Why do mothers and daughters have such complex, love-hate relationships?
Because nothing will ever please her. I try and try to make my mother happy ... went to a really good school - she just complained about how much it cost. Come over and clean her house - i didn't put this or that in the right place. She thinks her way is the right and only way to do things ...

When someone is lieing, do their eyes look left or right?
I've read that it's much more effective to actually listen to what a person's saying and how they say it than to look for body language clues to tell if they're lying. Are they answering you with a question, avoiding giving details, etc.

What do you think about those men that have everything 'given' to them? Wives make more money, buy a house, someone gets you a job or 2, he uses someone else's idea for a research paper.. are these people happy/successful?
Um, I don't think anyone who uses someone else's ideas should be happy. I'm not sure why you limit this to men: I'm sure you're speaking about someone specific that you know. I don't understand why it is still, in 2007, stigmatized for a man to earn less money than his wife. Attitudes like this are what is setting feminism (the struggle for equality between men and...

Yes. I was a total a**hole about it too. For strange, hard-to-explain reasons. I was also 16 btw. I didn't think a 17 yr old's love was real, but it was real to him. I would love to be able to take that back.

Does anyone here look down on kids before marriage?
Um, I wouldn't be able to do it myself ... I mean, I would if that's what came about in my life, but I wouldn't plan it. I'm not that independent or secure; I would need a husband to have a whole family. But, that's me. I don't look down on others for that. They understand their lives, I understand mine.

It's pretty weird, I know. I usually see young, college age girls doing that. I have to say, though, when I'm really lazy, I'll wear yoga pants a tee-shirt and flip-flops *** if it's really late, and I'm jst running in/out of the grocery store. Or, if I go to the grocery store where only old people shop. Or, on Sat morn when I go through the Starbucks drive-thru.

Creed was lame, lame, lame. That said, I dunno. I'm kind-of in-between a Christian and a Non-Christian. I like music with really good lyrics and really good sound. I'm pretty particular. If a Christian rock band had really good lyrics and sound, then I would dig them. I liked that one D.C. Talk song.

Along with all the other Answerbag clubs, why doesn't someone start a "Accept Downrating with Grace and Stop Calling it Trolling" club?
I agree. I downrate so infrequently, but when I do, I give a reason, yet it never seems good enough for the downrated. I think the only problem is when there is no reason given ... or when someone genuinely appears to be trolling your Q&A and downrating w/o leaving comment.

Atheists: I'm not being snide or pushing buttons, but do you have an anthem? Because spiritual people connect through song, so if there was a strongly atheist song, would you celebrate it? Thought inspired by 'It's All Nice on Ice' by Modest Mouse ...
Modest Mouse - Styrofoam Boots / It's All Nice On Ice, Alright Lyrics
Well all's not well
but i'm told that it'll all be quite nice
you'll be drowned in boots like Mafia

and i'll be damned
they were right
i'm drowning upside down

On AB can one answer with a joke when someone asks a serious question? what's the etiquette?
I would just say to make sure to put LOL or an emoticon ... it avoids confusion. And, I would recommend that you don't say anything blatantly mean-spirited, that's just rude when someone is asking a serious question.
Answer to:
Do you think the media over sensationalizes events such as the Virginia Tech and Columbine shootings? Do you think this encourages others to do the same thing?
I don't think that it encourages others, but I do think that the way media spins everything into a crisis of greatest proportions is causing problems in our society: I don't think people become numb, they become paranoid. Obviously it's important to recognize problems in society and work towards solutions by studying the causes for these things, but by sensationalizing them, all...

Why is it that popular people on Answerbag end up with points for questions on bags or guys, while the not so well-known ones don't get anything for more meaningful questions? (Please don't take this as an insult)
I agree. I'm new and some of the questions that I write that I think are really good just get downrated on the main page without even an answer :) oh well. maybe they're only gems in my head. when people do get around to answering them, they're usually quality answers though. sometimes it'll take a few days and a question you had forgot you asked will gain some steam.

i guess it means it's futile. obviously you can't cure the dead, and i guess enlightenment can't be taught, but discovered, by the individual seeking it.

Ok your grandmother is dieing and u just can't cry u feel sad and scard but u can't cry is that wrong.
no, it's not wrong. people all grieve in their own unique way. you can't be expected to grieve the same way as others, and the same goes in reverse. don't feel guilty about it. just make sure you don't bury it either. take the feelings as they come. you're probably still in shock, and if this is your first experience of losing a loved one, you just have no idea how to...

Why is the gunman being referred to as "a Korean student" when he has been in America since 1992, and is an American citizen?
It's because people don't want to believe that one of our own could do that. It's away of distancing ourselves from him - from the violence and tragedy that he caused. It's a way of making him 'Other' ... the same thing that happened at Columbine: the students were these freaky, goth kids, easy to pick out, easy to target in your own school ... they were the...

Does anyone follow the no-sex-until-the-third-date "rule"?
no. that's not my personal formula. mine is wound up in personal (kind of religious) guilt and fear of deadly stds (watched kids and trainspotting at a young age -- and have an incredibly neurotic mother) so mine has become no sex until falling in love. it may become too lonely though ...

Answer to:
Why are male students (and not female) the one's that go on violent rampages? Are we failing our male students?
at first, i was really irritated by your question, because, statistically, we as a society have been provent to expect less from female students. but, you're right, stereotypes, and pigeonholing work both ways. perhaps we're not taking care of their emotional needs. we expect boys to have a stiff upper lip, be tough, hide emotion, etc.

Be non-judgemental about their choices, and just give a 'no thanks' ... if they keep pressuring you, just say, 'why does it bother you if i choose not to do whatever you do? i'm no...

Do you like mythology?
Fo sho! I love mythology. So much that, Xena: Warrior Princess (and its bastardized mythology) is my favorite TV show ever (own all the DVDs). It's always so tragic, dramatic, and informative. I also love that so much of the study of human behavior (especially psychoanalysis and Sigmund Freud) comes from mythology.

i think that will inevitably fall upon each couple. there are many factors to consider. did the person confess or get caught? was it a repeat offender or a one-time deal? did the couple seek councelling or just ignore the problem and move on? but, some t.v. relationship shrink in America famously says that every individual has different 'lines' not to be crossed ... dealbreakers, or...

In some you can marry as young as 14 if you have parental consent! I had no idea. I did't come upon any where it was legal to marry at 12 though. To answer my own question, my favorite ancient civilization is the Mayans. They're mysterious and unique. I've been to one of the old Mayan cities (Palenque) and it was the most amazing place I've ever been. The art and architecture, the Mayan calendar, the still as of yet unknown language; everything about them thrills me.

hmmm ... very good question. maybe they just have true faith in their family, and that their family steers them in the right direction. or maybe, they really have found true faith. i think for them to have faith, they have to see that their is a choice. and they choose to be faithful. then, i see so many people, even my age, who only vote a certain way, because that's how their parents...

because the people who live under communist rule don't have a choice - i tutor lots of cuban refugees and they got the funk out of there. i think the ideas behind communism are really good, but they're never put into practice the way they're written and it always ends up more like a dictatorship.

What are the lyrics to the best 'break up' song you know?
Since I'm going through a break up, I know this one by heart. Pretty much any Shins song, but especially this one:
"Gone For Good" by the Shins
Untie me, I've said no vows
The train is getting way too loud
I gotta leave here my girl
Get on with my lonely life
Just leave the ring on the rail
For the wheels to nullify
Until this turn in my head
I let you stay...

Are there certain parts of the world where there is higher concentrations of natural vitamins and minerals in the foliage, ground, and trees? What parts of the world are known for being "health mecca's" or rejuvenation centers?
I've heard that the Amazon in South America is supposed to be. There are lots of shamans and stuff that still exist. There are so many undiscovered resources/plants/minerals that exist down there. I haven't done the reading myself, but it's what a hippy friend of mine told me.

A new friend who, due to credit issues has no credit card, asked that I rent a car for her. If she has the car as an 'additional renter,' & the car is involved in a criminal activity, could I be considered 'involved'?
I wouldn't do it. The greatest controversy you can cause in a friendship is loaning money or doing something like that. Especially since you don't know her that well ... you would get blamed for whatever if it was in your name ESPECIALLY if she bailed and they couldn't find her to prosecute. Just say that you can't and if she's a good friend, she'll understand.

The thing that drives me nuts is when parents sit with their kids in the smoking section, especially newborn babies. I just want to scream at them! Also, when parents have their toddlers out at 9 at night, feeding them iced tea or soda and then scream at/spank their kids for getting hyper or rowdy. hmm ... you just gave them caffeine you idiots!

compare/contrast essays are pretty easy once you've done a few and get the formula down. The easiest way is INTRO, FIRST SUBJECT, TRANSITION, SECOND SUBJECT, COMPARE/CONTRAST, CONCLUDE. But, as long as your answer is logical and well organized, you can do it a number of ways (perhaps more creative than mine).
