Why did the American Indians not build permanent dwellings and towns on the same scale as the Europeans? What’s your theory?
I love how all Native Americans are somehow conflated with some of the Plains tribes of the central US.
Not all American Indians had the same lifestyle and culture, and were in fact very diverse. Not all American Indians are from the US; what about Canadian aboriginals and those of Mexico, Central America and South America?

This question needs to be asked.
I seriously can't believe the reaction that Penn State football fans are having in this situation.
People who are rallying in support of Penn State officials right now are rallying to support those who systematically protected a child rapist for many many years.
A. CHILD. RAPIST.

You're entitled to liking the music you like, but I just plain outright don't like what Metallica has put out - sellouts or not. Their music isn't that good in my opinion, so it's simple. (For the record my guy LOVES Metallica and they're his favorite band).

Most atheists and non-theists I've encountered tend to adhere to the "to each his own" line of thought regarding religion. We tend to recognize that people believe different things and that it's pretty personal - so while we don't necessarily agree, we aren't about to infringe upon anybody else's rights to their own interpretations of the universe, unless it's an argument being...

Poetry is about the ability to manipulate language towards a specific effect - this can be by manipulating it through meter, through rhyme, through alliteration...

I have the same issue (except I don't curl). Braids are always a nice touch, and you can get pretty creative with them. Or you could set your hair in braids overnight and have nice, wavy hair the day afterward. You can also put your hair up in a bun or a few buns overnight (with pins) to give it more shape and body. Curlers. You get the idea.

Answer to:
Feminine men are usually gay and masculine women are usually single.Should certain tendencies be a prerequisite to determine humanity? Why?
Of course it shouldn't.
First of all, the masculinity/femininity are social constructions - by whose standards are these women masculine and these men feminine? Which aspects are you judging as masculine and feminine anyway - physical appearance, personality, occupation? And isn't this ignoring that both men and women have certain "masculine" and "feminine" traits expressed differently by...

For the most part, cats.
With the dogs most people seem to have (read: not well-trained, because most people won't devote the time it takes to really train their dogs), I just get the feeling that they're pretty much like attention-seeking children who never develop past the age of 5, and are constantly needing to be taken care of.

Yes, I have, but have never stretched them out too far.

The second time, I tried gaguing them a little too quickly (from an 18 to 12 in a week) and had a few issues. It was painful (tolerably so) and there was some blood and a minor infection.

On the other, there are too many people in the U.S. who are attending universities (public, mostly) who really don't belong there. A lot of these people would be better suited for a trade school for their field than an actual university education - and because of what they didn't...

It's difficult to say without knowing more about your lifestyle (ie, diet, exercise, when you go to sleep, what you do during the day, etc).
This may help though:
- Try exercising for at least an hour during the day
- Don't eat carbohydrates (ie sugar, bread, etc) within 4 hours of the time you go to bed
- Don't drink anything with caffeine in it after Noon.
- Try to go to bed at the same...

Do you think gay marriage should be legal? Why or why not?
The issue here isn't "marriage," per se - it's those who make lifetime commitments to partners (of the same gender) and want the same benefits as a married couple. Marriage is a social and legal institution, not even necessarily religious (though it certainly can be, which I'll address later). If this country (supposedly) practices freedom of religion, then why can't those of us who don't...

How do you do this math problem- Kim needs 9 and 3/4 yards of strings for one project and 1 and 15/16 yards of string for a second project. What is the total amount of string needed?
You need to convert the fractions so that the bottom parts are both the same number.
So if you have 3/4 and 15/16, what is the common denominator? (Hint: how many times does 4 go into 16?)
Once you figure that out, multiply the top and bottom half of the fraction that you are converting by the same number (the common denominator).
Then, you add the numbers.

It's just my opinion, but I don't think that the average 8-year-old is responsible enough to actually care for a piercing the way that they need to be cared for.
My mother got my ears pierced when I was little, too. I had constant infections, and now my ear lobes are scarred with asymmetrical piercings.
I advise against getting your child's ear pierced.

Answer to:
Is the cost of school formals rising?
If I remember correctly, most of the school formals I went to cost around $50, except for the year that we got The Fray (who sucked) to play at our prom. Then tickets were something like $75 or so.
I'd be willing to bet that proms didn't cost $50+ ten or fifteen years ago.

My boyfriend want me to get my son's ear pierced butt he's in grade 2. Is this okay? My boyfriend thinks it'll make him look cool. He just seems so young to care. Am I making too big of a deal out of this and should just get my son an earring?
Why is this even a question? Who is the responsible parent here? Who cares what your boyfriend thinks will look "cool?" What does your SON think about it? Is your son even old enough to care for a piercing? I think not.
I don't know your boyfriend, but he's already on my nerves.

As a white person, do you trust the police?
As an anti-authoritarian, hell no.
I'm sure that individual police are nice people and all, and I've met a few that were fine, upstanding citizens. But I've also had some bad experiences with them, and have heard some truly horrific stories about their abuse of power.

Why do women complain more about the marriage than do men?
What a loaded question.
Men and women both have legitimate complaints regarding the institution of marriage.
But I'm going to come out and say that, at least from a socio-economic standpoint (read: not on an individual level by any means) men reap far more benefits from marriage than women do.

I need a good attention getter and topic sentence for the novel Julius Caesar. the essay question is "at the end of the play, Antony refers to Brutus as 'the noblest roman of them all.' is this a true assessment? was brutus noble?
If it's a play it's not a novel.
I suppose you can start by asking yourself whether you agree with that statement or not, and then going through and looking for specific quotes that reinforce your thesis.
A good place to start: Does Brutus have any soliloquies? (Talking out loud to himself while alone so that we see his inner thoughts). If so, does it reveal whether Brutus...

Actually, I believe that atheists are often some of the top religious scholars. It helps when you have no bias toward one religion or another, to study them objectively. Now I'm not talking about Moongrim specifically, but it IS possible to study religion from a scholarly standpoint, without believing in a religion.

Women in Japan, Korea, India and other countries try to lighten their skin "for beauty." Many Western women try to darken their skin through tanning "for beauty." Does everyone want to look medium beige? Or do we just want what we don't have?
I think it's the whole "setting yourself apart" from the masses, be it tanning to set yourself apart from the masses of pasty white people, or lightening to set yourself apart from the masses of darker skin. I think it exoticizes people as physical commodities.

Is there anything special about having a week that's 7 days long? Is there any reason we couldn't have a more metric-friendly 10 day long week for instance?
Actually I believe France attempted this immediately following one of its Revolutions. If I recall correctly (and please correct me if I'm wrong) the main reason it didn't work was because they still only had one or two days of rest in the week. They also tried to divide the day into a more metric-friendly system. People were not happy.

"Patriarchy wasn't invented by men trying to control women: it was invented by mothers who wanted to control their daughters-in-law." Your thoughts?
Where did that load of BS come from? That mother was once a daughter-in-law.
Nobody knows *exactly* why patriarchy came about, but mostly the theories have more to do with women needing protection & help feeding/raising children during pregnancy & the years that it takes for a child to mature to independence. So the woman would (in this theory) bear children and take care of them...

If you are a gay female what is the best way to spot and introduce yourself to other lesbians outside of a gay bar? My gaydar is broke or something, I hate hitting on straight wemon cuz its embarrassing.
I've always had the same problem, despite living in a town that supposedly has a pretty large lesbian community.
Most cities that I've lived in have groups that you can participate in or join to meet other single gay women - you could try looking into something like that. Or, as weird as it sounds, look on Craigslist (with discretion & caution) or place an add or something...

The reason people who call themselves Aryan are considered racist is because, historically, those who call themselves "Aryan" do so in a way that denotes that they believe themselves to...

Do you write poetry? tell us your poems and what they mean to you and why you wrote them
Actually, yes, I do write poetry from time to time ^_^
This one is about an epiphany I had when I almost died (car, cliff):
When I woke up, ears ringing, upside-down in the snow,
I noticed my shoes were missing.
This is not a metaphor,
nor is it any kind of implication of a cold world spun on its head,
though for years I have been trying to pinpoint the exact moment

Is hot cocoa made with milk a good or bad idea to help you get to sleep? I know warm milk is supposed to help, but would he chocolate in it make you more awake? What do you do to get to sleep?
Bad. Chocolate has caffeine in it, and the sugar definitely won't help either.
When I can't sleep, I've found that taking a bath (preferably in dim lighting, like candle-light) helps.
Reading magazines or books also helps(especially if you can manage to find a copy of my old International Relations textbook =P).

Such a cute song ^_^

Do you ever get afraid of catching sexual disease and what have you caught before
Not really. I make sure all of my partners are tested before we do the nasty. Also, I get tested regularly enough to allay any fears that I might have some lurking STI. On top of that, I tend to keep long-term monogamous sexual relationships.
So no, I'm not afraid because I take the necessary precautions.

According to the article, the technology fund "could help foster the development of new computer technology or telecommunications businesses, or widen access to broadband Internet services." If that's the case, I see no problem.
The operative word being used there, though, is "could." Meaning, there's a pretty good chance that it won't.
