears. It just isn't the same with an automatic.
That being said, an SUV or sedan can go either way for me. I like an automatic in heavy traffic becaue my clutch foot gets tired, but I really don't think much about it otherwise.

I think it would be a good idea to volunteer in several settings you are possibly interested in to see if they are what you expect. Labor/delivery would be working more with mothers than children, so pediatrics might be more in line.
Other options are teaching, day care, pediatric dentistry, pediatric audiology, and others along that line.

You should keep trying to ignore them (if they are talking about you behind your back, of course you know that they aren't really your friends).
The best course of action is to try to make friends with other people who share your interest, whether that is sports, art, music, or whatever. Get involved in things that interest you, and you will meet new people to hang out with.

Does it annoy you when when people can't spell correctly on AB?
It does bother me when people do it consistently.
People do make typos so there are exceptions, but I tend to regard questions or answers with misspellings as coming from less educated individuals. I know that all opinions should be valued, but usually those with more education also have a wider range of experiences to draw upon when giving advice.

I am watching the Masters Golf Tour. I have noticed numbers on the caddies white jumpsuits, and Phil Mickelson's caddy has a #1 on it. And Phil won last year. So my question is, What do the numbers on the caddies white jumpsuits represent?
Before 1983, all players were required to use the services of an Augusta National Club caddie. Since then, players have been allowed the option of bringing their own caddie. However, the Masters maintains the standardizing of a full caddie uniform. The complete uniform consists of a white jumpsuit, a green Masters cap, and white tennis shoes. The surname, and sometimes first initial, of each...

I think you would have to have some other training, at least in a simulator so that you would know how the plane actually feels when you change various controls. Think about driving a car. You could learn to operate the controls on a PC, but there really isn't a substitute for actually driving.

Answer to:
How would you describe the subtle difference between an English accent and an Australian accent?
To my ear, an Australian accent has more of an "ay" sound with a glide on "a", and overall the sounds tend to be drawn out more than with an English accent. I suppose it depends which English accent you are talking about, though, as some of them are quite different from others.

I just found out my sister-in-law won't give her 11-year old daughter the HPV vaccine (which can prevent cervical cancer) because she thinks it gives her permission to be promiscuous. Isn't it more important to keep your child healthy?
The HPV vaccine does not protect against pregnancy, just the HPV virus. Even if her daughter refrained from all sexual activity until marriage, what's to say her husband would not have the virus and then pass it to her?
Both of my daughters are getting the vaccine, but both want to wait until marriage for sex. Just getting the shots is not going to make them jump the next guy they see.

What is the definition of Pin Firing?
Pin firing is a therapy that uses a small, red-hot probe to cause cauterization (burning) of tissue in horses with chronic injuries to produce an abundant, serous inflammatory process. It means that you are type A negative, which is type A blood with a negative RH factor.
Blood type is based on particular molecules (called antigens) that sit on the surface of red blood cells. People either have A antigens (type A blood), B antigens (type B), both (type AB) or neither (type O) on their red blood cells. When it comes to Rh factor, some people have the antigen (Rh-positive)...

Fashion marketers have to be on the cutting edge-endorsing the right thing at the right time. They connect the public with the world of fashion, and...

I think I would put the older child on the couch since it is longer, but you can always ask the children if they have a preference (just ask one child...if you ask both, they will inevitably pick the same one and argue about it!)

I'm not sure that there is any definitive age, but I would definitely want someone who had some experience with infants and demonstrated responsibility. There are some younger teens who would be great, and older teens who would not be. It really depends on the individual.

Why do people love ipods? Give me a good answer.
I like mine because my first two were free (I won them), and they are very easy to work with. My whole family has them, so we can all share the same music or have our own through iTunes. I store all my songs on a portable USB drive, so I can easily move it from one computer to another. We have had to move the music files before, and you just need to make sure you copy the actual song files and not just the iTunes library.

A shower is traditionally when you are standing, and a bath is when you are sitting in water. Once a week would be way less than what I would consider good. You should wash your body at least every other day, while you may be able to let your hair go for longer periods depending on how oily it is.

Why do muscular spasms occur during an orgasm (in both males and females)? Does they actually have a purpose?
No one will argue that we enjoy experiencing orgasms because they feel good. Apart from that, we are aware that the overriding purpose of a male orgasm, physiologically speaking, is to send semen into the vagina for the purpose of fertilizing an egg within the uterus. However, not many people realize that there is a physiological purpose for the female orgasm as well. During the internal spasms...

I took 6 days worth of antibiotics for a chest cold and on the last day my ear completely stopped up. Why didn't the antibiotics stop this from happening? What can I do?
Antibiotics will help deal with an infection, but do not prevent middle ear fluid build-up. Most likely, your problem is due to the cold affecting your eustachian tubes. These tubes connect your middle ear to the back of your throat and help equalize pressure in the middle ear. If you have a cold, the tubes can swell shut which will lead to fluid build-up.
You might want to try...

Answer to:
How do you get your ears to unstop after you have an ear infection?
You can try performing the Valsalva maneuver to help pressurize your middle ear. You hold your nose shut, take a deep breath, close your mouth and try to blow--this directs the air into your Eustachian tubes. This often helps to clear the fluid from your middle ears faster.

My ears feel stopped up, and there's an echoing, roaring sound in them. Will this go away on its own, and how should I remedy this?
Most likely, it is due to allergies or a cold affecting your eustachian tubes and should go away when the underlying problem does.
The eustachian tubes connect your middle ear to the back of your throat and help equalize pressure in the middle ear. If you have allergies or a cold, the tubes can swell shut (just like when your nose gets congested). You might want to try decongestants and see...

My inner ear itches alot, how can I stop it from itching?
Technically, I think you mean your ear canal.
(The ear consists of three basic parts - the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear)
Often itching in the ears is due to dry skin or wax build-up. You can try a few drops of mineral oil in the ear every day, which will help moisturize the skin and allow any extra wax to come out of the ear naturally.

You can use an over-the-counter wax removal kit (they consist of softening drops and a syringe to flush out the ears).

My daughter just got diagnosed with Strep throat. How can the rest of us avoid getting it after we have probably already been exposed?
Wash your hands often when you are around people with colds or viral or bacterial illnesses. Do not share toothbrushes or eating and drinking utensils.
Bacteria are almost always transmitted by contact with tiny droplets from an infected person. Strep throat is passed from one person to another by contact with the tiny droplets of an infected person's cough, sneeze, or breath.

Answer to:
Can fluid medicatio cause fluid to retain in your ears
Liquid medication which is put into the ears will generally only affect the ear canal. The eardrum stops any fluid from entering the middle ear. A hole in the eardrum, however, would allow fluid to pass into your middle ear.
Answer to:
I have a bad cold and my ear is blocked up. Is it due to my cold or something else (such as wax)? What can I do to get rid of it?
Most likely, it is due to allergies or a cold affecting your eustachian tubes. The tubes connect your middle ear to the back of your throat and help equalize pressure in the middle ear. If you have allergies or a cold, the tubes can swell shut (just like when your nose gets congested). You might want to try decongestants and see if that helps.
If that does not help, a visit to an ENT is...
Answer to:
What is the most effective way that you know of to unclog your ears (i.e. remove earwax or any other obstruction that makes your ears feel stuffy and/or clogged)?
For wax, you can use an over-the-counter wax removal kit (they consist of softening drops and a syringe to flush out the ears). An ENT I work with recommends a few drops of mineral oil in the ears every day, which will help the wax to slide out of the ear. If the wax is impacted, you will probably need to go your doctor to have it removed.

What is a home remedy for fluid in the ears?
You can also try performing the Valsalva maneuver to help pressurize your middle ear. You hold your nose shut, take a deep breath, close your mouth and try to blow--this directs the air into your Eustachian tubes. This often helps to clear the fluid from your middle ears faster.
Answer to:
What does ear wax do?
Ear wax protects your ear from anything foreign that flies, crawls, or is blown into the ear canals. Dirt, tiny bits of plant material, small insects, bacteria, and so forth are immobilized by wax. Think of wax as the sticky stuff on a No Pest Strip. The primary purpose of ear wax is to protect your ear canal and ear drum from such foreign materials.

How do you make a outdoor playpen (safe from dogs and cats and other things and without them being able to get out) for a couple of rabbits?
It would be fabricated similar to a dog run. Small gauge chicken wire would be best, and make sure to run the wire about 6 to 12" below the ground so they can't dig underneath.
Another option is to make an above-ground pen for them (this is what we had when I had rabbits as a child). A wooden frame with wire stapled over it will work well.

Answer to:
Jacques Chirac gave a BEER MUG to the Turkish Foreign Minister as a gift from the French people. Given that Turkey is majority Muslim, what do you think of this gift?
It doesn't sound like a very well thought-out gift. Plus, France is not really famous for beer, so I don't see why he would give that particular gift anyways. Maybe wine glasses, which would still be in very poor taste. I'm surprised his handlers did not catch this, or maybe it was a deliberate political snub.

Don't duplicate questions annoy you? Especially from people who have been here a long time enough.
They do to an extent, but then again some of the questions have so many answers now that it would almost be easier to make a "part 2" question or something
For example, take the "favorite movie line" question. I think there are 40 pages or so on that one now...I'm not going to read through all of those, but if it was only a few I would.

Don't have sex just because "everyone else is doing it". I know it seems dificult now, but things will get better. You should wait to have sex until you find someone you love and who loves you, not just to gain friends.
Trust me, there are other girls your age who are virgins!

You will probably need to restore your iPod. Instructions to do that are found here:

If your iPod is frozen, just let it run completely out of battery life, then it should work when you hook it up to your computer.

If you knew a woman who was pregnant, who had 8 kids already, three who were deaf, two who were blind, one mentally retarded, and she had syphilis; would you recommend that she have an abortion?
I'm not sure I would just volunteer that information to her. If asked, however, I would inform her about the risks to the baby due to the syphilis.
I would strongly suggest medical follow-up to see if the syphilis could be cured (usually if they have had it for less than a year, it can be cured with penicillin).
Abortion is a very personal decision, and I wouldn't want to...

People are used to things staying the same. If they learned about the country when they were younger, that's what they will go back to.
It is sort of similar to Pluto. I still think of it as a planet, even though it got downgraded recently.

Who agrees that users under 18 should have a special mark on their name or avatar? A feature that still gives them some freedom, but keeps them out of the Adult section and notifies other users that "you are talking to a minor."
I don't see how this could be implemented. Most of the younger users are very computer savvy, and would probably have no problem working around whatever obstacles are thrown in their way.
I think it is usually easy to tell who the younger users are, but when I can't then it means they are acting in an adult manner and should be treated as such.

I am such a pushover when a salesman comes into my home! I feel trapped and find it difficult to say 'No,' especially if they act disappointed (even if I can see they are manipulating me.) Any suggestions for standing firm and not buying their product?
The easiest way is to not let them inside in the first place. When saying no, it is best to be firm and no-nonsense. A simple "I'm not interested, thank you" and shutting the door will work wonders. I use the same technique with telemarketers, just say the line and hang up the phone before they have a chance to speak again.

There is no one best product. I had success selling books I cleared out of my basement, others make jewelry or act as resellers. You need to research what products you can get at a good price which can be sold for a good profit.

Answer to:
Has anyone had any experience with tubes being surgically put in ears?
I work with an ENT, so I see many patients who have had this surgery. Usually when a patient has three or more ear infections over a year which are not helped by medication, tubes are indicated.
Adults can have the procedure done in the office. The eardrum is numbed, a small slit is cut into the eardrum, and then the tube is put in place. Children have the surgery done in the hospital...

I have. I cut off about 12 inches, and when I went to pay for the haircut, was pleasantly surprised to find that it was complimentary.

Personally, I started sharing information as opportunities arose while they were young, tailoring the information to fit their ages.

Is he deliberately breaking the games, or is it inadvertent? If they are yours, he should be restricted from playing with them. Your parents should take care of this for you.
If it is a family system, your parents should probably limit the amount of time he can play or require him to pay for any replacement parts (new controllers, etc.) as needed.

I've been on the pill for 5 yrs. now, & take it religiously, but during safe sex with my partner the condom became lodged inside of me, & by the time I noticed, he had already came inside of me. Whats the possibility of me being pregnant?
If you are consistent with your pill use, the chances of your being pregnant are slim. Since you have in fact been using two forms of birth control, the fact that the condom came off did not leave you unprotected against pregnancy.
The thing you may have to worry about is a sexually transmitted disease, since the pill alone does not protect against them.

Well, it wasn't against my will, but:
The vexillum was a flag-like object used in the Classical Era of the Roman Empire. The vexillum resembles the modern flag; however, the cloth is draped vertically from a horizontal edge, unlike the horizontally-flown flags most used today. The word vexillology, meaning the study of flags, is derived from this word.

BPPV is dizziness which occurs subsequent to a change in head position. The dizzines usually goes away after about 30 seconds, and fatigues after repeated elicitation. It is due to calcium carbonate crystals breaking loose into the inner ear.
There is a higher incidence of BPPV in people with migraines:

The frequency of the wave will be the same as the source. Periodic waves are created when something (the source) creates a disturbance through vibration. As a sound wave moves through a medium, each particle of the medium vibrates at the same frequency.
The frequency of a wave is measured as the number of complete back-and-forth vibrations of a particle of the medium per unit of time.

What do you wish people would just shut up about, right now in your life, in media, in AB, or any other medium?
I am not a big fan of the "what pill is this" questions here on AB. Where do these people find all these drugs, and why would you want to take something if it is not yours? Are they really going to take our word for what the pill is, say "ok, it sounds like it won't hurt me" and take it?
Luckily, in my life or the media I have not run across this problem, so...

What exactly makes the female breast so offensive that it is to be covered in public? The lump or the nipple? If it's the nipple, what makes that so offensive?
It is just tradition. We have been taught they breasts must be covered up, so that is what we do. Obviously some countries do not have this taboo, and they seem to muddle through just fine.

Answer to:
What is the most powerful thing in the world?
Water. It can erode mountains, destroy villages, is used for many religious ceremonies (baptism, holy water, purification), can produce electricity, helps transport things, provides something that we require to live, is fun to surf on, and makes up most of our bodies. There are probably more reasons that I haven't thought of.
Answer to:
Is it appropriate to breastfeed in public? Are there some places where it is more/less acceptable than others?
I think it is fine to breastfeed in public. I believe that women should cover up, though, because in our society it is not acceptable to go topless. I personally don't have a problem with it, but I did use a blanket or towel while nursing. I still got some dirty looks even with a blanket over my shoulder. I do not think they should have to use the restroom to nurse.

Any of those methods are disrespectful due to the lack of face to face contact. I think myspace is probably the worst because not only is it one-sided, it is also public.

You can still dress in t-shirts and jeans (since that's probably what you're most comfortable in), just change it up a bit.
Try t-shirts in different colors, layering several t-shirts, try new accesories and shoes, etc. Hey, t-shirts and jeans are a classic for a reason!

You can try to syringe out the wax (there are over-the-counter kits you can buy), and you can put a drop of two of mineral oil in your ear to help the wax come out better.
Does your ear hurt? It could be plugged up due to a blocked eustachian tube. Decongestants can help, and popping your ears (val salva maneuver) can also make it feel better.

For people in the US, with or without insurance: How much did you end up paying in pregnancy costs?
Pregnancy or delivery? Cause you have to get a whole new wardrobe.....
Seriously, I only paid $24 for my first child and $16 for the second (they kick you out of the hospital sooner when you're not a 1st time mom)

Apart from the UK, do people in other countries turn their clocks forward in spring, and back in autumn?
The US does, although not all states or territories participate (Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Arizona don't, although the Navajo nation does)

Has anyone seen '300'? How was it?
I just saw it yesterday, and really enjoyed it. It is a bit quirky since it is based on a graphic novel, but once you get past that it is a good story. (I also kept wondering why the Greek king had a Scottish accent, but that's just me...)

Answer to:
How long do you keep a car before selling it or trading it in?
I drive my cars until they die. My last car had 250,000 miles on it, so I don't think I would have gotten much on a trade. I'm not a big fan of car payments, so one a car is paid off I'm loath to start new debt as long as it is running well.
Answer to:
What time do you get up each morning?
As late as possible! I'm a night owl, so if I had my way I would go to bed around 3am and wake up around 11am. That doesn't work very well with a working life, so I just have to deal as best I can (yawn....).
Answer to:
What do you think of when you think of Germany?
I think of the trip we took there for a few weeks to visit hubby while he was at Ramstein near Landstuhl. One of my daughters and I went on the train and visited castles while he was working.
Our German sucked, but everyone was very nice, and we were actually able to muddle through nicely. That daughter is now in her 3rd year of German in school (the trip got her hooked), and her class...

If neighbor puts mailbox on your property with different road name than yours, the local PO has told them to move it back and they won't, is it illegal for you to move it back to its proper location?
If it is on your property, you should be able to move it, but I would try to work it out with your neighbor. It's never fun to live next to someone once you start getting into pissing contests.

Does anyone have suggestions for improving my public speaking prowess?
You might want to look into Toastmasters or a similar group in your area. The best thing to do is just keep practicing, and hopefully they can give you some feedback on how to improve.
The more you know your subject the better, so make sure you are up to speed on everything you are talking about.

Carol - song of joy (la la la....)
Answer to:
Which is your most downrated answer?
I got little dings from the politics/religions categories, but nothing major (-3 or -5, but then they were rated back up so they are at -1 or positive now). Someone downrated my answer on disciplining children, but again it was just -1: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/170331/546149
I guess I can't complain, because I'm fairly new and have a few answers at +30 or higher

Answer to:
Curiouser and curiouser? Alice said that about life. To what extent do you agree?
The older I get, the more I agree. It is interesting how much it's a small world. The more people you meet, the more commanalities you find.
I also find there's more and more I don't know. It's fun to try to keep up with everything.

Does sci-fi make you look forward to space travel or put you off?
I think most sci-fi makes space travel seem like an interesting adventure (except Hitchhiker...not too fond of getting slapped in the face and whatnot)

How much mathematics do we really need to learn?
Enough to be able to give change back.
One of my pet peeves is when, for example, something costs $16.49 and I give the cashier $22. Just give me back $5.51 without telling me I gave you too much!

No, it depends what my mood is as to what food is best at the time. I like American, Chinese, Greek, Japanese, Indian, Italian, and others I can't think of right now. They all have good and bad dishes
